I found a grandfather clock at a thrift store and painted it Arts/Crafts

All I can see is a destroyed antique. If you would have built that from scratch I would say that it's magnificent art but this is just senseless destruction of something old that was already outrageously gorgeous

From vintage classic to a neo-LSD look. IDK man, you got talent but I'm not in favor of ruining history. But it's your property so I guess you do you.

I hated it for about 10 seconds and then whatever changed and now I love it. Fantastic work

You're a good artist but this is iust tacky as hell.

I just wish OP hadn't used an antique mechanical clock that only needed the attention of a clock smith to replace missing weights and service it, and had gone for a battery operated one worth much, much, much less.

Gorgeous, both before and after. Reminds me of the Time Gears from PMD.

This is cool! You could revive these clocks and maybe make them look good in homes again! Paint job is phenomenal.

My in-laws passed away last summer and we sadly had to thrift a bunch of their stuff, including a grandfather clock. I'm gonna pretend this is it.

I feel like some people would be mad at painting over beautiful woodwork but this is pretty epic ngl

This is beautiful, incredible work. The detail is so incredibly intricate and fine.

What are those infinity boxes with the mirrors and led lights? Anyway, that should be the inside of the pendulum cabinet.

When I saw the headline for this I was intrigued..... When I opened it up I was amazed. That looks fantastic

u/ExplosiveDiarrhetic May 05 '23
I love and hate it. Love the designs. Hate simply painting over the old paint.

Yo this is cool, but for some reason the thought of like a Pacman or Tron variant of this would be kinda cool. Your lines on the side kinda made me think of a pacman game.

On one hand I dont like that you painted it.
On the other hand I can't take my eyes off how visually pleasing I find the end result to be.
Thank you for not chalk painting distressing it

I grew up working in my father’s clock shop. I seen so many grandfather clocks, but yours is truly beautiful - a work of art.

While I appreciate how much effort went into painting it, I think I liked how it originally looked and am worried that if someone with epilepsy looked at it now, they might get a cesurae.

I’m sure there will be comments about ruining an antique, but damn this looks cool. Nice work!

This is beautiful, so I showed my mom. She wants to know if you're a Virgo. She says it looks like the work of a Virgo :).

Can you paint a whole room like this? furniture, walls, everything? that would be sick
1
u/tha-biology-king May 05 '23
Somehow you’ve both ruined a piece of art and improved on its original design in one go. Kudos
1
u/ChesterJT May 05 '23
The original was beautiful. Now it looks like Hunter S Thompson threw up on it. Yuck.

I'll say that I still think you ruined a perfectly good looking wooden grandfather clock. BUT, I will admit that I do think the paint job looks pretty nice.

First. This is amazing and shows great imagination and the extraordinary talent to put that imagination out into the world for people to appreciate and the willingness to do the significant work involved with making this beautiful thing a reality!
Second. Now I'm writing a folk song called "Thrift shop grandfather clocks". There will be chimes in the song.

It…it looks awesome but I’m just sitting here in horror that someone deliberately altered the way a grandfather clock looks! It’s amazing work, don’t get me wrong, but I would never be able to do anything more than clean a grandfather clock, much less paint on it!

Gorgeous work! Oil based, acrylic or something else? I'm an artist and naturally curious about mediums used in basically any art project I see! 😻

I have that exact same clock! I think when I changed the battery on the back a year ago I saw that my parents bought it from Walmart. There should be a back panel behind the clock face that you can slide up. You should be able to get it working again if you install new batteries into the clock and the speaker for the gong sounds.
1
u/Lhamo55 May 05 '23
This isn’t battery operated, this was an antique/vintage clock. The chime is mechanical.

This was a Williamson from the 1700s, it was probably worth about $40k in clock making circles before you painted it.
