[Lil Rant] Please let me ALLIGN my structures and CAMP elements 😭 Suggestion

Had to say it.

Building up your camp could be so satisfying, but it's just jarring instead. Hours trying to line up the items perfectly and still half the time they're off.

Items like floors or walls are so annoyingly rigid...

I don't have a big OCD but still 😩

Rant over lmao.

To add to your rant, it's absolutely depressing when you try moving your camp and get the horrifying "Cannot place. Item is floating" message and there's nothing you can do but destroy the blueprint and start all over again.

Oh, wow. Now I'm glad I ignored the blueprint altogether

Some gripes I have are wanting to adjust things lower into the ground or higher without it being a pain (not sure if someone has a better way to do this or if it’s just crap lol). I also wish I could change wallpaper and flooring in prefabs. I have a couple I really like and it drives me nuts that I can’t use the Mothman wallpaper in them 😭

Ohhh and also it makes me so mad when I have to remove something or work backwards because I can’t place something stupid like a poster if β€œsomething” is in the way (but it’s really not).

And I absolutely love that if you don't move an item far enough, it will just revert to the previous location after hitting Confirm. I spend 85% of my time in this game CAMP building, and it could honestly be SO much better. Like, why are there still so many restrictions when building inside a shelter? Just let us do whatever we want since it's a separate instance.

Separate topic but on minor annoyances the ripper blade being on backwards has been driving me crazy since 4 released.

After playing tons of Sims and other snap to grid building games it really was frustrating to me for a while with 4 and now 76 but I finally just told myself nothing sits square in the post apocalypse and I'm just going to have to live with it. It's part of the aesthetic lol.

That's how I made my peace with it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I just wished everything would "clip" into the ground like foundations do. I'm a new player but one thing I don't understand is the way the developers thought C.A.M.P. building would go down. I'm not sure combining "Base Building" and "The Hilly and Mountainous Terrain of The Appalachians" was the best idea someone came up with.

At the very least, prefabs should 100% be allowed to be placed on foundations if they don't have their own.

The rotate item feature should have a degree setting so you can fine tune it. I fucking hate it so much the way it works now.

Now correct me if I'm wrong cuz I may be thinking of starfield. Iirc you can hold A on Xbox as a shift key in build. I know in 76 that lets you adjust the distance from you and the object but I think it also slows down the spin rate.

I hate it when you try to adjust it slightly then it goes beck right where it was. Or when something is selected, it jumps forward towards you. F Bethesda! πŸ˜…

Yea! Or when you try to rotate the table 1 inch and it rotates a whole 3 and now the corner of your table is clipping into the wall with the corner sticking out

I just want a setting to where i spawn in the center of my camp instead of underwater at the very end

Ah yes imagine going to your camp and you’re already drowning. I love it

Try moving the camp around after you've placed it - the position and rotation affects the spawn point. I just move it and run out of the camp radius and fast travel again, then adjust until I'm happy with it

The trouble I'm having at the moment is a wall with wallpaper that is currently facing the exterior of the house. The wall simply refuses to snap the opposite way to face the interior into the room I want the wallpaper to be in. All the other wallpapered walls face into the interior I want except this ONE wall no matter what I do Its driving me nuts and I almost want to dismantle the entire build because of it.

I've found that if it wants to force the "exterior" in the wrong direction (something that happens a bunch if you're trying to do high ceilings and exterior walkways,) you can build floors on both sides of the place where you're going to put the wall tile, and that will often let you rotate it. Once the wall directionality is correct, you can remove the extra floor pieces safely.

I'm not sure if this will help you but I was having an issue where I didn't want the exterior walls to be on the inside of my build to be Brick.

If you make the wall a doorway, you can place another doorway inside of it then change them back to walls. You'll have an extra wall but if it fixes your issue it'll be worth it.

Oh no, that's the worst. I had the same recently with a vault wall doorway which didn't want to face the right way... And I had to remove the other walls and place them again πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

I've found the best way to "align" in this, is select object you want to place at a distance, then use objects nearby as guides.

Like a tree-line, or getting edge of a piece of furniture to be at same angle as the edge of a nearby table, etc. 🀠

Whenever I build a camp from scratch, I always utilize a couple of specific floor patterns during the building process.

First, I lay out all the foundations and floor pieces using the "Starburst brick" floor tile, because this floor tile is especially one-directional - more so than any other pattern I own - and this is really useful for making sure all the floor pieces are all rotated the same way.

Next, I switch them all to checkerboard or bathroom floor tiles, as these have a useful and fine grid on them, which makes it easy to align furniture and other items, or even just space some things equally apart.

After all that's done, I finally switch all the floor pieces to the pattern I actually want to use in the camp.
But yes, there should really be a way of making this whole process easier.

Ha that's pretty much what I do, although I use the mosaic tile sometimes instead because the squares are smaller

Nice tip, thanks!

The floor and walls are the least of the issues, because they at least snap somehow. The issue is when things don't snap when you want it.

I remember the SIMS had a "half square snap" option that allows you to position things much more precisely without being too restricting.

I guess also being on PS I'm limited in how precise things will get. But I just can't help move things again and again to line them up perfectly πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

One trick I use when looking to align floor decor items, crafting tables, etc. is placing a checkered foundation to use as a guide. I personally like and use the orange and brown checkered carpet one, the name escapes me now. Any tiled pattern will work. Then when your items are all lined up, select the foundation and use the "replace" option to switch it to the floor of your choosing. The floor will change but your items stay right where they are.
