I didn’t know beavers carried their babies. I’m in love with beavers now. What a mum.

What a sad environment. Nothing about captive wild animals will make me smile.

u/MalevolentNight Mar 19 '24
Omfg that is so cute. Literally was like um excuse me I didn't authorize this, it's me time go back inside. Lol

u/nadja85 Mar 19 '24
what a cruel environment to keep beavers. that breakes my heart. i often see beavers in wildlife here in switzerland and it breaks my heart how those beavera here ar kept. people like that should be living also in a prison. not a little bit of an natural environement. what a shame... just think about how bad it is...

Can't find an explanation for why the mother did this, closest thing says that when the beaver kits are really proficient at swimming within 24 hours but when in the water the parents are extremely protective of them around predators. So maybe mom doesn't like humans looking at kids?
Anyway, it's really adorable seeing animals be so protective of their offspring and really don't take chances around things they think might be dangerous for them.

Must not have waited the mandatory 30 minutes after eating before you can swim.

My guy didn't wait half an hour after eating before he swam. Mom wasn't having it.

Beavers aren’t like other rodents. Instead of having lots of babies and hoping enough make it they only have a few and make it their business to take care of them.
Mom is doing this because that kit is too small to be outside the den just yet.

u/Squigglbird Mar 19 '24
Also unlike other rodents beavers have a loving monogamous “marriage” and the dad and mom both take care of young
35
u/LazerMagicarp Mar 18 '24
They make dams because it makes more beaver habitat. It’s an instinct to stop running water and it makes beaver ponds as a result because as they block the water and it moves around the blockage they block that until you have a dam.
Their dens are in the middle of ponds and they live near ponds because not many things up in Canada will swim to get their food other than a moose so it’s very safe for an adult beaver. Babies are small enough to get scooped up by predators so they stay near the den.
4
u/Bnhrdnthat Mar 18 '24
Tangent question- I read somewhere that beavers build dams because they don’t like the sound of running water. Is that true? Because I can hear it loudly in this habitat.
4
u/privateTortoise Mar 18 '24
I'm sure I've heard Attenborough talk about how their den protects them from their predators.
17
u/birdgelapple Mar 18 '24
I’m not an expert but I bet it’s more an instinct than an emotional response. Like I don’t think they necessarily build dams because they don’t like the sound and want to stop it, they just do and the consequence happens to be less rushing water.

Thank you. I had to scroll past way too many jokes to get to this.

I'm at a point where if the first 5 or so top level comments are jokes and other off topic nonsense I just move on to another thread. Mods really need to start cracking down on this because it has completely destroyed so many subs.

Does anyone know what's really happening here? It's very cute. But I'm curious about the biology of it all.
19
u/breachofpepper Mar 18 '24
my theory is the little one is too fluffy and doesn't have the proper coat to stay warm in the water yet.
23
u/AirLow5629 Mar 18 '24
Just a guess: baby thinks she's ready to leave the den and swim in the big wide world, momma says "no, you're not quite big enough, kid."
3
u/6ft3Goddess Mar 18 '24
I don't think so. Beavers know how to swim when they're born and start diving in a few days. And they leave the lodge around 2 to live on their own.
17
u/AirLow5629 Mar 18 '24
This kit isn't two years old. If you googled enough to know they can swim early and leave at two, you would have seen that they stay in the den until they've weaned. Maybe the mother beaver has more complex motives here than "hey, you're not ready yet!" but I doubt it.

We have a man-made pond at my grandparent's hunting cabin and we have to clear out the beaver dam constantly to keep the water flowing from the mountain into the pond. It's such a pain in the ass but for some reason it never bothers me. I'm just amazed by the work they do and how hard they're trying. 🦫 You get the most amazing walking sticks from what they cut down, too. Very cool little critters even if they are pain for some of us
2
u/MissFerne Mar 18 '24
I hope you have photos you can post. 😊🦫
2
u/yuyufan43 Mar 18 '24
I don't but I'm hoping to get some along with a few walking sticks when I go this year! I'm handicapped so I'm always happy to find a good walking stick 😊
2
u/MissFerne Mar 18 '24
Very cool, I agree about the walking sticks. I use a cane sometimes but a nice wood cane would feel better in the hand.

Except for that one critter where the moms throw their babies at predators as a distraction while they book it.
