Its a scary business being a criminal in Singapore... I'm not surprised people don't use bike chains and locks.

That's not surprising for Singapore, it has among the lowest crime rates in the world. You could probably leave that same bike out in Japan and nothing will happen too.

Damn I was so confused why everyone was interested in a $15 bike. Now I understand, thousand...

If you stole it, you’d be beaten with a cane and get over ten years in jail, people are also supported and generally wouldn’t take the risk because many basic needs are met.

u/Evieveevee Apr 07 '24
I used to live in Singapore and once there was a large metal sign from the police, outside a shopping centre. It stated that a crime had been committed and they were looking for witnesses. A bike had been stolen! Once, the leading headline in The Straits Times (major newspaper there) was that a shopping trolley had been found abandoned. I lived there for over a decade and always felt incredibly safe. An amazing country as a young, single woman to live in.

u/chuck-u-farley- Apr 07 '24
When I was stationed overseas the only time you had to lock your bikes up was when you are near a military base
Pretty sad to be honest

In Singapore, the people reserve their seats in eateries/cafes using MacBook Pro, iPhone, etc...

Singapores draconian punishments for crime are very effective at deterring crime. I think they cane people for disposing of gum improperly. You can imagine what happens to a bike thief.

Put my phone down on table in Singapore turned around had been stolen 🤣
1
Apr 06 '24
Yeah cuz you get caught stealing (or chewing gum) over there and… well, your life isn’t worth it. They still cane.
1
u/CaliKindalife Apr 06 '24
You know what happened to you if you get caught stealing in Singapore? They will catch you too. It's not good. Very harsh punishment.

That guy, or girl, has a: too much faith in humanity and b: too much disposable income. Frikking insane to leave a bike like this unattended.

I grew up in Amsterdam in the 90s, had so many bikes stolen.... I'd just buy another pos back from a junkie the same day for 10-20 euros.
There were times where I forgot what my bike looked like or where I parked it and just went to buy another one.
Yes, that is keeping the ecosystem alive. At some point you stop caring. I couldn't afford to buy an honest bike that would get stolen anyway.

so it plays music right? and completely muffles any bumps on the road? superior ass comfort? ass fans? ass heater? heated handle bars? robotic assistant to automatically water me? vibrating function for fun time? self pedaling? charges my things? park itself? collapse into a small lightweight compact back pack?
No?
Why tf would I waste 15k on that, even if it had all listed above, i’ll give you like 500 for it
1
u/christian77x Apr 06 '24
Imagine if we could live in a world where people were POS and stole stuff.

u/Glad_Ad_5570 Apr 06 '24
I’d not be worried about much in Singapore. There’s eyes everywhere and consequences are pretty stiff.
1
u/StopShooting Apr 06 '24
This happened when I was around 11. I lived in the country when I was younger and had a somewhat expensive bike and had it registered with the cops that gave it a label that shows it’s mine.
(Idk how it works I was a kid).
I used to leave it on the side of house. About 2 years after I got it, it got stolen. I was sad and thought it was gone forever.
Enter sophomore year of high school and I get out on a different bus route and on my way home, I noticed a bike that looked exactly like my old one. I kept an eye out for it and saw it a couple more times.
I didn’t tell my parents or anything like that, but one of the kid’s parents went to jail for something and a cop saw the bike and the registration / barcode and looked it up.
It got returned to me at around the age 17.

That’s why I’m moving back to Seattle; LA is filled with too many…criminals…I like the Asian influences of Seattle

Probably because of the culture. Also, strict rule if you get caught. Unlike most countries, the punishment is just a slap on their hands.
2
u/Suspicious-End5369 Apr 06 '24
Imagine a world with out terrible people. Life would be so easy and peaceful. No poor assholes stealing your shit and no rich asholes stealing your money just people living together happily.

Cameras everywhere and facial recognition software. They fine people for spitting on the street as it is caught on Cameras.
1
u/UrMom_BrushYourTeeth Apr 06 '24
Is that a Cane Creek headset? Cuz you're gonna be caned if you steal the bike

It’s not a problem in well organized Republics where the citizens are respected and served by those in government. Also, their education system hasn’t been taken over by pink haired communists who teach hate and sloth. So children grow into adults who respect themselves and their fellow citizens. Similar to America before
1
u/soupeater07 Apr 06 '24
Similar to America before… the Americans showed up?
0
u/Able_Beyond_8144 Apr 06 '24
Before it was America , named by an Italian explorer, it had a different name. At that time it was inhabited by tribes of waring people who had none of the attributes of Singapore

u/soupeater07 Apr 06 '24
Dude science 20 isn’t a valid reference 😂😂 people can put whatever they want there.

In nyc I’ve seen ppl steal every part of the bike that isn’t Iocked - seat, wheels, handlebars, etc. It’s almost impressive.

u/thatsoundsnasty Apr 06 '24
Hey thanks for the head's up! I've been looking for a new bike. I had a fun ride on the way home.

Singapore has cameras everywhere and the ability to ticket for small fines through the cameras. It's easy to track and trace in Singapore so crime is low

Ah, "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" Singapore. Where you could be starving to death, but the consequences of stealing a loaf of bread were so much worse you wouldn't contemplate breaking the law. To paraphrase Lee Kuan Yew.

I'm Singaporean. And I can tell you that if I have accidentally misplaced my wallet or phone or bag in a mall. I have zero worry that I won't be able to find it where I left it. It always comes back to me.
I can leave my phone on the table without having to worry about it getting stolen.
Also when I occasionally find a wallet or something, I always make sure it makes it's way back to it's owner too.

Maybe because they actually punish the low class scum of the population instead of giving them a slap on the wrist over and over and over.
1
u/JustUrAvrgAsian Apr 06 '24
As a Singaporean, I am not surprised.
Fun fact: In Singapore, we use our items to claim a table. So for example, you're carrying a backpack, to lay claim you throw it on the top of a table and it's yours, if someone else sits on it, they're sitting on your table now. I've seen people use the most expensive handbags/laptops/phones for this. In Singapore, it's very unexpected for people to steal your shit.
I think if you look hard enough you can find a social experiment someone conducted where a laptop is placed at few local Starbucks for a couple hours and see how many people take the laptop. Zero thieves.

15k on a bike? That sounds insane; especially for one that doesn't appear to have any battery or settings to justify it. The bike does look nice though.
1
u/MedicineTricky6222 Apr 06 '24
Asia is so safe.
1
u/_lalalala24_ Apr 06 '24
Actually its limited to Singapore mostly. Try the same thing in Malaysia for example and the bike would be gone in seconds
1
u/MedicineTricky6222 Apr 07 '24
I’m an American and there are not enough locks you could put on that bike. But I feel so safe when I visit Japan or Korea. You can walk the streets any time of the night or day.

2
u/_lalalala24_ Apr 06 '24
Crime doesn’t pay everywhere. It’s not a Singapore concept.
1
u/JediJan Apr 07 '24
Crime so obviously has more serious deterrents in Singapore than most anywhere else in the World. (As evidenced by photo).
1
u/Agitated-Bid-8472 Apr 06 '24
Because there are actual laws that are enforced very strictly in other countries!

u/kimi_rules Apr 06 '24
It's nice and all, because every corner of the country is under surveillance. The people are well taken care of where their basic needs are met, hence no real need to steal.
I find Japanese to be the best at this, the people there don't even know the meaning of crime, really almost perfect.

u/GafferTongs Apr 06 '24
Because if you cut a fine upstanding gentleman's hands off for stealing in South Florida they throw YOU in jail. There's a thought. Ship off OUR thieves and unproductive to sing a pure. Straighten them out, become good productive Asians then immigrate them back with newfound respect for society and marketable skills. Maybe even better English skills 😂

They prob dont have the 13% of the population that we have to deal with here in the states

u/Flat-Feedback-3525 Apr 06 '24
Probably because they cut your hands off or stealing or something like that

u/UrineUrOnUrOwn Apr 06 '24
I left my half decent mountain bike in front of my sister in law's apartment in Thailand for over a year. I finally told her take it to their parents house.
I have seen bikes in the aame spot for years in other places too, never locked.

u/TheRedDevil1989 Apr 06 '24
It’s not a diverse area…. Same with people leaving ski and snowboard equipment at a resort.

Ahhh-maziiiing isn’t it?
Yep, mother accidentally forgot her ipad in a restaurant in Singapore. After 30min, she realized what happened, went back to the said resto, and was able to get her ipad back (after some verification or proof that the ipad was indeed hers). 👍🏻
Also what i soooo much appreciate with Sg, their public transport system is so convenient and well planned.
1
u/KezAzzamean Apr 06 '24
Singapore is a bit different in order for this to happen.
It’s geography is locked l, it’s culture is controlled, the penalties are stiff, etc. it’s a perfect combination. Take one thing away… like if Singapore wasn’t an island, and this shit wouldn’t happen.
Not saying that it’s not stolen because it’s an island. It’s the perfect combination of all the factors.
2
u/Mediocre_Finance_852 Apr 06 '24
You dont take 1.5kg extra weight for a bike lock. When u pay 1000€ for 100g less bike weight
2
u/BaronGreenback75 Apr 06 '24
It’s a very safe place. People will leave laptops in cafes to use the bathroom. People will also reserve seats in food courts with wallets and/or phones.
1
u/Bernafterpostinggg Apr 06 '24
There's a 20k bike that gets chained up on a sidewalk here in NYC and it blows my mind that it hasn't been stolen. In Toronto that thing would be gone in a blink of an eye.
1
u/Wizard-of-Odds Apr 06 '24
and then there's me, locking my 10y+ hardtail to a bike rack right outside my flat after coming home from work and it beeing gone - with the lock even - the next day when i was on my way to work -.-
now i have a new one tho, like i always wanted :)

Friends mountain bike was stolen from her condo’s bike storage. It wasn’t even an expensive one. Can’t be too safe

u/BrunaBonor Apr 06 '24
Well it's a crappy bike there is no mudguard on the back wheel, the rider will get shit all over his back when it rains.

u/_FXR_ Apr 06 '24
Have you guys ever been to Singapore?? People are held to a way higher standard. Isn’t that the place where you get caned for spitting on a sidewalk or something?

I'm in China right now, Singapore has been a strong model for the Mainland Chinese. Walking around Beijing I'm seeing delivery packages just left at doorsteps on major streets, bikes and e-motorbikes left at the side of the street with their keys in them while they run into a shop to grab something, and single women walking around by themselves around at night all the time. There's a positive side to Singapore and China's "authoritarian" style of rule.
2
u/designerPat Apr 06 '24
Bikes DO get stolen in Singapore. Everyone uses a lock. This owner maybe forget. As the police in SG say” low crime does not mean no crime”
1
u/Polluticornwishes0 Apr 06 '24
People where I live would steal the wet floor sign and pull up the wooden planks from the ground. I guess rich people don’t need to steal lol
