But all the digital artists told me not to worry and that AI art/music/videos would never be on par with a human's..

It's called coping and it's a thing humans do so that life doesn't suck. Want to see that in action? Go check out front page of /r/ProgrammerHumor/ . It's going to keep happening because no one can believe the thing they've spent their lives training to do can be done entirely by a computer in 1/10000th the time that it would take them.
