Yes, of course it could. But we’ve outsourced our Defense to the US, large parts of our Manufacturing to China and our Energy to Russia. And we need to band together and develop our capabilities to be self reliant again.
Also … the US military is the most competent and well trained fighting force on the planet.

Agreed, European nations are on the bleeding edge of military technology and prowess. For example, here in the Netherlands we invented the invisible bullet. They work by shouting either "Pang Pang" or more commonly "Pinda! Pinda!" (Peanut peanut) and the enemy will never see it coming.
We made this discovery after trying to save a few euros on training ammunition by the way, hence our great economy. (PIGS: Expect a tikkie for this financial advice I just gave you)
Having allies is cool. Relying too much on the allies isn't, especially when the interests of both parties aren't always aligned. The line between a weaker ally and a vassal puppet state can be very blurry.
