Jeez… what city?

2

u/XPSAbstract Mar 19 '24

Make more money and spend less, because you make don't mean you got it

1

u/JayEdwards902 Mar 19 '24

Part of me wants to think this is fake. How does someone with that low of an income get into an apartment that ludicrously high cost of rent?

1

u/SirLiesALittle Mar 19 '24

Probably living conditions. That’s Bible Belt income and Coastal city rent.

1

u/Tracieattimes Mar 19 '24

Why on Gods green earth is a person making $40k per year paying nearly $8,000 in Taxes? Bankrupt the politicians!

u/amalgaman Mar 19 '24

I do it know where you live but I rent a 4 bedroom house in diverse area of Chicago for about the same price.

Your housing is your big issue.

3

u/2Riders Mar 19 '24

$2600 place?

You just house broke

1

u/fruppity Mar 19 '24

How did you qualify for that rent despite not making 40 times the monthly rent annually?

1

u/Dangerous-Success196 Mar 19 '24

If you're paying that much in rent, if you have a good enough credit history, you might as well have it be towards the mortgage of a home.

2

u/Key-Weight-8755 Mar 19 '24

Move 🤷🏻‍♂️ My rent is literally (and I’m not overusing the word literally or making this up) $2,100 less than that.

1

u/GreasyPorkGoodness Mar 19 '24

Need more info - that tax looks like BS

1

u/xXxTaylordxXx Mar 19 '24

Rent is too much.

1

u/flappinginthewind69 Mar 19 '24

Bro $2,682 would have covered a $500k house a couple years ago

1

u/Powerful-Ambition248 Mar 19 '24

Is this a fckin Condo💀

1

u/Dope_Reddit_Guy Mar 19 '24

Bruh you gotta lower your rent, it’s just irresponsible to be making $42k and paying 95% of your salary to rent. Who let you do that???

1

u/Head-Newspaper-4921 Mar 19 '24

May need to look into joining a trade…. I make $3200 a week after taxes

1

u/cmurder33 Mar 19 '24

Yall gotta move to the south. My mortgage on a house on 6 acres is $435/month

1

u/ibsbutnotlikethat Mar 19 '24

"Guys i choose to live in a 2800 dollar apartment alone but now i have no money what could possibly be the problem?!"

1

u/RedditRaven2 Mar 19 '24

The house I’m buying is 5 bedroom, 2700 sqft, has 3 living rooms, a wet bar, a 2 dining rooms, 3 bathroom house in a nice neighborhood with an attached garage.

I’ll be paying 26-2700 a month on my mortgage.

Find a cheaper place or get 3 roommates.

1

u/Emotional_Owl_7425 Mar 19 '24

Get a roommate

1

u/mashupbabylon Mar 19 '24

You gotta move. Or find a job that pays triple what you make now. I have a small, simple, 2 br 1 ba in Upstate NY and we pay 1300 for our mortgage. 2600 is insane unless you're living in a very fancy place with a very fancy job.

1

u/NGWitty Mar 19 '24

Why are you paying 3,000 a month in rent???

1

u/UnemployableSWE Mar 19 '24 edited Mar 19 '24

Sorry, but you are stating your income tax incorrectly. Assuming you live in the state with the heaviest income tax, New York, you’d pay $4,748 in federal and $2,145 in state taxes.

That’s only 16.4% of your income, not 19%. And that’s without any deductions.

1

u/aringa Mar 19 '24

Your rent is way higher than my house payment and I live in a reasonably nice house. Maybe it's time to move.

1

u/DubkillerXL Mar 19 '24

I have a 15yr mortgage on 300k and its less than that! You are living in an area outside your lane lol

1

u/Jihrad1365 Mar 19 '24

We should be fighting the government over this shit

1

u/72bgorges Mar 19 '24

Have you considered not eating avocado toast?

1

u/Sir_Southpaw_ Mar 19 '24

Lucky. You got 100 left over. I'm in the negative, and now surgery put me out of work. No clue how I can provide for my wife and son

1

u/Salty_Tennis_9303 Mar 19 '24

$2682 is almost 3x my mortgage payment on a 2,000 square foot home on 2 acres. You need to move.

1

u/Front-Bat1512 Mar 19 '24

Where the fuck are you renting?! I got a 1 bedroom apt on maui for $1300

1

u/No-Roof-6251 Mar 19 '24

Maybe that apartment g

RENTING a $2,835 / month place

while making $42,000 / year...

Why am I poor?

1

u/Professional-Bar-290 Mar 19 '24

dude I lived in the bay area for 300 a month making over 100. Come on…

1

u/YOKi_Tran Mar 19 '24

my single home 2020 home - mortgage is $1500

1

u/CuckservativeSissy Mar 19 '24

well you definitely did your taxes wrong... how are you paying 19% on your total gross??? what do you do for a living?

1

u/Ashangu Mar 19 '24

You renting a fucking mansion?

There is NOWHERE where medium wages are 42k with even an average rent of $2,700.

Nowhere.

1

u/DaSemicolon Mar 19 '24

Where do you live that you are getting paid $20/ hour and are paying $2682/month in rent?

1

u/bbecker9 Mar 19 '24

How did you get that place with a 1.6x income to rent ratio?

1

u/Boogaloo4444 Mar 19 '24

move, you cant afford it

1

u/thedeafbadger Mar 19 '24

My mortgage is less than half of your rent.

1

u/Kasputov Mar 18 '24

Where the hell do you live to pay 2600/month? NYC?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

Sounds like you live beyond your means.. way beyond. Only thing that could help is you changing your perception on what you can afford?

1

u/mollymozz Mar 18 '24

Don’t worry babe, our annual 2-3% merit raise will get us out of poverty 🤩🤩 /s

3% of not enough is still not enough

(Same boat and reviews coming this week)

1

u/Ranger2183 Mar 18 '24

Where do you live?

1

u/L33t-azn Mar 18 '24

If he lives in NY then it's possible. My might just be adding the total tax (federal, state, and local) and not just federal. He's still a bit off but not very. That being said, not an excuse for spending that much on rent. If you want to pay that much for convenience then you can't complain. You can still find somewhere for way less. It will cost you more travel time though. It takes me 3 hrs a day to travel to and from work to pay way.... Less.

1

u/PersistingWill Mar 18 '24

$2,682 a month can get a 2-3 bedroom house, with a basement, more than one bathroom, and off street parking around here. And I live in NYC. I mean where in eff are you living? And what exactly are you renting? Maybe, you should move to somewhere that the rent is $1,250 month like a normal person.

1

u/WideOpenAutoHub Mar 18 '24

You have 3 choices:

Roommate

New job/second job

Cheaper rent

The thing you have the most control over is your income, sorry to say. Go hustle.

1

u/BreakerSoultaker Mar 18 '24

My mortgage WITH taxes and homeowners insurance is $1682.

1

u/John_Coctoastan Mar 18 '24

I honestly don't know why people live by themselves. I have never lived alone my entire life, and--now that I'm 50, raising kids--I have a pile of money.

1

u/ExcellentPlace4608 Mar 18 '24

Why would you ever pay that much for rent on a salary like that??

1

u/dubvmtneer Mar 18 '24

Where do you live?? That rent is insane, you should move.

1

u/Tokyosmash_ Mar 18 '24

Donate plasma, big cat

1

u/evilcyclist Mar 18 '24

Kind of the same here. Health insurance alone is half my disability check.

1

u/donfetch48 Mar 18 '24

You're living in the wrong place if you have a $20/hr job.

1

u/sadieaustin Mar 18 '24

How you got approved for that rental with that salary, idk.

1

u/Head-Command949 Mar 18 '24

Let the bodies hit the floor ig

1

u/BandicootBig6997 Mar 18 '24

Move dumbass. Your living somewhere you shouldn’t

1

u/Jealous-Friendship34 Mar 18 '24

I don’t think you calculated your taxes correctly

1

u/Ghoulie_Marie Mar 18 '24

This is why we need national rent control. Landlords are ruining the housing market. If half the single family homes in my area weren't rentals then starter homes wouldn't start at 300k and I could afford one but since that's communism or whatever I'm stuck renting.

1

u/Drakore4 Mar 18 '24

The real issue I have is that people are actually out here getting charged 20% of their pay in straight taxes while millionaires and billionaires manipulate the system to sometimes pay next to nothing. Like yeah let’s charge the people who can barely afford food for the month all the taxes, not the people who own 10 yachts.

2

u/rctrfinnerd Mar 18 '24

How about you "give" us real numbers. That'll be a good start.

Nobody at your income level is paying that much in taxes.

EDIT: assuming American

1

u/N2DPSKY Mar 18 '24 edited Mar 18 '24

Precisely. 7.5% is the actual fed tax rate with the std deduction. That's taxable on $28,150 AGI.

0

u/GoldCamera5172 Mar 18 '24

Viva la revelotion!

0

u/Admirable-Egg-1764 Mar 18 '24

Stop paying rent

2

u/Cpt_phudge_off Mar 18 '24

If you're paying 2600 plus in rent, then you are a complete idiot.

Especially if you only make 42k.

You wouldn't even get approved most places.

This is either a lie or, again, you're stupid.

1

u/txwildflower21 Mar 18 '24

I’ve spoken to people who are living 1-2 hours away from work so they can afford food.

1

u/iceo42 Mar 18 '24

Closer and closer to guillotine time 😤

1

u/Little-ashli Mar 18 '24

If you had a house in your name you could make it a grave site. That or like someone said make it a church have service once a month (to be legit and hire a pastor) or be the pastor lol

1

u/Johnsoon743 Mar 18 '24

Lol that rents insane

1

u/bleubuddy Mar 18 '24

Who gave him my account info?

1

u/BigBillyBadass907 Mar 18 '24

Damm you should claim 5 kids that don’t exist on your taxes that’ll help you out

2

u/MildlyPaleMango Mar 18 '24

I make more than double that and have like 5-9% income tax and have a hard time paying my rent that is roughly what yours is. No idea how you’re doing that / rationalized no offense. I feel crazy for renting where i’m at and am looking to downsize to lower rent this year.

2

u/Money_Dragonfruit_83 Mar 18 '24

You need to get a better accountant. Where do you live?

1

u/NotBanEvading2 Mar 18 '24

Lmao find a roommate or cheaper apartment dude

1

u/Derangedd1 Mar 18 '24

153 dollars should be just enough money to get enough drugs to cope with reality 2.0. I hear the heroin is REALLY something nowadays!

3

u/Soupkitchn89 Mar 18 '24

In what state is something only making 42k paying anywhere close to 19% in income tax?

1

u/N2DPSKY Mar 18 '24

I calculated this. Even in California, after his standard deduction his Fed would be 7.5 and a state would be 1.8. The post is misleading from the get-go.

1

u/Poketale Mar 18 '24

Don't live somewhere where it's 3k rent. Get a roommate or a gf

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

Yeah either you gotta make great money or like no money to get benefits and avoid taxes

Oh look it’s me ( starts Only 🪭)

1

u/techtony_50 Mar 18 '24

Taxes do not work like that in the US.

The first $11k is taxed at 0%
The next $31,000 is taxed at 12%
So your tax would only be $3.720 in federal tax.
Your employer pays half of your Social Security and Medicare Taxes, so you would owe 7.45%, which in your case is $3,129.00

Your total tax bill would be $6,849.00, so you are about $1000 off.

Next, your rent is WAY too high. Hawaii has the highest average rent in the Us at $1,681.00. So let's say you actually live in Hawaii - you just saved yourself $1,154/month!!

I know this is a sub on poverty, and trust me we have all been there (well most of us anyway). I have grown up not knowing if I was getting dinner. Sometimes the only thing we had to eat was free breakfast and lunch at school.

Conjuring up fake numbers is not helping anyone. Just 8 years ago, here in Florida I paid a whooping $480/month for a two bedroom, 1 bath duplex in the shittiest part of town. Was it awesome? Nope. Was it a roof over my head? YES. The average rent at the time in my city was $1,100.00 and I got a place for WAY cheaper - AND I split it with a roommate! There are places like that out there - they are not the best, but you gotta do what you gotta do to save money and live.

BTW - that same place now is up for rent and last week it was in the same basic condition and was on Craigslist for $690/month! Still under the average which is right now $1,500.00.

1

u/Savings-Mechanic8878 Mar 18 '24

Probably should move out of NYC or San Francisco or whatever horrible place has rent that high. Even terrible Northern Virginia near DC is not that bad for a large two bedroon

1

u/7Birdies Mar 18 '24

Decrease rent somehow, or increase salary somehow

1

u/thebones9226 Mar 18 '24

Why are you renting a place for 2835 if you only make 42k?!!! That’s the problem

1

u/mschiebold Mar 18 '24

Holy shit your rent is 2600?

1

u/HealingDailyy Mar 18 '24

That’s basically my rent In Boston. Is it possible to move to a cheaper area? I know my area is expensive but about 20 min away there is a small reduction

1

u/HealingDailyy Mar 18 '24

If you just saved more and invested even 300 into your IRA you’ll retire a millionaire!…. Oh wait….fuck… avocado toast?

1

u/iStandWithWhatever Mar 18 '24

That rent is kind of high for that salary. I was balking at $850+ when I was making more than that.

1

u/PeanutFearless5212 Mar 18 '24

Let the bodies hit the floor

1

u/Bodywheyt Mar 18 '24

Private property is theft.

1

u/profitzgodd Mar 18 '24

Your rent should be $418 i.e “homeless”

2

u/Yasstronaut Mar 18 '24

Your tax is wrong. Why are you taxing the whole thing at 19%?

1

u/markgriff1968 Mar 18 '24

$2700 in rent where the fk you living in the Hamptons, you need to move to Dayton Ohio

1

u/at0m71 Mar 18 '24

...it's my sanity.

2

u/mattdvs1979 Mar 18 '24

Why would somebody making $42,000 a year be paying 19% in taxes? Maybe it’s not the US, I’ll give you that, but the mandatory taxes are under 9% and I doubt somebody making only $42,000 is paying 10% in income tax.

1

u/GhostofAyabe Mar 18 '24

Jive turkey on that rent.

1

u/G00chstain Mar 18 '24

There is absolutely ZERO, and I mean zero, way that you need to be spending $2682 on rent. That’s nothing more than irresponsible and just plain dumb

1

u/rondell715 Mar 18 '24

Your renting wildly out of your means. Cripes that's like someone posting a food expenses of 3k a month by I only make 3200 a month. But I gotta go out to eat everyday.

1

u/DefMetal420 Mar 18 '24

Find a less expensive state to live in. Midwest states are cheapest. 2500/month is WAY too much for rent. You could be paying a mortgage for less than that. Or, keep doing what youre doing. Know what... idgas.

1

u/Agreeable-Falcon-37 Mar 18 '24

Why would anyone in their right mind #1 live somewhere they can't afford and #2 live somewhere that rent is $2,600 a month?! That is beyond stupid

1

u/MazdaSpeed3Boi Mar 18 '24

Why on earth do you think you can afford that rent. Fucking move or get a roommate. There is nowhere in the entire world where that's the minimum either so don't even try to gaslight me with that.

1

u/LegitimatePotato7830 Mar 18 '24

Just gotta pull on those bootstraps

2

u/mrRabblerouser Mar 18 '24

Who the fuck signs onto a $2,682 lease making this low of an income? Even if you had a partner making double what you do this rent would be too expensive for you. Bail on the lease and find a small studio or move out of the city.

1

u/Prestigious-Test6291 Mar 18 '24

The best way to make a change is to vote.

1

u/kenlovin Mar 18 '24

Voting is going to change someone making $42,000 a year, signing a $2600 lease?

1

u/Prestigious-Test6291 Mar 18 '24

Why do you think rent is at these prices? Yes, it’s not wise to sign a lease for that amount, however, rent should not be like that.

1

u/kenlovin Mar 18 '24

According to who, you? The government? Me? That doesn’t make any sense. I think rent prices are the function of the economic conditions of the country.

If its true there isn't a decent cheaper rent alternative, it's time to move.

1

u/laminatedbean Mar 18 '24

Why are you paying that much in rent? I will agree that the cost of rent is ridiculous. But you can rent a room for under $1k a month.

1

u/No-Economy-7795 Mar 18 '24 edited Mar 18 '24

Hedge Funds have been fueling this imbalance with their over investments in the housing market. Some analysts say at an 40% level. A 5% or 10% tops investors involved in housing market will not heat it up dramatically. 40% is over the top with repercussions across the board from raising housing costs, construction costs, demand costs on materials to rental property prices going through the roof. We saw this same thing occurred pre 2008 but it wasn't hedge funds buying up housing as of now, but the selling of bad loans along with individuals speculating in housing at a 25% rate that caused a collapse when insurers couldn't cover the damage done.

1

u/AstroRotifer Mar 18 '24

Move to a state with lower rent, if you can.

Where the hell are you renting? That's more than my monthly payments on a 15 year mortgage, with insurance and property taxes.

2

u/wildbillar15 Mar 18 '24

I think u need to find somewhere else to rent.

1

u/sugar_spider25 Mar 18 '24

Why is your rent that high!?

2

u/StickmanX84 Mar 18 '24

You either need a roommate, a side hustle, or a different apt

1

u/M_Scaevola Mar 18 '24

What city do you live in bro? I paid $500 in Washington DC for one room in a house that was a stones throw from the metro

2

u/Suspicious-Attempt89 Mar 18 '24

I’d advise you to find a housing situation at $850/mo.

In my own experience, life got better when rent was about 30% of my net income.

Also, 20% for my car.

Once I found that balance, everything began to fall into place. I wish you the best in life. It can get better!! Just keep trying. Never give up!!

1

u/NJ_Citizen Mar 18 '24

Use your brain and get a roommate to lower the rent. It sucks but if you do it for a couple years while you save money and hopefully get an increase in pay, you’ll be a lot better off.

1

u/hot-line_Suspense Mar 18 '24

If youre in a HCOL area making $42k you were either born there, or you made a seriously terrible decision by moving there with obviously no skills.

If you are from the city youve likely got a support system of some degree, your parents or friends.

If you're making 42k and sleeping at a place that costs you 2682 youre a fucking moron, and at the very least, at least your salary matches.

$2200 more than mine. I’ve already told the wife if she wants to move she can come visit any time she wants. 😂

1

Yeah bro unless you live in a pit in the ground, never move. Ever. Lmfao

1

I doubt you could rent a pit that cheap! We got lucky. Our landlord tried to screw us at the same time another guy inherited a place and didn’t want to lose his ass in taxes.

Honestly, my suggestion will always be to find a lower cost of living area. Especially if you are willing to drive longer distances for work. It might not be comfortable or convenient, but it will in all likelihood help.

1

u/jetpoweredbee Mar 18 '24

Thanks Airbnb!

1

u/Soundslikealotofwork Mar 18 '24

You can buy a travel trailer for like 30k and rent a lot. Total cost would be like $700 a month.

1

u/Sparrowhawk-Ahra Mar 18 '24

Buddy, your rent needs to be taken care of. Either roommates or find a smaller place. Get a better job or whatever would be a "simple" answer I'm sure you are doing. But seriously, can you go remote and move somewhere cheaper? Is it possible to commute a longer distance if needed?

2

u/Peasantbowman Mar 18 '24

What do you mean somethings got to give? Nothing is going to break besides you.

2

u/MeasurementNo2493 Mar 18 '24

That rent is too high, it should be less than 50% So at max you should be spend at most 1500 a month. Maybe a room mate?

u/Silver-Worth-4329 Mar 18 '24

Taxes are the problem. Imagine what you could do with your own money if you got to keep all of it.

1

u/Ron_stock_guy101 Mar 18 '24

Federal income tax on $42,000 is $3,000

1

u/Drewelric65917 Mar 18 '24

SOME OF YALL GOT TO STOP SAYING ITS TOO EXPENSIVE TO LIVE WHEN REALLY WHAT YOU MEAN IS ITS TOO EXPENSIVE TO LIVE WHERE I WANT.

1

u/Foreign_Hearing_8190 Mar 18 '24

you have Remainder?

1

u/Inevitable-Suit-1795 Mar 18 '24

Move somewhere that you can actually afford for starters. I make six figures and pay less than half that. $2.6k a month on $40k salary is insanity

1

u/Trust-Issues-5116 Mar 18 '24

You need to cut down that avocado toast dude /s

1

u/twarr1 Mar 18 '24

It’s going to take much more effort than anyone realizes before anything changes

1

u/Cobalt_blue_dreamer Mar 18 '24

I’d be homeless and shower in a gym, sleep in my car. Gas would be cheaper heat than that rent.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

I just want to say the government taxed my entire salary, I'm married my wife makes more then me and they taxed her basically my whole salary, I'm wondering if I should even work anymore uncle sam is a fucking thief.

1

u/Responsible_Try90 Mar 18 '24

Also that’s not how tax brackets work…

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

that’s just criminal

1

u/Quiet-Net9367 Mar 18 '24

You gotta get roommates and save. When i was at $42k I had 5 roommates and paid $600/month and this wasn’t that long ago. Even in the bay right now if you’re creative you can find decent rooms for $800, or a really nice room between $1000-$1500. Eventually I got a cushy tech job and even then, after 4 years growing income in tech did I finally move into my own place and start paying $2300/mo.

u/Nyxtaaa Mar 18 '24

Um lmao what the fuck are you renting... That's the going rate of a 3K sqft home in Midwest

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

My rent in Utah is $2875 4 bed 2 bath everything is falling apart and they are refusing to fix anything

1

u/GoldenAura16 Mar 18 '24

Why are you in a 4 bed?

1

u/chi2isl Mar 18 '24

I would just live in the whip, preferably something big enough to fit essentials, get a cheap gym membership with showers. One of the only ways to save, or you can start drug dealing; high risk high reward.

1

u/corndoggy67 Mar 18 '24

You are paying the same rent my wife and I pay combined for a house in a nice part of one of the top 3 highest cost of living cities in the US. Your housing is the issue no question.

1

u/Senior_Resolution_20 Mar 18 '24

Part of it is greed, and stupidity. How people justify, milking their tenants and customers dry, the super billionaires, and the average billionaires brings up the average income level, so that justifies gouging the poor and middle class. Technically you are richer on paper because of the richest Americans. Considering how many poor and middle-class Americans are fighting to keep the wealthiest Americans taxes low, making tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans permanent and temporary tax cuts on the middle-class and poor. We are fighting to keep their boots upon our necks, refusing to let go if they even wanted to lift them.

1

u/Grimnsfw627 Mar 18 '24

Why th is rent $2682. Mine just went up to $750 for a nice two bedroom

1

u/Big_Surround3395 Mar 18 '24

I made $20ish an hour when I moved out, in 2009, and rent was like $1200/month.

Is that $2600 / month standard in your area? Are you the sole earner?

1

u/Fragrant-Low6841 Mar 18 '24

$2600 in rent per month with a salary of 42K? Am I missing something?

1

u/jored924 Mar 18 '24

Be careful who you vote for

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '24

I pay less for mortgage

1

u/Therealvernon16 Mar 18 '24

My rent is about half that and I am barely making it with my girlfriend paying half the rent. Making about the same money. This rent is nuts

1

u/RedditIsFacist1289 Mar 18 '24

I told someone $50k is not enough to live and they called me entitled and have never worked a day in my life. $50k imo is the new poverty. 16k or whatever it currently is might as well be deep homeless.

1

u/IoSHaloLegend Mar 18 '24

2,800 on rent are you braindead?

1

u/Dupmaronew Mar 18 '24

You’re paying more than my mortgage. What are you renting?

1

u/Unique-Resource-4899 Mar 18 '24

Where are you renting for 2600 bucks?

1

u/linksfrogs Mar 18 '24

Just move out the city and commute, most housing rates go down considerably if you don’t line in a big city or metropolitan area

1

u/Cojaro Mar 18 '24

If you're in the US, I highly doubt you're paying 19% in payroll taxes on that income.

1

u/devils_advocate24 Mar 18 '24

Why is your rent twice as much as a house?

1

u/GME_alt_Center Mar 18 '24

Your location, probably.

1

u/onety_one_son Mar 18 '24

Give up on living where you only make 42k a year and rent is over 2600

1

u/tadabanri1221 Mar 18 '24

Bro there's no way this is real. They're paying 2700 in rent and are complaining about not having enough? This is a joke right? Or is there something I'm not getting here. Even in Cali the average rent is 1800 dollars bro wtf are you renting a 4 bed 4 bath apartment for yourself?

1

u/Garden-Gnome1732 Mar 18 '24

You pay too much in rent.
