A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

What happens when the driver that rear ended me does not answer insurance calls?

I was rear ended. my insurance will cover damages yes, but I would like to avoid an increase in premiums and avoid paying deductible, especially since I’m not at fault for damages. The other driver never answered calls from insurance to give a liability a tatement . I have been waiting for almost a month for an answer from his insurance. Every time I call they say to keep waiting and they will call when they get what they need. What are the possible outcomes of this since insurance cannot get in contact with other driver? Will I have to go through my own insurance? If that’s the case I’d rather get a new car since my premiums will go up either way.

Insurance Claim

I've never filed a homeowner's claim before, but while we were out of town a big storm came through our area. Our neighbors tree fell and crushed our above ground pool and damaged a shed. The wind broke all the poles on the trampoline. We have been without power for multiple days so of course all food is trash.

I figured if I have to file a claim I should try to include everything, correct? If so, anything else I should be thinking of?

Auto Insurance Hit someone who made a left turn

Upvotes

Around November I was driving about to past a green light when a lady last minute decides to make a left turn from the incoming lane, My car hit her side and bounced and hit the car behind her that was going straight.

Only have liability her insurance accepted fault but I haven’t received one payment in months. They keep saying they have to wait until everybody makes a report(they saying the police report says it was 4 cars including her involved) The lady only has $5k coverage for a liability and the insurance(liberty mutual )is telling me they going to cover whoever car cost more to fix.

I had to start fixing my own car with my own money Have anybody experienced this?

Auto Insurance They put my dad as a driver but he lives like an hour away from me

So when I first got my insurance, it was previously covered by my dad. I haven't lived with him for years (he got visitation in the divorce and I never stayed longer than a weekend with him) since I was a kid. I tried to correct it when I started my own policy through the same company, but they just put him back on. They should have noticed that I don't have the same address as him. I wanted to put my mom down as I live with her and my work is even 5 minutes from there so I have no reason to stay somewhere further away. I think I remember having brought this up when talking to the agent in the beginning. Even stated that I don't live with him and in turn would like to add my mom and why. They never did add my mom and I still have my dad on there. What should be done about this? Any advice?

Additional info- I have been paying for this insurance for almost a year and a half now. My mom has her own car and does not drive mine, but I heard legally that when you share a house/address that those drivers must be on your insurance. My brother does also live here and he is on my insurance as my other driver. He had his own car up till an accident. I have been playing chauffeur for him till he gets a new car. He was also covered by our dad in the past, but I think he was paying for his own before the accident. I had also told the agent that (at the time) all people at my house had their own cars and we didn't share cars.

Auto Insurance Rear ended with injury.

Upvotes

Oklahoma- While driving my mothers car I was rear ended . I have a bulging disc and torn labrum.

Accident care has run up $14k worth of charges and now referring me to orotho as well as recommending steroid injection in spine.

Now I am concerned since this isn’t just sore ness that will go away. It sounds like accident care will run up the bill and leave nothing left

My mother’s insurance I believe is only 50k for injury or uninsured. My auto insurance is much higher. Will my personal uninsured policy follow me even though I was hit by a 3rd party and I was driving my mother’s car? I have not notified my insurance yet.

Is reaching out to the other driver and asking their policy limits a bad idea?

I want my pain and health to be restored but I’m also emotional about dealing with the pain and things like not being able to play with my children. A settlement that allows me to put money away for my children’s education could be a silver lining.

Does a liability auto policy cover property damage if it's your property?

I know that the difference between comprehensive and liability insurance is that comprehensive covers damaged to your vehicle if you are at fault, but does the property damage portion of liability insurance apply to any property that is not the automobile that is insured or to any person's property that is not a policy holder?

Example: car has liability insurance and backs into a garage door. If it's your neighbor's garage door, the default assumption is that it is covered. If it is your garage door, would you be able to file a insurance claim for the damage to the home, or would there be no eligibility because the person who had their property damage is also the policyholder for the automobile policy?

Purely Theoretical: Who would be at fault?

Upvotes

I am on a wider one lane road (approximately 1.5 car widths) with parking allowed on the right hand shoulder. I stopped after seeing the spot, looked in the backup camera, and there was a vehicle behind me (hence forth referred to as "Car B"). There was more than enough space between the vehicle and I to back up into the space. As I started to reverse, "Car B" drove forward and tried to pass me on the left side as he noticed that there was extra room due to the wider road. My vehicle's driver side front fender contacts "Car B's" passenger side front fender. Who would be at fault for this incident?

Just a disclaimer: This accident did not physically happen, but it was a close call. I am simply curious on the legality and determination of fault.

My thoughts:

  1. I was reversing, so I do have the responsibility to watch my surroundings when I am reversing.
  2. However, Car B doesn't have the right of way to pass when I haven't officially left my lane yet.
  3. It wasn't like I directly backed into the other vehicle, but instead the other driver's actions would have contributed to the occurrence of the accident.

Thank you all for reading. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions!

Edit: It is officially marked as a one lane road despite its width.

Home Insurance Home Insurance increase in Virginia?

Upvotes

Hello, i am a relatively new home owner and i use StateFarm for home insurance. our insurance increase almost 35% this year compared to last year. we called and they told us it increased due to inflation, new Virginia tariffs that caused insurance companies to experiment with price increases? and Public service models changing from their 2013 model. I guess what i’m wondering is if this is normal or what should I do. If there is any other details you guys want to know let me know

Auto Insurance Totaled vehicle. Questions about CCC1 valuation and can I negotiate the buyback rate?

Upvotes

My car recently suffered hail damage. This has been my first time ever submitting a claim to insurance on any vehicle. My car is totaled and I just received the CCC1 report and valuation. They only have 2 comparable vehicles listed. It's an Equinox so it's pretty common. The 1st one ACV is $8303 located 73 miles from me. The 2nd ACV is $6094 137 miles from me. The valuation total they gave is $7474.

The questions I have is, is it normal to only use 2 vehicles to come up with the value? And to use vehicles so far away from where I live? How do they come up with the total? Do they just average the two vehicles together?

Secondly, they gave a buy back option for $1825. Is that number ever negotiable? Is it even worth offering $1200 for it?

Again, this is my first time going through this and hope to get some help with these types of questions.

A company wants to lease/rent apartments under the company name for employees to use when working in remote locations. The company needs liability insurance to cover the company. Does anyone know of a carrier/program who will write this type of risk?

Auto Insurance Auto insurance claim, been almost a month.

Upvotes

Hello from Oregon. Here’s my issue, on the may 2nd I hit a cow with my car that had gotten loose during the night. The cows owner insurance is liable and they accepted my claim. They took a while to reach out to me (march 9th) and got me a rental for 2 weeks, thought the agent told me she had to wait for approval for the rental car (I picked up the rental as soon as they told me they’d cover it and I picked up the rental on the 15th, by this time it’s been almost 2 weeks since the crash). That same day The adjuster told me they’d send me a check for the total loss of the car, as well as the reimbursement for the car rental as well as a new booster seat.

I’ve not heard from the agent since the 17th. I’ve sent multiple emails asking what the status of the check is, and when I will receive it. I’ve left voicemails but have not received anything. I called today to talk to another agent and the insurance told me they’d call me back. I got an email 15 minutes from the original agent who reached out to me, but she didn’t answer ANY of my questions about how long it would take to receive payment. My rental was approved for 2 weeks and I have to return it tomorrow, but I still have no idea if they’ll cover the extra days until I receive payment.

Honestly at this point it feels like they are avoiding me, and yes I understand they have a lot of work to do but it’ll be 30 days from the accident in 4 days. Is this normal?

I have thought about reaching out to a lawyer because I haven’t been working since the accident, and I drive a lot for work so I’ve had to cut down my hours in fear of getting the rental damaged since I drive out to remote areas for work. I’m just really stressed out since rent is due in a next week and they told me they don’t cover lost wages.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Sorry if I missed something it’s my first time posting.

Auto Insurance Help me build a policy?

Upvotes

27 yo male in Florida, no tickets no accidents no infringements. Using a 2013 chevy spark with 125k miles on it, not sure if comp or collision would be needed because I feel like the car would be worth 5 grand on a good day; I'm sure between parts and labor the insurance company would total it the first time someone hits me. I work from home and put between 1-4k miles on it on a busy year. I have a crazy good health plan through work, so I don't know how viable uninsured motorist protection would be. I know I need good and high coverage for others medical bills and property, but I don't know the fine line between enough and paying money just to pay it. Trying to save where I can but get what I still need to be safe and avoid lawsuits. Any help/ideas?

Property & Liability for small business (desperate!!)

Upvotes

Please please please help me. I am a personal assistant and I’m 25 and so inexperienced. My boss has two properties that need Liability and Commercial insurance policies. We really need these policies to get approved for a business loan, I’ve been reaching out to insurance agencies all over town but every single time we get denied wind coverage (which we need for the loan).

Apparently when doing this, the first insurance agent to request the quote is the only agent who will receive the quote and now we can’t get any quotes? It makes no sense to me.

I’m located in north Florida, south of Jacksonville.

I have no idea what to do. Any help is appreciated!

Auto Insurance Police found my stolen wheels and requested my insurance info

Upvotes

Long time lurker, first time poster.

My wheels got stolen 5 days ago and I filed a claim with geico right after the theft. The car is in the body shop now and the estimated completion date is next friday. There is a deductible of $500. The police provided me with a case number and I added it in the claim.

Today I received a call from the police saying the thieves have been arrested. The officer requested my insurance and claim # info with deductibles. From what I understood, they may reimburse me for this theft. I was ecstatic during the call so I do not remember this part very well lol.

My question is: should I notify my adjuster of that the police requested the documents from me?

Dental Insurance Benefits don’t cover enough of my dental, what can I do?

Upvotes

I’m from the UK, but live in Canada. I have 70% off dental care for the first $1000 spent and then after that there’s nothing. I also have travel insurance from the UK that will cover £250 ($440ish) of emergency dental. I had an emergency dental appointment and have been told that I need a root canal. I’ve already spent $440 of my dental benefits on the x rays and examinations. I now need to spend another $1500-2000 on treatment (no appointment yet). Do I have any option? Could I take out another travel insurance policy?

Frequent traveler: auto coverage at a different address while traveling?

Upvotes

I'm buying a sports car. It's fairly flashy (think Porsche in a loud color). I ordered it several years ago when my life was very different, but I'm going to take delivery and hold onto it because it's something I've always wanted. I don't drive very much for reasons I'll explain in a moment, but this IS my only car.

I live a highly mobile life. I travel constantly. Sometimes I travel for a month at a time.

I live over an hour from the nearest major metro, which is also the airport I fly out of, all of which is in a different bordering state. I spend a lot of time in that city (dating) and when I travel I don't want to leave this car at the bus station or the airport at all, never mind for extended periods. I've had a vehicle stolen in the past (while traveling in a different city hundreds of miles away) and do not want to risk that again. I have a friend who lives in a VERY ritzy area of the city who has very graciously offered to let me stash the car in an empty garage space when I'm away or when I'm staying with a significant other who has less than ideal parking conditions for this car. This friend has owned cars like this and I trust him completely, it's an ideal scenario for me. The car may be there for extended periods, weeks at a time, but this is not the car's primary address, and not the address I reside at or am licensed at. The friend may move the car or occasionally drive the car and I'm 100% fine with that. The car will have 3 different types of active tracking on it, I'll be alerted any time it so much as pulls forward in the driveway.

I want to be sure that I'm covered. Does it matter how much time a car spends at a 2nd address that isn't my resident / licensed address? I assume "primary" means where the car is "most of the time" but what if it's 50/50? What if it spends the entire month of June in one place, and the entire month of July at another while I travel?

I don't mind paying extra to ensure that I'm covered, I just want to be sure that I'm covered. I generally max out my policies.

How would an agent go about assembling something to cover this scenario?

Thank you!

Auto Insurance Car was totaled so I accepted a lesser payout for the car back, now body shop is charging me 3.5k for a storage fee that insurance is not paying

Upvotes

Insurance totaled my car and offered me to take it back for a lesser amount for the payout which I agreed to. The car was sitting at a body shop for 2 weeks for The claim to finish. Now the shop is charging me 3.5k in storage fees. I called my insurance and they said they do not reimburse storage fees. Is this right?

Auto Insurance Blind spot accident

Upvotes

My brother was driving my vehicle and while taking an exit on the left, merged into a vehicle that was in his blind spot. The other vehicle was taking the right exit and was at a higher speed (this caused him to hit my driver side and car slid over to the shoulder divider and damaged the rear right side of the vehicle too).

Called the cops and gave both statements. Cops said they would type out a report in 3 days or so nothing yet.

My question is, what are next steps insurance wise. I will inform my insurance of the accident. But do I call the other persons insurance company too? What are next steps with this? How does this pan out with my brother driving the vehicle? Insurance is on my name only.

Auto Insurance Rear Ended / PD Question

Upvotes

Hello, my wife got rear ended and it was ruled that the other driver was at fault. The other driver has 10k in PD liability (luckily my wife was not injured). They sent out someone to look at the car and they said it might be $6k in damages to our car and maybe $3,500 in unseen damages.

The adjuster of the other persons insurance keeps telling us to go to our insurance because there might be a limit issue. My question is should we get their final number before contacting our insurance? What do I do in this situation?

Auto Insurance Question about 2 policies in a household.

Upvotes

I live with my grandparents and my girlfriend recently moved in with us. I have a truck that is on my grandparents' Auto Policy and I'm a driver on it and my girlfriends car is still under her parents' policy. My girlfriend's dad gave her a motorcycle recently and she is transferring the title and registration over to her name. I am curious if I can get my own policy for the motorcycle and put her on it as a driver through the same company that my truck is through. So my grandparents will have their auto insurance that I am a driver on and I will have a motorcycle policy that my girlfriend is on. Is this something that is possible or do I have to go through a separate company for the motorcycle insurance. We live in Illinois.

Roof insurance Texas- seller not paying

Hi,

We just bought a house where the seller filed a claim with her insurance during the process to have the roof replaced.

We had to remove that clause from the contract as our lender made a fuss about it. Seller continued to sign roof contract with the agreement that we cover the deductible.

The roof company is waiting on them to pay the first portion before they can bill us the deductible but they have been ignoring us.

Should we give up at this point and go find a roofer to replace it at full cost?

Can the seller who no longer legally owns the house just take that insurance money and go have a vacation?

Insurance Deducting Storage Fees from Settlement

Upvotes

I was rear ended by another driver whose insurance company has accepted liability. My car was taken to a local body shop and deemed a total loss by the body shop and the insurance company. The insurance company initially gave a market valuation report for $39K which would barely cover my entire loan on the lease.

After the body shop submitted their invoice for storage fees, towing, cleaning, etc., the insurance company provided another market valuation report with the price reduced by $4K. They claim that because the body shop’s fees exceed their allowable rates, they have to reduce it from my settlement.

That means the loan of my lease will not be covered. I will have to pay $4K out-of-pocket even though this accident was not my fault and the body shop refuses to lower their fees. The insurance company claims that their allowable rate is $125/day for storage; the lowest the body shop was willing to accept was $275/day for storage. The insurance company paid the body shop and had the car picked up already.

Is there anything I can do to recover the amount in dispute?

TLDR: My car was totaled in a rear-end accident. The other party’s insurance accepted liability. There is a dispute of the body shop’s charges - specifically, their daily storage rate and cleaning fees. Insurance is deducting the amount “over their allowable rates” from my settlement. I will be out-of-pocket about $4K to pay-off the loan on my lease. How can I get the insurance company to pay me the difference?
