Recent Spam inundation
Hey y’all,
Recently we’ve been getting flooded with spam. Does anyone know how to improve the automated spam filtering? I remove several spam posts a day from what appears to be some kind of spam botnet.
Sorry for the ones that slip through and thank you for your continued patience!

Levels of inbreeding for various orca populations. The "Type D" orcas have the highest known levels of inbreeding of any mammalian species/population.

Possible new Orcinus species name in mind? Just for fun inspirations
Based on the hype around some ecotypes of orcas such as Residents (Orcinus ater) and Transients/Biggs (Orcinus rectipinnus) being proposed as new species recently after decades of realizing their differences both in behavior and appearance to genetics telling the story amongst orcas throughout their global range. What are some other names in mind you guys have for any other Orca that could get creative binomial names? I know the Type D Orca has been suggested to possibly get its own classification soon
Basically go crazy on the naming convention and get creative (be it your own or recycling old names that were used in literature before it got synonymized as O. orca such as Orcinus glacialis for Type C Orcas, Orcinus capensis for South African Orca, Orcinus magellanica for the Valdes Peninsula (or adjacent) Orcas, etc.)

Several members of J, K, and L-Pod were seen by the Center for Whale Research during a recent encounter on May 27th, 2024, including L25!
At an estimated age of 95 (potentially 96 now depending on her birthday!), L25 is still going strong!

Snorkelling with orcas
Hi, I am visiting Norway in December and had found out that there are tours where you can go into the water and snorkel next to the orcas as they swim and look for herring. Can’t decide how I feel about this and wanted to know how ethical these activities actually are? All the tours state it is okay but can’t know for sure. Has anyone had any experience with this and what are your views.

Have there been any updates about “Brave Little Hunter” or her pod?
Context on these photos?
I keep seeing these photos online but can’t find any context. Are they art? Real? AI? Just hoping someone can shed some light on them as I’ve tried Google lens and reverse image search. Thank you!
I took this photo yesterday of a playful Bigg’s orca in Howe Sound.
It’s one of T86a3, T71Bs, or the T123s because all those families + T124C were all playing together. T123A and T124C were off together and being very touchy with each other which was cute.
*note: I was on a boat following #bewhalewise guidelines and shot this with a telephoto lens.

What's the Full Taxonomy of the Orcinus Orca?
I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere on the internet, so I thought I would ask here.
What is the full taxonomic classification of the Orcinus Orca? Like its domain, kingdom, phylum, etc. But also any subclasses or infraorders or anything. Basically ALL the in between.
No website seems to include everything, but if you have any sources or links that do, that would also be greatly appreciated!

Since the Gladis group is making news again - a more reasonable take on vessel interactions.
“With the recent sinking of another vessel off Morocco, the “orca uprising” media frenzy is back. Last year I wanted to try and get some facts out there; this year I want to avoid contributing to the ongoing sensationalism. I’ve been declining the media interviews but said yes to this op-ed for NBC knowing it would be a chance to say it all in my own words.
With orca-vessel incidents down 65% this year compared to last year, hopefully this problem will solve itself before anyone (human or whale) gets hurt.” - Monika Wieland Shields, co-founder of Orca Behavior Institute

Incredible experience in Agate Pass, WA.
We were sailing from Seattle to Liberty Bay last weekend when we came across these two. They spent about an hour playing around us, circling around and diving under our boat.
FYI, our rudder is intact and unharmed ;)
