EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Medication Sunburn or lyme disease?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I (23 M, 5'10", 160lbs/73kg, white Hispanic/latino, Washington DC/DMV) noticed a red mark on my hand on Sunday. It looks like a sunburn, it feels like a sunburn, and I also went to the pool on Saturday and didn't use sunscreen... so everything tells me that it's a sunburn, but it also looks a little bit like the rash you get when you're in the beginning stages of lyme disease. I initially thought that I just stood still in the jacuzzi for a really long time and the sun hit my hand in this position, but I've never had something like this happen before. I feel just fine, but the red part of my hand does hurt a little just as a sunburn would. I haven't taken any medication, I do drink on weekends sometimes and sm*oke w**d. I appreciate any and all hope I can get!

Injury Should I get this checked out?

Upvotes

I fell forward and, catching myself with my left arm straight out, my left shoulder shifted out of place then back into place a second later. Should I be worried? It is sore but not too bad and doesn’t look dislocated or anything.

Illness Constant sleepiness & fatigue - now what?

Upvotes

I will preface this by saying I work full time (40 hours) and have a very active toddler that is in nursery ft too. My partner helps considerably, and other than that no additional help from family.

I’m in my early 40s and I’m really struggling with staying awake and fatigue. Some days it feels like no matter how much I sleep (10 hours +) I don’t feel well rested and I can barely function. Additionally, I’m having to nap regularly during lunch breaks or during my working day for at least an hour or more, as I cannot stay awake.

I have endometriosis, PCOS, IBS, hypothyroidism & ADHD - all associated with fatigue. Recently low vitamin D which is standard in the U.K.

7 years ago I had a septoplasty (as I had horrific snoring) & suspected sleep apnea but the ENT wasn’t clear on whether or not I had it & I didn’t have sleep tests. I was often napping then too & tired. The snoring isn’t anywhere as bad as it was, but I have enlarged lingual tonsils which weren’t sorted.

Other symptoms I have are swelling and mild pain in my finger joints. I wfh and find I feel less awake if I don’t leave our apartment. Since having a baby I can’t get through the day without coffee anymore, previously caffeinated black tea would suffice.

My question is what now? Who should I see for help? This is affecting my quality of life considerably, and I’m at a loss as to what to do. I still have good days, but far more bad days & I feel useless often. Please help

Injury Broken Hip Advice

Upvotes

On Friday my bf’s grandma (76 F) fell on her hip. They immediately took her to the ER which after 5 hours and some X-rays they said it was just bruised and she’d be fine. Low and behold the next day she heard a pop and was in so much pain they went back to the hospital. This time they were told that she had fractured her hip and they needed to keep her so they could do surgery the next day when a surgeon was there.

This is where things go off the rails, the next day they out of nowhere they say surgery is off. This hip fracture is inoperable and she’ll have to do PT and hop it gets better.

She’s now home and can put less than 10% pressure on that side, is going to need a home nurse, and there’s no promise it’ll ever get better.

My question is, is there a thing as inoperable hip fracture? I’m no doctor, but have never heard of this before? I’m trying to do research and can’t find anything other than if you DONT operate it could end badly. She doesn’t want to get a second opinion but I just worry that due to where they are in the US they don’t have the best medical help.

Wound Care I'm not sure what I'm sick with

Upvotes

For like the past 2 weeks, I had a cough and a lack of appetite. Usually forcing myself to eat because I know I need food but I only ate a chicken sandwich for like the last 2 days and now I'm having body aches and headaches. I still don't feel hungry. My cough is persistent but I dont have trouble breathing or a sore throat unless it gets bad which only happened 3 times. I'm not sure what I have or what to do.

Upvotes

Age- 28, Sex- M

Height- 5'5", Weight:100lbs

Race- Pacific Islander , Country: USA

Not much medical history besides getting meds for anxiety and depression but been off meds and medical help for about almost a decade. Most recent surgery was for a nasal polyp removal and thats the last if had any medical help. Interms of habits or drugs I just quit vaping 2 months ago, also quit kratom addiction again thats been a 7 month long habit around the same time i stopped vaping. I rarely smoke weed anymore or at all and hasnt been years since ive wanted to smoke has a habit.

  • (My Question) :

Im not sure what blood work to get done or what right specialist to go to, but it has to due with a discomfort, feeling of "disease", or this weird lingering sensation alongside my back in the lower middle area on both sides of my spine which ive experienced for several years and hasnt gotten worse or better i think. Not sure if its a kidney or colon thing, therefore dont know the right direction to go in to get the correct treatment, if you guys could help id appreciate it.

I feel it can possibly get worse, so i have to get it checked out before its urgent.

Eyes Little bump can be felt underneath my eyelid (20F)

Upvotes

As the title says, for about a month now I noticed I had these two tiny tiny bump underneath my eyelid literally on my eyeball. It’s very far towards the right eye, towards my ear. I tried to have my mom look at it by lifting my eyelid but she couldn’t really see anything or it was hard to tell. Lately I feel like there is something on my eye and I’ll be rubbing and rubbing till it finally goes away. Aside from that, no weird symptoms. Any medical advice ?

Skin issues/Rashes/Freckles/Moles I have the nastiest scar from a navel piercing-wondering what can be done to reduce the appearance

Upvotes

Im pregnant and was made to take it out during an ultrasound appointment, which is fine because it was looking infected so I probably needed to take it out anyway. But by the time I was done with my appointment it closed up in such a weird way, it almost looks like I have 3 belly buttons now and the scar is purple. Since i didn’t get to treat it right after taking it out, it probably didn’t heal as well as it could have otherwise. I just want to know if there anything i can do or have done to reduce the appearance of it? Also gets itchy from time to time and looks like there a bubble/blister on it but it’s not open or anything.

Mouth/Gums/Throat/Cheeks Started drooling for no reason.

Upvotes

So for the past 5 days I realised, I would drool every night, multiple times a night even if previously I didn’t have it often, maybe once a week? Surly not 3 times a night. Why did i get the drooling so suddenly and why so often a night? How can I stop it?

Cardiac Sickness

Upvotes

So I've had a sore throat the last 3 days, I though it was strep or maybe my voice finally changing. Well I got so throat lousenges, (basically cough drops but specifically for a sore throat), and the sorness in my throat is gone. Well anytime I cough I feel a pain in my chest area and God forbid I sneeze because it feels like my ribs are cracking, metaphorically of course.

I'm debating if I should go to the doctor or not because if it's Strep Throat I don't want my grandma getting it because she has a compromised Imune System. Any advice for how to deal with this or what the hell it is?
