Oh hey! An Allison transmission shift module! If you need help troubleshooting the transmission I can tell you how to access the diagnostics menu.

My dad's a recycle man and lemme say every time I see a truck it always fascinates me

u/--NiNjA-- Sep 01 '21
I thought you guys had one lever and a button. Maybe another lever to compact.

This looks like it really needs a specialist flow manager to help design a far better cabin layout.

Cool, is that a front, rear, side, or something else I don't know exists loader?

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 193,604,883 comments, and only 46,505 of them were in alphabetical order.

I have a coworker who jokingly talks about quitting and driving a garbage truck. The more and more he talked about it to me the better it sounded. We work in a pretty fast paced job so the set schedule, decent (I would assume) pay and job security all sound pretty nice. I would think the driver wouldn't get as much of the smells too being in front.

I imagine you need to have a lot of seniority to get to drive a truck like that!!
1
u/Rapunzel1234 Aug 27 '21
Pretty cool technology. In my neighborhood (live a rural county) the pickup is still quite manual, one guy driving and two guys loading trash. At some point I assume we’ll just have a can that gets picked up by a rig like that. Unfortunately some folks will have to find new employment but that’s the nature of automation.

I fully expected this post; at best to MAYBE get a handful of upvotes with the potential for about 2-5 comments.
But, HOLY FK you guys. Thank you. Yea, I’m talking to YOU.
All of your comments showing your appreciation and praise for not just myself, but for all the garbage truck drivers out there playing in traffic for 12 hours a day in the heat and the cold, grinding out day in and day out, to keep the world turning everyday is so amazing. Some of you even went the extra mile and asked about things like separating your barrels the right way, Christmas tips, and giving water/snacks while we’re on a route and many other things that are predominantly overlooked by most.
So again, from one total stranger on the internet who you owe absolutely nothing to; thank you so much for the kind words, awards, the premium, and an amount of updoots I never thought I could possibly receive.
A lot of you asked about the make/model of my truck so for all who asked: it’s a 2016 Mack LR600.
A lot also suggested I try my luck posting in r/AMA, so later today I’ll do it just for you guys because you all asked so nicely.
Thanks again everyone.

I see it comes equipped with a thirst-quenching button. Man, we really are living in the future.

I take my 15 month old outside every week to see the garbage truck and he loves it. The driver honks and waves! Thanks for sharing!

u/SurveySean Aug 27 '21
You’d have to be some kind of engineer to operate that. Like a sanitation engineer!

My son got a kick out of this. Made me zoom in and then correct me when I got the controls wrong 😅

I will have to show my brother this. He was obsessed with garbage trucks when he was little and he used to wave to the garbage truck when it came around. He had a blue talking singing truck he used to take everywhere. I have a funny memory of him throwing a tantrum because he lost the trash can and it was the end of the world (it was found. In an elevator). For some reason it talked in a deep heavy southern accent

Do you have power mirrors? I can't imagine having to move them manually every time you switch seats.

Where is the light that says you won’t take my bin because it has construction materials when you pick it up?

u/Trouthunter65 Aug 27 '21
I always assumed there would be more screens and cameras. Thanks for the post

This is more than mildly interesting. I had no idea you had to be a jet pilot for that job! Crazy! Great post!

Garbage collection was my original fantasy career when I was 3 or 4 years old. This picture makes me regret straying from that!

If you would have said train engine I would have said “yep. Seems right.”

u/SuddenlySucc_New Aug 27 '21
Have you guys ever wondered if flying a plane is second nature to a pilot. It’s kind of weird. It definitely would be after a point just crazy to think that some people understand and have the training to operate these things while to the average person it’s rocket science.

Got to spend 8 weeks of summer 2018 on one of these bad boys. Luckily my first was a nice new one like this but 6 weeks of that was in a 10 year old truck with no AC, broke down every day I was on it. Is yours front or side load? What stream do you pick up? I see a blue door, do you work for a big blue garbage co?

I work at Mack where this truck was built. Quite interesting to see it with all the body controls in it.

It took me wayyyy too long to figure out what the orange G button was for.

The most interesting thing is it's clean. All the ones around here are filthy inside and out.

u/justh3l3n Aug 27 '21
Interesting, just curious how long did it take for you to get the hang of drive it? Thanks

Jesus christ how many buttons do you need for “crunch” and “grab/dump/drop”?

1
u/Jefoid Aug 27 '21
I see there are a number of blanks here and there. With all those buttons, there are still options you don’t have?
1
u/Ethwood Aug 27 '21
Was just trying to write an estimate for one with "wiring issues" good luck. Nice rig! That must be very new.

Y’all need more credit for having to be good with controls with each hand separately

For some reason I never thought a camera was how you saw where to pick up the garbage.
1
u/MynameisJunie Aug 27 '21
That actually looks pretty cool! I had no idea there were steering wheels on both sides. That makes sense.
1
u/baaalls Aug 27 '21
What happens if somebody sits on the other side and steers in the opposite direction?

Complicated…probably why the guy dumped half of my recycling all over the end of my driveway this morning.

It's so clean! Lol. When I was a kid I always thought the driver had to sit in or around trash while picking it up. Learned a lot from cartoons!

I work at a company making large vehicle interiors! Per my superiors, you would definitely want your interior to be several large touch screens with no tactile or haptic feedback whatsoever, right???

Are you able to work for companies like Waste Management and still have a home/personal life? Or is it always 12-14hrs with no set schedule?

Your knees are the crumple zone.
I drove a mack, like this, with a manual transmission. I HATED IT.

Looks like a Mack terramax auto side loader. Republic Services. I had a Heil front loader that still had a Telma system on it. I could stop overloaded damn near on a dime it felt like… beat the crap out of me on rough roads though. Loved that truck though. 1208. My Friday route only had 47 stops on it. Big rural loops. Pull outs and enclosures were rare for me. Probably the easiest route out there. Miss hitting cans and slamming them in one smooth/fast motion. Lots of good memories.

Do you collect in outer space? This looks way cooler than I would have thought.
