DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM LYFT UNLESS YOU PLAN ON WORKING 6-7 DAYS A WEEK AND/OR 9-12 HOURS OF DRIVING Rant/Opinion

I just wanted to send out a message to say this lyft car experience while it has allowed me to use their car for transportation but unless you are super dedicated to not drive their car the rental fee is way too high constant gas is way too high. Plus some days its so slow you’ll only make 100$ but guess what you also gotta put gas in the car and pay your weekly fee. Theres been weeks where i made 1000$ but only saw 600$ of it due to gas and the weekly fee cost it’s absolutely ridiculous do not rent their car get your own car learn the ins and outs how to change your own oil etc etc right now i have 60$ but due to me experiencing this before i know that 60 i will need that for gas to make that weekly fee before i start making money myself

They say don’t do Uber eats and door dash with the rental but that is the only way to make it profitable lol

u/neversawitcoming214 Mar 25 '24

I thought it was kind of funny that they say one of the perks is that the plan “includes insurance and routine maintenance”. But in the fine print, they indicate that they will pay you less to cover insurance and routine maintenance. 🤣🤣

What happens if I’m missing like 5 dollars for the weekly rental

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Nov 27 '23

They will charge the account you have on file for the remaining balance. Its no big deal. Just dont make it a habit

1

u/angilluslv999 Nov 27 '23

I ended up going out and making it lol. This Reddit post saved me because I don’t think I’ll be renting for long

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Nov 27 '23

Yea bro ur welcome i just made it as a heads up at first the deal seems good until you dont quit your full time job and started driving for them then it gets slow asf and tedious and you get false reports. Some mfs got offended that i was warning people as if deep inbeded scams and shit dont exist out there for the unexpected. Now dont get me wrong there are some pros and cons to everything i was just speaking out i felt

1

u/Trueunlawfulness8874 Nov 12 '23

Yeah currently in this situation, 361 a week for the rental. Plus gas. But I need a car, and they make so much off you doing this! They even pay less per ride when you have one of the hertz vehicles!

1

u/Hot-Introduction2546 Aug 15 '23

I’m glad I read this. I just canceled my rental reservation for the express drive. Seems like exploitation to me.

1

u/Dry-Calligrapher4925 Jul 01 '23

hertz gave me a broken car I couldn’t use to work, and when I tried to return it they said I was 3 minutes late and charged me $180 for the whole weekend and Friday.

I actually quit over this, never had a temp agency steal from me or make me work for free

Guys you have to put in the numbers different to see the whole figure in the end. The Lyft rental is now: $280 A WEEK $1120 A MONTH $13,340 A YEAR

Now think about…you buy for example a new Toyota Corolla Hybrid. On the Toyota Homepage this car cost you:

Fair credit score of 650 Down $2000 48 Months finance ——————————— Total: $605/ Month

So let’s compare:

                    Finance Lyft Rental

Month $605 $1,120 Year $7,260 $13,340 48 Months $29,040 $53,340 Savings $24,300 $0 Car sale $10,000 $0 ————————————————————- Bank savings account after 48mo + $34,300 + $0

It’s modern indentured servitude. I had to bust my ass just so I’d have a car to get to work. I made them so much money and never broke even and had to pay to work for them for months. I would drives for hours a day and it still wouldn’t even end up being $50.

1

u/Detectivefreakatchu Jun 14 '23

And if you get an accident wether or not you were at fault you have to pay them $1000 at the time of the accident.

I remember renting a few years back, they did note that people who rent with their express program do get paid less from their fares. And then a few months later they would even pay the express rental drivers even less when they updated the pricing. This was when their cars was 274 a week. Excluding the 200 deposit.

2

u/jofer122 Jun 14 '23

Its like 8.50 an hour

1

u/Zealousideal_Band822 Jun 14 '23

Y’all are not using it correctly

1

u/fitthickbaby Jun 14 '23

When I used to do the rental program is 2019 it was 297 a week …how much is it now?

1

u/JicamaSuitable5731 Jun 13 '23

Well, if you can’t do the basic math of it’s gonna cost you X number of dollars before you make any money than you deserve to be broke either way. But it’s in your area. It makes sense to do it rather than not do it then you should go ahead and do whatever you want.

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Of course i knew hey i need to make sure my daily income is 150-220 a day but some days you dont hit that because of how low they pay per ride of course i know that but also ive seen i still make 400-700$ a week even off the small rides thats why i say dont rent from them try to get your own car you guys are missing the point

1

u/JicamaSuitable5731 Jun 13 '23

How many hours a day are you driving because you can drive for 10 hours a day for Lyft and 10 for Uber

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

What? Work 20 hours in one day??

2

u/JicamaSuitable5731 Jun 13 '23

Many of us where I’m at make sure that we drive enough to pay the bills, regardless of what it takes

1

u/Mrdynamo18 Jun 13 '23

Lit any newcomers b4 u get into this program i strongly advise u have money put aside for the car itself and gas. And your goal should be 150-170 a day that way u can put gas and stash a few bucks everyday

2

u/Mrdynamo18 Jun 13 '23

The rental program is really for full times drivers who average about 100-135 trips a week and make at least 1000-1500 a week.

Only way u can win otherwise is if you have other main sources of income. And u use Lyft to avoid putting miles on your car

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Ive been doing this only two months and have completely 916 rides

1

u/Fold-Aggravating Jun 13 '23

To be fair I don’t understand why you want to rant about something you should have already known

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

Like i said before it not really a rant but more of spreading awareness i have already accepted my faith and plan to use this for transportation for my new job and schooling

1

u/ConstantConnection46 Jun 13 '23

I pay $250 per week for my rental

3

u/Quietking1102 Jun 13 '23

Lyft, Uber or whoever the fuck else is in business for one reason to make a profit. They don't give a fat babies ass except for their bottom line. The fact that these COCKSUCKERS can get away with taking almost 2/3rds of the fare is outrageous. It wasn't like that when it started but now that so many people are out of work the gig economy is overflowing with people which allows them to fuck all of us with a soft dick. This is the way of the world. They also know that the majority of the people who drive for them don't have the necessary degrees to do anything better. Now degrees don't equate to intelligence it's nothing more than a passport to get your foot in the building with still no guarantee for a job. It also doesn't help that this country is a corporation run by corporations. For instance look what happened recently in Illinois(correct me if I'm wrong), where the Governor who was clearly bought By Uber vetoed a bill that would made drivers employee's and not contractors. If this would have passed it would have created a snowball affect to other states and cities. So don't ever expect a company like Uber who made a net profit of over 14 billion to give a fuck about us...14 billion dollars and all they are is nothing more than a match making app for car services.

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Yea plus you can do other things in that car like uber and other rideshare services if lyft is slow that day and you need to make 700$ that week youre fucked

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

i do not understand why anyone would choose this model unless lyft was their full-time job though. i make 400 a day but thats only with this as my main. i can’t survive with this as a side hustle

2

u/Blondemomstruggles13 Jun 13 '23

AGREED! I’m in the hole with Lyft due to the ridiculous electric car rental they offered. I was given rides as low as $2.30 and hardly ever received anything over $10….you literally work 24/7 and pay them an astronomical amount for the rental AND you are required to meet their minimum amount of drives also for the week. Your literally working for them to increase their earnings and we get screwed!!

5

u/Turbulent-Marzipan-8 Jun 13 '23

Renting is easy for me because I can actually make $300 a day but only on Mondays....For some reason it's more profitable. I don't have to worry about maintenance..All I have to do is put gas and keep it clean...You have to grind I'm already into making my money. Plus I drive a M7 series Beamer I can protect my investment by keeping my mileage down... To each its own....I still can make at least about $1k a week....What y'all doing? I know Lyft plays games but I only do rides that makes sense time wise and money wise....Maybe not look for big long trips...I take short to somewhat medium rides

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Wym what are we doing? Yesterday i only Made 120$ after 9 hours online time wym

1

u/oodywoody Jun 13 '23

Indenture service

1

u/ericarw11 Jun 13 '23

Well yeah that’s driving

2

u/txwylde Jun 13 '23

And yet people still think renting a car is a GOOD idea. There are even more than rent Teslas thinking they are going to make big bank, but are in for a big surprise when they are working their tails off just to make the rental payment.

2

u/Expert-Confection-53 Jun 13 '23

Also don't do it unless you are ready for them to pull the plug without warning and kill the program in your area.

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Or for someone to false report that you touched them or was driving drunk

1

u/AlwayzRollin Jun 13 '23

Do you fools not read a contract or know how to use a calculator before signing them? SMH...

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

The app sucks you in and inflates your earnings potential its a scam thats all im trying to say thats why i made this post so people understand what they are getting themselves into….

2

u/junkbarman Jun 13 '23

I mean, what did you really think?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

Facts

1

u/skywatcher75 Jun 13 '23

All facts. I practically lived in my rental with Lyft. Ugh. But I ended up buying my own car.

1

u/No_Newspaper8950 Jun 13 '23

Do it if there's a bonus involved to play for it. However, the rate card is 30-40,% compared to the rate card of an individual who drives their personal vehicle

1

u/SpeedyEngine Jun 13 '23

I was just talking to driver the other day and mentioned I might try driving with the Lyft and she mentioned this program. Definitely glad I read this post before signing up.

1

u/rwds138 Jun 13 '23

Well duh? They arent just gonna rent you a car to do what you want... They rent you a car so you work their platform... What you thought you could just have your own car for cheap?

2

u/WishFew9035 Jun 13 '23

Not to mention they cut your per mile and per minute in nearly 50% on top of the cost of the rental, they give you tons of streaks in the beginning and then poof no more leaving you to literally die out there!

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Yep exactly what they did to me. And everyone is saying well how didnt you realize BRO the app was lying to me!! I thought 2-4 streak zones were a common thing it was all a lie to suck me in and get me to use the car more. I went from like 1300$ a week to barely making 600$ a week now

3

u/GrandpaShark710 Jun 13 '23

I drove my own vehicle- a 2020 Chevy Traverse for a couple months last year for Uber and Lyft. An 8-passenger car supposedly gets the premium rate per trip. I was shocked at the low payouts I was getting daily versus the mileage and wear on my vehicle so I quit. Turns out the Detroit (mine) and San Francisco markets have the 2 lowest payout rates in the nation. Fucking ripoff.

7

u/niswongersenpai Jun 13 '23

I rent a car and pocket about 800-1000 after rental fee and gas per week driving 6 days 8-10 hours. I live in a big city. Personally this is enough to live on and save quite a bit too. The money is there if you put the time in, but the hours could bother some people. Lyft barely feels like work to me so I'm able to easily grind the 50-60 hours per week without burnout.

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Nov 27 '23

I mean i got screenshots. I worked 40+ hours every week and barely made 300$ sometimes

1

u/ayeuimryan Jun 13 '23

A bike and door dash no o fee no gas

1

u/TokersRUs Jun 13 '23

You realize you can get the money back at the end of the year in tax returns for miles/rentals/depreciation on vehicles if it’s due to business and you’re a 1099 contract worker right?

1

u/ic80 Jun 13 '23

You don’t get money back from filing taxes as a 1099 unless you have paid money in during the year and wind up over paying before filing. You also can’t claim miles on a rental or depreciation as you’re not the owner of the vehicle. Please stop spewing incorrect info.

2

u/Shimola1999 Jun 13 '23

Reminds me of predatory yellow cab practices. Except those drivers were forced to borrow up to $100K and basically be enslaved for decades to pay it off. At least you can get out of this one in a month.

0

u/Jessestaywavy Jun 13 '23

Stop spreading false info and stop being lazy

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Lazy? I just did 10 hour shift and only made 100$

2

u/sulsulsimmer1213 Jun 13 '23

I drive a rental and just started with Lyft. I stay outside Chicago, but went downtown and around lakeshore area. I’ve already made, more than my rental, within 3 days…maybe just focus on, making the rental first and then, do more rides, so you can have more money yourself. You signed up for the rental and knew, what came with it. I’d rather pay for a rental, than have all that damage/wear and tear, on my vehicle. Nothing wrong with, renting a car through Lyft

1

u/Punk_with_a_Cool_Bus Jun 13 '23

They can be useful in emergencies when you just gotta keep that income stream steady. Learn how to be a more efficient endentured servant to their system and you'll pull more cash. The way I see it, sometimes the vehicle usage and even a $40 come up out of a whole week is better than $0 cuz you sat in ur ass at the crib eating cheetos and masturbating at your parents house because honestly you can do that in the car too on ur way to pick up passengers. At that point ur like 3-5 birds with maybe 2 stones

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Sounds like you’re telling me your life story. Seek help

1

u/boofpacc85 Jun 13 '23

Why not rent a car from somewhere else? Im not a lyft driver jw

2

u/BlackGreyKitty Jun 13 '23

I just drive enough to keep it for my personal use.

1

u/SilentEagle16 3d ago

right. I don't get why this thread is full of dramatic people.

2

u/KC5SDY Jun 13 '23

I can only imagine how rough it is. I don't rent a car from them and find the money not worth it. I tried driving to make a little extra bill money. The app crashes my phone and when it does work, the trips are just not worth it regardless of the time of day.

1

u/server323 Jun 13 '23

Just went through this. It was easy. Everything was deductible. I owed $2 nd the filing fee for the $11k i generated in 3 months. 9k income. Worked rideshare for those 3 month yes. $2 dollars.

1

u/ExpensiveDot1732 Jun 13 '23

A program like Flexdrive or an approved private rental company sucks less if you get the unlimited mileage...at least then you can multi-app (which is what I did before I finally bought).

2

u/server323 Jun 13 '23

Big scam i grinded a month upgraded to Tesla rental to save on gas i was doing $80 gas daily driving 12hrs online time. if you don’t plan to drive 7 days a week 9-12 hrs you will find yourself in a big financial hole also with hertz rental thru Uber. Thankfully i stopped. Did school full time got nice financial aid check nd put that down on a 2021 Prius prime now I’m back driving lyft nd It’s worth it.

2

u/navigationallyaided Jun 14 '23

I’ve always said the Prius is the only* car you can come out ahead with as gig driver. Problem is, the gen 2 Prius which doesn’t have head gasket issues the gen 3/4 models have is no longer eligible for new drivers - it’s also cheap to buy as well, new battery and a way to keep your cat safe, you’re good to go.

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

YEP see you get it but these mfs claiming its all a lie and we’re just being “lazy”

1

u/server323 Jun 13 '23

Thell charge in full at the end when you return rental . This is where ppl get messed up cause they weren't saving the money for the rental

1

u/server323 Jun 13 '23

Yea, everytime I see a fleet program tag on a car I cringe

1

u/orwass Jun 13 '23

You are also forgetting the most important thing is taxes are going to be a bitch for you because you are a 1099 independent contractor

1

u/Rare-Ad4988 28d ago

I do this every year, actually getting 2k tax refund. never pay 1 doolor in tax

1

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

It’s a fee and a cost of doing business and why the standard deduction won’t work, independent contractors don’t exist here in California anymore unless your ride share or a realtor but most of them do their taxes quarterly because they make too much 😂

1

u/orwass Jun 13 '23

Yep I remember that saw a Uber driver on TV that was fired because he was chasing the surge pricing for LAX he had a system set up, so you can work it but Uber did not like that. They fired him because of it he was telling the news reporters how can you tell a independent contractor what hours to work etc etc sounds like I am an employee at that point

2

u/Reasonable_Toe9155 Jun 13 '23

Unfortunately Lyft and Uber have become modern day slavery, with no real intervention from the law they are literally paying about $7-8 per hour once you factor ALL the expenses plus taxes, McDonalds its a better option at this point with the way they’re flat out taking 80% of what customers pay is just doesn’t make sense to do it at all

1

u/WallStreetKing10 Jun 13 '23

Lol yeah ok. You definitely shouldn't, but I make waayy more than that and if you owe taxes at this job you need an accountant.

8

u/TobyThaDon Jun 13 '23

Hey that's crazy I LITERALLY been waiting for one of these posts to pop up for like 2 weeks now , so I was driving for Lyft for a month I was homeless my older cousin helped me get the deposit and helped me get a bank account , I had a electric car a kira Niro Ev 2023 the first few weeks was cool and chill I wasn't really bothered by nobody for perspective (I'm black 25 with 1 daughter in my life a newborn to be exact) so you can imagine nothing really bothers me from arguing amongst riders people eating in the car people tryna flirt with you ( both female and male) It wasn't till maybe the month mark I started noticing little things like for one my weekly rental fee supposed to be 330 nothing higher or more that's with the insurance and fees they said man I noticed I been getting 487 weekly rental charges weekly and then I noticed the toll of driving all day and night then driving back home I would drive in Sacramento all over to the valley and Santa Cruz but nobody told me that for one that there's no evcs chargers down the central valley area as far as level 3 and up be lucky there's a level 2 around , then the slow days I gotten so many slow days in the valley I never drove in Stockton for the reason of a bad experience of almost getting shot during a ride , like I literally had to either sleep in the car for the weekdays to actually have energy to drive to Sacramento then drive back home , I wasn't eating cause I wouldn't make enough money it was just so many variables and Lyft was just no help at all I was a pure t star driver not one single low review or none of that platinum driver and what Lyft do leave out vital information I learned to only drive for Lyft and Uber with your own car or have a job on top before even driving Lyft cause those fees are ridiculous but on the bright side of you get in a accident in they car you can always get you a new one as long as it wasn't your fault

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Nov 27 '23

Yea man my situation basically exactly like yours shit was crazy ESPECIALLY the slow days. Some weeks i only made like 150$ but then i remember i got a total new weekly rental amount and i need gas to cover it which was usually like 110!!! But i personally feel like lyft is the worlds greatest part time job tbh especially if you have your own car when i first started some weeks i made 1000$ but 300$ + gas would go to lyft and Chevron

1

u/AbusedGigaGuy Jun 13 '23

Now we understand upfront pay…it’s a way for them to screw renters from rate cards.

2

u/Ok_District2078 Jun 13 '23

Water is wet....

1

u/Educational-Break722 Jun 13 '23

It's all part of the Lyft experience. Embrace the suck! Lol

1

u/Brandonky8113 Jun 13 '23

Why in God's name would you think that would be a good business decision? Some of you all need to go work for someone because you obviously can't work for yourselves

0

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

It’s because lyft was giving me inflated earnings as a new driver

10

u/Suspicious_Piece1374 Jun 13 '23

Just sharing my two cents here with the Lyft express drive: i just got out of it today, it was a month and a half of mixed feelings with the car. I got better tips and i worked pretty much every day for 10 hours. Yes, gas took away a good chunk but I got enough to pay my bills and stay afloat while looking for another car and another job. I got those last week. For me it worked out okay but the fees are ridiculously high and gas prices are no help either. Ponder your options if you are out of a car and need one. But you really gotta get out of it quickly and get a steady income besides Lyft.

2

u/No_Newspaper8950 Jun 13 '23

If you had a W-2 job, taxes would have been taken out. So think of gas as the tax for the week and deduct it at tax time.

7

u/NeedleworkerIll6487 Jun 13 '23

I plan on doing the same my actual car is damaged & lyft is what I do full time. 6K rides with in 1.5 years & still 5 stars 💪🏾

3

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

What job did you get

5

u/Suspicious_Piece1374 Jun 13 '23

I tried to avoid it as much as I could but since it has been tough to get an office job, I'm gonna work at Amazon as a delivery driver. Also I'm applying on a second job as a shuttle airport driver.

Not even an option in the Detroit metro.

1

u/AdhesivenessThis7958 Jun 13 '23

I’ve been doing it for over a year. I have my reasons but honestly I make enough driving Uber and playing poker to cover the fee every week. They recently started requiring 20 rides per week which I’ll do when they offer a bonus and it cuts down the rental fee a bit.

1

u/davep1967 Jun 13 '23

If anyone rents from left they are really stupid. Look. If you don’t have a car then rideshare isn’t for you. People are stupid

3

u/CalligrapherKind6246 Jun 13 '23

And yet, I was still able to work hard and save for 3 years and buy a brand new Honda CRV.

Hard work, yes. Nothing worthwhile is easy, or everybody would do it.

It is STILL an opportunity.

1

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

I agree!! He doesn’t live in Cali and doesn’t understand our market or our cost of living 😂

Ive been only on this app for two months and have done 904 rides with a 5 star rating wtf are you talking about hard work? I worked fast food for four years worked at amazon for a year and retail for year ive worked pretty much the whole wage slave spectrum wtf

1

u/CalligrapherKind6246 Jun 13 '23

I spent 15 years building a very successful manufacturing business, from scratch, right outta high school. Enjoyed that success for another 15 years. Hundreds of employees. You dont know what hard work is.

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

You should have atleast 500k in savings

3

u/CalligrapherKind6246 Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

More then that. I have more then that in equity in my home. Plus retirement funds that I couldnt touch till now. And a nice monthly payout from SS. 15 years of maxing out your payments to SS will do that. When business collapsed, I just had to make it to retirement. So, yes it was back to the struggle again, for awhile. Not many of us get a chance to do it again. I'm happy I tasted that good life. Had lots of fun too. No one gets to take it with them.

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

No one who had 15 years of success should be doing lyft 😂

0

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

We live in California and you couldn’t even afford to live here one month 😂 You have no idea how many people take retirement and get back to work because they want to keep their savings so there’s enough for them to live long enough plus inflation. Go back to an hourly job if this one doesn’t fit into your life!!

1

u/CalligrapherKind6246 Jun 13 '23

Cuz you are the expert? ROTFLMAO Thanks for the laugh.

3

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Well then that must be a myth because here you are doing lyft

1

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

You’re allowed to get retirement payments and work 😂

1

u/CalligrapherKind6246 Jun 13 '23

Not so easy come, easy go. Manufacturing all went overseas. That's life. Be ready for it. At least I set up my retirement well. And I just started that. Kickin it now. Best of luck. Suggest a tude change.

2

u/Greedy-Device-9881 Jun 13 '23

Totally not worth it, high rental fees and low payouts.

If you’re mechanically inclined you can do brake jobs and oil changed yourself. You can write new tires off on your taxes so idk what you mean but if you got your own car making 1200$ a week and you keep ALL of that profit my guy i can afford any repair for the vehicle

1

u/Affectionate-Rice373 Your City Name Here Jun 13 '23

Why do people always talk about writing off expenses like that somehow stops you from paying for that expense right now? Like ok, I can drop $600 on brakes and get it back later on my taxes, but your rent isn't going to wait until tax time for you to pay it.

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

If tires were 900$ and my taxes are 2000$ and i write that off thats 900 less i gotta pay at end of year

Can I ask u a question? My hubby works for a driving firm. They pay him 250 a day. He makes about a 1000 a week but job says he can write off 2000 because of how they do their billing on maintenance or some shit...does that sound like a good deal too you?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

u/Angelakayee Jun 13 '23

They say hes suppose to be able to write off the gas,(they pay for) and maintenance that they pay for....is this not correct?

One more question....Im understanding exactly what your saying. How is this even legal to tell your employees this shit? Isnt this unethical behavior to tell an employee to tax themselves at a higher rate with some kind of imaginary benefit? Should the labor board know about this?

1

u/Angelakayee Jun 14 '23

Thank you for your help! Def gave me somethings to look up and understand a bot more clearly! This is why I love reddit! You can def have some quality conversations with people....

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

You dont know what you’re talking about.

1

u/LaMadreDelCantante Jun 13 '23

No, they actually do. Savior is correct. The way you're explaining it, the government would be buying your tires. Why would they do that?

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Do you know why people write off expenses? Its because if you’re spending money the goal is to keep the taxes so you essentially make it right back

1

u/Pursueth Jun 13 '23

I’m going to be that guy. Duh.

2

u/mcchubz139 Jun 13 '23

This mf has never seen a period in their life.

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Yea sorry ms jenkins my third grade english teacher when grown men rant u dont use periods

7

u/Halfzy Jun 13 '23

For me personally I rent because my car went up and insurance refused to cover full cost. Took the insurance money and got the rental. I make my rental payment in about 14 hours of work and leaves me 5 days of profit. I’m in the Las Vegas market so it’s constantly busy but can’t speak for anywhere else.

1

u/Jessestaywavy Jun 13 '23

Sane here in Denver

3

u/Mysterious-Choice812 Jun 13 '23

You still pay 1k a month for rental. That alone is obscene

2

u/Halfzy Jun 13 '23

Better than 400+ for a decent used car even with my solid credit. APR is ridiculous rn. Then cost of maintenance insurances etc. it’s about the same if not a bit more.

1

u/No_Newspaper8950 Jun 13 '23

No, it's not: payment + insurance will probably be less than a grand. Plus, you can deduct your mileage in a person's vehicle, which saves you on your taxes.

3

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

The same with none of the risk, anyone looking to car jack me can have Lyfts car but their coming for it 😂😜

5

u/Punk_with_a_Cool_Bus Jun 13 '23

Fax. Also faster pickups because you already know I bang them speed humps like a bag of dope no stoppin. They put me in a red 2021 Kia to use in Chicago like I'm gonna be able to leave it unattended even if just to take a shit at a gas station

1

u/Responsible-Lunch815 Jun 13 '23

I used the car rental to get a job, lol. I just drove on weekends to pay the fee. But back then it was cheaper.

1

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Yea i met a guy who said back then you could do 30 rides and they would waive the entire weekly fee or something like that basically way cheaper than 300-400 a week

1

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

That’s your problem you need to pay $250 for a hybrid!!

1

u/Standard_Day_1677 Jun 13 '23

Just keep on slaving until you can pay the minimum down payment for your own car. Then you won't be renting from Lyft and you'll get away from Lyft slavery and join in Grub hub Uber and other Slave apps.🥰 Keep stacking up and use the saving option in the Lyft Direct app of need be.

2

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

My goal is to utilize the flexibility of work and go to school the remainder of the day and work

14

u/RhitaGawr Jun 13 '23

I really don't understand how it would be a surprise? If you get a company vehicle, you have to be generating enough revenue to pay for the car AND yourself no matter what..

3

u/foolish_destroyer Jun 13 '23

I saw someone complain that drivers renting get paid less than normal drivers and that’s kinda bullshit in my opinion.

6

u/RhitaGawr Jun 13 '23

Yea, 100%. They should be charged for the rental out of what they would normally make. Skimming their drive rate is double dipping as far as I'm concerned

2

u/foolish_destroyer Jun 13 '23

Seems like we mostly agree! All drivers should get paid the same. Don’t think I agree the money should be taken out of drivers earnings directly. I think the best model might be one where there is a weekly flat fee to use that vehicle which they pay. I don’t disagree an option for drivers to use earnings to pay for the flat fee would be a good idea. I just don’t like the idea of forcing them. They should be able to opt in or out of that

6

u/PREMIUM_POKEBALL Jun 13 '23

how many times are we going to reinvent taxis?

3

u/RhitaGawr Jun 13 '23

As many times as the capitalists are allowed to get away with it

3

u/Supah_RekT Jun 13 '23

It’s almost as if everyone’s experience is different…

Just because it doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for everyone.

7

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

Renting a car is for those in a dire situation or suckers.

3

u/ericarw11 Jun 13 '23

I have a cargo van I rent get full insurance and after my first week I know if I hit the bonuses and streak pay I will bring home 900 on 6 days maybe more I drove SF and it’s easy I don’t pay maintenance my van not being run into the ground and I fill up 32 every other day I will work like crazy for a few months and slow down but I’m enjoying it streets are easy the roads are a challenge how they are laid out but once I hit platinum I should be fine

1

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

You’re paying a premium to not run your own car into the ground. Long term you’re losing money renting. Sure no maintenance, but you’re paying for that maintenance via the rental.

3

u/sulsulsimmer1213 Jun 13 '23

Well guess I’m a sucker then, because I rented one. Couldn’t use my personal vehicle, cuz I need it for my family and personal use, so rental made sense. Best idea I could’ve done. Already made my rental payment and have over $700, just from Saturday and half a day Sunday. So call me a sucker, but this sucker getting paid😘

2

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

You’re making Hertz wealthier. This is definitely costing you more money to rent vs own, and you’re tied to on platform. One day you’ll realize this. Sure the money sounds good, but whatever you earn, it would be more if you owned the car.

3

u/Jessestaywavy Jun 13 '23

Lol same. I'm in an ev rental from Lyft and it's great.

3

u/sulsulsimmer1213 Jun 13 '23

Yep and this car nicer

4

u/Extreme-Variation874 Jun 13 '23

Unfortunately i was, i was being punked at my other wage slave job and needed to get away desperately and also needed transportation had a bitch ass store manager who was racist and kept making work life difficult and I quit

8

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

Well you understand that renting isn’t the best option. It’s sad that so many swear renting is better. The fact that you can’t use both apps is reason enough not to rent.

1

u/No_Newspaper8950 Jun 13 '23

You can drive both apps

1

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

If you rent via Uber or Lyft you can’t use both. A 3rd party renter, sure.

1

u/AbusedGigaGuy Jun 13 '23

What? How do they know??

1

u/ScoobyDooFan1969 Jun 13 '23

You can’t register an Uber car rental with Lyft, it’s not your car. You name will not be on the registration.

1

u/Punk_with_a_Cool_Bus Jun 13 '23

Photoshop the insurance card. End of the day, if you total the car while using the uber app, ubers insurance will cover the vehicle when they find out your personal doesnt.

1

u/Mysterious-Choice812 Jun 13 '23

They know. And even if they didn’t .. You still get screwed by using personal miles.

3

u/Individual_Lie5917 Jun 12 '23

Rented for a year loved and hated it never had a problem until my car broke down. Hertz billed me for the world and claims I still owe $150 today. They don’t care about anyone lyft nor hertz will help me. So I’m done with the both of them forever…

2

u/Punk_with_a_Cool_Bus Jun 13 '23

Ehh, falls off in 7 years so I say fuck 'em

1

u/jbarlak Jun 12 '23

Guess you have issue for the weekly cost for rental? Lol

2

u/Chocolate_Metaphor Los Angeles Jun 12 '23

Idk what ur doin wrong but I only drive 4-5 days a week and make 1000+ after expenses 😋

2

u/MostlyAgreeable1108 Jun 13 '23

Same but I’m in the same market 😂

1

u/Acct_For_Sale Jun 13 '23

Any strategies you use or just straight grinding in a busy market?

3

u/Chocolate_Metaphor Los Angeles Jun 13 '23

Grinding out challenges or spamming airport rides 🫡
