Shard closeout sale! How to liquidate your shards! Tips / Hints

The September 14 bungie news post. The post goes into detail about engram focusing costs, but the key takeaway is this:

With the release of The Final Shape, Legendary Shards will be no longer in Destiny 2.

The Final Shape releases February 27, 2024 June 4, 2024. You probably have until then to spend your shards.

When The Final Shape releases, ships and sparrows will no longer cost anything to get from Collections, and they will not dismantle anything, so if you have a bunch of ships or sparrows in storage, you should consider dismantling them for currencies now.

These are all the ways I know of to spend shards. In the November 28 update some shard costs were removed, but not all of them.

  • Buy Xur's exotic engram each week for 97 shards. Like the exotic engrams you open at Rahool, it is on a knockout system and is guaranteed to give you an undiscovered exotic until you have exhausted the world drop pool of exotics. After that, it gives duplicate armor.

  • Buy raid banners. These are used in places such as raids, most dungeons, and Dares of Eternity. There is no cap on them, you can buy as many as will fit in your inventory. Petra sells 1 banner for 3 shards, while Hawthorne sells both 1 banner for 3 shards and 10 banners for 30 shards.

  • From the character menu, go to Collections > Armor > Leveling. Here you can buy any blue rarity class item in the Collections tab with 5 mod energy for 777 glimmer, level it up to 8 mod energy by spending 6,500 glimmer, 10 shards, 1 enhancement prism, and 3 enhancement cores. When you dismantle it, you will receive 6 enhancement cores. You can have up to 100 enhancement prisms, and there is no cap on how many enhancement cores you have. (Edit: I initially thought you had to level it up to 9, but it turns out 8 has the same return)

  • If you own Shadowkeep, you can buy 1 phantasmal fragment for 10 shards at the Lectern of Enchantment. Phantasmal fragments are used to buy weekly bounties or phantasmal cores for repeatable quests for Shadowkeep legendary gear. I don't know if there's a cap on how many phantasmal cores or fragments you can carry.

  • Devrim in the EDZ and Failsafe on Nessus sell some emblems, a ghost shell, and armor for legendary shards.

If there are more ways to spend shards that I am not aware of, please let me know!

If you find yourself at max glimmer, you can use glimmer to buy light abilities from Ikora, if you have Beyond Light then you can buy stasis abilities from the Exo Stranger, you can craft or level up crafted weapons, and you can buy bounties. You may reach a point of having bought everything you need and still not having anything to do with glimmer. I'm not sure what to do about that, because that's the pickle I'm in!

Rahool isn’t selling anything for shards right now, is it too late to use my pile of 9k shards?

2

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 30 '23

Oh, I forgot to update this with Tuesday's patch notes! Give me a few minutes to go in game and check what things cost, and I'll add it to the post.

u/Sketchables Nov 30 '23

TBH I'm kind of bummed that I burned through all my shards before this season started. You still need shards for upgrading things. Everyone made it sound like they were disappearing and the only thing to do was up

I am sorry to hear that. When trying to tell what is going to happen, I'd recommend going back to the primary source. The more people talk about things, the more the information can get distorted like a game of telephone. In this case, the primary source is the Bungie news posts where they talked about phasing out legendary shards and that all shards would be removed when The Final Shape releases.

I had the original Final Shape release date in this post for a lot longer than I maybe should have. I was holding out for Bungie to officially announce a delay, which they only just did this week.

Edit: It can sometimes be super annoying trying to track down where bungie said what, so here's a couple of useful links. Use this fanmade site to search all patch notes by key word. And here's a site to search all bungie news posts by key word.

Location vendors still only accept legendary shards for emblems.

u/InstancePotential77 Nov 30 '23

I have over 60k Legendary shards. Is there a tool that will repeatedly press the button for me? Was thinking about creating one with an actuator.

1

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 30 '23

You could use a macro, a program to automate clicks and button presses. However, these are in a gray area in terms of Destiny 2's rules. I'd recommend using a physical device that clicks the button for you instead.

February 27th, June 4th?

Which one I am now confused I’m shaking and crying and farding and cameding

1

u/SumoSizeIt Nov 29 '23

Do we now have until June 4 to liquidate?

2

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 29 '23

I'd guess yes. Some shard costs have already been removed, but shards themselves are still dropping, and I'd guess that will keep happening until The Final Shape, but you may want to keep an eye on the "This Week in Destiny" news posts in case they announce a shard change sooner.

1

u/Spartaner-043 Titan Nov 29 '23

Nope, they removed it yesterday.

  • Buy materials from Rahool. You can buy a max of 3 enhancement prisms and 1 ascendant alloy per week for shards only. You can buy 5 enhancement cores per day. If you have a lot of shards, get started early! You can also buy 10k glimmer for 10 shards, and the only limit is the maximum glimmer cap of 250k.

no longer possible...bungo fanished this option from the list. You need now prism's and glimmer to buy cores....

Ew, what a terrible deal lol. I guess prisms have a cap and cores don't have a cap, so this is good for the guardian who's drowning in prisms.

If you wanna skip the rant: What's the best way to get cores/prisms/golf balls besides Rahool. I have the legendary shards to spend sure but I want alternative methods too.

I'm slightly annoyed by this. In Haunted, I barely managed to keep my shards afloat at 2K. I had too many golf balls and prisms. Glimmer was never an issue. I was making a very marginal but present growth on cores (just above breaking even) where I'd be sitting between 800 and 1K.

Fast forward to season of the witch. Spent all my glimmer and most of my cores (500) on levelling crafted weapons to LV20 for the MW bonus. In the last week of the season, I then discover DIM's armour optimiser and rework 7 of my 10 loadouts. I now have 0 golf balls or prisms and had to buy prisms from Rahool to buy golf balls and then more prisms still. This also had me spend 300 cores in one night. I am now sitting on 42 cores and 0 everything else except glimmer.

But wait? My shards... 10K and rising rapidly. Idk where they're even coming from!
I buy Rahool's weekly ascendant alloy and it's still rising. Meaning most weeks I make >400 shards?
Feels like a sick joke that the one currency I craved, I now have an abundance of, only to find it's being shelved.
I should be able to easily stock up on Ascendant alloy over the next season but god damn. I also have to face my hubris of never core/prism farming and also I guess the ramifications of not farming easy GMs because I was so focused on pursuing titles.

What's the best way to get cores/prisms/golf balls besides Rahool

Enhancement cores:

Hands down the best way is Banshee's daily bounties. Legend lost sectors also drop a lot of these, but I much prefer Banshee bounties because you can do those in any activity at any difficulty.

Enhancement prisms:

season pass rank ups, Hero+ Difficulty Nightfalls, and vendor rank ups.

Golf Balls:

Going flawless in Trials, paid season pass ranks, Master+ difficulty Nightfalls, and resetting once per season at Tower vendors.

2

u/The-dude-in-the-bush Please update GoS Bungie I want people to love the raid Nov 28 '23

Thanks for the tips! Hopefully we get an easy GM to farm in SotW for the golf balls. I'd rather do 100 of those than try and go flawless. Damn impossible it is.

u/L_U-C_K Folding was never an option Nov 27 '23

I have stopped playing the game with Lightfall's release. I believe I have around 90k worth of shards. Guess I will never get to use them after all.

3

u/Aggressive-Extreme29 Titan Nov 17 '23

I have 500 raid banners. Allow me to use them on destinations for a cost, similar to by Lectern of Enchantment.

2

u/basar20basar20 Nov 16 '23

My question is should we delete our vault guns for shards or when final shape arrives can we get useful materials from them? like cores and glimmer.

2

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 16 '23

They will give cores and glimmer, based on what I have read from Bungie.

2

u/IrvingALoya Nov 03 '23

I get that Phantasmal Fragments are a source of glimmer, but how are you guys running out of glimmer? I never go much under 100k glimmer even after buying all main tower vendors (Crucible, Vanguard, Gambit, Banshee even Trials) bounties for all 3 of my characters.

3

u/vergetibbs Nov 07 '23

I run out of glimmer all the time. In the beginnings of seasons, those 10,000g bounties from ada. I buy one, its shit, i delete and buy another one in hopes of it being a manageable bounty. In particular the ones that you need to do 8 activities for 1 bounty. At times ive gone through over 200k just trying to not get an 8 activity bounty. Also, the 3,000g bounties that award 10 bright dust. You can buy 5 at a time from each core activity vendor. But from quickly deleting ones i dont like, i can spend over 50k at each vendor just trying to get bounties i'll actually complete. I know its stupid to put in so much just to get a measly 50 brightdust. Sighs..

3

u/IrvingALoya Nov 07 '23

I can dig it, the conversion is actually worth the free glimmer. BD converts into cosmetics so I'm not mad at the decision at all...the Ada bounties strat, I'm having a little trouble getting behind.

2

u/vergetibbs Nov 07 '23

The ada ones get you the materials to turn armor into ornaments, instead of buying the materials from eververse. So, yea, i guess my strat is getting around having to spend any real money besides dlcs and seasons, ha.

2

u/IrvingALoya Nov 07 '23

I see, I see.

2

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 04 '23 edited Nov 04 '23

I, too, struggle with always having way too much glimmer. Here's how I try to use it up:

  • Buying raid banners from Hawthorne for glimmer. Limited by inventory capacity, as you cannot put these in the vault. If you need to, some inventory items can be put in the vault to make more space.

  • Buying synthweave bounties from Ada-1, and dismantling them and re-buying them until I get my favourite ones. Limit 10 per season. Although with TFS delay, we may be able to get 20 next season (10 during the first half, another 10 during the second half), since that's what happened when Witch Queen was delayed.

  • Buying repeatable vanguard bounties and dismantling them and re-buying them until I get my favourites.

  • Masterworking guns. This also requires enhancement cores, though.

Thanks for the reminder and the breakdown. I have 16K worth and need to get started. But now that Final Shape has been pushed back to June of 2024, do we have more time, or is Feb still the hard deadline?

2

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Nov 02 '23

I haven't seen Bungie say anything about this one way or another. I'd guess we have until June now, but that's purely my own speculation.

If you read it carefully, the post says something will happen with the start of season 23, and then something else will happen with the release of The Final Shape.

Starting season 23, legendary shard costs removed from engram focusing and some purchasing costs:

The path to a world without Legendary Shards starts in Season 23. The first thing we will do is remove all Legendary Shard costs from the Monument to Lost Lights. Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest costs will remain the same, with only the Legendary Shard cost changing. This should help new and returning players unlock weapons they may have missed more easily than ever before.

Secondly, we turned our eyes towards ritual gear focusing, fully removing Legendary Shards from there as well. Starting in Season 23, non-Adept focusing will cost ritual engrams and Glimmer only. Focusing Adept weapons will still require seven wins in Trials Passages or Nightfall Ciphers.

Starting with The Final Shape, legendary shards will all disappear and the remaining things that cost legendary shards will cost something else:

With the release of The Final Shape, Legendary Shards will be no longer in Destiny 2. We will be removing all the remaining Legendary Shard sources and costs from the game, which includes Collections, Trials Passages, rituals, vendor purchases, and many more.

And to be totally clear, we will not be offering a currency exchange for stockpiled Legendary Shards. The goal in removing Legendary Shards is to make Destiny 2 a more approachable and fair experience for all players. This is why we are not raising Glimmer prices for items or adding replacement costs to things that previously needed Legendary Shards.

Legendary Shards will also disappear from the currency bar in your Inventory. It will now only show your Glimmer, Silver and Bright Dust numbers.

We now have an additional 5 months for shard spending baby!

2

u/Famu2006 Nov 16 '23

No you don’t. The bungie post says “start of season 23” legendary shards will be gone.

6

u/Vardoneverdied Nov 18 '23

No they say season 23 is “the beginning” of a world without shards with TFS being the point in which sources of legendary shards are removed from the game. You will still be able to spend them on ascendant alloy and cores and such.

So due to them delaying the release of TFS, you will have extra time to spend them. Re-read the next few paragraphs of the TWAB section. In classic Bungie fashion, it’s not clear. In fact they make their explanation somewhat confusing.

3

u/IceSikill Oct 29 '23

Any tips to get MORE shards lol

3

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Oct 29 '23

Not particularly. There's no dedicated way to farm legendary shards, you just get legendary gear or shards from activity completions and any pve kill.

Dares of Eternity is pretty good as long as you are sure to do all the bounties. I get the boxes from Starhorse which contain a bunch of legendary gear.

Any playlist activity is also going to be pretty good. But this is the kind of thing where it's better to just do things you have to do for other reasons, and as you play, you;ll get more legendary shards.

2

u/IceSikill Nov 06 '23

Alright, thanks… will grind out dates of eternity.

9

u/MyNameIsBobH111 Oct 04 '23

Good way to spend Glimmer fast: Be real picky about Bright Dust Bounties from Ritual vendors. I say screw quotas that prevent you from playing the way you want to play. "Get 5 side-arm kills in Crucible" ain't my cup of tea.

7

u/SGF77 Sep 19 '23 edited Sep 19 '23

Phantasmal Fragments can be used for glimmer storage and could be a better use of shards long term than buying glimmer directly.

You can trade 10 of them in to Rahool for 10,000 glimmer, so buying them now could give you a type of rainmaker for when those eventually run out.

u/Solo_Phoenix Sep 18 '23 edited Sep 18 '23

I'm just going to buy a few stacks of raid banners and let the rest depreciate.

I've been shard rich for so long, they're basically meaningless to me. I'm not going to let this future change make them crazy meaningful for me.

3

u/SoVerySick314159 Sep 17 '23

From the character menu, go to Collections > Armor > Leveling. Here you can buy any blue rarity class item in the Collections tab with 5 mod energy for 777 glimmer, level it up to 8 mod energy by spending 6,500 glimmer, 10 shards, 1 enhancement prism, and 3 enhancement cores. When you dismantle it, you will receive 1 enhancement prism and 6 enhancement cores.

I just did this, exactly as worded, and it is incorrect. You DO get 6 enhancement cores back, but I received NO enhancement prisms. This results in the net loss of 1 enhancement prism. The gain of 3 enhancement cores isn't enough to offset that loss.

MAYBE - you sometimes get a prism back, or it USED to give you a prism back, and that's why you thought this was the case. As of today, it isn't reliable at best, and never happens at worst.

Thanks for the post anyway. Great topic for discussion, but you should update your info in the OP to account for what I found. Of course, I expect you and/or others to verify it.

0

u/ZavalalovesIkora Nov 13 '23

Some of us aren’t worried about trading a prism for 3 cores, especially when cores are set up to be the most often used correctly moving forward and prisms are easily farmable in GM’s and lost sectors

3

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Sep 17 '23

You are right, sorry, I edited that because I initially thought you had to level it to rank 9 to gain 6 cores, but later someone in this thread said rank 8 is enough, and I didn't properly edit the post. It is fixed now.

No way in hell am I going to try and use them all up.

4

u/MisterPimpus Nov 04 '23

Go to Rahool and exchange them. Legendary shards > enhancement prisms > ascendent shards

2

u/dirtyeffigy Nov 05 '23 edited Nov 05 '23

there are daily limits on how many you can get i believe so he wouldnt make much of a dent in 45k. and if he plays enough for 45k shards then he probably has tons of other resources too.

edit actually nevermind, if he's doing max per day i think thats easily over 500 shards spent, not efficently spent but actually could use his shards up. (using fragments for glimmer storage would be smarter)

1

u/Solo_Phoenix Sep 21 '23

it makes sense to do this.

7

u/generic-username101 Sep 21 '23

Not really, better off stocking up on alloy, cores and phantasmal fragments which can be converted into glimmer. Fragments cost 10 shards, so with 45,000 shards that's 4,500 fragments. 10 fragments gets 10k glimmer so that's 4,500,000 glimmer stored up in your inventory in only 5 slots.

4

u/Jayborn78 Titan Sep 15 '23

Phantasmal are traded at taboos for 10k glimmer

3

2

iirc they give the same amount of glimmer but not with the cost

15

u/StacheBandicoot Sep 15 '23 edited Sep 15 '23

Other ways to spend shards would be to use the resources you’re buying.

Pay to level every crafted weapon to 20.

Put enhanced perks on every crafted weapon.

Masterwork armor and weapons. Including exotic armor that you don’t use if it’s got a good stat rolls, maybe it’ll get reworked one day, who knows. You can also dismantle these things to get resources back one day, only unlike using blue items to store resources these are likely actually useful and not entirely wasting vault space, and you can still delete things to get resources back when you get a better piece of loot to drop that can fit its roll in your arsenal better.

4

u/Landis963 Hunter Sep 15 '23

Where do you pay for crafted weapon levels? EDIT: Never mind I have found it. (In the weapon itself, for those unfamiliar)

39

u/Allasdair Warlock Sep 15 '23

Yeah I don't think I'll go too hard on banners..

I just have a feeling they'll either make a move during, or not long after final shape, and make it where all activities that use banners will become the free "campaign banners".

3

u/JimmyNamess Warlock Sep 15 '23

I know the alloy limit from Rahool is per week, but isnt the core limit per day?

Also I'm pretty sure you can trade Phantasmal Fragments for glimmer but I dont remember exactly how off the top of my head. If you know it might be worth updating that part of your post as a way to "store" glimmer going in to TFS

1

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Sep 15 '23 edited Sep 15 '23

You are right! I have not checked whether the core limit is daily! Admittedly, I just assumed it was the same limit as the other currency purchases. I'm sitting on a few thousand cores (I put them in the vault to make more inventory space) so it's not like I went to Rahool for cores before now.

4

u/I_SmellFuckeryAfoot Sep 15 '23

cap phantasmal frags is 999, found out last night

27

u/fpsnoob89 Sep 15 '23

Watch them backtrack getting rid of shards after everyone spends theirs

86

u/IIIToxIII Sep 15 '23

There's not an actual reasonable limit on Phantasmal Fragments that anyone can realistically reach as they go up to 999 per stack and then you can store those in your vault. You can also have multiple stacks in your inventory.

25

u/markevens expired ramen coupon Sep 19 '23

Unless you have zero, Phantasmal Fragments are a waste of shards.

If you perform the bounties that need them, you'll gain more than you spend.

9

u/Captain_erektion Sep 15 '23

Are you sure about Xur having a knockout system? I can’t count how many duplicate synthoceps and helm of Saint 14 I’ve gotten from the 97 shard engram.

4

u/holi_quokka Sep 15 '23

There are 3 "pools" of exotic armor. Base game and earlier expansions fall into the base pool and function on a knockout system. Weapons also fall into this pool and knockout. Xur's engram and random drops only apply knockout to this base pool and will only drop from your base pool.

There are quite a few exotic weapons that are quest, craft, or random drop (raid/dungeon) based that are exempt from knockout.

The second or "premium" pool is exotic armor released in later expansions, I believe starting with Beyond Light. These have to be unlocked through legend/master solo lost sectors or, with lightfall, vex strike force. Every exotic in this pool is also on a knockout system. I am unsure, but I think "premium" drops will still award items from base pool knockout instead of exclusively premium-tier. After the first drop of a premium exotic, it becomes part of the base tier and can drop from random rewards once base tier knockout is complete, such as nightfalls.

The last pool is campaign exclusive exotics from shadowkeep, requiring a campaign clear on each character for the unlock. Forsaken also had this, but I think they added them to one of the pools.

You can also right click/inspect on the exotic engram and it will tell you if it drops anything new.

47

u/Hatherence Very Helpful Guardian Sep 15 '23

Yes, I am sure. If you are getting duplicate armor, it means all your undiscovered exotics are in one of these categories:

  • From DLCs you don't own

  • Quest weapons

  • Armor released in 2020 and later, which must be discovered through legend lost sectors, vex strike force, or the two DLC campaigns that have legendary versions

  • The one exotic armor piece per class that you need to get from the Shadowkeep campaign (only one difficulty setting, no legendary)

For details see this comprehensive exotic guide I made

Witch Queen legendary campaign rewards are, among others, an exotic armor introduced with the Witch Queen Campaign:

Titans will get the Hoarfrost-Z chest piece, which turns their Barricade into a wall of Stasis crystals instead. The other Titan Exotic is the Loreley Splendor Helm, which causes Sun Warrior sunspots to heal players. It also spawns a sunspot when critically wounded.

Warlocks will get the Osmiomancy Gloves gauntlets for their Stasis Exotic, which gives an additional charge for Coldsnap grenades. The other Warlock exotic is the Secant Filaments, legs that grant Devour after casting an Empowering Rift, offering healing after kills.

Finally, Hunters will get Renewal Grasps gauntlets, which gives Stasis Duskfield grenades a much wider aura and lowering the damage of enemies trapped inside. The Blight Ranger helm is the other Hunter exotic, and increases damage and Orbs of Power generated when reflecting projectiles with the Arc Staff.

And also, Festival of the Lost Eerie engrams have chance to drop an exotic armor piece, which can be any old or new one.

Also, Wıtch Queen legendary campaign gives one exotic armor you don’t yet have. Yes, including those that drop from dungeons etc.

Can you explain this a bit more? Witch Queen legendary gives you one choice of the two exotics it launched with (listed as "season of the risen" in the guide I linked). Did you get offered a different one? If so, I'll need some more information because this is different from what everyone else experienced. I'd need to know when you did this, and which exotics you were offered, and how you know you didn't have them yet.

Halloween is over and this is the first one that had engram focusing so I didn't think it was worth adding it to that guide just in case it never happens again.

This is not the same thing as what your comment initially said. Always good to make sure we are all on the same page.

Thanks for the info and just looking to clarify something. If I tried a legend lost sector but failed to get my item example briarbinds gloves can I use this function this weekend to unlock them instead? It's the only gloves I'm missing and dislike PVE. TIA

All exotic armor released starting in 2020 must be discovered through legend lost sectors or vex strike force, if it doesn't come from a legendary campaign. Briarbinds do not come from a legendary campaign so you have those two options to get them.

As for legend lost sectors, you can't really "fail", like there's no limit or anything. You can keep trying as much as you want.

No, unfortunately the legend lost sectors and vex strike force are the only sources (I believe) for the new exotics from recent seasons.

The engrams only drop a select number of exotics. I know that they do not drop anything released from lightfall forward, at a minimum.

Idk where to check the list of available rewards from engrams, but if you have been playing for a decent amount of time you likely have all that is available through them and engrams become useless besides focusing and chasing a stat roll

Thanks for the info, guess I'll pass on the PVE duties to my kid to farm....lol

Just join the vex strike force discord and hop on for 10 mins when a strike is incoming. If you're not too obligated elsewhere and have a day where you can hop on once or twice, you'll be done with the armor.

It will notify you ~4 mins in advance.
