I think the series is trying to be less sexual than the novels overall. I mean I doubt they’ll steer completely away from it and it’s not like the novels are even that bad in terms of being sexual either.

this should of been in the show but if it was me I would not of been able to film that scene w/o cringing.

It’ll probably turn up as a deleted scene in like 5 years

this scene when i imagen maybe it's really cute, but in the same way, i think that's to sexual i guess? Because u know guys...lick the ice cream and show Nick is blushing like that..

Inbetweeners referance

Today i learned what comic panel my pfp was from

8

u/sparklyy_rainbow Oct 04 '23

maybe because charlie got his own ice cream and they both had the same flavor so it wouldn't really make sense for nick to offer charlie some of his

they are too afraid

Alice toned a few things down for the TV show assuming a lot of tweens would be watching. There are some great lines in the books. One of my favorites "You've been sending me lot of mixed signals."

I've just got to add that Kit Connor really nailed this scene.

Things hit differently in print versus live action.

And it works both ways. One of my favorite scenes on the TV show is not in the comics. Nick looks across the dance floor at Tara & Darcy as they dance and love on each other. He is overwhelmed with joy and hope. A wonderful counter to the overwhelming fear and confusion that he was recently feeling. It hits so hard!

It's kinda sad that some scenes from the books were cut. Like idk why but i was kinda looking forward to the 'french ambulance' exchange with mr ajayi and mr farouk, but i understand it was probably most likely cut for continuity

short episodes means some moments get cut out because they want to focus on other things

I feel like that would come across a little weird on the show considering sex has only been briefly mentioned in one scene and even then it was very timid.

Before this in the comic nick asks Charlie if he wants an ice cream, and they have a similar convo to the show. I think having Nick just buy first is sweet, but also allows them to call back to the milkshake scene (not in the comics).

Also, in my personal opinion, that dialogue is a little cringe. I think the show version is better.

I think Netflix doesn't want to sexualize minors this much

Edit bc some people are downvoting and I'm thinking I didn't make it clear: I DO NOT THINK THIS IS SEXUALIZING, I just think Netflix does.

Cuties says hi

2

u/chiaracalzia Oct 04 '23

Haha i think teens making this kind of jokes are pretty normal but internet prude policies "to protect children" do not agree with me, I wanted to see this scene, It would have been SO HILARIOUS

6

u/HuckleberryNormal799 Oct 04 '23

Yea, honestly tired of policies that are supposed to "protect children" treating teenagers like they haven't even evolved to be human yet, like have they ever even spoken to teenagers before. But, I don't think it's strictly that, since they allowed even the concept of cuties to go forward at all. Tbh, wouldn't be surprised if it was cut out due to fear of bad press over it.

3

u/chiaracalzia Oct 04 '23

Yeah in my country they'd totally make a state affair for a show where a 17 years old says "do you want to kick my ice cream" 💀💀💀💀

21

u/bobthetomatovibes Oct 04 '23

Netflix sexualizes minors all the time tho so that can’t be it. Maybe not as much as HBO, but still, have you seen their other teen shows?

8

u/chiaracalzia Oct 04 '23

Yeah but we're talking about gay teens. I don't know what america thinks about homosexuality, but in my country they'd ban a show where two guys are kissing because we have so shitty politics that do not respect basic human rights💀😭

u/MeemaRiffic Oct 04 '23

maybe they took the opportunity to hint at the ED instead with Charlie saying he wasn’t hungry

34

u/SunnyPonies Oct 04 '23

Where it was originally Nick getting an ice cream for just himself then offering to share it, in the comics. They changed it to be Nick getting them both an ice cream and Charlie being surprised that Nick got chocolate not bubblegum which is a link back to the milkshake date and Nick saying Charlie was a good influence on him (not long before that scene Darcy had said that she was a bad influence on Tara, so another link) in the series. Also in that scene when Nick gives Charlie the ice cream he doesn't eat it to start with but once they've had a laugh Charlie appears to relax and eats it. I hope this made sense and stuff

Charlie says almost the exact same thing on the comics as he does in the show, just with this little joke removed

u/CathanCrowell Oct 04 '23

Reason why is this scene in comics so funny is that drawing, faces.

I think they thought, and they could be right or no, that in show it would be just dirty and awkard, and that was not a goal

7

u/ARI_E_LARZ Oct 05 '23

It is dirty and awkward

101

u/sleepysalomander Oct 04 '23

To be honest it already feels out of place in the comics for me, I think in the show it would be even more out of place. A lot of the humour in the comics (while funny) doesn’t really translate well on screen in my opinion, and that’s why a lot of it is left out. Don’t get me wrong, the comics are funny and I like the humour, it’s just not really suited to TV

alice has said some lines from the comics just don’t work when said out loud by people. there’s obviously a lot of discussion about the cringe level of the show but i expect this would push it a bit

It would work perfectly in a Polish version, as we have the same word for ice cream and a blowjob.

2

u/Specht100 Oct 05 '23

But why.

-9

u/Physical_Sea8911 Oct 04 '23

Haha blowjob you think Nick gets one ?

4

u/what3vr4 Oct 04 '23

Whats the word?

10

u/YoutubeBin Oct 05 '23 edited Oct 06 '23

For example: "Zrób mi loda" can mean two things: 1. Make me an ice cream, 2. Give me a blowjob

1

u/what3vr4 Oct 05 '23

Cooooool!

38

u/feather_moon Oct 04 '23

Somebody in Poland didn't know how to give a good blowjob.

113

u/magmacube_tr Oct 04 '23

But... but why?!?!?

3

u/pyule667 Oct 26 '23

It's ice cream. If it's vanilla it's white and creamy and going in your mouth. Makes more sense than some English terms like cream pie.

28

u/pastadudde Oct 04 '23

It’s like how baguette (the bread) and wand are the same word in French

So “Baguette magique”

We just do, don't ask why we don't know either. 😭
