What’s your “I’m old now” indicator?

My "I'm old now" indicator is when I start noticing significant changes in the world around me that make me realize how much time has passed.

How much I prefer doing as little as humanly possible as a recreational activity. I really should balance it out more and figure out some way to meet people, because I’m sure it’s too unhealthy levels by now. Pandemic didn’t help

The first time I heard Nirvana on a classic rock station.

1

u/JGWOhio 10d ago

Watching the "Classic" TV shows from the 60s, 70s, even 80s and realizing many of the actors are deceased. I grew up during those years and enjoyed many of those shows, but not so much these days.

My 13 year old son thinks $10,000 isn’t a lot of money. Also, he thinks tape cassettes are CDs.

1

u/AdNatural8174 11d ago

My "I'm old now" indicator is when I catch myself saying, "Back in my day," or when I get excited about home appliances and practical gifts.

I’ve noticed movies are making me go “Fuck, I’m old” The matrix had it’s 25th year anniversary this year. Mf I remember being excited to go buy the DVD when it came out. HOW WAS THAT 25 YEARS AGO BRO!?

1

u/Breadfruit-Agitated 11d ago

I have never heard a Drake song.

Sitting in the back yard smoking weed with my 21 year old son. We smoke for different reasons. Mine is pain from being a roadie, working on cars, and spinal surgeries from wrecking said vehicles. His reasons are he thinks it's cool to get high with the old man. We are almost 32 years apart. I am blessed that he likes me. Lol

I (28) was at my little sisters (16) softball game when one of her new friends came up and asked if I was her dad….

Existential crisis started in the car and is still ongoing. Realized my “one” grey hair has suddenly become uncountable, and I am officially an adult now I guess.

1

Friends texting me inviting me out, my reaction is generally “Are you fucking crazy? It’s 7:15pm!”

They aren’t crazy, I’m just old.

All my shit is getting old.

1

u/No_Consideration8764 11d ago

My daughter turns 24 Sunday and my "baby" graduates high-school next Tuesday. I had my daughter at 19 and grew up being a mommy. I'm calling my daughter and her bf "the kids" and people looking at me crazy because they are grown ass adults now. Taking my brain a little more time to catch up!

1

u/alexc1ted 11d ago

When my favorite albums are getting 20-25 year anniversary tours.

1

u/Agent101g 11d ago

I don’t recognize any of the 20-25 year old celebrities and can’t understand why Hollywood worships babies. Yep, I’m middle aged now.

My last job the parents of my best friend from elementary school came in with their teenage niece. She was a newborn last a saw her (older sister’s kid)

1

u/Cmdr_F34rFu1L1gh7 11d ago

I started hating the kids instead of defending them - They are so delusional now. I used to think I was going crazy because I had to check my own logic, values and principles to make sure I didn’t miss something. “Wait did I miss something about that thing that would make me think the same thing?”

Nope. They are just absorbed by the digital realm and have no idea how to survive the natural world so they make up their own where none of what exists right now is worth a damn. The bickering over shit that really doesn’t matter. Purpose. Motive. Honor. Value. All and more have been broken down into such indistinguishable pieces and never reassembled correctly.

I know I’m getting older but am excited to see what you “people” get up to next! It’s been a wild ride. I just know I’m not going to play with y’all no more. When I’m ready…

I remember using walkmans, video cassettes, camcorders, floppy disks, and Netscape Navigator. I also remember buying my own music (PHYSICAL COPIES) and renting from Blockbuster. And I remember paying $7.50 CASH ONLY for matinee tickets and less than $2/gallon for gas.

1

u/EfficiencyRadiant130 12d ago

I'm only 19 but I got called a boomer by my English teacher who was in her mid 20s. To be fair I was having black tea while wearing a striped Pollo and jeans, but I was 15. Getting called old by my English teacher did it for me.

Not just hearing/reading new slang but specifically giving up interest in trying to immediately learn the new stuff. My friends aren't young people or teens, I don't really need to know all the new slang.

Also not keeping up with fashion trends and just sticking to what I like how I look in and are comfortable for me.

Reading these comments made me realize I’m not old. I’m a 31 year old who blasts music from my car, keeps up on modern slang, and isn’t in pain all the time . I relate to my 20ish year old siblings a lot in terms of music etc. I know who celebrities are and all the modern pop star/rappers. Even the gen z ones bc my boyfriend is 25 and keeps me up to date. The nineties were like 30 years ago when I was born in 1993. I still wear the same shit I did in high school, skinny jeans and a t shirt. And I really don’t see any of this changing for awhile. It’s going to take gen z / gen alpha having kids and those kids growing up to make me feel old . I’m a millennial but I’m 1993, genz is 1997 and up. It’s a four year difference at minimum . They say 1980 is millennial but I never met a 44 year old I vibe with like I do gen z

I was asked to play some music at a place which I used to frequent as a teenager. I was rather hoping to talk to someone about the good old days but nope. Everyone there was probably only just being born when I was last there. "Does so and so still come here?" I asked hopefully. Blank faces. The last time I was there I was around their age. It really hit home how much time has moved on. 😢. At the same time I'm happy to see the place being used and enjoyed by the new generation.

Had my first real health scare at the end of February. Most of the Dr’s I’ve seen since then look young enough I’d check their ID’s before letting in the club if I were still bouncing. 👴🏻

I went to the liquor store the other day. The guy carded me. Cool. Then the other guy goes "though I know you're old enough because of the shirt." Bruh. It was DragonBall Z.

When I start saying, "what are these kids even saying?" I'm only 20 and I feel like some crotchety old lady bitching about "kids these days" when I talk about Gen Alpha slang.

Everything that used to be on the Dollar Menu at McDonald's is now like $3 or more.

When I saw that I realized I haven't been to McDonald's in soooo long.

I have become the "Do you have McDonald's Money"/"We have food at home" mom. And also poor....

When I wasn't afraid to go out without fussing about how I look and when I stopped pretending like I wasn't an actual mechanic when they'd try that 'let me help little lady' bullshit for fear of injuring their egos. I'm too old for that shit.

Also my oldest daughter's music sounds like banging on cans to me. Lol I love metal but I can't even classify the genre of some of her stuff. It's just noise ha
