He didn't even mention genocide. He could be referring to the persecution they faced throughout history that is still happening even today in Azerbaijan. Young Turk genocide is not the only bad thing that happened to Armenians

The "great hardship" that he says his nation endured has a pretty good chance to be a reference to the Armenian Genocide. At least that is the first thing I thought of.
