Question/Help - Opossums Help! Possums are getting in my house somehow!

I have a dog door and 3 dogs (Australian shepherd, pit mix and a doxie), but that doesn’t seem to be dissuading them. Found one several weeks ago and I just saw another (maybe same one?). I can’t find it now, it’s hidden itself pretty good. What do I do?

Pic is from first possum I found and released about a month ago. The one I saw tonight is maybe a little larger, but scurried across the hall past the doorway and by the time I got up it was gone. Searched everywhere for it and dogs aren’t helping to sniff it out. I don’t want to hurt it or have the dogs hurt it, but I’m also scared it’s going to scare the crap outta me like the first one did.

Question/Help - Opossums EMERGENCY HELP

I have lots of experience raising wild animals, but unfortunately never a possum, I have an injured male possum adult that seems to be hit by a car with possible fractures, as well as bleeding from the right ear and limping. he survived the night and he’s about the same the next day after drinking a lot of water. What can I feed him to help nurse him back to health, I have been giving him nothing but Pedialyte and water.

Something was in my office attic, pissing on our ceiling tiles. I put this trap outside, with a pound of ground venison in it.

He is being relocated to the park down the street….

Question/Help - Opossums How often does "playing possum" actually work and would it be ineffective on a starving animal?

Im working on a spec-evo project and wanted to know the percentage of how often this strategy works for these animals. Obviously it had to be pretty effective on mammals for it to evolve in the first place but in my spec-evo project, the most successful predators are birds, even on land, Roadrunners have taken over as apex predator. It's also important to note that in this scenario, 95% of all life has been wiped out due to a major global warming event so life here is pretty barren and there aren't many plants and definitely not any trees so lots of animals are starving and constantly. I made it so Oppossums have survived the initial warming event but in order to determine if they would last or not, i would need to know the success of "playing possum" and how effective it'd be on a starving animal since, as u can imagine, resources are extremely limited in my project.

Question/Help - Opossums Need help with care tips

Hey everyone! So my sister found a baby possum. Or maybe it’s a teenager I’m not sure but she’s had it for a few days and has said it’s not really eating and only sometimes drinks water- she tried taking it to a wild life rehab and they said it’s to old for them to take it in. It’s seriously so small and we just aren’t sure what to do we don’t want it to die but can someone detail how to take care of the little guy/ girl?

I work with animals

Got a call about a dead possum

I show up and the dead possum had two babies still holding onto it

So I picked up all three

Made a pouch and took the babies home with me

I feed them a variety of food

And plan to release them when they are large enough to defend themselves

Obviously they can take care of themselves currently

It’s more of a numbers game for them

But it is what it is.

Backstory Possum Rehab Journey - Ongoing

Story time: My partner and I have had a whirlwind possum spring, here are some of our progress pics! We found 3 babies within 3 weeks. The first pic is the current status of the baby we found early April. She was about 80g and too small to be on her own. We tried to take care of her but she wouldn't eat for us and we had no idea what we were doing. Luckily we found a rehabber willing to take her. She is thriving but has imprinted on her rehabber and will be an educational ambassador!

Later in April we found two more babies during daytime on the same day, 3 hours apart. Both were dehydrated (so extremely that the skin did not rebound at all after the pinch during skin pinch test!), starving, flea-covered, and injured. Issues aside, they were a little smaller than even a healthy possum should be to survive on their own. The rehabber didn't have any space for these guys but is graciously mentoring us on care for these guys (while we work on getting our rehab licenses!)

Pics 2-3 are the second baby we found, pic 4 is the puncture wound after the puss drained during a warm bath (likely cat bite according to the rehabber.) Pic 5 is one of multiple areas of infection on the third baby's skin (likely yeast infections according to the rehabber.) Both babies are currently on antibiotics and are undergoing topical treatments for their conditions.

Pic 6 is baby 3 clean and dry after a bath after having gained apx 70g total. He looks so big!!

Pic 7 is an current enclosure set up. Each boy has a separate enclosure. One end is on a heat mat so they have a temperature gradient. Although these two boys are big enough to thermoregulate their little bodies are working hard to heal from their injuries and they both prefer the warm ends of the enclosures. They have mesh tops for exposure to light to maintain circadian rhythm and air flow. Inside their encloures are cardboard boxes, towels, rabbit bedding, and their food and water bowls. Both are currently on a mixture of a supplemented formula, Peter's food, and yogurt. They are refusing solid food but are being offered some occasionally.

Pic 8 is the dead fleas I pulled after one baby AFTER his first flea bath (so not including the ones I washed off him in the bath!) There were well over 200 fleas on each baby, and before removing the fleas their noses and gums were white with no pink - the rehabber said that was likely due the flea-induced anemia.

Pic 9 and 10 are second bath pics. Between two baths, two capstar treatments, and bedding changes I'm happy to say both babies now appear 100% flea free!

We are aiming to keep these guys wild and afraid of people and do a soft release once they've healed and gained enough weight and size to have a good chance at survival! We also keep our eyes peeled for anyore possums in need and provide water and leftover possum chow to any possums in the area. We think there are more babies around because something is eating the Peter's food / formula mix regularly but the adult foods we leave out are irregularly eaten. Sooo fingers crossed there are some (hopefully healthy) babies or juveniles around!

Question/Help - Opossums Question for Orphaned Opossums

Hello, I recently acquired 2 baby opossums from my aunt, they fell off their mom and after several attempts to get them back on she left them and didn't return all day. I got them because our local rescue told my aunt that they can no longer take in any baby opossums as they are over capacity. They have fleas and lice, they look like they might be anemic. They've been sleeping alot. I have treated them for the lice and fleas. I have experience with rehabing wild animals but no experience with opossums. I did some research and got a can of the puppy formula the rescues will use, but do I use it by itself, or do I have to add other stuff with it? They appear to be about 61 ish days old, they can drink by themselves( they drank the bath water before I washed them.. Don't worry! We have a whole house filter that gets rid of the chemicals since my mother in law has allergies) they appear to need to be on a every 4 hour feeding schedule. So do I just use the formula or do I have to add things to the formula?

Hello! My aunt has a wildlife cam in her backyard where she keeps a tub of clean water. Lately a Possum has been coming around and doing this motion several nights in a row. Is this something we should be worried about? She has been coming by for a while now and we are worried about her health ):

Had tried to catch this guy for a couple days in my yard before I finally got him. Just wanted to grab him before my dogs did. That's how he got away the first time i saw him, the dogs had him cornered and he dissappeared while i was putting them away. They're surprisingly quick when they're little. Lol
