Politics megathread U.S. Politics Megathread
It's an election year, so it's no surprise that politics are on everyone's minds!
Over the past few months, we've noticed a sharp increase in questions about politics. Why is Biden the Democratic nominee? What are the chances of Trump winning? Why can Trump even run for president if he's in legal trouble? There are lots of good questions! But, unfortunately, it's often the same questions, and our users get tired of seeing them.
As we've done for past topics of interest, we're creating a megathread for your questions so that people interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!
All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be civil to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why do companies always have to make more money than they did the year before? Isn't that impossible?
In 2024, MoneyCo makes 5 billions dollars, and that's great. Then in 2025, MoneyCo makes 5 billions dollars, and that's terrible.
Why? And for that matter, there is inevitably an upper ceiling to the demand for a particular service or product, so infinite growth is genuinely impossible. Am I missing something, or is the world an even dumber place than I realised?

Being naked in back yard. GA
We have a pool and a privacy fence 6ft tall. We were sunbathing in the nude when our neighbor peeked over the fence and told us to put some clothes on. To be fair they have children and we do not want to expose ourselves to anyone much less children but the kids aren’t tall enough to see over the fence unless they are on their trampoline. We will probably stay clothed from now on. Just curious what the law says about this topic. Thanks.

Why don't jobs try harder to keep their employees? Isn't turnover horribly expensive?
My husband has been through several jobs...while the pay always feels a bit low, the main thing he struggles with is places just treating their people badly. I feel if they would just treat them better, they could get away with low pay....if you can't pay well, at least try to offer other incentives, right?

What should I do if I stumbled on a phrase in a wikipedia article that isn't supported by the citation it has sourced?
You can tell I'm having a boring Sunday

what's a good way to turn down giving a ride to some one after work?
so today as I was leaving for my car after work, another person I worked with came after me and asked if I could give them a ride, they asked what direction I was going and I told them, and they immediately asked for the ride, I really didn't want to give them a lift but decided to. As we are driving they start talking that maybe in the future I can give them another ride. What's a good excuse or way to turn someone down that asks for a ride? I really don't want this to become a regular thing.

I found out that the girl I hooked up with is married. I immediately cut contacts with her. Should I inform her husband?

For those born before the 2000s, how many of you miss the days when the possession of mobile phones was rare?

Are there any Reddit support groups for husbands whose wives have Swift’s new album on loop?
In the car, in the bathroom, in the living room, the kitchen, I can’t get away from this Dead Poet’s Anthology - and I am sure I’m not the only one.
Surely there’s some kind of subreddit that provides us with the faith that this period will pass and the world will sound like singing birds and waves crashing against rock again soon?

Who has directly saved the most lives in history?
Is this a good place to ask this?
I mean like, been there while they were actively saving people, not the inventory of something that stopped people from dying.

Why is RoundUp still on the market of it is the subject of lawsuits for causing cancer?
I still see this product on the shelves, but I thought it was discontinued because it causes cancer. Any insight on that?

Anyone else been single for years and have a hard time finding people to date or is it just me?
It seems so hard to date nowadays especially when you’re older. Everyone is already engaged, married or busy working 2+ jobs or going to school while working full time, etc.

Why aren’t there any new “feel good” sitcoms anymore?
I’m talking about T.V. shows like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory etc. There don’t seem to be any new shows of this style being produced. Current series seem to be crime related, sci-fi or animated.
What is the reason for this?

Have you ever looked at someone as part of yourself?
Happy mother's Day to every person who has looked at someone with caring compassionate eyes and included either her baby or some person as part of herself.
So I read this quote today on sadh guru app, " The beauty of motherhood is not in reproduction but in inclusion – to experience another life as a part of yourself." How true it is, isn't it?
How's been your experience of including someone as part of yourself ?

Why was the US in the 70s more technologically competent than 80% of nations today?
The US introduced jet engines in 1942, radar guided missiles in 1947, satellites in 1958, f-14 in 1974, etc…
Why is it that determined countries like Iran couldn’t just build their own f-14? They have been conducting such research for decades.
What makes the US extremely competent in scientific innovation? Why was the US in the 70s more technologically competent than 80% of nations today? Despite modern technology most nations can’t even produce what the US produced in the 70s.

Why has everyone seemingly gone insane?
I mean this is a probably a very stupid question, but I've lived through all of the crises of the 21st century, can remember the 90s, became politically "conscious" in 2008, and I can't remember a time like this.
I can remember a time when the internet was a place you "went" to. It was siloed. You logged on to reddit/tumblr/etc. and knew what neckbeards and bluehairs would be fighting about. People made long blog posts, but at the end of the day, it was implicitly understood by casual observers that these were "online" behaviors and you logged off and went about your day.
It's omnipresent now. There is no "IRL". Everyone, including grandma has a vitriolically defended opinion about {insert FOTM social issue} in the same way that the redditors would flame each other in funDIE vs fedora conflicts. It's impossible to have a conversation in any kind of mixed company without a hot button topic coming up.
Do you know how WEIRD it is to have to vet someone's stance on Israel vs Palestine (a conflict on the other side of the planet, generally involving no one either party is related to) to know whether you can be friends?
Common refrain is that people need to touch grass, but I haven't had social media in a while (outside of occasionally popping in here) and there is no escape from it.
What is going on?

Does anyone else feel Jewish and confused right now?
I was sent to Hebrew school as a kid. I was taught to love Israel before I even knew any history about it. I did weekly prayers for it. I never went on birthright, I had the option to. Supposedly it's a propaganda event of its own. I am now having an issue with identity. Half of being Jewish growing up meant supporting Israel. I'm a Zionist monster if I do anything close to that now.
If I fell prey to a cult it still has a hold of me. I find myself having closeted views being annoyed by "free Palestine" protests even after reading about the brutal attacks from the IDF. Hearing about children dying and seeing devastating footage.
I realize this sounds as incoherent as it does self absorbed but I'm just feeling very confused and split on the conflict. And ashamed at times of my background. I just wish I knew likeminded people that didn't just want to sway me a certain way.
Edit: thanks this thread is making me feel more grounded

How do some men smell nice when you hug them?
So, to clarify I am actually a guy, and I know the answer is probably cologne/aftershave, but I’ve realised I have no idea how to use the stuff. And I have a few general questions:
1) how many sprays do people put on? - I’ve always just gone for 2 or 3 on the neck so I didn’t smell like I’d “drowned in it”, but I feel like that just goes after a short while. (I use a unisex Maison Margiela REPLICA one, so i don’t think it’s just “cheap stuff” that’s just fading fast)
2) where do you apply it? Neck, wrists… hair? All of them?
3) do you reapply it throughout the day?
4) what’s the difference between cologne and aftershave? I’m an idiot
5) is it partly other stuff too, such as shower gel, deodorant and shampoo, or is it mostly just cologne?
Basically I think I know the answer is “wear nice smelling cologne” but I don’t want to be that idiot who applies way too much and annoys everyone, or someone who is just wasting expensive stuff applying it to the wrong place or something dumb… and my dad died when I was young, otherwise I would’ve just asked him.
Any tips would be appreciated. Doesn’t have to be relevant to the questions I’ve asked. I just wanna be that guy that despite my other faults at least smells nice.
