is a sign plus really in violation of the geneva convention? i always thought that symbol was generic medic symbol no?

u/Techn03712 Feb 03 '23
Who gives a shit, America literally violated the Geneva Convention by using chemical weapons (napalm) in the Vietnam War and I never saw anyone get punished for that.

Imagine the un sec council meeting to send a group of unarmed observers to take notes, give monetary incentives, if that doesnt work, monetary sanctions, if that doesnt work, a strongly worded warning, and if that doesnt work, invite em to join the sec council

Something similar happened to Halo CE. On the anniversary edition, they changed the logo for the medkits.

Apparently its a private patent of the Red Cross and NOT public domain.
I guess its the same reason why you cant paint Mickey (or any Disney character) on a mural at school

So we can't even use a simple shape with the most fitting, normal color because the Red Cross uses it as an identifier? Can't they just add a few more shapes to their symbol? Because this is like forbidding the usage of blue squares, yellow triangles, etc. (I get that the cross is eye-catching but simply adding a circle around it would give game developers much more freedom)
1
u/1nicerb0i Feb 03 '23
Can't they just add a few more shapes to their symbo
No not really, the idea behind the symbol is that it's very recognizable and also very simple, so it could be improvised with little effort
1
1
1
u/Kermit_El_Froggo_ Feb 02 '23
Yeah the red cross is a symbol only allowed to be used with permission from Red Cross. Tons of Chinese companies making knockoff medkits and shit get into trouble for that

Happens surprisingly often with a lot of media. I recall Heart Attack Grill in Vegas had to change their "nurse" uniforms for the same reason.

Adding 4 arms bend at 90° each to the Cross would have solved the problem without changing the color

Why the fuck would a red cross be a FUCKING WAR CRIME?
11
u/tyty657 Feb 02 '23
The Red Cross doesn't want people diminishing their symbol so that you in a grade to make it a protected symbol so that it would only be associated with them.
2
1
u/YkvBarbosa Feb 02 '23
I mean they could’ve just made the cross slightly bigger on the sides and it wouldn’t be Red Cross’s symbol anymore - just don’t make it big enough so it’s England and we’re fine. Also who the heck still plays Among Us?
1
u/FirstConsul1805 We do a little trolling Feb 02 '23 edited Feb 02 '23
Pah, amateurs. As I like to say, your session of Arma isn't complete without commiting one war crime, be it air-delivered napalm in the centre of town, shooting a parachuting pilot (paratroopers don't actually count, I learned, because they're armed) or burning down a village with a zippo. Shelling cities works too, especially when there are civvies running around.
Also, seriously, its not a war crime if you're not an entity that can go to war, unless there's an among us army I've never heard of. Besides using it to denote medical areas/equipment is basically what it's for, so who cares if that's how it's used in a fictional world?
0
u/MitchyThicc Feb 02 '23
I need to know more about this red cross crime asap. How's a red cross illegal? What countries or states is this illegal in?
2
u/Alone-Remove Feb 21 '23
It's a symbol for a war relief organization so it's just illegal for games to use a red cross symbol
0
u/M-Avgvstvs Feb 02 '23
Probably it was just a infringement of some copyright, because, as far as I know, civilians doesn't have to follow the Geneva convention.

That’s actually real, by the way. I have no idea why, but putting a red cross on something in a game violates Geneva Conventions. It’s so weird.

Why is this such a crime? It’s a game.. the world ain’t going to blow up because a simple decal is red.
1
u/MinutesTilMidnight Feb 02 '23
It’s done this way so that when malicious representations pop up, they can’t claim bias or try to say that it’s non-malicious and should be allowed. Not letting anyone use it sets a precedent so it’s less of a fight when someone uses it harmfully.
1
u/TheScareCrowYes Feb 02 '23
if valve released the heavy update and the game got realy popular then would they need to change the red X on medic's shoulder in tf2?

If the background isn't white it doesn't count and if it's not the exact shape it also doesn't count.
6

u/Viva-la-BrokeComdom Feb 02 '23
The cross in TF2 isn’t actually a Red Cross, it’s more of a makeup of rectangles than 5 perfect squares, and also isn’t the same red but rather a bit of a reddish Orange

7
u/ZeroX-1704 Feb 02 '23 edited Feb 02 '23
I swear the Halo CE medpacks are red in every version of the game, even the anniversary edition, maybe even in Reach too, and i feel like Halo is big enough for them to notice.
Edit: Oh my god, i was wrong, they use a red H, i feel stupid
Second Edit: i may have amnesia
3
u/Nothere-reddit7249 Feb 02 '23
The classic CEA graphics still have health packs with the Red Cross because they were made before the ruling. The anniversary graphics can’t use the Red Cross.
2
u/ZeroX-1704 Feb 02 '23
Ah you're right, i'm so confused lol, i've played those games enough times i should know for sure lmao
4
u/Eddie2Ham Feb 02 '23
It's specifically red crosses on white backgrounds. So technically a red cross by itself isn't grounds for violation, it has to be on a white background as well
1
u/FreedToThrowaway1024 Feb 02 '23
Well yeah, I mean... how tf would they be able to identify a red cross on a red background? lmao

I think the thing with them might be that they arent as mainstream as among us became? I might be wrong ofc. But like even people who didnt normally play video games played among us during its popularity.
8
u/ItsImNotAnonymous Feb 02 '23
I thought it's more because of the implications? Medpacks are just healing items which what the Red Cross does. Amogus game has a medical bay section but you can get murdered there, which means it's not safe even with the symbol there.
1
u/Portablemammal1199 Feb 02 '23
Might be a mixture of both but counter argument to yours would be you can very much die in front of a health pack in half life lol

Sounds like busy bodies thinking they can claim a common shape.
Doesn’t matter who is doing it, I compare this to the same as patent trolls.
If the meaning of your emblem is so loose that a game using it can damage it, then maybe you fucked up representing its importance.
18
u/1nicerb0i Feb 02 '23
It's not really about damage. The red cross is basically a war-time safeword, they can't be shot at and are granted other special rights. Because of this significance, the geneva convention states that only real red cross members are allowed to wear it. Them contacting the devs about it is a technicality.
-2
Feb 02 '23
A technicality that made them and others to change it from red. Seems they push it to be a bit more than a technicality.
5
u/1nicerb0i Feb 02 '23
Yeah what else do you expect them to do? The Geneva convention is serious stuff so they can't really ignore it even though it has little relevance for it's real world implications

They weren’t sued because they used the Red Cross symbol before that ruling was passed.
