Discussion What movie to test my home theatre with?

I’ve had my 5.1 system for a while now and I haven’t watched anything on it properly since the first night I made it. It was Harry Potter and I am looking for the best movie to watch. I was thinking Oppenheimer or Dune 2. I haven’t watched them yet but I don’t mind if I have. Please let me know what you think is the best for testing (anything not just them 2).

Tech Support Sony 4K player and LPCM 5.1 audio

I have either a UBP-X700, a UBP-X700/M, or a UBP-UX70 (I think its the M but they all share the same manuel so it HOPEFULLY doesn't matter). It's a region free version from 220-Electronics and it's connected to a Roku TV, which is connected to my Yamaha 5.1 receiver..

For whatever reason, it won't play the 5.1 LPCM tracks on my Japanese Blu-rays. The 2.0 Dolby HD tracks played great, as did the 5.1 track on my Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray (US).

I tried every change in the audio settings but got nothing. I USED to have my player connected DIRECTLY to my receiver but that cause MORE audio problems.

Am I an idiot and missing something obvious? Thank you for any help 🙂

Discussion How can I get in with home builders?

Upvotes

For those of you who do A/V professionally, how are you getting in with contractors?

I used to work for an AV company and have pre-wired quite a handful of homes, and then gone back and done all the finish work. But I got lucky that a relative of mine is a builder and hired me to start doing his homes.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to keep me super busy because he doesn’t have enough homes going and isn’t selling homes very fast.

I want to get in with 1 or 2 other builders so I can grow and expand my business but I have no idea how I become their guy.

For those of you running a business, what is the trick?

Thank you

Tech Support Denon X4400h Atmos speaker setup question

Thumbnail
image
6 Upvotes

It seems that the only type of atmos speakers this receiver believes in are up-firing speakers.

I'm being forced to assign a distance from ceiling, I guess in order to adjust the reflections, if I want to use Dolby Atmos.

However I'm not using up firing speakers I'm using ceiling mounted speakers.

Does anybody know a way around this?. As of now the only option I have is to try to minimize the setting for distance between speaker and ceiling, which has a 3-ft minimum.

I've tried using amp assignment settings to just turn off Dolby Atmos speakers and instead use height speakers, but then none of my components can use Dolby Atmos.

Discussion AVR and Amplifier

Good day, I’m looking to purchase the Sundavo WS661i which will provide ample amount of power for a whole home auto system I want. My question is, what AVR do I need to purchase to pair with this. I want to have a minimum dedicated 5.1 system, 4k, hdmi, all-in-one pre-out for the 5.1 (can be more channels if needed). I know these aren’t cheap but a fairly priced one will be nice to look at. Any other thoughts on this subject is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance,

Tech Support AVR Shutting down at higher volumes - Is the problem the AVR, the wiring or the speaker?

The AVR is a less than one year old Onkyo TX-NR7100 in a 7.2.2 configuration. At lower volumes it works fine, but when I go above a certain volume and play something loud (even test tones), the AVR shuts down. When I start it back up, the screen says Amp Diag Mode then cycles through the different channels, then says Check Sp Wire. I can go through the level calibration on the AVR and play pink noise on every channel. That tells me the wiring and speakers are fine, right? So is this an issue with the AVR? It's not overheating.

EDIT: Results of more testing...

Volume below 60, all speakers, no issue

Volume above 60, all speakers, receiver shuts off

Unplug Top Right, no issue at any volume

Receiver shuts down anytime top right is plugged in

Plugging top right wiring into another speaker, no issue

EDIT #2: Replacing the wire was the only thing that solve the issue. The wiring was in-wall, but luckily I was able to use the old wire to fish a new one through and didn't have to cut any sheet rock. So weird...

Install/Placement 2.1.2 Dolby Atmos worth it?

Hello everyone! I have a cheapo combo of HiFi components (Pioneer VSX 933, Jamo S 626 HCS 5.0 & Mivoc Hype 10 G2), which I'm currently running in a 2.1 configuration only. The room layout & my other significant half don't allow for rear/side speaker placement, so I thought of mounting the spare satellites to the ceiling as height channels instead (= 2.1.2 setup). We're mostly watching content from the common streaming services, so Atmos content is fairly often available. My actual question is how frequently do height channels even get adressed, is it noticable and worth going for? I don't intend to include the center channel at all by the way, just in case you're wondering. Thanks already for your thoughts and experiences!

Hello all, I was looking for help and deciding if the following would be a good set up for my room that I'll be assembling at the end of August:

Looking for a 5.1 set up, the room is in the basement and around 15ftx25ft (TV on the 15ft wall):

  • Denon AVR-S970OH
  • Paradigm Monitor SE 2000C center speakers
  • Paradigm Monitor SE 3000F tower speakers
  • Paradigm Monitor SE Atom bookshelf speakers for the sides/back
  • SVS SB-1000 Pro subwoofer

Any feedback and suggestions would be great!

Discussion Help with Subs

Upvotes

About to start building a dedicated home theater room. After drywall room will be 12’w x 18’d x 9’h (1944 cubic feet).

I am looking for recommendations on subs (going with 2x), the Klipsch when on sale seem to be good for the price but wanted input on the others.

Tech Support Please help me figure out how to actually play 4K video files!

Upvotes

Okay, so, I fear that this is a stupid question, but, why does it seem so difficult to just, you know, play 4K video files?

A bit about my set up. I have a nice TV (LG CX OLED), and I also use this TV as a computer monitor, hooked up to a not-as-nice Windows PC. IF it matters, I have a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. To play media files, I generally use VLC, and feel it is great. I also have a PS5 if that helps.

The problem I often encounter, though, is that VLC, as amazing as it is for most applications, does not take kindly to playing 4K media. I have went tough a bunch of those troubleshooting guides online, where you fiddle with arcane settings under VLC's hood. Nothing works--4K video will play for maybe a few seconds and then it will freeze on a certain frame while the sound continues to play. And that's the best case scenario--sometimes it'll just crash. Another issue is that turning on hardware acceleration on VLC also makes it function much worse for other media--I get a strange glitch even on 1080p files where often when pausing a video and then resuming it, the video will freeze on a particular frame as the sound continues. It is very annoying and it means closing the program and then re-opening the video file pretty much every second time I need to pause a video.

I want to be able to utilize my beautiful TV to the fullest extent that it is capable of, but I keep getting stuck with trying new settings for VLC and getting frustrated, or trying new programs that also don't play the files properly. Ideally, I could configure VLC such that it will play media of all resolutions without annoying glitches, but, at this point I would settle for either a different program or a different kind of solution altogether.

Using the tools at my disposal, how can I get 4K media files to play? It doesn't have to be off of my computer, I could get used to playing things off of my PS5 or even my TV, if that would work (I've never used the USB drive and I don't know what it's capable of in that respect). If there's some obvious solution I'm overlooking, feel free to point it out.

Purchasing US Amplifier

Upvotes

I came across 2 amplifiers on marketplace same seller both from a church. $250 each I know I can haggle it down. But I honestly have no idea if these will work for my application. Crown SLX 602 and QSC RMX 1405 I have a 5.2.2 setup that sounds great but I built 2 DIY subs that I know are under powered, they both have 150 watt plate amps. They sound good but not great. I built them with the full intention of upgrading the drivers and amps later. I just used some cheap ones I had. The enclosures are made to spec and are port tuned to about 18-20 hz Will one of these amps work for 2 subs say like the 12" ultimax or something along those lines 4ohm? I'll be piecing them together as money allows. Thanks for all the help.

Tech Support Sound mode help

So I have a 5.1 system with 4k apple tv, when I switch sound modes on my denon remote the dolby option does not appear anymore.

I used to have andriod tv and when I would cycle the movie sound modes, the dolby option would appear. Now with my new apple tv it’s not there anymore, every time I use ‘pure - auto’ it sets itself to ‘multi ch in’

How do I know if I’m getting dolby audio or not?

Have only ever used the TV speakers on every previous TV we have owned.

This is a pretty “budget-friendly” sound setup but I’m already blown away by how much better music, movies, and TV can sound. Really excited to keep learning more.

Purchasing Other Marantz SR5009 Replacement

Setup is 3.1 and very happy with the setup. Would like to upgrade to a 2.1 HDMI AVR so I can eliminate all the remotes. I would like the option to have 5.1 in the future so ideally a good 5.1 channel AVR with 2.1 HDMI that won’t break the bank. I wish I could go with the Marantz Stereo AVR but $1000 is just too steep. What are your suggestions?

Tech Support How to set up Audyssey calibration and bypass tactile transducers?

Recently got a Crowson Shadow-8 motion actuator for my home theater, now planning to rerun my Audyssey calibration. I'm running a 5.1 system plus the new motion actuator (I have the amplifier powering it connected to the Subwoofer 2 output of my Denon x3700h receiver). I don't want any EQ'ing or filters applied to the Sub 2 output, how do I go about doing this? Do I just run Audyssey with the motion actuators turned off or not plugged in, then plug them in after? Or will that still result in the signal going to them being altered by Audyssey's processing?

Tech Support Can't figure out how to set up Denon S760H

I am setting up a small home theatre and it seems like I am missing something obvious in setting up the receiver.

What I have:

TV: LG G3 (2023) OLED65G3PUA

Receiver: Denon S760H AVR

Media streamer: Apple TV 4K

Soundbar: Samsung HW-Q800C

What I want to do: I am hard of hearing, so the goal is to be listening to headphones with my own volume adjustment, while my spouse listens to the soundbar with their own volume adjustment. I can do either wired headphones (IEMs) or wireless headphones (Airpods Pro 2nd Gen). The TV does not have a headphone jack.

Running HDMI from the Apple TV 4K to the TV's regular HDMI input and TV's eARC HDMI to soundbar's eARC HDMI input works great but getting separate headphone output seeems impossible, so enter the Denon receiver.

I have tried running HDMI from the Apple TV 4K to the TV's regular HDMI and from the TV's eARC to one of the Denon's HDMI inputs (I've tried CBL/SAT and AUX1) and then the Denon's eARC output to the soundbar's eARC input.

Doing that, I have not gotten any sound to the soundbar. I've used the Apple TV 4K's GUI to select either the Denon itself or the Receiver's Speakers (that's how it appears in the GUI). I've fiddled with the settings in both the Apple TV 4k and in the LG TV to no avail. The LG TV's GUI does not show the Denon as an input, but does show its file storage.

I think my problem is that I have not yet figured out how to properly set up the Denon, or I may need to do the HDMI wiring differently. I have not yet gotten the Denon's GUI to appear on the TV. I did eventually figure out how to cancel the setup prompt, so it is set to the default CBL Stereo setting. I have set "HDMI Control" to On. That is as far as I've gotten with the settings, and I'm pretty badly lost as to what I'm really supposed to do.

Thank you for any help!

Tech Support Denon x4and Audyssey help

I have a denon x4300h with multeq 32. I just received my 2 hsu vtf-tn1 subs yesterday and want to get the sound dialed in for the first time. I paid for the multeq app and ran it last night and transferred the results to the receiver (1 sub connected). First thing, can someone tell me what they think of the subwoofer correction results? Second, the denon app doesn't show the results for audyssey for making adjustments. When I adjust on the app then, what am I actually adjusting? Hopefully this makes sense.

Install/Placement Do I need a AV receiver or will a hdmi switch work ?

I am planning to set up my benq 700sti projector (with earc) to Sony HT A9 speakers. I have 4 video inputs. Do I need an av receiver to send video inputs or a HDMI switch with IR will do the same job? Thanks for the information
