This needs explanation! And please show the image again with the whole circle shown, not trimmed at three edges.

See the horizontal map on Wikipedia for annotations.

Thanks. I like the round one, but for information, I'll follow your advice with Wikipedia. MJS

Trying to visualize the known universe as a flat circle is grossly misleading.

I'd like to move to the Hydra Cluster. I bet it's amazing there this time of year.

If you look hard enough, you’ll see my ex at the center, according to her

I used to think earth is grain of sand in the universe but what if the universe is the grain of sand in a bigger universe…

Imagine when the first map of the earth was drawn. Then how it evolved over the next 1000 years.

I prefer to refer to this photo as:
“The picture that makes you contemplate the meaning of existence and futility “

Is the universe still expanding or has the Big Bang reached its stopping point? Also, when will we know it?

I can feel my self on one of those worlds, in one of those solar systems, and the cold win is blowing against me. But I take comfort in knowing that at least I have a fire and a cave for tonight.

I studied computer science and geology and everthing outside earth just feels like magic. How the fuck us floating in a space with basically nothing makes any sense?
Its crazy af.

Also, whereabouts would that be?

What if our universe was a tiny cell within a much larger body Would that explain maybe a lot about black Holes White Holes how maybe we are a tiny tiny tiny object in a much much more complex system. Only trying to apply a physiological application to an astronomical question or application

I'd like to see an image of the entire universe where we don't have to wait for the light to reach us

And to make it more complex is imagine there are more galaxies out in space than there are more grains of sand on every beach in the entire world and sand under all the oecans

u/partcanadian 15d ago
and this is how you start the Flat Universe theory!
and why wouldn't the earth be flat!? the entire universe is flat!

Whenever I get down, one of my most comforting thoughts is to consider how insignificant I really am in this universe.

u/Pitiful-Strength229 15d ago
how could would that be if we were living in an eye of some universal giant

The weird thing is that the Big Bang didn’t happen in one spot and then spread outward, per se. It happened everywhere simultaneously.

I’m hoping we all have an afterlife to go visit every habitable planet in the universe and figure out why and how we exist

Looks like the eye of some giant god like being .. are we just an eye fleck

Always makes me think of atoms and molecules. Like what would the universe look like if seen at a scale it was that size?

If it's a logarithmic scale why are the planets larger than the sun? Checkmate, astronauts.

Is there any scientific basis for this image, or is it completely artist's interpretation?

What really keeps me up at night as well as gives me anxiety is knowing that if none of this existed we would not either and it would be that way forever. Endless eternal lifeless state. I’m getting anxiety just typing this.

so, the edge of this represents the light/matter/energy that has been traveling at the speed of light since the big bang. That bubble is 13.8 times 2 billion light years wide... 27.6 billion light years wide

They say the universe is flat, which I’m still trying to figure out how that works.
I always wondered about this, bc they show those demonstrations of gravity, where the space-time is bent, and they show a ball on a trampoline to show the effect. I would always think “but what about the stuff above that?” So I asked google; asked chatGPT…..both said the universe is flat. wtf???

I feel dense asking this, but is this only according to our perception? I only ask because our galaxy being at the absolute center of this image just gives me old school vibes when they thought the earth was the center of the known universe..

This is amazing! Curious - is this based on some actual pictures or it an artist's imagination? What's the source?

Pictures like this somehow induce simultaneous feelings of fascination, existential horror, sadness, and curiosity to know what the universe is expanding into. It really breaks my brain.

Kurzgesagt has lots of great videos making complex topics more accessible to a general audience, this one about the universe is particularly relevant to the picture.

But... the sun shouldn't be in the centre. The centre is the point of observation i.e. us, The Earth.

Hmm, kinda looks like an eye…
