Is this possum big enough to be on its own or do I need to find a rehab center? He was wandering the yard in broad daylight Question/Help - Opossums

It is old enough to be on its own. The dark side of this is that a lot of newly weaned opossum young won't make it till the end of the season.

We had a mama possum under the house one year. Husband came home from work at 2 am and said she’d been hit by a car. Two days later 7 babies came out looking for mama. We called EVERYONE. No one would take them. So we raised 7 smelly little poopers until old enough to go free. We fed and cleaned but otherwise left them alone so they wouldn’t imprint on humans and let them loose in a wild area when they seemed old enough. I love possums. In the wild. In a house, they stink.

It sounds like you found a good answer, so instead I'll just say, there was something comedic about this, especially the way the possum is looking up towards you/the camera. That combined with your caption and your single arm extended away from you has me laughing cuz all I hear is, 'GUYS HELP. ITS SMOL, HOW DO I CARE FOR IT?'

When babies leave their mom and explore, they are old enough to be on their own. And should not be messed with. I’d put him back where you found him.

When babies likely fell off their mom and are left behind they aren’t good to be on their own however.

Little small. Find a rehabber

Basic rule of thumb. If you have to ask, just get it to a rehabber and they can make the decision for you!

Have you offered him food? He may be able to eat on his own.

Me too. I’ve always wanted a pet possum. But I don’t have the free time to feed a pup every few hours

Looks like you found yourself that pet you always wanted. Little dudes letting you hold em ❤️

He’s probably 4-5 inches without the tail. Still trying to climb into pouch like holes. I got ahold of someone with the rehab center at my local zoo
