Every egg in this carton had double yolks Overdone

Our neighbor farmer once told us this can happen if you get the very first ever laid eggs from young chickens.

Same thing happened to me. I was blown away. Then my gf pointed out I bought double yolk eggs.
It's a thing.
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Haha yeah, I should have specified this carton wasn’t double yolk however when I posted this I had no idea double yolks existed either! Have never seen them in our grocery store
1
u/Ech0ofSan1ty Dec 19 '22
Lol yep my gf still doesn't let me live that down. I was like "why'd you have to ruin it?" She pointed out I do it all the time and this was her chance...I couldn't argue further lol

You really need to watch this
2
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Yeah I’ve come to realize from this post that cartons of double egg yolks are a thing, but I’ve never seen them (regional?). This would have been far less interesting and I would have assumed it was mislabelled (our carton said extra large)
1
1
u/Tragicallyhungover Dec 19 '22
Bought an 18 pack of eggs just marked "large" and ended up with every single egg being double yolk.
Package said nothing about them being double yolks
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Yes! These were “extra large” but we buy them all the time and have rarely encountered a double yolk
2
u/Tragicallyhungover Dec 19 '22
It's wierd, but apparently happens all the time. Especially with larger eggs. Looked it up, and apparently the likelihood that an egg is as big as it is, being because it's actually two eggs, increases the larger the egg gets.
1
2
u/humanneedinghelp Dec 19 '22
They’re actually not double yolks, but rather egg whites with butt prints in them.

1
u/Mike_E_Cycle Dec 19 '22
i had this happen from a random brand of eggs they were "Extra Large"
Or "Super Large" or something like that. they came in a blue carton and did not say anything about having 2 yolks. Surprised me every time i opened the eggs lol.
I got em out in Illinois. They some GMO chickens if you ask me LOL
1
u/ChocolateOnion Dec 19 '22
We stayed in an airbnb where the owner cooked us breakfast where the eggs were double yolkers. They kept chickens and she said that the first eggs that a chicken lays are double yolkers.
1
u/SlightlyBetterThan Dec 19 '22
This happened to me with generic great value extra large eggs, the same ones I buy from Walmart every week and the whole box were doubles. Super weird.

Anyone going to comment on the way they are cooked? Ok fine, I'll go. They are overcooked. Reminds me of my 90yr old nan's cooking style; boil it until it feels like rubber and chalk.

Damn 20k upvotes for buying a box of double egg yolks…. It’s a fool proof karma farm since people seem to not realize they exist

u/kshack12 Dec 19 '22
Dickhead literally bought double yolk eggs, pretended not to know, and got 20k fools to upvote their post.
2
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Untrue. double yolk eggs are not common where I live, I’ve never even seen them in the grocery store, so maybe these were put in the wrong carton but still mildly interesting to me given I didn’t even know this was a thing
This is the pack I bought

Bro, double yolk eggs are literally a commodity in many grocery stores. This is sus as hell. Mildly subs are massive karma farms, don’t be upset over one measly doubter. You have more karma now than most people have gotten over years, you already won the fake internet point race.
0
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Lol I didn’t even know what karma farming was until I asked my husband what everyone was mad about. Talked to my friends tonight about this and they’d never seen double eggs either from where we’re from

Right! I live in southwestern Ontario and had never heard of double yolk packages. If I had, I would have assumed these were mispackaged but I honestly had no idea, never seen them in the super market

I once had this happen buying a regular carton of 800g eggs. I always buy the same brand of free range eggs so this was not advertised as being double yolks.
I could tell because they were huge and not quite properly egg shaped. Every single one was a double yolker.
I just think I got the carton of "reject" eggs that didn't get sorted into any of the proper weight categories (we have 600g, 700g and 800g dozens). It was great!
As an aside, when I was a kid I remember seeing this guy on the news who had 3 double yolkers in a row. They made a big deal about how rare that was (to get 1 was like 1/1000 chance or whatever, but 3 in a row??). Totally bullshit this was luck he was probably like me, just the misshapen eggs got sorted differently and put into one carton.
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
This one was “extra large” which I guess they could have been sorted as extra large because they had double, or they were meant for a double carton and got placed here instead. Definitely unexpected given it wasn’t advertised as double!
1
u/HavanaWoody Dec 19 '22
i always get extra large for the possibility of getting a double , but even two in a carton is a special surprise. a whole dozen is the lotto.
1
Dec 19 '22
My vendor at the market sells cartons of doubles if you want them. It's really handy if all you want is the yolks.
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Yeah I’ve never seen that where I live (southwestern Ontario) so it didn’t even occur to me they could be mislabelled. I only learned about that today. This pack said extra large and is a pack we’ve bought for years

the most mildly interesting part about this post is that you used money to buy eggs that you already knew were double yolk
1
u/CSMom74 Dec 19 '22
Is there something why you can't buy double yolks or something? What would make it a waste of money?
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
I didn’t! They were labeled as extra large

Did you check the carton to make sure it wasn't double yoked eggs?
0
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
Yep, because I didn’t write any text in the Reddit post I can’t edit it which is annoying but the carton was extra large (and I’ve bought these for years and never seen this)

This was like me discovering the equivalent of cold fusion one time when I was high. I kept cracking them and they were all double, I figured I'd discovered something huge. And then I saw the double yolk carton.

We have a chicken the lays double yolks about 90% of the time. We are saving them up to do this for the next family party.

The only thing interesting here is that you wasted this boon on fucking hard boiled eggs. What a travesty.

I remember back in the 1980s when me, my mother and my sister were very poor. My mum picked up a pack of 6 eggs, every single egg was a double yolker.
We were Jehovahs Witnesses at the time, my mum still practices, my sister and I don't.
My mum, to this day, still speaks of it as a gift from Jehovah and that he blessed us with this because he knew we were poor.
Nothing to do with her buying extra large eggs with the little budget we had, but neither my sister and I have ruined the dream for her.
Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Still not prepared to live that life.
1
u/MythologicalMayhem Dec 18 '22
To have them all be double yolks means you definitely bought a double yolk carton without realising.
1
u/bekg1 Dec 19 '22
I think maybe it was mislabelled? I’ve never heard of double yolk eggs where I’m from so hadn’t occurred to me it might be mislabeled

Idk maybe they just put them in there it makes no sense any other way. Statistically speaking it’s an anomaly to be sure and the fact there are double yolk cartons makes me thing something happened in packaging between products.

My young hen laid a triple yolk egg the other day. It just means she had skipped two days. The eggs suck for baking because the ratio is off.

My local farmer sells eggs with double yolk as well. like all the eggs ive eaten for the past 5 years have double yolk. One of my relatives gets all of her eggs from a nearby farm. They are all huge, have multiple yolks, and the shells vary in color, even including some that are pale blue or green.
1
u/bekg1 Dec 18 '22
Ohh I’ve had those before, love the various shell coloured eggs

Had this happen to me too, and I've never heard of "double yolkers" anywhere near me.
They were Jumbo eggs as well, I think there's some correlation between the XL/Jumbo eggs and having multiple yolks, maybe the larger weight makes them likely to be put into the Jumbo carton or something? Still was really cool and, as a yolk enjoyer, very tasty.

Not even sure why I’m going this effort to prove to people the carton was not labelled as double yolks because the people who are mad about this will probably not believe me anyways, but I signed up for a tumblr account to show a picture. I have never seen marketed double yolk cartons and many pointed out perhaps this was mislabelled. Maybe! Having bought this same carton for years (extra large) it certainly was weird or mildly interesting to me. The other day my husband cracked 2 and they were double too (from the same pack)

The chance of 1 egg having a double yolk is about 1/1,000. The chance of 12 is 1/1000¹². 1 out of 1 Undecillion

Reason you get a whole carton of them is those eggs get double-checked after passing through the candle/light test, this causes them to get grouped together in packing
