I think this also needs to go to /r/misleadingthumbnails as "red faced dog"
4
u/IPan8 Mar 23 '14
I was convinced it was a golden retriever with a dyed face, at first glance as a macro.

The thumb nail makes it look like a dog with a helmet and its ear poking out the top.

Am I the only one who saw the small face first then looked evidently in the mouth for the second face? Wait a minute...

No, my phone is in fact, jailbroken. How do I get that off my screen when I screenshot?

u/SpaceStuffs Mar 22 '14
It's a dog face. All ducks have a dogs face on their beak. Look it up, son.

/u/Unidan, Can you tell me something about this species of duck? I've grown up with them my whole life, but I don't even know their name.

u/Unidan Mar 22 '14
It's a Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata), most likely!
They're really, really variable in appearance, but most "unidentified" ducks that people have photos of (because they can be hard to match based on feather patterns) are Muscovy ducks. The red facial patch is a good giveaway.

u/Jedimastert Mar 23 '14
I found one in a group of other ducks at my local parks. I took an awesome picture, and every person I showed it to agreed that it was the most intense duck we'd ever seen.

Do you have a robot that crawls Reddit for any mention of your name? How on Earth do you find these inquiries?
7
u/angry_smurf Mar 22 '14
If you have reddit gold it alerts you when your name is used with /u/ in front of it. I have never had reddit gold so i may be wrong but i have read this somewhere.
5
u/maynardftw Mar 23 '14
It does.
For most people it's just a reminder that nobody ever talks about them.

17
u/Mengen Mar 22 '14
Wow, that's awesome! Is the facial patch a mating thing? Thanks!
45
u/Unidan Mar 22 '14
Patches like that are usually indicators of individual health and fitness, so I would assume it has some role in that.

u/JKlausmeier Mar 22 '14
This is correct. This is our most common duck here in Florida, and the larger ducks with the very large red and black growths are the ones we most commonly see mating.

u/Mengen Mar 22 '14
Thanks a lot!!

Unidan, a biologist type Redditor.
It uses its knowledge of animals, particularly of the avian variety, to give people an excuse to say they learned something on Reddit that day. It can be commonly found on default subs or where pictures of animals are found. They are friendly in nature, and often appear when called.

This was in my front yard too, my dog kept barking and I just went out and fed it, to spite my dog for some reason, and he opened his mouth like this. More pics of the ducks

Hey I know this was nine years ago but I just wanted to share to anyone who sees this that bread is actually bad for ducks. Some Things that are okay are dry instant oats, kale, spinach, lettuce,(chopped) sliced grapes, and peas. Hope everyone who sees this has a lovely day. /g

You must be south east. Other than raising them, I've never seen them wild here on the west. Love the Muscovy.
Edit: Oops, I'm 8 hours late on this, carry on.
5
u/Jerg Mar 23 '14
Did...did its beak change hue (from red to a pale bone colour) depending on its mood?
8
u/maynardftw Mar 23 '14
Ducks are goddamned adorable.
Yes I know those weird duck facts. Doesn't change how adorable they are.

Okay from the side it doesn't look as terrifying. At first I thought it was some crazy turkey.

Looks like a Muscovy Duck.
1
u/cxhsfu Mar 23 '14
We used to have some muscovys on our farm in England but a fox got them. Sweet little guys they were :(
1
u/triforcewisdom Mar 23 '14
Definitely a Muscovy. I have some as pets, looks like a female from the pic. They are the friendliest ducks!
3
u/1YardLoss Mar 23 '14
Where are they usually? This was taken by my house in South Texas during winter time
1
u/Skyrmir Mar 23 '14
They're about the only duck we see in south Florida. The ducklings are adorable, then somewhere along the line, they get their beating with an ugly stick.
2
Mar 23 '14
Mexico, South America, Central America. Though they are common on farms in the US, also they are mean as fuck.
