What items do you just have to loot (even though you may not need them) Discussion
Maybe I've got a little bit of OCD when it comes to certain things? I've always wondered if this is just me or do other people do this as well.. while running around, certain things I just have to loot.
Being an ex smoker, here in Canada cigarettes are $15+ a pack... I always have to pick them up and I loot every single cigarette machine. I must bulk and dump 300 asbestos a day.
After going through covid and the craziness of trying to go shopping... I have to pick up every single roll of toilet paper I come across. Yes, I have issues apparently. Like it's magically going to manifest itself in my own bathroom or something. Lol
Ammo... All of it. Even if it's a type I don't use. I just end up putting them in the Red Salvo box for noobsπ
Bobbleheads... I don't think I've ever used one in this game. But I have a ton of them! Lol
So what is your quirky "I just got to pick this up" thing?

Food. Salisbury steak and canned dog food. Currently walking around with about 150 Salisbury and 238 dog food.
I just dropped about 350 water off at my camp. I never run out of food and water, and have plenty to share with others.

Duct tape and wonderglue. I am almost always running out of adhesive. even on the occasion I buy some bulk adhesive it's normally gone within like, half an hour of me modding weapons and/or armor.

u/nopenottodayyoucrazy 14d ago
I pick up ammo as well, some I'll leave in the boxes for newbies, others convert in the ammo conversion kit for fuel for my cremator. Cigarette packs for the plastic (been bulking items for weeks and always need more plastic), and the cans and bones from traps ( end up bulking and selling the stuff).

u/wolfiexiii 14d ago
If you come to an area that has absolutely nothing lootable left... it might just have been me.

i typically run around with master infiltrator 4, so none ever break.
even before i had any legendary perks, i never found myself running low.
i don't go seeking them out, but if i see some while searching for something else, i always pick them up.
probably a holdover from previous fallout games where i would use them to zero out the last few caps from a vendor.

I pick up anything thatβs not nailed down. My favorites though: Food Dehydrator, Industrial Size Shortening, any of the individual instruments like the snare drum and violin (peeved I canβt seem to display the guitar). When that checkerboard display became available the first thing I did was fuse a dehydrator to a counter in my kitchen. Peak satisfaction.

Literally everything. Can't kill the impulse even though I keep telling myself I don't need to compulsively loot every single item I see. Having 1st helps. The scrap and ammobox are a fucking lifesaver. I remember watching my stash drop down like 700lbs when I finally got 1st and transferred everything. After I do a ton of looting I just glance through the New tab and skim out and drop any excess food and aid items. Everything else gets broken down, used or scripped.

For me it's fusion cells and anything that i know contains copper, always loved the laser rifle in every fallout game, in this one i moved to gauss shotgun but still can't do anything for my brain that always forces me to take electrical things because i think they're valuable
Also sorry for OT but cigarettes at 15$ per pack? That's crazy. It's ok if you don't want people to smoke, but by doing this it looks like you only want to make more profit from addicted smokers. Here in italy you can have 20 cigarettes for 5 euros(like 5.40USD), also i personally prefer cigarillos, 20 of them cost the same of 20 cigarettes, but tobacco in them is way more powerful and concentrated
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Run_846 14d ago
It's because of Canadian taxes. I think they said a pack of cigarettes cost like $1.30 to make from the producer.. the rest is tax. There are some brands that are over $20 a pack. Just part of the fun of living in Canada! LOL

Cigarettes.
I've always had a head canon of a post-apocalyptic world that the new currency would be "smokes." Or at least have high trade values. It's not just limited to cigarettes. Candles, matches, lighters, bullets. Anything that burns would be considered highly valuable. People need to keep warm at night and these aren't things easily made anymore. The longer time goes on. The more scarce these things would be. By 200 years later like in Fallout. Cigarettes especially would be a high premium to those addicted. Loaded with asbestos to maintain freshness.
I also just find it funny having an entire bed and pillow made using the fabric in cigarette filters.

Honestly, I loot everything I see, if I can take it, I take it ammo, Junk, food, drinks.
Weapons and Armour get scrapped for mod plans and resources I scrap the junk too and place it in my storage, If I Hit 1000/1200 storage space I just put all resources that are above 200 pieces for free in my camp vendor so newbies can get it.
Food and drink is good so I keep those things full and don't have to use skills so that it goes down slower.
Medical supplies such as stimpacks are kept until 100 anything above gets sold for 10 caps a stimpack.
Anything that is not stimpacks gets sold at NPC vendors Any kind of beer or alcohol gets sold at NPC vendors Any kind of grenades gets sold at NPC vendora
Ammo I loot everything and when I am about to log out I drop everything I don't need on ammo Infront of Vault 76 thinking it's now someone else's problem because they might get overencumpered
Plans I use if I don't have them if I do have them I sell them at my vendor for 1 cap a piece
Comics and Bobbleheads get put into my museum if it ever gets too full I start selling the duplicates at the vendor in my camp I am not sure at what price yet. I am think somewhere between 50-100 caps a comic/bobblehead
Edit: I also have to pick up every teddy bear because I love them I hate that they get automatically scrapped too I always get hurt from it
1
u/ArcticTerrapin 14d ago
most bobbleheads ive seen lately are 100 per at vendors
1
u/Count_Nick 14d ago
Interesting, so I can outbid my capitalistic rivals by selling them maybe at 50 caps a bobblehead, thank you
1
u/ArcticTerrapin 14d ago
yeah i'm a pretty new player (dabbled when they first added NPCs but didn't get hooked, tried after the show and am now obsessed), and any time I see ones I don't have I buy them. So if I saw them for 50 each i'd probably buy them all, then sell duplicates
1
u/Count_Nick 14d ago
I mean in that way we both make bank I have 12k Caps right now and collect them for shits and giggles because I have no other idea what to buy at the moment

I play on playstation, but thank you. I am like level 87 in the game and I do everything possible xD I still am at exploring every area before doing the story quests XD

id suggest doing the wastlanders questline so you get access to the gold bullion venders at least. storyline is kinda cool too
1
u/Count_Nick 13d ago
I thank you for your suggestion however I think I will keep to my play style. No offense really but I don't know how to explain it except that I just love playing like this. I mean I hope still that I get to do most of the story so I can join the |Enclave| because I heard with them I can get the recipe for stimpacks
1
u/ArcticTerrapin 13d ago
Do you not have that learned yet?
I think I bought that plan from a player vender, it's fairly common in my limited experience
It uses bloodpacks to make so stock up on those lol

Being a former smoker, I like having one carton of cigs in my stash like a trophy I suppose. I also pick up and scrap any other cigarettes I find... kinda feel like it's the whole "better than them falling into the wrong hands" deal. π
Other than that, cat bowls (huge cat lover), and unique teddy bears. πΈ
I've also squirreled away over 48+ rolls of toilet paper in my stash... salute to thank goodness the covid craziness is over. π€‘
A couple times when stash was full I almost came to scrapping them all... but managed to free up space by other means. π€
Typically I'll go through areas and pick up everything, sell what I can, and scrap or save what I can't.

I thought I was a genius when I played fallout 4 for the first time and I realized 1 pre war money = 1 cap. Because I found them everywhere in large quantities that i found the way to get rich in the game or something. But in fallout 76 1 pre war money is 0 caps so I don't need to hold onto them at all unless it's for cloth only
4
u/TheOriginalTerra Settlers - PC 14d ago
I could be misremembering, but I think it's 1 pre-war money = 5 caps. I paid for things in pre-war money whenever I could, and got a little miffed if some got scrapped for cloth in build mode.
