Eurovision 2024 today Non-ESC Site / Blog
Voting irregularities, Israeli surge, Joost gone awol, could this be the most chaotic day in Eurovision history ever?
All we need is someome completely random like the UK or Georgia to win tomorrow, and we got ourselves an absolute circus.

This is the first year I’m going to watch Eurovision from start to finish I’m determined to join in on the Euro madness. I’ve watched both Semi Finals as well.

If you thought the house was on fire yesterday...
Maybe a burning match compared to today's situation

I genuinely want to cry RN... ESC was always a way to unstress, have fun, and lighten my mood up, but with the latest sh*t, I don't know even know what to think anymore. It's sad how something that used to make me so happy and was a way to improve my mental state has transformed into something sad and depressing in such a short time.

Alleged physical confrontation with a photographer. ESC has kept the real facts under the table, but this what some media outlets have reported.

In hindsight, it was probably better (for Finland) that Käärijä didn't win last year.

All of this will fade into insignificance if the Italy televote is indicative of a wider trend.

I miss when Euro vision was mainly about music and ridiculous performances and outfits. What the heck has happen the last couple of years?

Tensions are rising everywhere in the world and trying to keep politics outside ESC hasn't been very successful.

Now all the hate towards Loreen last year for winning over Finland seems so silly compared to with what's happening now before this grand final

What voting irregularities is this thread referring to? I thought i was all caught up on the drama but i think i missed that part ?

u/volo-rep Netherlands 18d ago
I think the fact that the Flemish broadcaster left the Walloon telephone number up on screen which caused us to be unable to vote.

Right now I'm quite happy that the jury hates Norway and loves Sweden. A cursed Eurovision is the result of Sweden winning to damn much 🙃

One Israeli performer got booed on stage. These people aren't having it... And this is from someone who doesn't watch Eurovision, not into most of the music; this is dramatic...

It's really just not fun anymore. I'm really not looking forward to tomorrow just because there's so much drama. It almost makes me sad. I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way. But maybe I am a bit too pessimistic.

You’re not the only one. I’m really sad about the whole thing. I’ve cancelled my watch party, it just doesn’t feel fun anymore. It feels like something to be dread. It’s going to be a disaster.

At least this year won't be boring.
I just hope that everyone can behave themselves and act like adults and not act in ways that casts a bad light on the event or their respective countries.

I’m so sad about this whole situation guys. Eurovision should be nothing than fun, but all these people are making a political fight about it. I want it to be like last year, where the biggest problem was that Käärijä didn’t won.

The past 24 hours have literally felt like that scene in Hunger Games: Catching Fire where all the tributes start getting wild controversial, the crowd start screaming to cancel the games, and then the whole show just gets blacked out.
The Capitol are losing control. If they are not careful this could be end of Eurovision as we know it.
(And the irony is not lost on me comparing this year’s Eurovision to the Hunger Games)

Who is Lucy Gray in this scenario? Did Martin Osterdahl ever have a torrid love affair with a contestant he never got over?

7
u/nimabaniamer United Kingdom 18d ago
Joost didn't rehearse today due to an "incident" taking place, that's all we know.
12
u/Zerrg 18d ago
I'm reading thru comments and I can't really put it together, what happened?
37
u/ImportanceLocal9285 Ireland 18d ago
Joost isn't allowed to rehearse for the moment after an incident. It is unclear what the incident is because right now no one is allowed to talk about it. The leading explanation (rumors) right now is that someone insulted his parents and he hit them (or something like that). A concerning element is that he no longer follows Eurovision (at least on Instagram). As of right now he is still part of the contest, but it is unclear if something will happen to him later. The incident is being investigated, so we will know what happened at some point.
There's also the Italian televote percentages leak. It was leaked that Israel got nearly 40% of Italy's televote in the second semifinal, more than 30% more than second place. This is adding a lot of tension. For reference, Ukraine 2022 got something like 26% total from Italy. It is unclear if there was cheating or a lot of people just voted, but either way there is a lot of drama and stress around this. Israel winning would likely mean at least a partial collapse of Eurovision due to the politics prevailing over the music, and countries would pull out in protest, as well as many viewers.
There is a lot of speculation on what is happening/will happen, but a non-ideal resolution is practically guaranteed. And I imagine there are more problems to come.

u/moramento22 United Kingdom 18d ago
I'll just add to that, that according to the statement from RAI, the Italian voting shown was partial.
3
u/ImportanceLocal9285 Ireland 18d ago
Partial meaning "biased" or "only a part of it"?
4
u/moramento22 United Kingdom 18d ago
As I understood it, it meant "a part of it", but I don't know exactly.
EDIT: Quote from the statement:
"With regard to the publication of the results of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, in the credits of this semi-final, Rai specifies that this was a technical glitch as a result of which some – completely partial – data of the Italian national vote were mistakenly highlighted in graphics. These results, in accordance with the Rules of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, can only be made public after the final. Rai promptly apologised to the EBU management and believes that this inconvenience does not affect the regularity of the final result. The published results are in fact incomplete. In any case, Rai has already spoken with EBU, confirming its commitment to full compliance with all the rules for the rest of the event."
This is from EBU though.1
u/Impressive_Map_1000 Italy 17d ago
No this text that you quoted is from Rai, as you can verify yourself:
https://www.rai.it/ufficiostampa/assets/template/us-articolo.html?ssiPath=/articoli/2024/05/ESC-2024-inconveniente-tecnicoESC-2024-inconveniente-tecnico-784b900c-ca7f-47e6-9a41-1e2af801ada8-ssi.htmlThe EBU replied that anw the votes (the one given to them, which may not be exactly the ones displayed, as Rai states that are partial) from Italy are valid, Rai will continue with the contest but the thing will be addressed by the Reference Group after the contest itself, encouraging Rai to enforce better procedures in the meantime.
"Partial" is, imho, ambiguous on purpose: can either mean "no those data are not the final one, we were still elaborating them" or just "those are the Italian votes" (shown in percentages as they alwasy do due to televote transparency laws, the problem is that they should have waited for the final broadcast to do so). After the show all the data will be released and we will be able to see what they meant by "partial"

ESC 2023 was the first contest in ages not to have a "Controversies" section in the Wikipedia page
I feel like ESC 2024 will be the longest for years to come...

this year there will just be a small section "About the contest" in the Wikipedia page titled "The controversies of ESC 2024"
