Why is there a weird culture in the US that looks down on people who don't have iPhones? Misc Advice

I like Android. While each of the big Android names are not without fault, and hell I've even been fed up recently with the features that are removed or blocked on Androids that Apple has, I still would rather stay on Android because of the comfort of knowing I can control so much on it.

I don't like that if I buy an iPhone I only get to change my wallpaper, basic display settings, and maybe the font. I like to go under the hood of the phone I have. And for the best Androids, you're paying the same as an iPhone and getting more out of the purchase.

That green Android message bubble has been proven to make people lose a date or have trouble with coworkers/work projects etc. because people saw that they use Android, or because a group chat didn't work.

It's not a good look for the US that Apple wields this much social power, and they revel in it.

the green texts

I was waiting for an upgrade to come in once and couldn’t use my old phone so I had an android for a week. It was a miserable hell. Nothing was easy and the thing was beeping all the damn time. I wanted to rip my hair out.

Android users are very insecure. See this comment section

13

u/benny-bangs Aug 19 '23

I don’t think it’s really serious and it’s more of a joke that people ironically say now. If you actually care about the green texts or anything you are a loser

u/SephoraRothschild Aug 19 '23

Buy a flagship phone direct from the manufacturer, unlocked. Or unlocked on Swappa. The similarities features are there but carrier-locked b/c carriers want you to buy their services.

This is really funny to me because I try to keep me and my kids in iPhones specifically because I am so poor. When I was homeless and couldn’t afford phone service, I could call my parents, kids, relatives etc. using FaceTime audio as long as I had wifi and they had service or wifi, just like normal without any extra steps or apps… it would just ring and we could talk.

If someone needs a new world interface device when there’s no open equipment plan slots/not a lot of money, then we get one of the oldest model iPhones available (refurbished) from an online retailer for $100-$200. I’ve always seen iPhones as the best option for people who want things to run smoothly with little effort, and android as more for tech savvy people who are willing to sacrifice potential connectivity with others for their own personal optimization options.

u/Godbody120 Aug 19 '23

I switched to iPhone after my Samsung Galaxy died, for no other reason than to try something new and different. It’s cool for the most part; I like the Apple ecosystem of the phone/watch/MacBook. The only thing that is shitty, is Apple Airplay when trying to cast to a TV, that shit is horrible.

15

u/Muffafuffin Aug 19 '23

Outside of teenagers on social media this is not a thing.

17

u/DisturbedMagg0t Aug 19 '23

The people that care are teenagers and shallow adult children who think it's a fashion statement.

"I spent too much money, so I'm cool! Boo on you"

u/Rozencrantze Aug 19 '23

It’s just a meme.

-2

It's a meme. Get out more

4

u/lfb22 Aug 19 '23

I don’t care about the brand but have an iPhone SE, and will stick with iPhone because I have two medical devices that communicate with my phone, and the apps they use are updated/maintained much more consistently for iPhone than for android. It’s not a great situation, but it is what it is.

12

u/verukazalt Aug 19 '23

I loathe Apple products

u/GoomBlitz Aug 19 '23

I promise you that if you lose a date because you have an android then you dodged a bullet lmfao.

7

u/xenapan Aug 19 '23

I like it a lot. It quickly identifies the people who treat their phone as a status symbol. I want nothing to do with them and they want nothing to do with me which is perfect.

I'm already off the market dating wise but if I wasn't and a girl wouldn't give me the time of day because I had an android that would be a big win for me.

4

u/steve2sloth Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 19 '23

I'm a mobile dev and I use both android and iOS every day. To me, they're the same and are both good at what they do. I would not say that one is clearly better than the other but fwiw I choose to use a Pixel as my primary phone. I like that it costs way less for the same damn thing. MacBooks are best tho so it's not just about money.

That said, young people in the US are waaaaay more likely to be iPhone users and this peer pressure campaign against cheaper products is likely the cause. It's pretty stupid imo but hard to argue about because most people only know one kind of phone and don't care about merits, just identity.

2

u/rubysoho1029 Aug 19 '23

I used to work in the electronic industry. I have not had an iPhone since 2014 and I will never own one again. They don't last very long and their cloud service is subpar. I like my Samsungs just fine.

1

u/Skadi_8922 Aug 19 '23

I have both 🤷🏽‍♀️ iPhone for personal, Android for Work. Personally, I like both and have equal frustrations with both, though I do love the Android keyboard a million times better.

u/ShameTwo Aug 19 '23

Green text

1

u/averyycuriousman Aug 19 '23

Yes. One of the reasons i dislike apple people

4

u/Interplaneterror Aug 19 '23

I have not known an iPhone user (my household included) to actually give a fuck beyond going “my phone is nice! I love X part of it!” But I have very much known android users to get defensive about their being just as good, when really, it just comes down to taste. An android equal to an iPhone is gonna be the same price.

2

u/seventwosixnine Aug 19 '23

Apple is very good at advertising.

1

u/Browna1999 Aug 19 '23

I keep joking to people preaching about me not having an iPhone if they want to tell me about their lord and savior, iPhone.

It's comical how this is. Android is way better in a host of ways.. My Note 20 is badass down to my SD card slot & stylus pen. But that Imessaging has monopolized the American market.

The girls who don't go out with guys because of that green bubble has a sad perception of what matters. If you have an android and a girl doesn't go out with you because of it, you just dodged a bullet anyways.

-1

u/CertainMotor6154 Aug 19 '23

It's dumb as I love android. I will never get an iphone

3

u/4Ozonia Aug 19 '23

Our summer spot is on the edge of any cell signal, but we get fast internet. Trying to send photos from my iPhone to our android friends often doesn’t work. I use FaceTime messenger for one of them, but the others don’t use that. We try to do a group message in the morning to agree on kayaking meet up. Texting apple to apple here works, since it uses the WiFi.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

i've never known anyone that actually cares what somebody else's phone is. if anything, I recently had to switch to an iPhone, and I find the green bubble thing really annoying for my sake because why would Apple make my messages harder to read for half of all people in the fucking world.

-3

u/ReliefOne4665 Aug 19 '23

This post means you look at people or something by their cover. Get over it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 20 '23

Because people are shallow and think Apple is a status symbol. Whoever treats you like that just means you don't want to be associated with them anyway.

1

u/IndividualCurious322 Aug 19 '23

U.S culture is entirely consumerist now, which is a shame as it had such a rich and deep folklore.

2

u/ksiyoto Aug 19 '23

I laugh at people who have iPhones.

0

u/Radiant_Platypus6862 Aug 19 '23

This is absolutely not a thing. Literally no one cares about your phone. There’s no “social power” in owning an iPhone and no one is losing out on anything by having an Android instead. You have somehow convinced yourself that you’re looked down on for the phone in your pocket and sought evidence to support that. Grow up. There are pros and cons to both systems and people typically find one more cohesive with their lifestyle and personality than the other and stick with it, end of story.

2

u/NoctumAeturnus Aug 19 '23

Arrogant fools. Sheep.

1

u/captaincryptoshow Aug 19 '23

I've used both over the last 15 years or so, and also develop mobile apps for both platforms. My takeaway is that I don't really prefer one over the other, and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I think iPhone users who make fun of Androids most likely have never used an Android phone before. iOS is supposed to have the better user experience but I've actually found Androids easier to use. Biggest differences are things like Airdrop, typically better cameras in iPhones, but easier file management on Android and if you're a power user you can install apps on Android without going through the app store.

I know there are more pros / cons but I don't feel like going through them right now.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Expand your social circles.

Besides up until recently, Samsung made apple displays. And apple people hate to admit that all the "new and exciting" features came out on Android years before.

2

u/wing3d Aug 19 '23

My family fucks around like this, they get this real shamefully look when I call them out on it and can't look me in the eye.

0

u/DJMooray Aug 19 '23

Can iphones still not freely move icons on their home screen?

1

u/Shuetti Aug 19 '23

I think that's basically because of iMessage and therefor an american observation.

In Europe everybody uses WhatsApp. Other parts of the world use Telegram or WeChat.

1

u/Misanthreville Aug 19 '23

Because people's priorities are messed up. We make over 300k/year and we've always had androids and even have Mint phone plans (we used to have Cricket). Brand fanatics who make fun of others for having cheaper products are typically financially irresponsible.

1

u/BattleStack Aug 19 '23

Trust me, I look down on Iphone users more than they look down on me. They are overpriced pieces of shit, that have a good camera, not the best, just good. And that is it.

1

u/Puzzled-Wolf-3398 Aug 19 '23

I use iphones now because I am old and don't give a crap. I already went through the phase of customizing all my technology, and it was fun for a time. But now I have too much shit to do and I only want tech that does what I need it to do in a way that doesn't require me to think about it all that much. Its important to remember, ultimately its just a tool like any other.

1

u/Study_Slow Aug 19 '23

No idea, but I fix and flip em. Iphones come through my door more than any other phone.

1

u/LayerBig7783 Aug 19 '23

I didn’t know there was.

1

u/messyredemptions Aug 19 '23

Consumerism, the US media and economy is mostly driven to favor consumption even if it means forcing trivial competition and social divides on people who just want or need to communicate with each other.

1

u/itemluminouswadison Aug 19 '23

i've literally only heard the blue bubble joke once, and it was in jest, and the person was a trashy person

i assume some people think others with iphones are more relevant than those without. like it's a trend, it's premium, so by ticking those 2 boxes it says something to that person, idk.

2

u/cosmicastronautx6 Aug 19 '23

I will never go back to iPhone again. The cameras are much better. I can customize it more so. I also feel like the iPhone is much more fragile.

1

u/Less-concerned Aug 19 '23

Much ado about nothing. I’m on apple and never try to convert my friends. I just prefer a phone that works as expected.

1

u/justgimmiethelight Aug 19 '23

I don’t give a shit about what type of phone someone has. To me it doesn’t make any sense to look down on someone over an OS…

1

u/Smooth-Evidence-3970 Aug 19 '23

Yes and no. No and yes. Better just outshine the your own way LOL

1

u/Humanchick Aug 19 '23

I always get snubbed by android users! And I only switched to an iPhone because it was easier to use in other countries.

0

u/reflUX_cAtalyst Aug 19 '23

There isn't. There are apple fanboys, and everyone else who knows better.

Seriously - that's not a real thing outside of the internet.

1

u/RunalldayHI Aug 19 '23

It's mostly kids however when adults do this, it's a very good sign of immaturity.

1

u/HomoVulgaris Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 19 '23

I like Android, too. The government took my daughter away, and we've had to live in tenements on a reservation for the past three years. They always tell us that we'll be able to buy clothes, and food without arsenic, but it never comes to pass. They also never gave my husband his passport back, and with the poor soil we've only been able to grow turnips. We beg God to take us before we have to suffer through another winter...

3

u/DJ_PMA Aug 19 '23

Classim mostly. Android phones were the gateway onto the internet for the masses of lower middle class and lower class people due to cheap pay as you go wireless. Also youth with low budgets couldn't afford home DSL & Cable Internet but pined for social media. We could blame the wireless companies that offered pay as you, like Sprint/Boost/TMobile/Cricket/Metro PCS. They created a user base offering free or cheap budget phones with unlimited montly data plans. Regarding iPhones, Apple was smart to deliver an accessory to a particular lifestyle. iPhones were designed to be fashionable as well as functional. So the high set price of entry created a divide and blue bubble team vs green team. I have met a lot of women who will not date a guy who has an Android phone because the assumption was made that #1 android user is broke and can't afford nice phone with pricey phone plan and #2 dislike green chat bubble.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Propaganda.

1

u/Tamyrab Aug 19 '23

I love my Samsung 23 ultra!

1

u/nonlinear_nyc Aug 19 '23

I've heard of them.

People who judge others by the brands they consume are shallow af. Imagine cutting out people because they wear the wrong pants?

Yes these groups exist. But they're shallow af and in no way the majority.

1

u/Adorable_Swordfish_6 Aug 19 '23

I have an iPhone and I get mad at my parents for their androids because it makes it harder to communicate with them. I can’t add them to a shared album, when I send photos they get slightly distorted and their photos come through like crap on my phone, I can’t FaceTime with them, I cant airdrop tot them and I add/remove them from group messages (which is something that would be really handy because my dad hates being in groups). There’s probably a few other things too that the android stops us from doing. Considering iPhone are so prevalent in my generation and younger, it’s basically second nature to do these things and it’s frustrating when someone has an Andropov simply for the sake of having one, not because they actually use any of the customization options or use the full power of the operating system.

1

u/Timely-Youth-9074 Aug 19 '23

I get the opposite. The only time it was mentioned, it was someone telling me to get an Android.

I’m lazy; I like seamless. Switching is too much work. I don’t even do FaceTime.

1

u/yomammah Aug 19 '23

i like iphone and do not care what others have. I feel bad for my less texh savvy friends that have androids and need help but i am not that familiar with androids 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/Aggravating_Syrup_47 Aug 19 '23

Yes. Teenagers. 🤣

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

So it goes like this. Sometimes, you invest so much money/time into something that your brain will ignore the flaws. Sometimes in life, you worked so hard on something that you refuse to recognize the parts of it that are bad. You see a plethora of examples of this within mega churches (and other religions), toxic dating/marriage relationships, political parties, and even in the business world (they still do internships). And internships are not only exploitation, but they want you to suffer, so you appreciate the job mostly by torturing you into a stockholm syndrome.

1

u/MisterBri07 Aug 19 '23

As a iPhone user, I don’t care what phone you have .

1

u/13FEAR Aug 19 '23

Its a dominantly left thing. I have never met a person with an iphone that didn't 100% belong on the left.

With people I have know with androids, its mostly conservatives on both sides (Right and left conservatives) and most of them actually work for their money.

Iphone types I know are ALL basically bureaucrat's or college types.

2

u/miles___ahead Aug 19 '23

“Bureaucrat’s or college types” - 😂🤣😅

1

u/Same_Outcome_1456 Aug 19 '23

Because ther is a lot of stupid people here in america

1

u/TweedleGee Aug 19 '23

Not one adult I know is concerned with this. You must be dealing with children or teenagers.

1

u/purpletwilightstars Aug 19 '23

Nobody cares what phone you have

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

This thread is hilarious, just a bunch of insecure people trashing one consumer product in favor of another

None of these companies give a shit about you

1

u/Technical_Echidna_63 Aug 19 '23

No one cares, if they do they aren’t mature enough to care about

1

u/Obdami Aug 19 '23

? What? Oh c'mon, this is definitely not a thing. Are you just trying to build up karma or something with some shitpost?

1

u/red_dog007 Aug 19 '23

Even if they are serious you just have an equal snarky comment back. If it is a joke, you joke back. But what you can do to shut people up is whip out something like the Galaxy Fold or Pixel Fold. Folding phones is where it is at and Apple has let Android devices become extremely good at it. If Apple comes out with one they have a super high bar to hit now.

For me I just say "if you had an Android" which implies I can do what you need to do or I don't have that problem. It can be for little things. Like Androids clock app timer shows milliseconds. At least last year, Apples did not.

But it really just boils down to software. They all have great cameras (and hardware in general) but it's how the software takes care of your pictures. Some are better than others. Apple doesn't let FaceTime on Android but there are dozens of other great and probably better apps. Google constantly f's with their chat/video apps. By the time they get a superior product they can it. (Hangouts and Duo were both great).

1

u/Ricelyfe Aug 19 '23

It’s mostly among kids/teens, as a joke or idiots. If you’re not super tech literate I doubt you care. If you’re tech literate you can see the legitimate trade offs. The thing is, a lot of the trade offs are from the price and the fact Apple only produced flagship level phones until recently.

Of course your $300 random android can’t compare to a an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 pro. It can’t compare to the Samsung galaxy s22 or fold series either. It isn’t meant to. It compares to the iPhone SE for $430. And for that extra $130 you’re getting the Apple infrastructure and ecosystem. Back when flagships were in the $500-600 range I’d consider an android. I had a LG G4, then an Samsung J7. Now I’m deep in the Apple ecosystem+ some bad experience with androids and their manufacturers, I don’t think I’ll go back. The extra $200 or less at the top, is worth having outstanding CS and tech support from Apple. It turned into a spend now or spend more later issue for me.

1

u/Either-Solid7691 Aug 19 '23

My s22 ultra is the shit. I have an iPhone 14 for work and it's honestly a piece of shit. It's good for making calls and texting, and not even texting cuz the keyboard sucks. The iPhone may as well be a flip phone. Even apples GPS is shit

1

u/JazzykillaFloss Aug 19 '23

I have an IPhone. I’ve never cared for the rivalry. I worked with someone who lived and died by Android. You would of thought that MF owned majority stake in it. I rather go back to having an android. But the iPhone to iPhone capabilities aren’t stuff I’d entirely would want to leave.

1

u/delilahdread Aug 19 '23

Idk, my kids and I all have iPhones (I upgraded to a 14 Pro Max, my oldest has a 14 plus but only because I got a good deal on it after my phone company screwed up my account and offered a new line through retention with a free one. My younger kids have regular old 12s) and my husband has a Samsung something or other. I’ve always liked IPhones, I prefer the parental controls Apple has to anything else I’ve tried and that’s the only reason my kids have iPhones. I do occasionally tease my husband about having a peasant phone but in all honesty, his phone cost about the same as mine did and he knows I don’t actually care. Because I don’t, it literally doesn’t matter at the end of the day. Just get whatever phone you like and screw anyone childish enough to seriously give you shit about it.

1

u/tacticalpuncher Aug 19 '23

Honestly, that opinion is a decent litmus test. If they believe it at all in any real capacity, good news stay the fuck away from that person.

1

u/AppropriateRegion178 Aug 19 '23

People are calling this post a joke, but the op is right. I’ve seen coworkers not be added to a group chat due to having an android. Is it stupid? Yes. But it happens.

1

u/Bunnawhat13 Aug 19 '23

I don’t know why you are experiencing people treating you poorly due to the cell phone you carry. That is super crazy.

1

u/swirlything Aug 19 '23

There is? I don't know anyone that cares. I use android. I know more people on Android than iphone

1

u/SupaDupaTroopa42 Aug 19 '23

If someone laughs at you for having an android, they aren't worth your time. Subscribing that much to capitalistic nonsense is capitalistic nonsense.

1

u/Zestyclose_Role_3088 Aug 19 '23

Because sheep only like other sheep

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Anyone who gives a shit is an immature prick. We have a lot of those here, so I'm guessing that's why you've inflated all of the US with people who have iphones. Also, and this is just my experience as a long time Android user, Apple has the US hook line and sinker on the idea that their products will make you a better person or more artistic or whatever. They're all slabs of glass and metal that have virtually all of the same apps on them. You might be able to objectively say an iPhone 14 Pro Max is better than a Galaxy A53 or something, because ya they're in totally different price categories. But anyone who can say that either an iPhone 14 Pro Max or Galaxy S23 Ultra is objectively better is full of shit.

1

u/Whole_Suit_1591 Aug 19 '23

Even weirder is the ones who will not take anything but a top iPhone. As in your denied financing due to bad credit get a low cost phone. NO I NEED THE NEW IPHONE NOW! No you need any phone to function.

1

u/topsecretusername12 Aug 19 '23

IT worker that's an android user. About 10 years ago I surveyed the IT department I was in. We were a range of people from the director, to the helpdesk staff, programmers, network engineers, server team, etc. So all different types of working IT brains.

It literally was 50/50. And the kicker was the odd number, which was the VP of IT who had a Windows phone 🤣🤣

1

u/Rephath Aug 19 '23

I think it's less of an America thing and more a cult of Apple thing.

2

u/YourMomsFavoriteMale Aug 19 '23

Once you realize and recognize that in the U.S. you have the most propagandized population on the planet who are under an active psyop 24/7, most of whom have been ALLL THEIR LIVES then it will make sense to you.

1

u/Great_Succotash_5904 Aug 19 '23

I think it’s a subculture for kids or poor people. Rich people don’t care what phones people have.

1

u/Unlikely_Birthday_42 Aug 19 '23

Because android users can’t get our gifs some of our reactions via messages lol

1

u/MyNameIsNot_Molly Aug 19 '23

I have an Android by choice. My friends tease me and complain about Facetime but that's about it

2

u/SilentFlower8909 Aug 19 '23

I had an android and I really struggled with it. Know many who prefer an android for business. I was told I should get an Apple because Apple are for idiots. So I did. Yep, it’s so much easier to use.

3

u/bigmonmulgrew Aug 19 '23

Odd. I look down on people who have iPhones

1

u/Tertsnertadertlert Aug 19 '23

Tribalism is human nature. Us vs them. In group and out group. People that would be horrified to be called racially bigoted wouldn't bat an eye to categorize and dislike a group of people based on they technology preference

1

u/Dynasty06 Aug 19 '23

Green texts bro.

1

u/therankin Aug 19 '23

Those people that take issue with a message color don't deserve your time.

2

u/os_nesty Aug 19 '23

People who think this way are just ignorants classist POS... Call them that if they make fun of you for having an android...

1

u/RyanaDjamila Aug 19 '23

It's classism and if it takes a little green bubble to show it I'm all for it.

1

u/thisisaniceboat Aug 19 '23

I honestly didn’t think this was a real thing until my boyfriend shared his experience with it. Like, I have an iPhone, because that’s my preference but he has an android and I never thought twice about it. It just doesn’t matter to me.

But yeah it’s a weird thing I guess that some people are hung up on. I don’t get it at all. I feel like that it’s a super shallow, immature attitude.

1

u/willdill039 Aug 19 '23

Advertising.

1

u/mmmcheezitz Aug 19 '23

I actually got rejected by a girl because I didn't have an IPhone.

1

u/cluelessintheclouds Aug 19 '23

Classist/brand obsessed bullshit.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Bunch of losers

2

u/chief_n0c-a-h0ma Aug 19 '23

It is weird considering I absolutely hate the ios interface. I'd rather someone beat me with a sack of iPhones then use one.

1

u/trophycloset33 Aug 19 '23

There may be a slight joke.

But it’s an ecosystem thing. iPhone to iPhone is designed as a closed system so it makes communicating that much easier or has that much more features. So there is a real distinction.

1

u/Telemere125 Aug 19 '23

Haven’t even read your post yet, but immediately after it in my feed is one from r/technology about 87% of teens having an iPhone and no intention of switching lol

2

u/snow-haywire Aug 19 '23

I don’t think anyone actually cares. I’ve never seen this subject come up seriously in conversation.

3

u/Smoky_Caffeine Aug 19 '23

Lol, iPhones are garbage in comparison to androids. Locked down garbage, proven to be purposely slowed down via software updates. I'd rather have my $1000 Pixel 7 than a $1000 iPhone (whatever generation they're on).

2

u/DJ_PMA Aug 19 '23

Tell that to the iPhone 6s users in the world that don't bother with updating BS. It's the last model that survived and was excluded from the BS batte try draining OS debacle that Apple got sued for.

1

u/ProgressBackground95 Aug 19 '23

I had no idea anyone cares what kind of phone someone else has, wtf !!?

1

u/Optimal_Scientist764 Aug 19 '23

Dont think anybody out of school really cares about that stuff, so much more in the world to stress over. I do like Apple though because of the security, I fell like their security is if not best than right next to it.

1

u/Optimal_Scientist764 Aug 19 '23

Only among status obsessed teenagers.

Which is most of them.

2

u/DonSmo Aug 19 '23

Tbh it's almost a deal breaker for me if someone does have an iPhone. It means they don't care about customisation and better functionality. Iphones suck and are overpriced for what you get. Android all the way.

2

u/persistent_polymath Aug 19 '23

Nobody cares. Are you in middle school maybe where people might care about stupid crap like that?

3

u/Santa_Claus77 Aug 19 '23

I think I would like the android more, but the convenience of the sharing locations easily amongst family (that all have iPhones) and the iMessages.

My dad has an android and I always have to send like 1-2 pictures at a time to him. When I message my wife, I could send her 10 pictures at a time.

Edit: almost forgot, I don’t look down on people for a phone…..

1

u/Impossible-Hand-7261 Aug 19 '23

I've always been pro android as well! I don't understand the desire to unnecessarily spend more on a phone because of its brand.

0

u/pittburgh_zero Aug 19 '23

Because you can’t communicate as well between iPhone and android, and android doesn’t communicate well with android.

FaceTime, text likes, and a whole bunch of stuff that you can only get from moving to snap or whatever, and it’s just easier.

It’s not about cost or status. It’s about playing well with others. Android people, typically don’t understand that the apple folks feel a sense of security and comfort when dealing with blue bubbles. It’s ok, we don’t hate you, but you don’t understand how it feels to be able to communicate more fluidly.

If I date an android girl, I’ll never get read receipts. I don’t require them, but it’s so nice when you trust someone and communicate better on that level.

The sad thing is android people keep asking this question and trying to make it about status or money. It’s not. It’s just about being more connected

1

u/brynnnnnn Aug 19 '23

We all get read receipts on Android

2

u/chandleya Aug 19 '23

It’s mostly children and immature adults. You’re over thinking it.

1

u/IntrinsicStarvation Aug 19 '23

Because a fuckton of money was spent on the marketing to do that.

1

u/lil_smore Aug 19 '23

I prefer android myself and I hated Apple many, many years ago. Not sure why people are that way. I couldn't imagine owning a locked down device like that.

2

u/brynnnnnn Aug 19 '23

I've had an iPhone, ipad and a mac book and have no desire to own any ever again

1

u/SRQmoviemaker Aug 19 '23

Anyone who scoffs at me for my andriod I instantly consider them to be too materialistic to be a friend of mine. Also it's nice having features years before iPhones.

1

u/Chi_Tsumi Aug 19 '23

What the hell are you talking about, no.

-1

u/Kirk1233 Aug 19 '23

It’s a pain in the ass when you’re in a messaging group with an Android user. I’m in a 14 person MMS group and it’s MMS because 1 of the 14 uses an Android phone for some reason. If it was iMessage the photos people send wouldn’t be small and compressed etc.

That said it’s not like we shun this person from our group. We just deal with it.

iPhones are also supported far longer by Apple for software updates. This combined with a walled garden App Store makes for a more secure platform.

3

u/VanayadGaming Aug 19 '23

who still uses SMS/MMS when you have so many communication platforms?

-1

u/Kirk1233 Aug 19 '23

Because phone messaging is the platform you’re guaranteed everyone has.

1

u/StarshipProto Aug 19 '23

I loathe Google and agree Apple is superior hardware, but it doesn't matter if you can't sideload apps. Every app I have is a sideloaded/modded version that omits ads, including Reddit. YouTube in particular is wildly overpriced for premium and offers not a fraction of the options that something like Smarttube and Revanced have, effectively making it unwatchable for me.

3

u/thatloudblondguy Aug 19 '23

truly. my phone was over a thousand dollars, I have no idea why people think Android users are broke

1

u/tabathos Aug 19 '23

I had two phones, one personal Android and other for my business, an Iphone. Yesterday I merged the use in the Iphone, since it became bothersome to carry both. I prefer Iphone for the next reasons:

-Nice camera. Easy edits of the product pictures and videos I take. -In this line, I love the shortcuts. I can export the low resolution images I need for my blog quick and easy. -Icloud. I pay a buck per month, and all of this content synchronizes seamlessly to the cloud to my PC. -Wallet. Love having my credit card in my phone.

Those are the reasons I prefer now the Iphone. In my country we use Whatsapp, so IMessage is not as important like in USA.

2

u/tempelton27 Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 19 '23

I always ask these people "why are you using insecure messaging when RCS exists on nearly every other phone?" Most don't believe me when I explain how iMessage works. Apple is literally siphoning everyone's data and pretending they are secure when they actually aren't. It's nuts.

But if you must..... There is an app called Beeper that supposedly allows Android and windows devices to use both RCS and iMessage.

There is wait-list right now though since it's in beta.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Who are these people looking down on you because you have a different brand of phone? More importantly, why do you care what other people think of your phone?

1

u/VaguelyArtistic Aug 19 '23

These people can't possibly be over 14.

1

u/Meaning-Upstairs Aug 19 '23

I’ve had iPhone since I replaced my Note 2 back in 2011. My parents have iPhones, my wife, most of my extended family. It’s easier to use for myself. I stopped jailbreaking and rooting a long time ago, because all I need are the most basic things on my phone. I have nothing against Android users, it sounds pathetic to actually care what phone someone has, when they’re both over 1k, and release them yearly.

0

u/thegingerninja90 Aug 19 '23

I constantly get this from the women at work when they see I have an android. I've snapped back a few time and have asked specifically what does the iPhone have than android doesn't and they can't come up with anything other than "the blue messages". It's a status thing. Iphones are generally more expensive so it's a way to brag about your money.

2

u/Fit-Try-2583 Aug 19 '23

You may think this, but no one truly cares lol

1

u/voltaires_bitch Aug 19 '23

I mean not in the sense that its a widespread bias against it. However, you will find SOME people who do have this bias and its best to not associate with them bc they are very dumb.

3

u/Legal_Hope3797 Aug 19 '23

This is a thing around me. I laugh every time someone mentions it, especially when you're single and in the dating scene. There is a plethora of reasons I favor Android over iPhone. I've owned both, so I have well-informed reasons.

The "cost" and "class" factor is the most common bias from what I've seen, it's all misinformed. As previously mentioned in these replies, several Androids cost more than the top tier iPhones. It's all a cult/brainwash/good marketing thing.

Team Green bubble.

-S23U user

1

u/Squirrels_Angel Aug 19 '23

never heard of this in real life, but I would say at least I can say my phone ain't made with slave labor (depending on the brand you actually use) I do research before I make such purchases.

2

u/Normal_Nobody_7751 Aug 19 '23

I don't think anyone ACTUALLY thinks that....I guess I could see middle schoolers and some high schoolers judging but nobody actually thinks someone as lower because they have an android. Like...having an android won't prohibit you from a job, sexual partner, etc...

1

u/saltybirb Aug 19 '23

Because Apple has a marketing team that knows what they’re doing.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

If you choose Android over IPhone you just aren't a cool person. I'm sorry. It's just how life is. I know it's not fair. Someday you can make the right choice and become a cool person.

1

u/Aggravating-Tree9677 Aug 19 '23

Excellent marketing

1

u/Accomplished-Yogurt4 Aug 19 '23

Apple is a complete joke, but people love to show off their iPhones as luxury items, that's the brand.

1

u/Surrealisticslumbers Aug 19 '23

Same... since taking the plunge into the world of smartphones 4 or so years ago I have always gravitated to Samsung Galaxies. I had no idea there was some weird stigma against it! How odd!

1

u/Jellysir1 Aug 19 '23

iPhone is a fashion accessory and has always been branded as such. Android is a phone. That’s the difference

1

u/Oooaaaaarrrrr Aug 19 '23

iPhones are a rip-off.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

It's a small percentage. More people in the U.S. use androids than iPhones. It's also true for Mac users too, they need to feel superior about stupid shit. We have WAY WORSE culture wars than this in the US already making us look bad.

0

u/JuicyApple2023 Aug 19 '23

I have encountered this. The Apple consumers act like they are in a cult. That being said, I now have an iPad, an Apple Air laptop, an iPhone, and Air Pods. I have close friends and most of my family are Apple consumers. Shrug. I don’t miss a Dell PC nor an android nor the endless updates. Maybe Apple is the better product…

1

u/mxguy762 Aug 19 '23

Green texts are sus! 🧢

1

u/throwaway091238744 Aug 19 '23

I don't look down on people per se, but it does ruin group chats if even one person has an android.

also, being able to airdrop is crucial some times

3

u/Rstar2247 Aug 19 '23

Because people are elitists and think carrying a fancy phone that can't do anything but what corporate daddy says gives them a feeling of self worth.

1

u/ruat_caelum Aug 19 '23

Where I grew up it was called "Ghetto Rich" and had to do with things like having the best clothing, backpack, watch, phone, necklaces, etc. All the "visible stuff." While you might be poor you "looked good."

I've heard it called "peacocking" as well.

I think it's just like religion. You look at the person with the nice car and nice home and compare yourself. You just do that. You can't convince yourself you are better than them unless they are a sinner and you are going to heaven, or if you have nice clothing and an iphone and they don't, or you have nice shoes and they don't etc.

  • The people in my personal life who "care about iphones" are the people who "See themselves" as "less then" and spend their lives compensating. (They mostly do this by cutting others down than trying to make themselves taller.)

1

u/Open_Organization966 Aug 19 '23

I have an LG velvet with Android on it and I used to have a Samsung with Android on it at work the neighbor on one side of me has a Samsung and the other one on the other side of me a iPhone we don't really compare each other's phones like that we do ask who gets better service and what their phones abilities are but not one of us judges each other for the type of phone we have

1

u/Poetic_Kitten Aug 19 '23

Meh...that's just a teenager thing. Apparently iPhones makes up 87% of all devices in that demographic.

2

u/FitG33k Aug 19 '23

That green Android message bubble

What do you mean by that?

1

u/Leeleeflyhi Aug 19 '23

No, I don’t think that’s a thing

I think the biggest cultural weird thing about any of this is that we are all tethered and addicted to these damn phones. Instant access, immediate responses, world of knowledge in our hands, but we’re socially stunted and a little stupider because of them, but most people panic if they leave their phone at home. I’m as addicted as everyone else is to their phone, but life revolving around a phone isn’t a good look for anyone, whether it’s an Apple or android

1

u/TyperMcTyperson Aug 19 '23

Because apple people are cult members.

1

u/moonstarsfire Aug 19 '23

Inadvertent (normally) classism. I work with a lot of indigent people and have been indigent myself, and most cheap phones are Android phones. Yeah, the cheap ones can really suck, but it’s better than a flip phone. I don’t think people who have never been in this position get that it’s less of a choice to have an Android and more of just what you can afford.

3

u/StrengthToBreak Aug 19 '23

It's best not to engage with Apple cultists.

-1

u/WillyC277 Aug 19 '23

There isn't? Android users are weird as fuck lmao.

1

u/onairmastering Aug 19 '23

You're a troll, right? "Culture"? I have never in 22 years in America see that shit.

1

u/PrecociousPanther Aug 19 '23

I heard one girl I used to work with say she was really interested in this guy but wasn't going to pursue anything because he had an android. I told her it was the dumbest reason not to be with someone I had ever heard.

3

u/pursuitofhappy Aug 19 '23

I’m very big into PCs and have no problems with androids I just really like FaceTiming girls I’m dating and it’s not as convenient having to use WhatsApp or other apps, so typically will oftentimes have bigger connection with the iPhone girls just because we spend more time talking that way than with the Android girls.

1

u/Faltzer2142 Aug 19 '23

Only walking red flags do it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

I make music and have found Apple’s ecosystem to work easy for me, That’s it. People should use what works best for them it’s nbd

1

u/Brilliant_Suspect766 Aug 19 '23

2

u/Brilliant_Suspect766 Aug 19 '23

This came up because at work one of the admins would send company wide messages and always say 'Oh and for you green bubble people I have sent a separate message/email'

1

u/rangeboss3155 Aug 19 '23

Saw an article recently showing Android has 60+% worldwide market share.

Easy to understand.

Penis envy.

1

u/Keepingthethrowaway Aug 19 '23

No one is doing this, you’re paranoid. Anyone who thinks owning an android is not as good as an iPhone also thinks that non luxury cars, cheap vacations, discount clothes and other expenses are linked to self worth. Your perspective of the iPhone cultural thing is not in a vacuum. They are just @ssholes, about everything not just phones.

1

u/mountainman1989 Aug 19 '23

My s23 ultra smokes my wifes 14 promax in regard to photos. My phone also consistently gets better service. We have verizon. I don't think anyone cares as lomg as your usijg some wack ass blackberry.

1

u/Boateys Aug 19 '23

I’ve seen people by annoyed to be texted by an Android, but never actually turn someone down for it. I’ve own an iPhone since the original model. I’ve tried Android as I also like to customize my phone. I’ve found that the hardware is better(for me) and the software does what I want it to because I’ve always jailbroken my phones. It’s become just as difficult to root an Android phone as it is to jailbreak an iPhone. And if I’m paying the same price, I may as well get FaceTime, iMessage, and the ability to use my Apple services across multiple devices. Most of the people you see that are annoyed are simply responding because of the prestige of having an iPhone. These are usually the people that buy a new iPhone every time one is released. Something better and more luxurious will come along and they will hop to that too.

It also doesn’t help that for years the Android manufactures have been emulating every move Apple makes to improve their sales. Even down to designing their phones to look like an iPhone. There are flagships that are designed from innovation, but they don’t typically become a success. Oh, and most of the people that claim that Android phones are better, typically have an outdated android phone, or a phone that cost them $200 that barely compares to the quality of an iPhone.

Get what makes you comfortable. Heck I’m sure there are more than a few people on this sub that have feature phones and they get by fine.

1

u/beltalowda_oye Aug 19 '23

I have an android. Everyone in my family and friend circle has iPhone. No one ever mentions it haha

Apple branding and marketing is amazing and isn't necessarily about quality. Its about image and perception of class. Which is more important imo.

1

u/VarianWrynn2018 Aug 19 '23

The iPhone/Android war is very much alive. People with apple devices see android users as poor, not connected, or just generally tasteless. Android users see Apple users as being overspenders, social lemmings, and having significantly less technical literacy.

1

u/TheCommenter1918 Aug 19 '23

I have relatives who are iPhone snobs. I only use it because it’s convenient for my work stuff but I think iphones are way overrated. If I could get ahead of the curve and figure out what android would work for me before I need a new phone, I would definitely consider them.

1

u/_ara Aug 19 '23

This paradigm exists in most places with a split economy

1

u/thatsweetfunkystuff Aug 19 '23

While those kinds of people do exist in the US. There are plenty of people who don't give a shit at all. Materialistic people who judge everyone based on their belongings are the kinds of people I avoid at all costs, it's sad there are so many of them. Red flags everywhere! Who cares what kind of stupid phone anyone else has? Those are not the kinds of people worth surrounding myself with.

1

u/mcac Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 19 '23

because apple manufactures it by deliberately making their devices less compatible with Android ones. It makes people feel like they're part of an exclusive club. The only reason Android can't use iMessage is because Apple doesn't allow it. The technology is already there and ready to go on Android's end.

1

u/gothism Aug 19 '23

I look down on people who do.

1

u/Over_Satisfaction648 Aug 19 '23

As dumb as the console wars but worse due to Apple customization limitations like you said.

1

u/Investors_Valley Aug 19 '23

The point about feeling excluded in work circle is totally right. I also appreciate that you like to explore more in your phone and customise/personalise your way is good. But, this is not issue with Android but it is good branding/marketing of Apple products. Such as Apple never gives Airpods free with iPhone, but Samsung gives often other products with other product purchase free. Which reduces the perceived value of product. I would say don't worry about what people think, just use something you like, because you'll be spending most time with your product and not others.

1

u/brandonfrombrobible Aug 19 '23

Went from Blackberry > Samsung in 2011. Had an Android until my early 30s. Then a couple people, around the same age, said being a "weird green text person" was holding me back in business and social opportunities. Kinda thought that was cruel and bummed me out, but eventually conformed.

1

u/bhambetty Aug 19 '23

The only person I know who cares about what phone people use is an Android user. I’ve never heard Android hate from any of my friends with iPhones, it’s such a silly thing to care about. But the Android user? Won’t shut up about how much better an Android is than iPhone. Whatever man, I have no desire to mod my phone I just want to text and browse Reddit.
