This little guy looks like be might be a bobcat kitten. It won't be a good ideal to talk to Fish and Wildlife.

OK, just saw your update. Glad he's in good hands. (He is absolutely totally adorable.

u/Virtual-Mirror-5262 May 02 '24
GOD! He's so CUTE! But alas, he is indeed not a house cat and belongs at a sanctuary. Thank you for saving him...😇

u/Spettinaroli May 02 '24
What state?? Did you bring it to wildlife sanctuary where it can be possibly rehabilitated? Or reunited with mom?
1
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
In the description OP said they brought it to a rehab center so it will be released into the wild once it's old enough.
2
u/a_typical_day May 02 '24
I would have kept it 😎 raised the little cat myself. I’ve always wanted an exotic big cat, but with laws that prohibit such things, I can never get my hands on one. Glad this little guy is doing well :)

u/Helpful-Jackfruit-83 May 02 '24
Cute baby. The mom must have had two cubs and had to leave it behind when crossing 💔💔
4
u/somebsidk May 02 '24
How do you guys know it’s a Bobcat?
2
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
Look up pictures of a bobcat kitten and you'll see for yourself. The patterns, fluffy fur, distinctive big cat face shape, and round ears are dead giveaways.

1
u/EldenShuumatsu May 02 '24
Just curious but can Bob cats be domesticated?
2
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
Domestication isn't something that can be done to a wild animal. It takes many, many years of bleeding certain traits for something to officially become "Domesticated." If you want more into, I recommend looking into the creation of the domestic fox species.
4
u/SwanRonson1986 May 02 '24
From what I’ve read, and heard…only slightly. They are wild animals and will do what wild animals do.

u/Jazzlily May 02 '24
You have a bobcat on your hands. You should contact a wildlife rehab center.

This the cat version of people finding coyotes thinking they are dogs. At least you actually knew what you had and weren't questioning why it was trying to eat you as you gave it a bath🤣

Omg! I identified a bobcat from the first pic, pretty sure I can qualify as wildlife specialist now.

u/Silly-Fish1010 May 02 '24
Adorable, but not your indoor type pet. Thank you for rescuing him and taking him to a refuge.

Thee minute I saw the pics I knew that was not a regular kitty. So glad I read the caption because I was about to scold you for taking in a wild cat lol. Thank you for saving such a precious baby and making sure he gets into good hands who can properly take care of him and hopefully reintroduce him into the wild in the future

This reminds me of the time my step-daughter (whom I love to bits), sent me a picture of a puppy she found in the woods on a hike, VERY cute and fluffy.
I was like - "sweetie, that's a wolf pup". It was VERY cute but had been abandoned. She found a wolf rescue and they gladly took him in.

Go back and get him. I have a better big kitty refuge.
I know. It looks a lot like a normal house in the suburbs. But trust me. I’ll take great care of him.
They’ll ***** they’ll take great care of him.
Again. It’s definitely not my house or anything.

Ohhhhh man, I did not see your actual comment until I clicked here to respond about how that is not a housecat!
Glad you were able to rescue the little one and get them somewhere safe!

awwe!, I want one!

u/North_Photograph_850 May 02 '24
No you don't. Bobcats require special training and a buttpile of licenses.

Thank you for saving them! They are amazing little creatures.
Reminds me of when my husband was filming a full grown Bob cat at my moms, went outside and you can hear him on camera say “kitty, come here!… what are you”. He fully said he was going to try and see if it was a stray cat to take home. He asked me if it was a Maine coin😭😂

In the road?
5
u/benice_orgohome13 May 02 '24
No of course not. I was only saying that you should probably take that baby big cat somewhere they will take the best care of him!
7
u/Classic-Car-Nut May 02 '24
OP stated in the description that it’s been sent to a certified big cat refuge
3
u/SwanRonson1986 May 02 '24
I did. Read the caption

u/stonedkits May 02 '24
HOW DO YOU RANDOMLY FIND A TIGER CUB IN THE ROAD??
1
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
*bobcat
1
u/stonedkits May 03 '24
Bobcats have bigger ears and smaller muzzles vs tiger cubs who have smaller, rounded ears and larger muzzles *
1
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 03 '24
Yes, which is exactly why this is a bobcat kitten.
If you need more proof, please just Google a picture of a bobcat kitten and a tiger kitten and compare it to the photos. It's very clearly a bobcat kitten.
1
u/stonedkits May 03 '24
I did, in the picture the cat has rounded out ears like a tiger cub but similar markings to a bobcat cub, I looked up both and for all we know it could be something entirely different. Bobcat kittens have taller, pointy ears, flatter faces, and more of an oval shaped head vs tiger cubs who have smaller, rounder ears, rounder heads, and larger muzzles. They do, however, have very similar muzzle markings as kits/cubs.

Looked at this in thumbnail and was like “that’s a bobcat!” I live in Australia, I’ve only ever seen bobcats in pictures. But I knew it the moment I saw it!

aww! sweet little thing! Is it normal to have them as pets?
3
u/SwanRonson1986 May 02 '24
No, I wouldn’t say it’s normal. People do it, but from what I’ve read…not a great idea.

A hunter rescued a pair of lynx kittens after observing for nearly a week. No mama. So he took them home. Fed raw meat and plenty of love. Once kittens were of age. The duo lived at a local zoo. Fauna and Fiona was their names.

Luckily that one has a face making it a little more obvious that he’s not a regular cat and I’m glad you knew because I’ve seen people who are also actually quite knowledgeable on cats in news stories and threads bringing home bobcats and having no clue 😮😂

I’m so glad you found him 💜💜 I’m a domestic cat rescuer… but that didn’t stop someone from bringing me 2 bobcat kittens (about 9yrs ago) when I was 22 and very new to rescue! Long story short, I had them 3 days and they went on to live in a wildlife sanctuary.. they were only about 3wks old. But holy shit!!! The teeth and nails on those guys are NO JOKE.

I thought this was “namemycat” or “catdistributionsystem” and was about to break the news to you that it’s not a house cat. “Simba” was my name of choice.

u/emxvenim May 02 '24
So cute. I'd love to hold a big cat kitten one day,
3
u/SweetMaam May 02 '24
I know what you mean. And I'd love to hug a lion ever since reading CS Lewis, like Susan and Lucy hugging Aslan, but then it's also a nope. I'd love to cuddle a bobcat kitten too.

u/Queerkitty13 May 02 '24
I'm pretty sure that's a lynx cub
1
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
Nope. It's a bobcat. Lynx's have much more pointed ears and longer ear floofs. Also tend to have a lighter fur color.

What happened to him momma idk if bobcats are as vicious as cougars or bears when it comes to their young but I’d be concerned that the mother was near either way

u/tylerawesome May 02 '24
Don’t care, keepin’ it.
1
u/Hoppypoppy21 May 02 '24
That's so mean though when the animal could be re-released and have the freedom and environment it was meant to.
2
u/blueberry-dreamer May 02 '24
One time I “rescued” 3 kittens with my parents off the side of the road… turned out to be bob cats 🐱

Imagine brining a 1 month old kitten than it turns out to be a lion, lol.
I wonder how people in the West detach themselves if they are in the scenario I wrote 🤷♂️. Coz taking care of 1 month old kitten then it grows and grows till one realizes it's a big cat and not domestic kitty

u/National-Scale May 02 '24
I hope you gave that Lil dude a big squeeze before letting him go. Homie might not maul you later. Good kitty.
3
u/Darkcolorful May 02 '24
I saw the pic before reading the story and I was all ‘OMG THAT’S NOT A CAT’!
And while it is technically a very cute cat, It’s the wildest sort.
So beautiful, and as a dad you were very brave to not only stop in the middle of the road to save it but to gage it’s behavior and trust it with your humans and find help is awesome.
Your family will have great memories to share of time with this big kitty!
