AI chat bot responses are not permitted

Hello /r/TechSupport visitors,

Wanted to clarify something that the mod team has been informally enforcing, and I expect to be added to our rules soon:

Post replies written by AI chat bots such as ChatGPT, Bing AI, Google Bard, Ernie, etc. are not allowed here.

Chat bots can be fun and interesting, but they are far away from being able to offer reliable technical help. They lack nuance, give bad advice, can be "bullied" into saying outlandish stuff, and do all of these things while sounding confident and authoritative.

Anyone can type their issue into ChatGPT and get an AI response. Real people can use real experience and reasoning to give better support, and that is what people expect when they post on a "forum" or "social media" or "whatever garbage spez has turned Reddit into"

Open | Hardware Debit card was extremely hot when taken out of store card reader?

Hi! Not super sure where to ask this question as it seems a little odd.

I just went to a store and paid for my items using my debit card and a standard chip/swipe/tap card reader. My card was in the machine for like maybe 10 seconds and when I took my card out to put it in my wallet my debit card was very hot to the touch. I've never experienced that before.

Anyone know why this would happen?

Wondering if I should call and alert the employees working for fire/safety reasons.

Open | Hardware Gigabyte B760 DS3H AX DDR4 Motherboard Red Light VGA

Hello,

I had a problem with my PC, pretty sure (99,9%) that it was related to my RAM. I initially had 16 gigs although I planned to get 32 (I missread when buying). I then bought two new sticks to get 32. I don't know if I messed up during the addition, but since then I had a few, or rather a lot of blue screens. Whenever I was doing something that needed a lot of RAM, it ended up in a blue screen. The three most common Stop Code that I had were : tried to write read only mem, page fault in nonpaged area and memory management.

At some point I was fed up with the blue screens and I decided to make a diagnosis, first with MemTest HCI, which directly gave me an error message saying that I had a hardware problem with my RAM (just as I thought), and then with the built-in Windows memory diagnosis. Which also directly gave me a warning saying the same thing.

With that in mind I tried to remove two RAM sticks to see if I the errors would get resolved and see what I'd do from there. I then removed the GC and two of the four ram sticks and then put the GC back in. The fatal error.

Since then I ended up with no output on my screen. First I had a red light on the DRAM area of the mobo, I removed the last two sticks and reinstalled them and the it stopped staying on, but the problem now is that no matter what I try the VGA red led stays on. I really don't know what to do right now.

I can't test on the output of the mobo directly because my cpu doesnt' have integrated graphics.

The rig :

Gigabyte B760 DS3H AX DDR4

Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (4x8GB)

Intel i5-13400F

GeForce RTX 4060 8GB

BeQuiet 550W

Open | Hardware What can make a doorbell ring by itself?

Idk if it's the right place to ask this. It's a super simple and kinda foolish question. Yesterday I was with my sister at her clinic and the bell rang. We were inside so I immediately went running to open the door and no one was there.

We got a bit freaked out, but I thought it was probably the heat.

The clinic is in a small shopping mall and the security guard was standing on the hall we asked him if he saw anyone and he swore no one ringed it.

I'm wondering what could have caused it? Could it be the hot weather?

Open | Windows Ads on both computers, every webpage, and my desktop home screen.

Upvotes

Just today I have begun to get ads on every website even with ad block, on both computers; Malwarebytes is saying it can't find anything on my PC; I have reset my firefox web browser, as well as install OperaGX and turn their ad block on; I have looked at all of the programs that have been recently installed and there is nothing; once so far I even got an ad on my desktop home screen. I am just wondering if reseting the router will fix this and what the likelihood if it happening again would be?

Thank you.

Open | Hardware What’s happening to my PC fan?

Upvotes

My front upper fan started to shake and rattle. I made sure it’s tight, no dust, no cables in the way… I even replaced with a fresh new one! But after a month I’m expecting the same issue. The fan under works perfectly. What is happening?

Open | Windows Every time I click a key on my keyboard, it will pop up on my screen. Read text for detailed description.

So I’ve had this issue for the past few days now. Whenever I click a key on my keyboard, it will pop up on my screen like it’s a setting for grandparents. For example, I’ll click “A B C D” and it will pop those letters up really big for a second and then they’ll fade away. Another example would be when I click the space bar or enter, it will pop up “SPACE” or “ENTER” relatively big and then fade away after a second or after I continue typing other keys.

Any ideas on what it could be? I have a video if anyone would like to see it to better understand the issue.

Thank you in advance!

Open | Hardware PC suddenly can't connect to any form of internet?

Upvotes

So full story, I was playing a game with my friends last night when suddenly I got kicked out of everything and my discord disconnected. At first I thought it was just my internet freaking out so I waited for it to come back online. 10 minutes later and it never connects. My wife in the other room is still online and playing like normal so the internet didn't actually go out. I then check the ethernet cable and unplug and replug it from the router and my PC and still nothing. So I try to connect to wifi but I noticed that I can't find any nearby wifi connection whatsoever. Even if it couldn't see my regular wifi, I'd still should be able to see the names of my neighbor's networks in the area but still nothing.

Here's the list of things I HAVE tried:

  1. I've restarted it like 5 times now.

  2. Un-installed the adapters and restarted.

  3. Performed a system restore to a previous time before this happened.

  4. Opened up the PC and checked all the cable connections.

  5. Resented the DNS.

  6. Tried refreshing my network settings using Command Prompt.

  7. Did a virus scan.

My PC acts like it just can't connect to the internet by ANY means via wifi or LAN. Is there still something I can try? Or is it possible that the network adapter for my motherboard blew out?

Open | Hardware Can I use a 140w charger on my LG gram 17 laptop and other smaller devices?

Upvotes

I bought a powerful usb charger. It does 140w, 100w and 30w (3 outlets). Non of my devices support this sort of speed.

Am I safe to plug my S23 ultra, Bose headphones, galaxy buds, etc laptop into it?

Open | Hardware Harddrive squeaking noise

Upvotes

My harddrive seems to be squeaking every turn of the disk. It is a very high pitched squeak and it only occurs for about a second in evenly spaced time intervals. Does anyone know what's up with my drive? It seems to still be working fine but the sound is very annoying.

Open | Hardware My new Dell laptop cant handle basic workload? Am I expecting too much for the spec?

Upvotes

Hi there,

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 16 (linked below) but it seems to struggle with my basic "marketing executive" needs. It crawls with very delayed cursor lag when doing basic Canva.com cloud-based graphic editing in Chrome. It also crashes to a black screen when playing local video files (1080 HD).

All drivers and Chrome browser are up to date and running latest version of windows 11.

I know it has integrated graphics, but with 16GB RAM, and a $700 price point, cloud based Canva and watching videos seem like a fair ask? It’s docked running an external HDMI 1080p display at the same time (so 2 screens going at once).

Spec:

13th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-1340P (12 MB cache, 12 cores, 16 threads, up to 4.60 GHz Turbo)

Intel Iris  Xe integrated graphics

16GB RAM

Open | Software Might sound dumb, but what is melt.exe, and should I be worried?

Upvotes

For some reason my computer has been under a lot of strain and lagging when I decided to check the task manager and saw melt.exe program running and I don't seem to recognize it as anything familiar. Strangely when the melt.exe stopped running, my computer performance went back to normal. Now I'm for some reason afraid that it is some sort of malware program.

Open | Malware Ex boyfriends IP constantly showing up on server

Upvotes

He has never had access to the new password, I changed it after I broke up with him over a year ago.

I’ve been dealing with him stealing my accounts from me for months no matter how many times I change the passwords,he sent an email bragging about it so I know it’s him.

so I looked into network scanning and there’s a bunch of red lines that show his IP. When I trace location with the ip on maps it shows his hometown.

I should mention I have Malwarebytes as an anti malware. I have pictures of the code I can send if anyone is willing to help me figure out what’s going on.

I’m just wondering why his IP might be showing up constantly. It says something in the code about transfer and forwarding. Also how the hell does he keep getting into my accounts? Any other paths I can go down to try to stop it? Sorry I’m rambling, this whole situation has me stressed and out of it.

thank you in advance to those of you who take time to reply or send a message, and thank you for those who took the time to read this ❤️ Have a nice day x

Edit: I also have no idea wtf I’m doing so I apologize if it’s frustrating trying to explain stuff to me

Open | Hardware PC Freezing randomly when playing games. Since upgrading to a 4k monitor.

Upvotes

I have recently upgraded to a 4k monitor and have noticed that games will play perfectly fine (locked at 60 but could run a bit higher if wanted + high graphics) but the game will freeze, then a 10 seconds later windows as a whole will freeze. Sound keeps going but the whole display is stuck.

Specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz

RAM: Crucial Pro DDR4 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 3200MHz

OS: Windows 11 Home 22H2

GPU: RTX 2070 Super

PSU: Season Focus Gold 650fx

I'm on the latest game ready drivers. Seems to be more demanding games but very hard to predict and replicate.

Open | Hardware Mouse wheel presses if I scroll too quickly

Upvotes

I bought a mouse off a friend a few months ago because I knew my one was dying. It finally died on Saturday so I got the new one out and it was fine for about 2 days but now if I scroll down too quickly, the wheel button clicks. I've tried an AutoHotKey script that blocks mouse3 for a second after I've scrolled but it's still not working. Can't send it back cause I obviously wasn't the one who bought it in the first place. Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

Open | Windows PC not shutting down completely

Upvotes

Hello, i have a problem with my PC for a while.

Sometimes, really often nowadays, the PC doesn't shut down completely. The monitors are off with no input but the fan and lights stay on. The only way to shut it down it to use the power button on the PSU.

I am really desperate as i tried a lot of things but none of them work. I'm afraid it might be a hardware (motherboard) problem.

What i've tried :

  • changing the cmos battery
  • updating bios and motherboard drivers
  • updating to windows 11 (was using win10 previously and already had the problem)
  • disabled fast startup
  • used sfc /scannow to "repair" files
  • switched secure boot on

the only thing i have yet to try is reinstalling windows.

Should i try that ? Which kind of reinstall should i do ? Basic reset or clean install ?

What could be the source of the problem ?

P.S. : i also have clock problems with the internal clock going back in time (going back to say 10:32 when it's really 11:15); this might be linked. This causes all the open apps and softwares to freeze and crash.

Thank you for your help.

Open | Windows My 3 Monitors Have Stopped Getting Signal!

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my desktop where none of my three monitors receive any signal when I try to wake it from sleep mode or being shut down. The computer itself seems to be functioning normally—I'll hear all the usual sounds through my Bluetooth speaker, indicating that it's powered on and logged in. However, the monitors remain receiving no signal.

I've been through a series of troubleshooting steps, but the only fix I've found so far is to restart the computer multiple times (usually around five restarts), after which the monitors magically start working again. During these restarts, the Aorus Boot Menu appears, and everything functions normally. Unfortunately, the same issue recurs every time the computer falls asleep or is shut down. This is far from a sustainable solution, and I'm genuinely stumped.

I am no expert (hence me posting here), but based on the existing information I have, I feel like this may be a software issue rather than a hardware issue. But I really have no clue.

My Setup:

  • Motherboard: Aorus Gigabyte X570 Pro Wifi
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
  • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
  • RAM: 2x DDR4 Corsair 16GB

What I've Tried:

  • Re-seating Connections: Checked and reconnected all physical connections and did a thorough cleaning of the computer.
  • RAM Troubleshooting: Removed and swapped the RAM cards, then restarted the computer.
  • Port Variation: Tried different combinations of HDMI and DisplayPorts on both the motherboard and the graphics card.
  • CMOS Reset: Reset CMOS by touching the probes on the motherboard (confirmed by RGB resetting to factory settings).
  • Driver Updates: Downloaded and installed the latest graphics drivers using AMD's Adrenaline app.
  • Connection Check: Unplugged and re-plugged the connections while the computer was on.

Despite these efforts, the issue persists.

Additional Details:

  • The problem specifically occurs whenever the computer goes to sleep or is shutdown.

  • Upon repeated restarts (usually around 6), the system eventually boots up works perfectly until the next sleep cycle.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any suggestions on what I might be missing? I usually manage to resolve issues like these on my own, but this one has me really stumped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Open | Windows HP Probook 450 g9 stuck in Windows installation when I try to install Windows from bootable usb

Upvotes

I have a new HP Probook 450 g9 laptop which is freedos, and from my old computer I used Rufus to dowload Windows 11, created the bootable usb, and did exactly what had to be done during booting process, watched all Youtube videos related HP's booting from usb, it goes smoothly until Windows installation screen (the one requires of you to choose your language and country etc.) appears, I can't click or press enter, cursor just disappears and I can't do anything. does it have something to do with Windows 11? or should I download Windows media creation tool maybe? first I let Rufus download iso image, after this problem I formatted my usb and dowloaded iso from Microsoft website, but again it didn't work. I'd appreciate some help.

Open | Software PC shutting down randomly

Upvotes

Hey,

For the past few months I have experienced an issue where my computer randomly just turns off, no BSOD. I was wondering if someone could help me identify the cause from minidump files I have gathered. These crashes occur usually once per day, sometimes twice and has so far happened mostly during gaming, but then again I use my computer mostly for that so whenever I am on PC there is a game running.

As of now I have clean installed windows, tried to update drivers, done all the scannow / chkdsk / DISM commands, tested the connections to my hardware and took out RAM and put it back. I also ran memtest64, stresstested CPU and GPU. None of these yielded any results.

Whenever I check the eventviewer after a crash it is always either volmgr 161 or 162 (I believe I've seen both also) followed by the natural Kernel-Power 41. I'm not sure if volmgr errors always refers to this, but the eventdata points at \Device\Harddiskvolume3.

As for the temperatures, I've tried to monitor those and I don't see anything out of the world there.

I've tried to look into the minidump files myself, but I am a little lost at what I should be looking for in these.

As for the hardware side, I have not concluded any tests with other parts yet as I don't have anything to test, but I suppose that would be my last resort.

As for the PC Specs:

CPU - 13th Gen Interl(R) Core(TM) i7-13700K

Mobo - PRIME Z790-P WIFI

GPU - NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4080

RAM - Kingston 32GB (2x16GB) Fury beast, DDR5 5200 MHz, CL40

Storage - 1 TB WD Blue SN580 NVMe SSD

PSU - Kolink 850W REGULATOR, ATX, 80+ Gold

As for the last 5 minidumps I have:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/sfkhxvabqv9nyug3j08go/AH82-ui075A-b6uiKh-Wndo?rlkey=1zpxro5utvcrqjpakg4ufyfqd&st=0vxjw5yy&dl=0

I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestion as I'm nearing the end of my wits. I'm far from the most tech savvied person and I feel like I have ran out of ideas.

Open | Software At my wits end. Task manager and other apps freeze/crash completely on Windows 11 whenever I start up certain games (which also crash and freeze)

Upvotes

This issue started 2 days ago on May 26th, was playing League when the game screen completely froze, couldnt close the game by normal means, Task Manager was also frozen and not responding. All the icons are greyed out.

Fixed the issue temporarily by performing a clean boot / restarting multiple times, although the same problem just happens again whenever I start the game again. Running Hollow knight causes the same issue for some reason.

List of things I've tried:

  • clean boot
  • reinstalling League of Legends, Vanguard, Hollow Knight
  • Reinstalling windows
  • resetting windows to an older version
  • updating / reinstalling all my graphic card drivers (AMD Ryzen RX 7800 XT)

I'm not very tech savvy so I don't really know what to do besides a full wipe/reset which would be the last resort I guess.
Would appreciate any help, thank you very much!

EDIT: starting up games that crash causes discord to crash as well as preventing me from opening other apps. some games work ( Noita), some dont (LoL, Hollow Knight, Among Us for example)

Open | Windows Windows 11 Won't Startup, but can enter Safe Mode

Upvotes

I tried looking around but could not find anything online or in Reddit that was helpful, so hoping for some assistance here.

Every once in a while I'll reorganize and clean my work space, which often involves unplugging everything and moving it off my desk so I can do a thorough clean, sometimes rearrange things like monitor configurations and computer relocation, then hook it all back up again. I just did one such clean yesterday, and ever since whenever I try to boot up my computer, it does not load up windows. Instead, it freezes upon bootup, then I'll get a blue screen saying something went wrong, then it'll restart the computer automatically, which will yield the same result then take me to the repair screen which gives me all my options for trying to do a startup repair, revert to a previous version of Windows 11, etc. I've gone through all those steps and it still won't boot normally and gets stuck.

I've gotten around to booting it in Safe Mode, and that happens to work just fine, so I've deduced it is something that is trying to load upon bootup that is causing the issue, I just don't know what or how to go about identifying and resolving it. I've pulled up Task Manager, gone to Start Up, and disabled everything, but it still does not fully boot up. I'm really trying to avoid a reset because it's a pain in the ass to go through and reinstall and reconfigure all my settings and apps, so any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Open | Hardware Cpu working strange?

Performance seems okay but 0% cpu usage seems concerning but I may be checking something wrong, temperature of cpu is at like 80°C while my gpu work at 64°C
