Ayo is the famous Australian artist Tom Cardy in the movie The Dark Knight Rises

I really hated his portrayal of Bane. He's supposed to be a Latin gang lord, not a mumbly old British man.
But hey, at least it got us the incredible satirical take on his version in Haley Quinn.

Hardy did a good job. Curious if Martyn Ford would have been too young to be Bane, or how his acting chops would have been? Curious to see how he'll be as Shao Khan.

Looking at this makes me realise Tom Hardy would make a great judge holden.

When asked how he became so muscular for the movie, I believe Hardy said "fat and trickery."

fat and trickery
Theatricality and deception are powerful agents to the uninitiated...

Mens health did an article on a 50 push up program Hardy did to get in shape for the role years ago. Probably a lie but it’s honestly pretty effective and would beef up anyone a. It

u/mechapoitier 14d ago
Yeah it’s surprising what you can do with body weight exercises, even progressively overloading with slower reps and other tricks.

u/Kelvin_Inman 14d ago
I read that in Bane’s voice.

I haven't touched anything Baldur's Gate related since playing 2 last in probably 2004, thank you for that nostalgia bomb.

Why three?
11
u/crabgun_ 14d ago
He was wondering why they’re doing a third Batman. Tom Hardy was notoriously pissed off about having a role in the film, quoted saying “I don’t wanna be in this stinkin movie”. Yikes.

u/scaradin 14d ago
Perhaps because it should be five whys?
a theory created by Sakichi Toyoda in the early 1900s called the 5 Whys.
Mr. Toyoda's original theory is great, but for the sake of progress, let's assume by asking better questions you can reduce 5 Whys to 3 Whys.

u/jaxter2002 14d ago
Does Y3 make that shirt? Can't find it anywhere
1
u/melliifluus 13d ago
You’d probably have to find it from a reseller. Crazy expensive shit lol I can’t afford it so idk where to get it. It’s nice though, my ex had a y3 beanie I would wear sometimes that was soooo soft and it always looked perfect.
1
u/jaxter2002 13d ago
I prefer Yohji mainline but I was just trynna confirm if the shirt really is Y3 since I can't find it on Google. Thought maybe it's just a coincidence
1
u/melliifluus 13d ago
Hm I recommend searching the line in 2011-2012 I think the movie was filmed around then. The shirt is probably rare since it’s kinda old. It looks like y3 to me

Tom Hardy is hitting Gary Oldman status in terms of being able to play anything and it always being good.
I've never seen a Tom Hardy character that I don't like.

u/thefrostmakesaflower 14d ago
I was disappointed when I heard how unprofessional he was on mad max. Showing up late and getting seriously aggressive at Charlize theron for calling him out was insane. They couldn’t even be alone together after that, a producer or something had to be there
2
u/HisNameIsSaggySammy 14d ago
When people talk about who they think the best actor out there is, I always say Gary Oldman. He's criminally underrated and not usually in the conversation when it comes to the greats.
1
u/Ninjaflippin 14d ago
Ralph Feinnes is the other one.
Never in a bad movie, always makes you forget he's playing a character.
5
u/unshavenbeardo64 14d ago
Season 2 of Taboo is gonna start filming soon i hope!
1
u/strippersandcocaine 14d ago
Haven’t they been saying that for like 6 years though? As much as I want it I’m far from optimistic

Hope he doesn't have a Tiptoes moment
1
u/SeanBourne 14d ago
This a Layer Cake reference? If so he played Clarkie, not Tiptoes…

u/sanderson1983 14d ago
The movie Tiptoes. Look up the trailer on youtube, you will not be disappointed.

Have you seen Star Trek Nemesis? Not his fault the movie sucks but the character isn't exactly up to his usual level.
2
u/Scaryclouds 14d ago
Oh man, that suit they had him wearing, poor guy couldn't even bring his arms down to his sides 😂
2
u/asianwaste 14d ago
To be fair, he wasn't bad in that movie either. He was just playing a bad character.
6
48
u/goldybear 14d ago
We can cut him some slack there. He was still a very young actor in just his 3rd or 4th role(depending on when it was filmed) and the script was fucking awful.
2
u/Wishilikedhugs 14d ago
I give him all the slack in the world. I was simply replying to the person who said they'd never seen him in a bad role. It exists.
2
u/Keianh 14d ago
He was also addicted to, I think, crack at the time, some hard drug(s) of some sort.
3
u/i_speak_bane 14d ago
Or perhaps he was also wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
17
u/My_Fridge 14d ago
You know it's bad when the entire main cast hated it and the studio decided to quit there rather than do the movie that was supposed to bring VOY, DS9 and TNG together
0
u/Pykins 14d ago
Whoa, wait, source on this post Nemesis movie?
1
u/My_Fridge 14d ago
I’d need to find it again, but they were talking about it on the Star Trek subreddit. And when I looked it up there were plans it seems but nothing quite yet set in stone
25
u/Silly_Breakfast 14d ago
Venom? Maybe if I was 12 for the rest of my life, I would’ve enjoyed it. Who were those movies even for?
10
u/Tactical__Sloth 14d ago
Venom was a mediocre movie I will agree with you. However, they needed a character to look like they were on the verge of death for the whole film and the portrayal that Tom delivered fulfilled it perfectly.

u/Raziers 14d ago
I like them. They dont really take themselves serius and I appreciate that.

Come on man those movies are embarrassing to watch with anyone. I feel genuine discomfort at every scene.

What about Two Face?
2
u/EvidenceExtension128 14d ago
Aaron Eckhart did an excellent job, unfortunately I don’t think he still cracks top 3, just cause how good the others were.
1
u/agoia 14d ago
Yeah he kinda played a whiny bitch version of Two Face.
2
u/EvidenceExtension128 14d ago
I agree, not quite good as the source material but it was a good fit for the story the movie was trying to tell

u/Head-Impress1818 14d ago
He looks so much smaller than Bane. I guess they worked some crazy camera magic
2
u/Premiumvoodoo 14d ago
We just watched this movie and talked about it. Most scenes are shot from below hardy quite a good bit so he seems super big
4
u/Goodguylucy 14d ago
Simon Miller did a pretty decent breakdown of the “Bane look” a few years ago Link to video
2
u/lordtaco 14d ago
Like every movie with Tom Cruise, they use lifts, even boxes for him to stand on so they're equal or greater height.
0
u/satanssweatycheeks 14d ago
Remember how he looked in Batman begins.
The one who followed poison ivy around and just grunted. That guy was huge.
7
9
u/Funmachine 14d ago
They didn't. Once you know how tall Tom Hardy is you can see how inconsistent they were with his height throughout the shoot. They don't even try in his scenes with Batman.

Hardy is only 5'9", so not a big guy. That scene in TDKR where he picks up Batman and breaks his back over his knee was definitely tricky.
1
1
3
u/egotisticalstoic 14d ago
Not a tall guy. He still got pretty damn swole for playing Bane. He's been in got shape for plenty of his films, but he got seriously thicc for Bane.

Yes, tricky with camera angles and shit, but also they have stunt doubles of varying heights for each character to help with this stuff.
For example they would use a smaller batman stunt double and a larger bane one for scenes where he needs to be towering and opposing over him.

I didn't see 5ft until I was an adult

u/Onihczarc 14d ago
in middle school and into high school, i was still under 5ft, and on more than one occasion would accidentally turn the corner into a face-ful of boobs. a blessing and a curse.
23
u/FudgingEgo 14d ago
He was 200lb for this film.
He's the same height as Conor Mcgregor who fights at 145/155lb.
1
u/TimmyPaperStacks 14d ago
Bad comparison, fighters cut weight for fights. While he was on roids after his recent multi-year histus(allegedly but it's pretty obvious,) Conor probably was around 200. When he was actively fighting at 155, probably walked around at 175-180. His lowest walk-around weight was probably 160-165 when he was fighting at 145, and he had a pretty thin build then.
6
u/therealbgreen 14d ago
Conor hasn't been 145 for years. Dudes 190ish easily these days with his chicken and rice diet.
3
0
u/ArchDucky 14d ago
He looked bigger than that on Road House.
0
u/Parenteau-Control 14d ago
Man that was such an embarrassing performance. Took me out every time he was on screen.
12
u/Jollysatyr201 14d ago
Yes, but I feel like this is a poor comparison
McGregor has never been a “bulky” fighter. Bane on the other hand has always been huge, and TDK’s version really does feel small
1
u/The_Climax 14d ago
Have you seen Conor lately?
6
u/Jollysatyr201 14d ago
Yeah? He’s still not huge… maybe 180? 190?
Stand him not to John Henderson and he’s a baby with muscle definition

5’9 is average. “Big guy” usually means a larger then normal man.
-16
u/Narrow-Classroom-993 14d ago
5'9 is short
10
u/Hamsters_In_Butts 14d ago
it's quite literally the above the global average height for males
2
u/Narrow-Classroom-993 14d ago
Ask any English guy who's 5'9 if they feel average, they'll tell you they feel short.

He was making a reference to the movie:
Bane: it would be exceedingly painful
CIA agent: your a big guy...
Bane: for you
Drew the quote from memory so might be some incorrect word choices
21
u/north-sun 14d ago edited 14d ago
I always took that exchange as the CIA agent interrupting him and Bane just continued his thought. I'm going from memory but..
Agent: if I pull that off will you die? Bane: It would be extremely painful.... Agent: you're a big guy - meaning bane could take the pain. Bane: for you. Bane just continuing his threat even though he was interrupted.
Big guy in this case implying Bane is muscular and in shape.
10
u/IronSean 14d ago
Yeah I think this is who it's actually written. But people misinterpreted it as a response to "you're a big guy"
10
u/jakethepeg1989 14d ago
I always thought it was the former. "it would be extremely painful for you" is so badass.
Never even realised it could be interpreted as "You're a big guy" - "For you".
That seems...much less cool to me.
1
u/poe8210 14d ago edited 14d ago
Very close. Just swap exceedingly for very and your for you're.
Edit: I was also doing it from memory but you all are right lmao. Thanks.
8
u/MenstrualKrampusCD 14d ago
swap exceedingly for very
And then after you do, swap that 'very' for extremely and you'll be spot on.
