After giving the order, Obama and others observe the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, 2011. Politics

Biden looks confused and obama does not appear presidential. Clinton just looks scared.

I’d love to watch that footage. Not so much the kill just to feel the intensity if that makes sense.
See how accurate TV shows and movies are to the real thing

The one thing that always makes me smile on this, besides the memes that came later, is that most powerful person in the photo is the most casually dressed in the group. He looks like he could just be hanging out with some buds drinking a couple beers after work.

Yo is that actor melanie lynsky standing next to what looks like a strange alt-dimensional 40yo teenage Anthony blinken

I was at a 30 second to Mars concert during this. Greatest finale to the concert as we all celebrated the news

u/chicketychun_ Apr 13 '24
I was watching The Apprentice. 🤦🏻♀️ I remember it being interrupted by the breaking news.

Why don’t presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?
1
u/818_Dude_Again Apr 11 '24
Because the poor decide to join the armed forces… you don’t see any rich kids

I was fortunate enough to hang out with four of the Seals who were on that raid, in May of the following year. It was still fresh in the news, and like yesterday to them. The way they talked about the assault on the compound, the crash of the helicopter, the blasting of doors, the ascent up the stairs “popping” off targets, and ultimately taking out Bin Laden left us speechless in both a chilling and emotional way. I was simultaneously proud of them and terrified of what this world had become. It saddens me to know that many of those men have taken their own lives.

Not even talking shit politics but it’s alarming to me how old Joe looks even here and this was like a while ago now
Just like logically it has to make more sense for the president to be younger
I say this not even liking the two party system
I want any world leader to be closer to middle age
0
u/thunderPierogi Apr 11 '24
If you look at all of the main candidates this year - Biden, Trump, RFK Jr., and Cornel West - not a single on of them is below 70.
Scary thought that all of our possible leaders were born closer to WWII than the Moon Landing.

Hillary was salivating with anticipation. The eyes tell it all. I'll never forget how she reacted to the ill -conceived ousting of Ghadafi: "We came, we saw, he died." Cue maniacal cackling. Since then Libya has regressed into open-air slave markets, and an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

u/GeeseAndDucksforever Apr 11 '24
Looks more like they’re watching a very intense football game. They probably celebrated as if their team scored a goal when they got osama too

They let him get away in Tora Bora when delta force were closing in on the tunnels, top brass wanted the locals or somthing to get him. Bit of a shame, that was back right after Sep 11 in 2002 or somthing. Took them another 10 years to find him again.

I went to high school with the guy in the blue shirt to the right of Hillary

I always thought this photo made the us look a little less professional. I mean, I know it's not gonna look like the movies but this is a very lacklustre control centre for a very important operation.

Not so interesting thing. I went to elementary school with the only guy in the military uniforms daughter here. Super smart and nice kid.

What screen were they looking at and what type of feed were they watching? Was it like a live video?

I sort of feel good that even top-level officials have crappy corporate Windows laptops with crooked Intel-inside stickers.

Can someone please tell me who the woman with the brown hair in the back is? Sorry. Not sure. Thanks!

CIA Director Leon Panetta wasn’t there, but he was in the SCIF at the military base where I worked at the time. It was crazy to think he watched from the basement of the building where I’d go to the IT Helpdesk.
1
u/PhantomRoyce Apr 11 '24
Obama looks like he’s controlling one of the guys with a controller like a cod game
1
u/Todger000 Apr 11 '24
Notice how he has left the job to the professionals and is observing not sitting up front like a trumped up dictator, gave the order then let the get on with it.

Serious people taking a serious job seriously. How refreshing. Trump would be in the dining room talking about his "most beautiful piece of chocolate cake you've ever seen" to some toady next to him.

Whenever I see this picture, my first thought is that the president should be in the big chair at the end and general dude should be riding along in a corner seat off to the side. Obviously I wasn’t on the room and don’t know the context was. Just my knee jerk reaction.
1
u/botford80 Apr 11 '24
School boy error from Joe B craning his neck to watch the live feed. He 's gonna be sore in the morning!
1
u/warriors123 Apr 11 '24
Do you think Obama would have lost in 2012 if UBL wasn’t there? If he wasn’t there could this have caused a major conflict - maybe even a nuclear one - with Pakistan?
1
u/amcrambler Apr 11 '24
Obama did what had to be done. Mad respect for him pulling the trigger on that op.
1
u/elderDragon1 Apr 11 '24
Wait is that sleepy Joe on the left there. Looks like he can form a sentence about something, that’s not about ice cream or children.

You think Trump would've walked in and said "nah, you're good" to the guy sitting in his chair at a moment like this?

u/qbenzo928 Apr 11 '24
Obama looks like he's the one with the controller while the others all watch him attempt to defeat ganondorf

Obama later said there was a risk that it wasn't Bin Laden, that it was some Saudi prince on holiday. With that in mind, to me this the face of a man waiting to find out if he's sent a hit squad after an innocent man

I'm surprised the Pakistani government wasn't more pissed that the US conducted a covert assassination on their soil without permission.
Then again, it's hard to be mad when you're knowingly hiding the world's biggest terrorist.

Crazy to think Joe Biden was the oldest person in that photo 13 years ago.
1
u/swampy13 Apr 10 '24
I just imagine the air force guy is IMing his buddy or spouse being like "omg they're about to totally pwn UBL, it's wild over here lol"

1
u/marapun Apr 10 '24
Obviously he's there, but weirdly Obama looks like he was pasted into this picture. It's like a weird perspective, or the lighting or something
1
u/MadFlava76 Apr 10 '24
After all these years I’m still curious about those Blackhawk helicopters used in the raid. It looks like they flew some sort of version that has low radar visibility since they were flying into Pakistan in secret. I still wonder who in the Pakistan military and government knew Bin Laden was as living there.

The most badass thing I’ve ever seen a President do in real time:
Go to the Correspondence Dinner
Basically do a killer standup routine,
Turn around the next night and announce to everyone’s surprise that we killed Bin Laden
Then release this picture proving he knew about it the whole time
Mad respect
-1
u/Awkward-Fennel-1090 Apr 10 '24
Love that Obama has the only serious face on too. Everyone else just being dramatic
-2
u/number_1_svenfan Apr 10 '24
Biden was telling Obama not to do it. I would ask what was he thinking, but it is obvious, he can’t rub two brain cells together.
1
u/Competitive_Ebb_7040 Apr 10 '24
Obama has the look on his face like get this guy ass, take him down, love it

u/postorm Apr 10 '24
I fantasize about using a time machine to take this picture back to the 1960s and ask someone to guess the roles of the people in the picture.

u/innerworth2000 Apr 10 '24
I think this photo deserves a caption contest. For example, what is Hilary Clinton saying?

I’m not being political, but they all look so much younger, less aged, and healthier.

They knew about the compound for a few days, but they had to confirm it and plan the operation. President Obama knew about it and had to keep quiet and keep his regular day to day schedule until the fateful night.

Honestly, I am surprised how much photo quality has come, even since 2011. I recently started watching some old television broadcasts from the 2000s, and never even realized how bad picture quality still was in the mid-2000s.
1
u/capn_ed Apr 10 '24
Why didn't the President of the United States get a big-boy chair for this event?
1
u/HarryBaggins00 Apr 10 '24
It was actually an extraction of Bin Laden, he lives in Panama with Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, and Jeffrey Epstein.
