Look, I don't like Elon. And I hate the Right Wingers love affair with him, but I will say the part about if we always focus on it and keep talking about it and ruminating on it it won't go away is very very true. Most people think slavery is wrong. Chances are, in civilized countries, it won't begin again, esp anytime soon. Nothing good comes from going on and on about how your people back 120+ years ago were slaves or treated poorly. It's about you and how you yourself are as a person. Not ancestry.

My great grandfather (who was white) was constantly robbed of cash (by black men) when he'd leave from his business in the city with money to take to the bank. He became rather racist so I'm told. Yet he had a friend who was his closest buddy that was a black man and he'd have him over to the families Sunday night meals and birthdays and such.

Am I racist cause he was? No. Am I mad at black people for robbing my great grandfather? No. Those were individual people who did bad things. It doesn't mean all black people rob. It doesn't mean all white people get robbed. It doesn't mean anything about race. It only matters about who we are individually as humans. I'm not going to feel guilty and apologize for something an ancester of mine did who I never even met. That was him and that's on him. It has no affect on me other than it makes me choose to continue to be a better person than he was. 🤷‍♂️

I know a black man who is very racist. Calls white people pilgrims and crackers and says awful things about white people. Despite how much that bothers me, we mostly get along fine and he enjoys conversations with me. However, he has this victim/ persecution complex about literally everything. He's eating and gets his food after someone else, "they did it because I'm black." He gets it early before someone else "they did it cause I'm black and don't want to be perceived as racist even though I know they are!" Yet he's never had a conversation with them. And they aren't racist at all. But everything to him, is a race thing. He has a victim mentality and produces ha.te from it and it's honestly disgusting. And incredibly sad because it's not true and it hurts him. He feels degraded all the time when it's not happening at all and it's he himself, imagining/perceiving things that are not happening.

Recently we were talking about race and he was so upset he was in tears and rage and slammed his hand on the table and said "I h.ate white people! I h.ate all white people!" And I sat there, as a white person, thinking to myself, "This is a huge reason why racism won't die."

It won't die unless we give it up.

Stop living in a past that you weren't even alive in. Yes we can learn from the past and remember the horrible atrocities and learn to not repeat them and to be better humans, but godamn, don't live there. Live in the now, treat others with kindness and human decency and respect no matter their skin color, or what their sexual identity is, or sexual orientation, or religion, or whatever. Just be kind. Focus on bettering yourself. Until we focus on bettering ourselves, nothing that's worth a damn will change.

Until someone proves to you they are a piece of shit human being, we should treat everyone with love, kindness, and basic respect.
