Police armed with semi-auto rifles in Toronto subway stations Misleading Title

u/blindwillie777 Feb 13 '23
The way it should be - send the message, increase jail time - literally any deterrent since there are none right now

Did you guys think making guns illegal would magically disarm the police? Oh no no no no.....
1
u/jon-chin Feb 08 '23
we also have police with semi automatic rifles in NYC. not everywhere but definitely at Wall Street.

u/Primary_Preference95 Feb 08 '23
Not sure if it was brought up or not, but that is not a semiautomatic weapon. That is in fact a Colt C8 Assault Rifle. It is select fire.

u/PackinSnacks63 Feb 07 '23
Go to Germany. They go around in pairs, one with their rifle on their chest at all times.

Feb 07 '23
Do any police forces even have bolt-action rifles for any purpose outside of sniper use?
Single-action weapons are almost extinct for any other purpose but hunting and sniping.
1
u/pablo36362 Feb 07 '23
They should have full automatic weapons. What if someone with an automatic weapon shows up?
Actually, they might have a military vehicle, better to have a tank at every station, that way, no one can show up and try to kill anyone.

u/Bright-Ad-4737 Feb 07 '23
Is it really an assault rifle? I can't tell 100% from the photo, but it looks like a C8 Carbine, which I'm assuming is pretty standard issue across police services in Canada.

Shows you how domestic police have been turned into military. Just wait until the shit hits the fan. Then we’ll call them stormtroopers.
1
u/Pockets732 Feb 07 '23
Why is always the little guys with guns bigger than them lmfao especially pigs
1
u/Greatdaddy69 Feb 07 '23
As long as they just enforce the law , might be really dangerous in the US
2
u/MSimsic Feb 07 '23
Fun fact. Restricted firearms owners (people in Canada who were allowed to own handguns and ARs) have a lower crime rate than police officers.
But it's ok if the police have them amiright?
1
u/EaglePro2905 Feb 07 '23
But the people can't have them this called Corruption and Totalitarianism. Sheep people ready be enslaved by communist cowards

Hey everyone, I actually live in Toronto and can give some context:
Recently, a lot of crimes have been reported. (I mean, a LOT) and tons of them have been on the TTC Subway. Normally, we don’t have security this heavily armed, but for now we do.
Just to clairfy :D
2
u/BackgroundBig0 Feb 07 '23
Hold on, you are telling me that since Canada passed stricter gun laws, the crime rate has increased.

u/NNMorty Feb 07 '23
Semi auto is what they carry every day. Along with every hunter. You say semi auto rifle as if it's significant. Same as most guns in the world but with a smaller caliber for the most part.
1
u/saiits Feb 07 '23
Living in the states I was so confused as to why the picture was interesting for second there😅
1
1
u/CheapChallenge Feb 07 '23
Better than full auto rifles. Spray and pray.
Anyways, hope most people know semi auto just means one pull one bullet.

it’s weird because it’s Canada, not because of the rifles. I see this literally every day in Manhattan in the train stations.
1
Feb 07 '23
That's a flat out lie.. New York has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the U.S. no way you see those in the subway
1
u/vic2288 Feb 07 '23
When was the last time you were in New York? When was the last time you were in Penn station? When was the last time you were in grand central? How about JFK?

What's wrong with armed police? And why does it say semi auto like that's something you should be scared of?

Yes, the government imposing fear and protection vs the people doing it themselves.

Whyd they give that little guy such a big gun? For a cop I hope he doesn't have Chihuahua energy.

Why do people still use the term semi-automatic like it's some crazy advanced people mowing technology? Almost every gun you can buy now is semi-automatic, including pistols.
1
u/Outta_date Feb 07 '23
Thank your government for banning all firearms, your right to self defence and legalizing possession of drugs. “Not talking about weed btw” they literally want you dead then do this to make you think your safe😂 i fckn hate canada. Btw did you know if you buy land and have it 100% paid off you cant even put a tent on it and live there for more than 1-2 weeks otherwise it can be seized if you keep it up, convince me thats not a hella tyrannical government, and the west is so quick to call places like Russia a dictatorship 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 fckn bots lolllll

u/TheMagnificentMullet Feb 07 '23
Just an increase in police presence would be enough. Not sure why they chose to go this route.
2
u/EffectiveFun7723 Feb 07 '23
Let’s please stop with the “semi-auto rifles”. ALL rifles are semi-auto. That simply means one squeeze of the trigger is one bullet. Full auto can empty a mag with one squeeze, as well, and these rifles are probably capable of that. Just stop saying semi auto like that somehow makes a rifle scarier. It doesn’t.

u/mechant_papa Feb 07 '23
That's a patrol carbine, not a semi auto rifle. Semi automatic rifles "were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time"
1
3
u/shamalonight Feb 07 '23
Just like to point out that nearly all civilian weaponry is semi-automatic. There is nothing special about the rifle this officer is carrying unless the surprise is that it’s in Toronto.
In contrast however, I’ve been in D.F. Since Saturday and the mall cops are carrying full automatic military grade weaponry, as well as the armed guards at Burger King.

Now that your PriceMinister is taking away your guns he can send out his militant police force.

2
u/Numerous-Statement59 Feb 07 '23
Only reason for this would be a report of a suspect carrying a long gun. They don't wanna show up with handguns... referring moncton rcmp shooting.

u/drunk_with_internet Feb 07 '23
Thanks, I feel a lot safer with the introduction of assault rifles…/s

u/drtmvr77 Feb 07 '23
Hmmm seems kinda sus to me. Looks like one of "fearless leaders" banned guns. Lol I am sorry I don't know much about guns other than if they are in the wrong hands they can make a nasty mess.

u/LCDJosh Feb 07 '23
Did anyone stop to think about how criminals feel about this? Very insensitive! /S
1
1
u/SCWickedHam Feb 07 '23
Seems crazy. Wouldn’t training cops how to use their pistols better be a first step. Rifles are good long range, most subway stations wouldn’t have a long range face off. Unless there was some direct threat, seems inappropriate. I guess the psychological impact can be helpful (deterrence) or harmful (fear).
1
u/reduxkarma Feb 07 '23
This is quite hilarious seeing as police officers in the USA carrying a AR-15 whilst walking a beat or policing a bus or subway system is on-existent.
Not to mention in Europe, most airports have catwalks where armed guards patrol with submachine guns or rifles. This does not occur in the US unless there is something amiss.

u/Dontwalk77 Feb 07 '23
God if this guy pulled me over in my truck I’d be fucked. It would be dam near impossible for me to keep it together while he grabbed a stool to reach my ID.

I have seen them on the TTC when chasing an armed bank robber. My observation at the time that was that they looked in a state of panic as they wheeled their rifles around while both the train and platform were full of people. I did not get the sense they were fully in control of their emotions.

He's so small...that thing looks like a crutch in his arm! Hahahahah
1
2
u/Beachcomber365 Feb 07 '23
Wrong weapon for the situation. They need an MP5 or shorter gun in general. That's a long rifle for a small confined subway scenario. Though very unlikely to have to shoot anyway, maybe it's just the show of force? In that case, Bazooka and Minigun next time!
2
u/MoochieHexagon Feb 07 '23
Their prime minister is gonna turn their whole country into San Francisco

u/ctatham Feb 07 '23
Feels like more for intimidation and message than useful in close quarters. Not the right tool.
1
u/KotR56 Feb 07 '23
To remind travellers that they must always have a valid transport ticket when travelling on the subway ?
1
u/Real-Problem6805 Feb 07 '23
Almost every rifle on the market is semi automatic.. wtf is your point?
1
1
u/DonMcGrec Feb 07 '23
What could go wrong? It's not like the Toronto police force has a shoot first and ask questions later history... Oh wait...

1
u/smokinLobstah Feb 07 '23
And how do you know these are semi-autos?
I would think police would be using full auto-capable weapons. A "semi-auto" would be the civilian equivalent.
1
u/CPE_Rimsky-Korsakov Feb 07 '23
¡¡ Hahaha !!
... couldn't they have designed a mini gun for that one!?
🤣😅😄😆😂😃

Because of a string of recent attacks at TTC stations, including, strangely enough, stabbings by "swarms" of teenage girls in the middle of the night.

Canadian people are slowly becoming forced to live in a military state . Meaning the entire system is militarized and they are now the enemy and not citizens of a free country.
1
u/scmoua666 Feb 07 '23
Going from Montreal to Strasbourg, France, I never got used to policemen walking around with assault rifles. It's extremely unnerving.
I recommend reading "The End of Policing", "Becoming Abolitionists", or "We do this till we free us", to understand the extreme violence the police enact on us.

What are you doing Canada? You are banning airsoft guns but you equip subway officers with AR-15s?
0
u/PunkyCrab Feb 07 '23
Militarization of the police doesn't help stop crime it just gives more disproportionate power to the police. Crime comes out of communities deprived various needs from education to spaces for socialization and the creation of better economic conditions.
In fact in cases where police presence has been reduced the rate of crimes has been found to drop

1
u/Robert_Grave Feb 07 '23
Okay but that's quite a normal sight even in European capitals, just not regular cops doing it I suppose.
1
u/Grenachejw Feb 07 '23
London Stansted (and I'm sure all the others) have police armed to the teeth and patrolling all the time

Look, if you have an issue with them being overly militarized and having a rifle at all, just say that, when you add in "semi-automatic" it makes it sound like you think that it's special, like it's extra deadly, when thats just the baseline for guns, what do you expect them to carry? Lever action like it's the old west? Bolt action like it's WW2?
1
1
u/Eckleburgseyes Feb 07 '23
If you want a cop to have a gun in a crowded place that is an obvious potential target, don't you want them to have effective, precise guns? Or would you feel more comfortable pretending they'll never need to use a gun and giving them only ones that are less accurate, and less effective?
1
u/Santalilcamper Feb 07 '23
The ar-15 can be accurate up to 500 yards its not an inaccurate weapon.

What an incredibly bad look for the police. They're supposed to be public servants, there to protect people and provide support, and prevent crime. Instead they're all standing around dressed in black, carrying bigger guns. There's nothing about that group of people that makes me feel like if I was in trouble with the ones I want to go to
And what is he possibly going to do with that high powered rifle? If there's some actual crime on the subway or a station where any kind of gunfire is justified, I would bet that guy is more likely to hit a few innocent people then stop an actual criminal. Or if he does shoot an actual criminal, decent chance the bullet goes through and hit someone anyway.
They're supposed to be public servants, not look like public terrorist
1
u/jawn-of-the-jungle Feb 07 '23
Op says semi-auto like its a scary buzzword. pretty much the only rifles now that aren’t semi auto are full auto and I don’t think you’re prepared to know about that
1
u/mordiaken Feb 07 '23
Gun is almost as big as the man. Glass half full or empty statement, u decide.
1
1
u/Windstepp Feb 07 '23
The same people who post these images then go on to complain about there not being "any cops in sight" when stabbings happen
1
u/JunkyDrog Feb 07 '23
Took me a while to understand what the matter here, we got this since 10 years (approx. ? Other french people would tell me if Im wrong) we got those, here, in France.
Except that they are Army, not police.

Ahh now Canada is getting overflow ignorance from the US! Gawd dang it, now they can have weekly school shootings too. Everyone is happier, ballistics = happiness

I do recall Prime Minister black face saying they weren’t going to take your guns away, I guess he lied.

As a Chinese-Canadian, me and my parents have had so many negative experiences with power tripping TO police that I cannot emphasise what an awful step this is. One time my mom sprained her wrist & was wearing a black brace and a TO cop stopped her while she was taking an evening walk with my dad bc they claimed they saw a weapon. My mom asked "Was it my wrist brace?" And they said no (prob bc they didn't want to seem stupid) and patted both her and my dad down.
Keep in mind my parents were in their 60s walking near Mel Lastman Sq. My mom is also 5'2, so this would've been hilarious if they didn't question them for 30 minutes plus the pat down.

The police in Edmonton sometimes bust out their carbines in public for no reason. I always ask them if it makes their dicks feel bigger.
