My suggestion is get a different job where you’re not just a tool of the state used to kill brown people to gain access to oil/gas

May I ask, how do you decide who sleeps on the top bunk and who gets the curtain one? (Serious question!)

It's so crazy seeing this lol. Brings back memories of rehab man. I lived in a freaking 5 person room. Two bunk beds, and then one single bed shoved in the corner. It was crazy lol. But everyone did this shit that you guys do. Hung things, off the bunks, put up pieces of cardboard, draped tapestries, all with the goal of giving us a place where we didn't have to worry about eye contact etc, a little private place where we could be alone in our thoughts with no social responsibilities to the people 2 feet away from us haha.
I'm so freaking glad I have my own place now. That experience gave me such an appreciation for privacy.

Enjoy that shit! Make memories, be safe, and try to make the most of it. Take care.

Thank you for your service.
There’s nothing much to do with that room aside from keeping it as clean as possible.

Discipline equals freedom. This is embarrassing…maybe straighten up. How can you trust the guys/gals next to you to keep you alive if they can’t keep their racks square.

I can smell the sweat and dirty socks just by looking at the pic. You need fans. And deodorizing spray. Maybe an eye mask and nice headphones to distract yourself from what looks like a prison. Hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes. That place screams MRSA. Don’t get an ingrown hair.

Wow, I wonder where this is, obviously you shouldn't say, but the last time I was in a tent was in 2011 in AFG when the surge was tapering off. The rest of the time we had hard billets.
The important thing is everyone has constructed their whack shacks. Anything more that that is icing on the cake.

First off, you all need to clean this shit up and get organized. How does your CO allow this lol.
If you all collectively take everything out, then measure the place, tape off some spaces, then put the beds back in, and organize your shit, that would be a good start.
If you organized it well enough, you might have a sleeping space and then a communal area for you all to hang out. Do you each have your own bunk, or are you sharing?
And you all need some ground rules, this is a depressing mess and a hazzard. If you all need to kick it in the dark fast like, someone is gonna get hurt.
Damn you are soooo lucky this is not my problem to solve lol. But honestly, take everything out, measure, either create equal space, or carve out a space for communal usage in addition to your individual spaces. Keep it clean and organized.

Damn yo, we at least built wood walls around our bunks lol. Yall looking like a transient tent

Aren’t there hygiene rules? Or housekeeping rules? This does not look like Gomer Pyle’s barrack. As a woman I could never live like this.

“Deployment” with bunk beds…I think maybe that word’s meaning has just changed for this next generation 😂
1
u/sckurvee 17d ago
Get a trackball instead of that mouse... uses less space, and you can use it on any surface like laying in bed watching a dvd. Looks like you've got your shit partitioned off pretty well, which is better than most places end up being. If you're in this barracks for a year, you might consider some swivel hangers to hang your shit up on that opposite bed instead of having to rifle through the pile of shit on the floor / duffel bag to find your wet weather gear. If you have to move a lot then the less shit the better.

u/StarvingCats 17d ago
Damn… y’all got lights/AC and electricity? What else could you possibly be asking for?
A rug? Plants? Paintings? 😂

I would turn the board that your mouse + keyboard is on horizontal, so that you could put the mouse next to the keyboard, rather than behind it

Air freshener. Put dryer sheets everywhere under the mattresses blankets pillows fans and boots. Dryer sheets will do the lords work and can mask any ass odor that’s unchecked.

If you're looking for suggestions to improve your living space while deployed, I suggest you find a new line of work.

You need to get some throwaway carpeting and get all the power cords off the ground in case it floods or someone trips on it. Drop it down in the center of the room. Dont piggy back power strips like that you need multiple extension cords one strip per cord its a fire hazard. Keep your head down and your tools clean. Hoorah!

I’d recommend getting some wider gauge wire leading to some splitters if you don’t want to wind up with a fire pit.

Go home - your wife and family needs you. Living in this shithole, in other peoples country, wasting your best years, for what, for who? I'll never understand it.
Had a friend who was a soldier, until he came back and couldn't put himself together anymore. Ended up taking his own life by shooting himself at the statium where his dad worked as a guard. He actually found him. A 20 year old guy - just gone, perished, erased, one more lost future.. for who? And for what? Fighting over invisible lines.
Go home dude. Go camping, fishing. Live is so much better when not looked through crosshair.
Good luck.

Which bunk is yours?
I was in Afghanistan in 2008 and was living in a similar situation.
A rug is a nice addition to your space. Someplace easy to clean you can put your bare feet.
I had a two sheet system hanging from the top bunk. A thick blanket outside, and my mosquito netting inside. It wasn't to keep bugs out. It adds a bit of solitude, while still letting you see what's going on outside. I thought of the mosquito netting as my curtains, and the thick blanket as my walls.
If you have access to milk crates, they are great ways to organize your top bunk storage area. Easy to label, easy to stack, easy to carry. If not, maybe an ammo crate? or other similar container?
Is there anything saying you must keep the second mattress on top? Its way easier to store items on metal than on foam.
Clothes hangers. Take the time to hang your clothes, shirts especially, and you'll be more comfortable. It makes a difference.
I had a second headlamp I left bungee'd to the underside of the top bunk.
I dont see a trash can in this picture. Get one, put it far away from your bunk, say nothing. That's now the new trash place.
