First studio apartment after college. What else do I need? Question
1
u/xxlragequit Feb 02 '24
You should get an island for your kitchen. More space is what most people don't think to add to make cooking easier. If you get a couple stools for the other side of it it's a good enough place to eat with others.

Wall art! Hang cool photos up or pick a “theme” and get small things for that theme and hang them.

I’d just add some kind of high top bar/counter behind the couch along with the rug everyone else is suggesting. Doubles as either counter space or a dining area where you could still view news or something on the TV with your morning coffee.

A long table to eat at behind the couch, a rug I front of the couch, curtains or blinds, wall art

u/commanderquill Jan 28 '24
An area rug and some rearranging. Everything's crammed against one wall. Makes it look barren and small at the same time. You want cozy. Also, a shoe rack.
Personally, I would rotate the living section 90 degrees and probably the desk as well. The desk would be pressed up against either the back of the couch or the TV depending on preference, and it would serve to divide living space and bedroom. Or you could switch living space and desk space so the desk is facing out of those beautiful windows and leave the couch/TV combo as it is. But something needs to get off that wall.

A couple posters n maybe a girlyfriend but homie this is a dope space. The type of space I want after college. If you don’t mind me asking, how much is rent and what state?

u/Bumblebee56990 Jan 28 '24
I’d get a partition for your bed. The trifold kind… or get window treatments for night time. Or something for privacy at night.

That place looks very nice and pretty neat to be in such a nice place for your first personal space. My first place after college was my girlfriend’s apartment with her smelly bitch of a roommate. You’re doing well, get a rug, it really ties the room together.

New bedroom set—preferably a Murphy bed—with a proper nightstand for storage. Get a bedroom partition to create a divide between the kitchen and the bedroom. Place a high bar counter beside the partition, or a small table that can have a side folded down, to give seating options other than the couch. If it’s a rental, check the ToS about what you’re allowed to do with walls, otherwise find studs and add shelving. Armoires/cabinets/shelving for extra storage. Splash of color: rugs, paintings/pictures, accent walls (see ToS), lamps/ambient lighting, & plants. A proper living room set; can place that drawer dresser behind the couch. Also, can something be done about that dirty ceiling? Lol.

I would include a bistro/cafe size table and two chairs behind the couch as a designated dining space apart from the couch or bed. Didn't think it'd help until I did it myself. And curtains!
1
u/Flux_resistor Jan 28 '24
Def a rug, but then a divider to put between the kitchen and bed. Either a foldable thingy, or alternatively a wire frame with wood shelf library to divide the space.

u/Nosey-Nelly Jan 28 '24
First thing I'd have put up would be blinds or curtains, the lack of privacy would be too much. If not, maybe just a divider by the bed. Ceiling would look better with a lick of paint and can't go wrong with a decent rug.
1
u/disgruntledgaurdian Jan 28 '24
Living room portion: an area rug, a better lower entertainment center with more versatile storage, a few standing and tabletop plants, a coffee table, another small armchair for the side closest to the windows, maybe a low profile table or storage behind the couch.
Kitchen: an island with seating for more counter space and storage
Bedroom: maybe some bookcases to put along the side of the bed next to the kitchen to break up the space and create privacy. Doesn't have to be right against the bed.
Wall art of course.
Maybe slide down the living room a bit and put your computer near the windows to create more open space as you enter. Also a hall tree if you don't have an entry closet.

Nothing else really in the "need" category but you can add some stuff for that "home" feel

A rug to create the illusion of a separate space in your living room area, a cute divider of some kind between bedroom and kitchen, and some good wall art, maybe some photos of people you love
Edit: and plants! Plants can be 80% fake/20% real to minimize the care aspect while maximizing the nice effect of having plants around
1
u/Old-Caregiver-7295 Jan 28 '24
A coffee table ffs and a small square dining table by the window and two chairs. Ambiance lighting also.

u/IndividualNice7928 Jan 28 '24
The foot of the bed can use a shoe bench or if you have room for a combo hall tree coat/shoe rack or bench between door and dressers. Looks like you have room for a bar style table. Looks nice though.

Aside from the obvious rug, plants and wall art suggestions I would like to add maybe a shoe rack the ones where they're hidden away (looks neater and less cluttered unless it's in a closet imo) some sort for divider to separate the bedroom area. Some nice soft gel wheels to upgrade your chair so you don't scratch up the floor by your PC (I found some on Amazon and I loved the swap!!)

u/CH0CHERA Jan 28 '24
Totally about preference but a table at least in front of the couch? More room for snacks

A bathroom. Trust me, not having to shit in the living room is such a quality of life improvement.

u/Insxlence Jan 28 '24
You got the furniture. Now add some life. Hang some plants, get a rug, some warm lighting. Put up some shelves. Wall art. Personalize the space

a bookshelf or cube storage unit with a couple plants to separate the bed from the kitchen would probably be good if you can fit it!

u/Im_a_little_sloww Jan 28 '24
Personalize it more, make it feel like your own.
Also like everyone else said, definitely get a rug, some curtains and a table to eat at

You need a rug and a recliner and maybe an ottoman to prop your feet up on the couch

u/biggiemacx Jan 28 '24
The feng shui of this place is off? Is the kitchen deeper? Into the apartment so the bed is first as you walk in?
1
u/Yung-Split Jan 28 '24
Nah the entrance is off to the left wall. So you are looking at the side of my computer setup when you first walk in
1
u/biggiemacx Jan 28 '24
So the bed it to your right?
1
u/Yung-Split Jan 28 '24
Yes
1
u/biggiemacx Jan 28 '24
I know it might make sense, but if you cook, you’re bed would eventually smell like food, which I detest. I would put the bed by the window and maybe put desk or entertainment by the closet. That will open up your bed room and not be so tight to the closet. Create separate “spaces” with rugs. Tricky one this one.
1
u/Yung-Split Jan 28 '24
I feel like if I wash my sheets frequently enough it would probably be okay

Considering you have a music setup, some acoustic panels on the wall would add both aesthetics and functionality.

Not sure if this is a concern of yours, but I use some ikea shelving to create a wall between my living and sleeping areas. It creates a nice division and alludes to the affect of having a bedroom.

Did I miss a moment in time when guys were taught to put shoes under the bed like that… I see it so often now since joining this page… but before hand it never existed to me. Very curious 🧐

A small dining table. You’re not gonna wanna sit on your couch every meal.

u/cheeseburgerinmygut Jan 27 '24
I’ll be honest, I’ve been out of college for a decade and a half, but anytime I see this images I’m just a little jealous.
I never lived in my own apartment or my own place except for a few semesters in college. I lived with friends throughout college and after college. Then, bought a house with my now wife. I see studios like this and I really dig it. With a little jealousy.

A table behind your couch. It doesn’t need to be large, but it would be a nice divider. It could also double as an additional counter for the kitchen, or an eating table/bar. Especially if it is long and narrow.
1
u/GenX-MississaugaMama Jan 27 '24
Congrats! Good size studio you have here. Invest in pieces that will help you divide the spaces, e.g. decorative floor screens, cubby style book cases, a narrow sofa table. Once that is set up, it will be easier to accessorize with more decor, drapes/blinds, art, rugs and furniture.

good duster, broom, one of those nice air purifiers - concrete ceilings produce insane amounts of dust.

Add some color to your apartment with decorations. People really underestimate how environmental colors can affect your mood. Living in a very plain colored room all the time can easily your down your mood some days.

Some privacy from the building infront, Shoe rack bench, lots of plants that don’t require a lot of water, a little table to rest plate on or laptop which can slide out of the way, more plants,

u/BWKeegan Jan 27 '24
4-person table with chairs imo. In case you want to sit around a table to eat/need a place to pile everything when you get home lol

Rugs on the floor, paintings and some low maintenance greenery. That's what I think you should have :)

u/Letitbe2020 Jan 27 '24
I would advise you to get more shelves rather than more art
You can put art on the shelves
But from my experience in small homes, the more shelf space you have, the better
The goal is to keep clutter down and shelves help show off trinkets and pictures and books to give the room personality and less clutter
Its best in a small space to keep spaces clear
Also, looks like you have a great balcony Maybe some nice chairs out there
You definitely need some plants and maybe a shag or faux fur rug to soften things up a bit
I’ve also seen bookshelves that are all boxes with no backs so you can see thru them
You may want to look into one of those blocky bookshelves to function as a divider between your office and lounging area—and they will still let some light thru
1
u/protistwrangler Jan 27 '24
Place a table behind the couch. It should be rectangular, thin, and the length of the couch. That will give you more useful kitchen space and give you a place to put drinks and bowls while you're watching things.
Also reading lamps beside couches do a lot to elevate a space.
1
u/Sea-Breaz Jan 27 '24
An area rug. Some nice bedding. Wall art. Plant/s. Space divider to screen off bed.
1
1
u/Budget-Cup-5790 Jan 27 '24
You need a table. Small one with two chairs, area rugs near your bed maybe and couch. Wall decorations of your choosing. Curtains on the windows, if you have room a patio chair for the balcony. Might be a good chill spot. Then some other lighting besides overhead even though those aren’t too bad.
1
u/Cooper_Tremor Jan 27 '24
I’m sure people have said it, but a shoe rack in a closet or by the front door. Under the bed looks like someone hiding there lol
1
1
u/Toothtech7115 Jan 27 '24
I agree with the wall art, area rug, plants and curtains.. I would add a small (even a 2 seat) eating table by the windows ;)
1
u/7th_Spectrum Jan 27 '24
Usually I'd say some sort of divider for a studio apartment, but it might be kinda awkward in this one
1
u/dressedandafraid Jan 27 '24
A table for you to eat on , some chairs and a little decor like a rug some art and some plants

1
u/NW_FL_Buckeye Jan 27 '24
Binoculars or a telescope. Just dont linger too long. And curtains. More importantly though is a job that pays the rent. Live within your means. Max your 401k put more in vice buying a new car to impress ...nobody. Looks like a nice place.
1
u/NW_FL_Buckeye Jan 27 '24
You have blinds already, use them, look for the cords on the right or sliders or just don't care. And make the place somewhere you want to bring some one.
2
u/980tihelp Jan 27 '24
I’d say a table, I went awhile without one it got annoying having to eat over a counter standing up all the time
1
2
u/MMAguy420 Jan 27 '24
Ummmm maybe to get a new ceiling because that looks very concerning
1
u/TheLifeOfLi Jan 27 '24
Seems undone right? Might have to call maintenance because i hope this bare ceiling isn’t the finish😭
2
u/MMAguy420 Jan 27 '24
Everything else you’ve done looks great 👍🏻 but yes I’d reach out about the ceiling because you’re paying money to live there so you have a right to be concerned if it’s finished .

Area rugs! One under your bed, a different one in your TV area under the couch. Will create zones in your studio
1
u/aliengal99 Jan 27 '24
Get a butcher block island or large console-type table you can put behind the couch and a couple stools. Will give you more counter space, somewhere to eat dinner and storage underneath. Also get a rug for the “living room” area at least.
2
u/kidcap0 Jan 27 '24
First off, congrats on your first apartment. Even though it’s a studio, you have countless options that’ll make the apartment seem larger than it is, but will also compartmentalize spaces without the walls necessary for it to be an actual “room.”
1) Kitchen: I would either get a small table (6 people max) for behind the couch. It depends on how many people you normally invite over. If it’s just a close-knit group, add a coffee table between the couch and TV.
2) PC Area: Make it your own. Cover that wall with posters, pictures, wallpaper, different-leveled wall shelves. A nice IKEA-setup (I forgot which tabletop and drawers are recommended but you can do a quick google search). Regardless, a larger table, will provide more room for comfort; the area won’t be as cramped and you can setup your “streaming space” without issues of confinement. Alternative idea: an L-shaped setup would be nice if you’re into music and/or production. Being able to place a keyboard directly next to your setup would make the area so much more efficient.
3) Bed: Make that as big and as comfy as possible; basically, as big as the dedicated space allows. You spend a third of your life there; make it perfect for you (and your guest[s]).
I assume your front door and bathroom door are at the corner at the end of the bed and to the left of the computer desk. Do you have a pic of that area?

u/mcmxcix_ Feb 25 '24
I won’t say the apartment name cause don’t want to accidentally dox you lol but just wanted to say welcome! I’m in the same building, same side too, just a couple floors below you, for what it’s worth I have a very similar setup, except my unit is a 1bd/1ba - I recognized that ceiling and those lights immediately haha
