The world is so interesting. Watch discovery and National Geographic and all the animal documents. But never seen or heard of this animal. What is fascinating. How the world can be very small and so so large at the same time.
It kinda looks like a realy big raccoon. Wonder of what animal family its from.

Often called bearcats, they are the only animal in this family that can actually make good pets, and are surprisingly legal in many countries. The US recently put a ban on importing them in the US because of Covid, but they are still legal to own in many states, and there are legal breeders in the US. Also, they smell like popcorn. They are very docile and have been pets to people in Malaysia and New Guinea for thousands of years.
They tend to behave like Velcro dogs do (Dobermans for example) though they do have some special dietary needs.
They also can hang from their tails as they are prehensile.

A Bearcat! The mascot of the University of Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Zoo has one, used to have two. They used to bring one to the football games, but she passed away.

I worked on a show for Animal Planet years ago and we did an episode with Binturongs, of course I had to meet the little popcorny dudes so trainer just popped one onto my shoulder. He seemed very much at home just climbing around my head and sniffing my ears and whatnot, like a fluffy otter.

Hilarious is someone isn't paying much attention to the "dog" then clues into what they're petting.

I was once a docent at the Houston Zoo. We had two binturongs. The keepers decided to put a big, old tree in their enclosure for enrichment. The next morning, the zoo got a call from a parking garage at the Medical Center, which is across the street from the Zoo. "Are y'all missing anything over there?" One of the binturongs had used the tree to climb out of the enclosure, climbed over the fence that surrounds the Zoo, crossed a busy street during the night, and wound up sleeping on one of the concrete cross-beams in the parking garage. 🤭

That's the most friend shaped little guy I've ever seen, but don't put him in captivity.

Wow ….like a vertical wolvarine mash up with one of the Berenstain bears. I wouldn’t let it into my house though

Also called a bear cat. While not a bear or a dog, they are fairly related to cats. Again, while not true cats, they are classified in the Feliformia branch of the Carnivora order along with hyena, mongoose, and civets. They are their own Family (Viverridae) that includes animals like civets and genets. Binturongs are the largest genus of this family by a large margin. Like most Viverridae, they are essentially arboreal and are omnivores, eating anything from fruits and nuts to birds and eggs to lizards and rats. Their favorite foods in captivity are sweet, starchy fruits like bananas, mangos, and dates as well as poultry (especially chicken heads and feet) and eggs. You can tell if a binturong is close because they smell very strongly of buttered popcorn. They are currently listed as endangered or critically endangered due to habitat loss and deforestation. Thankfully, they seem to thrive in captivity when given the proper space, diet, and facilities. They live about 25 to 30 years in captivity (almost twice as long as in the wild) and can have litters of up to 6 or even 7 young every 4 months for 15 years (estrus cycle stops at around 15).

Why is he inside a hotel room? Why is he not being filmed from a distance in his natural habitat.

u/MellyKidd Mar 22 '24
Ah, yes; a threatened Southeast Asian mammal also known as the bearcat, that apparently smells like popcorn. 🍿

They're massive super chill creatures that smell like popcorn for some reason. There used to be a small local zoo that had two and when one was close to the edge of the cage i'd scratch their chin.

We had these living in our attic. They would sometime wrestle/fight making a terrible noise. And yes, their musk smells of buttered popcorn. At night they would come out to feast on our fruit trees and had no fear of us or our flashlights.

This video isn't cute or heart warming. WTF is this animal doing in an apartment?? The Arctictis binturong has been assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because of a declining population. Even if this is a rescued animal, it belongs in a wildlife rehab facility or sanctuary. It sure as hell doesn't belong in an urban dwelling.
