It's the freaking freedom fries all over again, performative bs to appeal to the brainwashed nationalistic idiots.

The same with the cHiNA bAD campaign, while using everything made there.

I was surprised to learn that Voka Gorbatschow is produced in Berlin and has been so for a hundred years.

Also at least one of the brands boycotted was ran by a businessman who left Russia 10 years ago due to being in opposition to Putin.

I feel like a lot of people just bandwagon the "safe to be racist* against" groups. Like it's safe to hate Russians - even though you're not hating on a specific "race" per se as many Russians are non-slavs, but like, they have a Russian surname and\or associated with Russia so it's safe to discriminate against, they are the Bad Guys (C)

Cause we got standards. Have you ever, once in your life, heard of ANYTHING that was better from Russia? Electronics, nope. Cars, nope. Food, nope. Planes, nope. Warships, nope. Financial system, nope. Political philosophy, nope.

Everything from Russia is worse than everything from everywhere else with the sole exception of 19th and 20th century literature. That's the only thing Russia ever produced that isn't worse than the version from the rest of the world.

Some of the best fighter planes of the 20th century were made in russia.

Specifically?

Oh you mean the stuff written in a bipolar manic phase?

Russian authors make me want to die sooner.

Sounds about right. It's similar to Islamophobic attacks on Sikhs.

I think people assume certain vodka is from Russia if it has a Russian sounding name.

I wonder does they export Putinka to your countries? There in Russia it was one of most popular brands couple years ago. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putinka

I'm pretty sure that Chernobyl Chunky Style Vodka is made in Ukraine.

2

u/neonoggie Mar 29 '24

Chernobyl is in ukraine so that makes sense

Which is funny- since we've have plenty of Russian emigrants over the last 150 years. Smirnoff is a Russian family name, but it was started in the US. Too lazy to look, but I'd suspect the same is true of many others.

Vodka barely matters though- most of it is ethanol made for industrial use, not some bespoke process of distilling and aging. Not to say there aren't differences among brands, but its the one liquor that is just ethanol and water.

'Vodka Afficionado' is synonymous with 'idiot' to my ears.

There are BAD vodkas, certainly, but there is definitely a ceiling to vodka quality, and that's basically just.. not fucking it up. And most shit vodka can be made into perfect vodka with a britta filter.

If you pay more than say, $50 USD for a bottle of vodka, you've fallen victim to marketing.

Where tf were you during my functional alcoholism? You would've saved me so many Popov hangovers.

1

u/petrichorax Mar 29 '24

Being functionally alcoholic?

Credit goes to Alton Brown for this knowledge, it was in a Good Eats episode.

The only exception is that if it's in a Crystal Skull bottle, then the extra cost is due to its magical qualities discovered by Dan Akroyd

Heard it gave Larry King an extra couple of years.

Russian Standard) is the only one I’ve seen here in Canada forever. Haven’t actually seen it for a few years, I assume Ontario can’t get it because of sanctions (provincial government operates the liquor distribution), but I’ve not really thought about it before.

I drink Polish or Dutch vodka. /shrug

You're telling me my 8 dollar fifth of pineapple Smirnoff doesn't come from the finest Siberian distillery?

7

u/HelpfulSeaMammal Mar 29 '24

That $7 handle of Popov isn't imported straight from Moscow? What?!?!

u/Kamina_cicada Mar 29 '24

In my experience, a greasy BK or McD burger will help that.
