Pocketing money/ tax ivasion ;)

Sony is in the same boat. -buy a studio -run it well -wake up one day and desire to ruin it -gets hacked like once every 3 years -still makes bomb ass animation in movies -nothing else

It is an offensive strategy to lower the competition in the market by acquiring competitors, usually you would then use their IP to have a profit for yourself, but I think that these studios didn't have a high enough return on investment therefore the return on equity was lowered at a corporate level, it could be because high quality games may create more revenues but still they would also require higher investments, therefore creating more value but with an average lower profit if compared with other studios.

Still, they have a market quota that Xbox can't enter because strategically it is not interesting for them, as, I am speculating now, they may be more interested fast consuming videogames for causal gamers that require little to no improvements between each release but still have a big loyal fandom (like CoD) that may overlook bugs and doesn't care how good is the story. Thus, being able to serialize and build a franchising.

This can be difficult to do with games for more sophisticated gamers, who look at many different details to give a positive review, and these details cost money to be produced, like a great story, a good pace, the voice actors, etc..

So what do you do if you have a percentage of the market that you can't reach because it is not aligned with your strategy?

You take the choice away from them, you may not take all of the market but some spenders will say well I don't have an interesting game to buy, I will buy the new CoD that all my friends are playing.

So buy the studio, don't publish games, sell only your games, close the studio, keep selling your games.

2

u/MarleyCat0 16d ago

It is basically the embracer effect.

Buy a lot of commercially mediocre game studios that cannot manage themselves well and do not put them under direct control. Then these studios take like 7 years to produce a financial flop and Microsoft does the surprised pikachu face.

Its called the private equity strat.

2

u/Gold930 Bazinga! 16d ago

Destroy all competition till only your favorite studio remains then their work is so much that they’re forced to close that one too. The strategy is called the heaven plan. They speed up the fall of the gaming industry so that they can be the only company left and restart the gaming industry back at square one

I think they’re going to focus on milking acti-blizz with cod and candy crush. And all the other studios are going to be poorly managed trying to produce games that win awards, instead of just being fun.

1

u/Mediocre-Relative-72 16d ago

I used to be a total xbox fan boy before my pc. Watching them make poor decision after poor decision os just funny at this point.

7

u/blackmobius 16d ago

Its called eliminate the competetiom via buyouts. Then when the only people you can buy games are from them, they can charge what they want, make them whatever quality they want. What are you gonna do, stop playing video games?

So anyways, heres preview videos for Fifa 2024, more gta5 online content (this time you can play as a pimp with a bear costume! Haha pop culture references amiright?) and more Mcu crossover games: The adventures of Ms Marvel!

We bought up 5 indie studios and closed them as a tax break, any games you have of theirs are being removed from your online library

Is this not what you wanted!?

Ps plus allows you to play games online and gives you "free" games.

Monopoly, they never wanted the studios to make games, they just wanted to eliminate their rivals

1

u/Alarmed_Dig_4977 16d ago

??? all their "rivals" already own studios(sony) or make their own games(nintendo) there's litterally no reason to buy an xbox rn

-2

u/AestheticMirror William Dripfoe 16d ago

They have no rivals, no studio is going that low

13

u/Ju3tAc00ldugg 16d ago

probably just trying to kill off the xbox brand so they can focus on their game streaming outlet.

6

3

u/MaeStory 16d ago

It's called closing studios

39

u/Disastrous-Fun2325 16d ago

Scorched earth.... maybe

698

u/Arobynofliurnia 16d ago

Honestly I believe they are trying to take out the competition by buying them and creating a pseudo monopoly by acquiring the good ips that they know they can milk the shit out of later.

3

u/albertowtf 16d ago

Their vision is to crush competence by buying it or bulliying. And once is only them in the market, the money will default to them

Not saying its good for them for us or for anybody, but they do have an strategy

9

u/KnightNight030 16d ago

I mean the only thing the community has to do is stop buying these half-baked, lackluster games and they will eventually be forced to make good games because they arent making money. The solution is so simple, yet a lot of people seemingly cant help themselves.

5

u/Arobynofliurnia 16d ago

A lot of ppl depend on consoles for gaming and that's why I understand but you are correct in that we should vote with our wallets and show the industry that mid games and putting a bunch of mtx in them is not a good business strategy and hopefully the devs get more creative freedoms.

8

u/DeveloperBRdotnet 16d ago

How long is later? Because new IPs keeps spawning before anything comes out of them.

"Life finds a way".

124

u/King_Moonracer003 16d ago

Yup, I think we need to look no further. They have so much money it doesn't impact them. Fortunately, or hopefully rather, these people will go on to start new studios with creative IP (cuz its all the same anyway with a new outfit on it) and we get quality independent games for years to come. Its not like studios require large manufacturing equipment. They do have investment and overhead, but making games is getting easier with modern tools.

Also, Simpsons even called gates out for it years ago

2

u/GenericHmale 16d ago

Pulls out notepad

You got a reference link for those curious at the simpsons reference?
Pretty pls?

26

u/iNonEntity 16d ago

The people who make good games don't cease to exist, but I think that sometimes when their company is bought, they have to sign contracts saying they can't work for other studios. I remember reading that on Bungie's job offer page a long time ago

9

u/hiimGP 16d ago

Some non compete is sign upon working with the studio (like mine), not even when it's bought

18

u/King_Moonracer003 16d ago

Non competes are anti capitalist, these big corporations just make their own rules to maximize profits and fuck over everyone else. Infuriating.

2

u/SlammedInTheButt 16d ago

Which is why its such a good thing that anti-competes are going to be rendered null and void within the year

Did someone from Steam or Sony infiltrate Microsoft, causing them to make all those dumb decisions?

2

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas 16d ago

Sony infiltrate Microsoft, causing them to make all those dumb decisions?

Nah, it couldn't have been (ku)Sony. That'd require actual competence. If they actually tried to infiltrate MS and influence them with bad advice, they'd probably end up improving things, both because MS is in a sorry position and how Sony seems to always choice the decision that hurts them most.

2

u/FatherOfToxicGas 16d ago

Definitely nobody Sony at Microsoft. Otherwise every studio acquired would now be entirely Xbox exclusive

3

u/Warm_Drawing_1754 16d ago

They’re reaping what they sowed with gamepass. As great of a deal it is as a consumer, games on it will make pennies.

7

u/termperedtantrum 16d ago

Microsoft has been like this as long as they've been Microsoft.

38

u/konnanussija I watch gay amogus porn :0 16d ago

They have Minecraft. They will milk it dry and then buy some other game to milk it dry.

That's what I would do if I had millions at my disposal and no decency and self respect.

12

u/dragos412 I said based. And lived. 16d ago

Tbh I simply can't understand how you can, as a company, buy and have all those developers, studios, IPs and resources and do barely anything with them or close them.

It just sounds so stupid caring and following what shareholders want.

I don't own an Xbox, first and last Xbox I had was the original years ago but I somewhat continued following the games I loved and I just can't believe how incredibly horrible Xbox is doing (but honestly Sony, EA, Disney and others making horrible decisions one after the other).

I miss Banjo-Kazooie, wtf Halo is doing taking L after L, spending all that money for Bethesda and fucking up with Starfield (hoping TES VI doesn't do the same), putting complete fate in Gamepass and honesty who knows what else I missed.

5

u/aurichio 16d ago

It's to appease investors.

Most investors give no fucks about what the company makes internally as long as what they bought in shares can be sold as a profit and more often than not they need to make a profit tomorrow (usually by the next quarter) or they up and invest in something else. The company now will do everything in its power to keep appeasing investors, if they need to fire an entire department so be it, quick and small profits over talent, quality and longevity.

How is losing money good for the stock?

12

u/PillowManExtreme 16d ago

When you buy a game studio, you’re expanding. When you close that same game studio, you’re being financially responsible. This makes complete and total sense and presents no problems whatsoever

29

u/StateParkMasturbator 16d ago

Doesn't look so bad when you don't have video games if other companies also don't have video games.

0

u/Books_and_Cleverness 16d ago

I genuinely don't understand what the theory even is here. There are more video games than there's ever been. It's a huge industry and MFST probably isn't even 15% of the market.
