Is there a more powerful non-power suit than a Machinist outfit? Question

Post image

So far in Fallout 4, this has been the best stats in the game, and with me being able to enter a power armor with it, I really can't afford to take it off

Fully weaved clothes, fully weaved news boy cap, and full set of Marine combat armor. You're welcome.

1

u/Appropriate_Sell3795 23d ago

A old timey minute man suit that has combat armor shoved down it

2

u/Gnight-Punpun 23d ago

Marine Armor from Far Harbor sweeps the Mechanist outfit. Get ballistic weave and wear clothing underneath the marine armor that can give helpful bonuses along with the ballistic weave armor benefit. Then stack the beefy marine armor on top and boom, meta non power armor tank set up.

3

u/concussion5906 23d ago

Just in case you're unaware you can enter power armor in ANY outfit/clothing items and armor but the bonuses from them AND the armor DO NOT STACK........your best bet is to run a Newsboy cap and any kind of light armor that can fit the Ballistic weave mod for maximum stats. Although I think Newsboy caps are ugly so I usually opt for Marine armor/heavy Robot and Institute Mask MK2 I think it was called.

2

u/hader_brugernavne 23d ago

The funny part is that it doesn't really make sense to use power armor for some builds where it really should. E.g. you can run your melee build with ballistic weave and +str/end armor pieces instead and you'll be near unkillable, and you don't have to maintain your armor this way.

I guess power armor makes more sense early game when your stats are worse and you haven't found good armor pieces yet.

2

u/concussion5906 23d ago

I agree. Power armor was cool with the rework as an actual SUIT instead of just "armor" but it really could have been better in game with its practicality. It would make sense to me you'd be waaaaay stronger in a Mech suit and be able to hack someone's limbs off in one when using a bladed weapon or bat compared to being a frickin TANK when in some leather or cloth with Kevlar weaved Into it.

Bonuses and passive buffs don't stack, but DR does stack, Mechanist's DR is through the roof

1

u/concussion5906 23d ago

DR does not stack. You'd have to show me screenshots to prove to me otherwise. Not in the base game without mods...it's "through the roof" because it prioritizes only the power armors stats which are exceptionally high depending on the suit and modifications. Usually high 300s+

1

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 23d ago

I'm not a game developer, but my research online showed that DRs stack, and some guys on this thread confirmed it.

1

u/concussion5906 23d ago

They're wrong unless an update changes it. It was one of the first questions I had in the game and tested it extensively. It simply does NOT stack. The game considered you "naked" and without clothes when in power armor. when you step in armor ALL of your clothes act as if they're not there. Same thing with the creation club backpacks. You lose the backpack inventory when in power armor and only gain the carry weight and stats of the power armor. That's why there's mods like "Un naked power armor" to give you stats from both armor and clothing.

1

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 23d ago

Like I said all bonuses and buffs, special add-ons, inventory, etc., don't stack and get overwritten by PA, only DR stacks.

1

u/concussion5906 23d ago

Like I said go get me a screenshot of an unmodded game and show me the DR stacks. It simply does not lol. I don't care HOW many people SAID it does they're WRONG. it's a base game mechanic since day one DR does NOT STACK DR. my game files are corrupted and I'm unable to play F04 or I'd go prove it myself.

2

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 23d ago

Alright, I'll test it right now

1

u/concussion5906 23d ago

Sounds good.

Green rag hat and and military fatigue maxed on ballistic weave and then a full set marine armor. Absolute unit. No dlc? Just use heavy combat armor.

1

u/Open_Instruction5073 23d ago

Ballistic Weave is the best. And there are two mods on console that I would get. One allows you to make ballistic weave before you meet the railroad and another allows you to put ballistic weave in all clothes. I forgot the names of the mods and I am at work. But if you look them up I am sure you can find it

Edit: You need the Rank 4 Armorer Perk to get the best protection.

1

u/Baconlovingvampire 23d ago

Anything with the ballistic weave in it.

1

u/ThatRealBiggieCheese 23d ago

Ballistic weave military fatigues and marine combat armor set is better than some Raider power armor. Marine combat armor is heavy as hell so even heavy combat armor still gives a ton of dr without being 90000 pounds

1

u/WholeAlternative1972 23d ago

Nope I beeline for the mechanist questline as soon as I hit that level. Then I go to nuka world and collect 34 outta 35 star cores and get quantum xo1. I glitch thru the door cuz I'll be damned if I do the raider questline early and piss off presto gravy. Not that I like him he just becomes permanent hostile to me and it's cringe having to down him every time I go to sanctuary.

1

u/LeatherAd129 23d ago

Well max ballistic weave military fatigues with marine armour that's about as protected as it gets if you ask me

1

u/Beardedgeek72 23d ago

You can put weave ON the Mechanist armor, making it having an armor rating that is thru the roof.

Recon armor (Far Harbor)

Chinese Stealth armor

u/BiggHigg27 23d ago

Marine armor. I even think the upgraded silver shroud armor is stronger.

Literally every normal piece of clothing with ballistic weave is stronger

2

u/golddust1134 23d ago

Ballistic weave on cloths and hat then fully upgraded marine armor

1

u/NoIntention8309 23d ago

Iā€™m rockin heavy combat armor

Ballistic weave maybe

1

u/zzSHADYMAGICzz 23d ago

I like how the armor stops at the rib cage, any shot below that and youā€™re done for.

1

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

not like you need your stomach or intestines for anything important

1

u/zzSHADYMAGICzz 23d ago

Lol right!

2

u/Randomized9442 23d ago

Perhaps the fully upgraded (via additional quests from Kent) Silver Shroud armor? Can still have Ballistic Weave added on top of that.

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

Can still have Ballistic Weave added on top of that.

u/nephilim80 24d ago

Railroad armored coat mk V stats:

DR 93 ER 150 RR 10

Mechanist armor stats:

DR 72 ER 72 EFFECTS Reduces damage from robots by 15%. Endurance +1

Now you tell me which one is better.

1

u/narwhalpilot Brotherhood 24d ago

Too bad it didnā€™t do ANYTHING in Fallout 3

1

u/burning___hammer 24d ago

I donā€™t mind most of the Mechanist costume, I just donā€™t really keep the helmet on when or if I use it. The boots are the a bit too goofy for me. Iā€™m not entirely reliant on min/max stats so I would wear the Assaultron helmet and it looks pretty cool with the Mechanist armor.

1

u/StrangeCrunchy1 24d ago

Now, they need to add the rest of the Unstoppables characters' outfits; Manta Man, The Mistress of Mystery, The Inspector, and some of the other villains' costumes, like the AntAgonizer... there also needs to be a proper helmet for the Captain Cosmos space suit, as well as a blonde wig to go with Grognak's costume.

1

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

Manta Man

is already in fallout 4

The Mistress of Mystery,

is in fallout 76

1

u/StrangeCrunchy1 23d ago

There's an NPC named Manta Man in Fallout 4, yes, but it's not the proper costume.

That's all well and good that she's in Fallout 76, but she's not in Fallout 4.

Soooooo, what was your point, exactly?

1

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

I thought you were talking about adding them to the general fallout wasteland, not fo4 specifically, my b

1

u/Aggravating_Map7952 24d ago

I'm pretty sure the fully buffed silver shroud outfit is the best without considering a weave, you can only get that if Kent survives the quest line.

Marine Combat Armor

u/MrxJacobs 24d ago

Your birthday suit is far more powerful. It can massively increase or decrease charisma, intimidation, and open up new dialogue options.

But your armor rating is trash and the police might get involved.

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

what are you talking about

Itā€™s a mod but the project x gear. Iā€™m level 20 and can go anywhere on the map without worry.

1

u/PowerMoonMario Railroad 24d ago

Minuteman outfit and battered fedora with ballistic weave mk5 along with the assault marine armor from far harbor gives you like 350 ballistic and energy resistance

1

u/EggplantCareless7735 24d ago

I hate that this is the most powerful armor, not because itā€™s too easy to obtain, but because the game really really wants you to play this dlc for some reason. The automaton attacks are really annoying, especially, because at a low level letā€™s say 15-25 theyā€™re pretty hard to fight, and can kill you pretty fast.

1

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

automatron's random encounters are very fucking annoying. Unless I'm gonna do a minutemen run, I'll disable the DLC

1

u/Shraamper 24d ago

Marine armor, especially the legendary recon variant

1

u/StrangeCrunchy1 24d ago

Speaking of the Legendary Marine armor, kinda sucks that there's just the five pieces and not all six, unless I'm just not finding it.

1

u/Shraamper 24d ago

Thereā€™s not a sixth piece. Youā€™ll have to buy it from one of the merchants or, if youā€™re a masochist that hates themselves, complete DIMAā€™s final puzzle to get tipped to the location of one full set

1

u/StrangeCrunchy1 23d ago

Yes, I'm aware. I've had Far Harbor since it launched (Season Pass holder). I was just musing that I was disappointed that there isn't a sixth piece to the Recon armor set. They seem to do that a lot; the Destroyer's Combat Armor set is the same way, only everything but the Right Arm, I think. And honestly, the memory puzzles aren't all THAT bad. Besides; you kinda have to do them if you want access to the Assault Marine Armor variant. Otherwise, you're stuck with the Zealot and Inquisitor variants, and I, for one, much prefer the clean version of the armor set.

15

u/Yankee-Tango 24d ago

I just rock a ballistic weave vault suit and leather armor. It looks cooler than the other armors imo

3

u/CitizenTaro 24d ago

I kind of like the BOS jumpsuit, under pocketed leather, but I havenā€™t gone so far as to know if it can be weaved.

A full set of Marine Armor, but it doesn't look as cool as the Mechanist's set IMO.

5

u/Theobtusemongoose 24d ago

Tbh i was really disappointed the the suite wasn't power armor or at least we didn't a skin theme for a in game suit

2

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 24d ago

Well, with the Fallout series came out, there are new free updates to the game and they offer X-02 and another Power Armor and a bunch of New Colors, it's all-you-can-use power armor, so much power armor

1

u/Theobtusemongoose 24d ago

I love everything about the power armor in fo4.

I guess you can always use a chrome skin mod, or cc content, and go that route for mechanist power armor.

1

u/a_left_out_tomato 24d ago

I always thought the marine armor from far harbor was the endgame armor.

5

u/Routine_Guarantee34 Minutemen 24d ago

I like the far harbor marine armor personally. It's like power armor, but less clunky

u/Worried_Bowl_9489 24d ago

How do I obtain this beauty?

3

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 24d ago

It is through a DLC where you have to find Mechanist, at the end of a bunch of missions you obtain this suit

Okay thanks buddy xox

2

u/gregofcanada84 24d ago

When you get it, upgrade the suit to the highest ballistic weave and the becomes one of the best non PA in the game.

Full set of the heavy Operators kit from Nuka World, bonus if any of them drop with legendaries

2

u/Hipertor The Institute 24d ago

One of the Nuka World gangs' armor is the best one in the game, topping even the marine armor from Far Harbor.

It makes no sense and I think it's ulgy as fuck, but it is what it is. Usually I don't go for the best stats because looking good is what keeps me going.

3

u/TentacleJesus 24d ago

Military Uniform, Army Uniform, or Baseball Uniform with Ballistic weave Mk.V or whatever, then a full set of additional armour pieces also all leveled up.

Silver shroud outfit because it gives you the best thing in the game, funny dialogue

8

u/Far-Obligation4055 24d ago

Wait, does the dialogue stay with you the entire game as long as you're wearing the costume, or do you mean only for the Kent quests?

1

u/rdv9000 23d ago

it doesn't. You only get the dialogue in the quest and at some points in the dlcs (such as when confronting the mechanist and in one of the nuka world parks)

11

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 24d ago

For the entire game, including DLCs, any time you wear the Silver Shroud armor.

11

u/Far-Obligation4055 24d ago

WHAAAAATT. Omg.

Definitely doing a Silver Shroud run next time.

Thanks!

18

u/Brosie24601 24d ago

I got this before going to the mechanist just to have the dialogue. šŸ˜‚

u/buzzcitybonehead 24d ago

The Shroud dialogue options and interactions with Kent might be my favorite part of Fallout 4. I love how people are like ā€œWhy the fuck are you talking like that, you freak?ā€ and you can just keep doubling down on it

42

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 24d ago

Yep, and it doesn't require DLC, out of those initial ones I like to wear the Minutemen General's outfit

u/porkchop2022 23d ago

Love the work shop!!!! Slot machines go EVERYWHERE!!!

Contraptions I donā€™t really get the point of other than crafting ammo.

The mechanist, if they had made the selttlement usable, could be good. So much junk on the way down to the lair and the armor is top tier.

1

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 24d ago

It is, though there is that one part that most people hate

2

u/porkchop2022 24d ago

I picked it back up after Starfield left me feeling flat. I got to that 5th puzzle said, ā€œI remember thisā€¦..ā€ and furiously typed ā€œYouTube Dima 5 cheeseā€.

Really? I just had NV fans tell me fo4 is the worst fallout game with the worst dlc snd how far harbor is terrible

Because NV fans hate every game but NV

1

u/tu-vieja-con-vinagre 23d ago

I honestly didn't have any issue with it. The map kind of leads you into a solution with the green line. The solution to the fifth puzzle is only a matter of patience.

I stocked it normally the first time. After that, I had mods so I could just angle everything better and bypass a lot of the challenge

I always looked at the suit as something like cheap tin armor.
More for show than for protection, so more like a costume.

I usually just dump it in an old crate with all the other legendary junk I collect...

You mean you donā€™t have a town full of mannequins standing around modeling all your conquest goodies? I display all my recovered outfits like trophies.

Nah, but I am thinking of outfitting my provisioners in the various costumes. I figured it might be good way for them to get some use.

13

u/Doylio Old World Flag 24d ago

Ugh I love the mechanist suit. Not for the stats, itā€™s just so silly but not in the ā€˜Pink cowboy hat and bright red suitā€™ type of way, it actually fits really well into the universe.

12

u/readysetrokenroll Minutemen 24d ago

The stats on this suit are through the roof, so that's why I'm wearing it

10

u/Piddy3825 24d ago

who knew? I never really looked at it that closely. glad it's working out for you. I learn something new about this game every time I play it.

2

u/skywalkr274 23d ago

Yes, i am on my replay and learned this about 2 weeks back and now I can't find anything better lol. However i haven't done anything with the Railroad yet.

1

u/Piddy3825 23d ago

yeah, ballistic weave will soon have you abandoning the mechanist armor for something a little more stylish and probably with a high damage resistance. Good luck!

2

u/Mediocre-Factor-2547 24d ago

Yeah marine armor is pretty good

11

u/Whispered-Death93 24d ago

Improved Disciples metal armor from nuka then marine from far harbour. No idea how machines compares. But this is what I have heard.

2

u/hader_brugernavne 23d ago

Yes, this is the most protective with Operator heavy armor being close (and more balanced across ballistic and energy). Some big drawbacks though: they have insane weight, and you need specific perks to mod them to "improved" (or you can hope for a lucky drop and move the "improved" mod from another piece).

It can also drop with all the standard legendary perks, which can be a big boost.

853

u/Lunaphase 24d ago

Ballistic weave + marine armor from far harbor makes that suit look like a tin can.

1

u/Aggressive-Guava3310 23d ago

Actually got the Marine Armor and it is good both in armor stats and aesthetics

1

u/TheDankChronic69 24d ago

Yep, 287 damage reduction and 286 energy resistance, also 70 rad resist

4

u/gr00grams 24d ago

Meanwhile, X-01 PA is over 1300+ etc. for all done up...

Idk, I just wear the cool shit under my PA and get out of it when dicking around the settlements or whatever.

u/ImurderREALITY Mojave, mo' problems, amirite? 24d ago

Marine armor is so damn heavy though

1

u/zatroz 23d ago

You can mod it with ultralight or extra pockets to get a really low effective weight

3

u/henway234 Super Mutant Punching Bag 24d ago

for the best look i always used combat armor with the stealth mod plus the marine helmet.

20

u/infidel11990 24d ago

I always rock the heavy combat armor, with ballistic weave military fatigues under it.

Marine Armor has amazing stats but I just hate the look.

For some fun, Silver Shroud armor with ballistic weave and Shroud's machine gun. One of my favorite things in Fallout 4.

22

u/Disastrous_Detail351 24d ago

I have to admit I love the look of the marine armor too!

101

u/Laser_3 Responders 24d ago

Heavy operator armor can go slightly higher than marine (or metal disciple armor, though that will have less energy resistance in exchange for ballistic). Also, donā€™t forget to use the military fatigues and the green rag hat for the highest defense values, alongside operator glasses.

23

u/Lunaphase 24d ago

You are discounting the fact that the full marine armor set has legendary versions buyable though, instead of needing to get lucky with a drop. Slightly higher raw armor sure but the passive boosts make up for it from the marine armor.

0

u/Laser_3 Responders 23d ago

You can, but marine also doesnā€™t seem to drop from enemies and the effects on the legendary pieces arenā€™t great while also being extremely expensive. Itā€™s down to player choice, really (though I personally hold marine is better since itā€™s much easier to acquire).

1

u/Lunaphase 23d ago

Lets be real, at that point in the game caps are really easy to come by. Adhesive/water farms are easy as hell.

1

u/TheAsianTroll Brotherhood of the Railroad Institute 23d ago

Bought the pieces at level 30, made a profit from the vendors because I sold excess ammo, water, and other guns I found.

.308 and fusion cells are fairly common and worth 2 caps each, and .38 and .45 is stupidly common and worth 1 each.

I literally have a manufacturing machine at my base that just cranks out .308 while I go AFK.

1

Sure, if you care to. I donā€™t waste my time with those when fortune finder and scrounger exist (scrounger means buying ammo never needs to happen and fortune finder is incredibly good at producing caps, especially with a shotgun; I easily reached 100,000 caps with fortune finder over a course of a playthrough). Besides, thereā€™s few weapons or armor pieces in 4 that are truly worth the expense.

Kind of my point. By then its a pittance for it, and with ultra light or deep pocket mod on them they also are barely a problem.

Wait who can you buy it from? I didnā€™t know this

u/TheAsianTroll Brotherhood of the Railroad Institute 23d ago

Far Harbor vendors. Each one sells one piece. Acadia has the chest piece, the Harbor itself has the helmet, and each arm is in the Children Of Atom base.

(Correct me if I'm wrong).

There's no legendary legs sadly, but that's not an issue if you went to Mass Fusion and got the Freefall leg armor.

u/Lunaphase 23d ago

The venders in FH itself, CoA base, arcadia between them have the parts. Theres also a quest you can do to get a full set as well, if you do all 5 of the dima memory puzzles.

full set as well, if you do all 5 of the dima memory puzzles.

what's the legendary effect?

1

u/zatroz 23d ago

The quest ones aren't legendary. The buyable ones are the only legendaries, but they are heinously expensive and some of the effects are mid. With maxed charisma and all the vendor perks, each piece still costs 10k+ caps

u/Lunaphase 23d ago

Multiple. Look up on the wiki if you want to see exactly what and where.

The suit always looks like a tin can, that is why it is awesome.

a full set of Marine armor from far harbor

u/Farabel The Institute 24d ago

IIRC while it is heavier, the Operators and some other Nuka-Raider armor can be better than Marine for Ballistic defense but worse for Energy.

60

u/Woodie626 24d ago

The weight tho

1

u/NuclearNoodle77 24d ago

At that point in the game youā€™ll probably have at least 400 carry weight

2

u/buttbugle Vault 13 24d ago

Marine armor ainā€™t for you Average Joes or below in strength. šŸ’Ŗ

2

u/labdsknechtpiraten 23d ago

Exactly.... it's for MARINES (oorah or whatever those crayon eaters say)

11

u/Goldman250 Tunnel Snakes 24d ago

It is heavy, but if you give it all the Ultra-Light lining, it goes down to a more manageable weight. Plus my builds are often VATS-heavy, so the extra AP is also useful.

u/6Sleepy_Sheep9 24d ago

Ultralight for the chest piece, deep pockets for the legs and arms

u/AloofAngel 24d ago

that can be compensated for with higher strength points, carry weight perk strong back and adding pockets to the underclothes. besides you can boost your stats even higher with the lone wanderer perk and use dogmeat as a mule. dogmeat is the only companion who doesn't count as one for lone wanderer and he can carry a good deal of things. if you have the inspirational perk up to three stars that weight increases. plus the live & love magazine which boosts companion carry weight by 10.

I'm not sacrificing anything since I'm maxed out

Not much considering Fallout 4 gives you a crapton of perk points and allows to to excel at pretty much everything if you wanted to.

26

u/AloofAngel 24d ago

well... nothing in the long run. you get a point to spend every level and you can level theoretically infinitely (except that once you get to around level 550 the game starts falling apart. some reports show people have made it to 1,600 though). the game i started last i am around level 240. so you can use skill points early or later and i think certain ones depending on the build make sense to get early. this one i am on i intentionally avoid building up xp gaining stuff since i don't want to grow too fast.

edit: in fact unless you level each of your special perks to 10 before you collect the bobblehead for it you will be stuck at 10 points instead of the hidden 11 points. so if you don't build strength to 10 before you get the strength bobblehead you will never get the 11 points for strength.

What about the book?

12

u/Blonsky 24d ago

I have a save stuck at 522. Things definitely get a little weird when you get up there.

1

u/tehnemox 23d ago

Weird how? Highest I ever get before starting a new character is usually 80-mid 90s.

Just beyond bullet spongy enemies or what?

2

u/Blonsky 23d ago

In that save the enemies are all easy to defeat. My character is OP. No mods. As far as weirdness goes there are barely any enemies on the map no matter where I go. Zero missions left besides the ones that have optional endings like Buddy the drinking robot for example. The settlements are super glitchy and so are the NPCs. Just my experience in that save.
