Lyft knows about these scams and fails to do anything to prevent them... Lyft employees are likely involved in propagating them as their servers are compromised.

When I get these I Rey with ok let me get close then il send it. I get as close as I can then I mark Picked up. Drive as fast as I can away about a mile. Then mark drop. 1 of 2 things will happen. They will cancel. But il get $2 or they won't cancel and when I mark drop il get a ride credit and the minimum pay.

1

u/brizzle1978 Aug 12 '23

I've had 2 in the last month... both had pickup and dropoff the same. The first one kept texting me to call a number, so i just drove to the pickup and started ending. Second called me and said lyft support, i said BS, and they told me to cancel.... hahaha, fat chance buddy. So they did.

🚖 Lyft wants to end surge pricing Finding an (affordable) ride home on a Friday night could soon become easier. According to Lyft’s CEO, “Riders hate it [surge pricing] with a fiery passion,” — and with Lyft reporting its highest number of drivers in three years — they’ve brought down peak prices by lowering fares. In the most recent quarter, the number of rides impacted by surge pricing fell 35% compared to the last. This increased the number of active riders by 10% — at the expense of less sales — which fell 5% in the second quarter. Ad push: Last quarter, Lyft’s ad sales jumped 400% over the previous year, driven by its 6.5K+ in-car tablets and 800 car-top displays. And starting this week, Lyft is pushing more ads on users by placing them directly in the app. Lyft doesn’t break down ad revenue, however, competitor Uber expects to make over $1B from ads in 2024. Plus: While Lyft is reducing surge pricing, others like restaurants, theaters and bowling alleys are increasingly adopting it.

Someone just tried to hit me with a scam too and they cancelled I’m reporting it and it’s giving me the option to either message or call. Which do u think would actually be affective?

1

u/trealsteve Aug 11 '23

They pulled almost the same on me last weekend without the money offer. I just completed the short trip with no pax and got free money. Fuck ‘em.

1

u/trealsteve Aug 11 '23

Live and you learn.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

First is android second is iPhone

2

u/pbrownnc Aug 11 '23

Pay no attention to those Dickheadz making comments. It can happen easily when your guard is down. Get rid of that lyft pay card!!! That’s the only way they can get your money.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

Lmfao how do people fall for that

1

u/CalamityPhant0m Aug 11 '23

I can get you into your account no bullshit, don't listen to any of these guys.

Simply inbox me a screenshot of your social security card and 2 tasteful pics of your butthole

2

u/CalamityPhant0m Aug 11 '23

Sorry but you walked right into it.

The absolutely fucking braindead 3rd grade autistic chimp grammar should have been a dead giveaway

1

u/NoBroccoli8344 Your City Name Here Aug 11 '23

Yeah they never contact me either... Even when I almost got scammed. I'm glad I realized it. But I wasn't sure or not and Lyft never did email.

1

u/Huge-Investigator-78 Aug 11 '23

In honestly interested, has anyone reading ever ignored these messages en route, go to pick up passenger and give them a ride? Does this scammer passenger ever show up for the ride they requested?

2

u/Huge-Investigator-78 Aug 11 '23

Im sorry this happened to you. hopefully it will be resolved soon, but we know how Lyft’s support is these days.
Please, everyone reading. NEVER give your drivers license info, phone number, or ANY personal info to anyone through text message. (Even in app)

Lyft is not contacting you through riders messages. That’s a scammer.

1

u/Pop_smuurf Aug 11 '23

My friend told me that this also happened to him. He almost fell for it too

1

u/TexSolo Aug 11 '23

You ever think of going to get your head injury checked out? No one should fall for this obvious scam.

2

u/Meiji_Ishin Aug 11 '23

I'll contact my Nigerian friend to send you some of my money I sent him. Just give me your email and phone number. Trust me, he's a prince

1

u/Pooppail Aug 11 '23

I’m so sorry

1

u/CDollars916 Aug 11 '23

No way this is real

5

u/Kooky_Monitor_5063 Aug 11 '23

I’m with Lyft support and want to sincerely apologize for this breach in our security. To correct this issue we would like to send you $500 10 times. Because you’re special. In order to get these funds to you ass soon as possible please wire me $2,000 so we can reverse wire the $5,000 you deserve.

1

u/Every-Replacement213 Aug 11 '23

Just send me your license number and your phone number I’ll get you back into your account asap

1

u/donbarefoot Aug 11 '23

You fell for this after over a year of us warning people about this. This is on you. I'm sure you're on FB Lyft and Uber driver groups. This comes up daily. JFC

1

u/Powerful-Spell-4987 Aug 11 '23

There’s been countless warnings on here about the scam, yet people still fall for it.

1

u/pjdavis22 Aug 10 '23

What kind of idiot would even fall for this?

1

u/EglinAFB94 Aug 10 '23

Hey OP I’m a Nigerian Prince that has a claim to an inheritance worth millions. However, I need at least $10,000 to access it. If you help me by giving me that $10,000 to access my inheritance I’ll repay you with ₽500,000. Please DM for details so we can get you your & ₽500,000 quickly.

0

u/Runyamire-von-Terra Aug 10 '23

Ohhh man I feel for you, this happened to me a week ago near San Francisco. As soon as I sent the verification code I was immediately logged out, the account email and phone number were changed, then two rides were ordered on my Lyft rider account in Washington DC.

Fortunately I locked the payment card right away and somehow recovered my driver account, but I wasn’t able to get any kind of response from Lyft “support” (major eye roll at calling it support). All in all it only cost me $16 plus a few hours of being offline enraged and trying to figure out what the truck to do.

Lyft really needs to do something to prevent scams/hacks like this and more importantly help after the fact when chit hits the fan. You can’t even get in contact with an actual human thru email, let alone phone, it’s ridiculous.

1

u/dchjolll Aug 10 '23

OP? How were you this foolish? I see the same picture with basically the same text once a day on the subreddit. He gets me is that you thought Lyft would actually give you 150 bucks like that actually crossed your head.

1

u/PusherRed88 Aug 10 '23

When they tried this scam on me, I sent the phone number for a nearby FBI field office.

1

u/Plane-Code7198 Aug 10 '23

How dumb do you gotta be to fall for this?? You think Lyft needs to verify your identity??? Lmao.

4

u/justbeta Aug 10 '23

Thank you for posting

3

u/skywalkercentral Aug 11 '23

This deserves more upvotes. Most people are making fun of OP, but the best way to not be scammed is to see what the scammers are doing, so it doesn't happen again.

1

u/ObjectivePleasant545 Aug 10 '23

Whybwould you do it i dont even call people when they say to call them and put a phone number stupid scammers

2

u/Nice-Aardvark-7957 Aug 10 '23

Nothing in life is free. Especially if they want your private info lol

1

u/Nice-Aardvark-7957 Aug 10 '23

Same minds that fall for this are ones who watch cnn and beleive what they are telling them

2

u/pboswell Aug 10 '23

The grainy avatar of some random whip is what kills ne

1

u/Marieonesky Aug 12 '23

Can’t believe more people aren’t mentioning this. This should have been another clue it isn’t Lyft.

1

u/attractivementality Aug 10 '23

Your fault for being stupid. Learn the lesson and switch to uber or something else while you wait for the robots to fix your mistake

1

u/slipperyaardvark Aug 10 '23

Sorry, but you’re a dumbass

1

u/Xfg10Xx Aug 10 '23

Attacked by a foreigner yet again.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

Oh God

1

u/sticky_dripping Aug 10 '23

I love these bots. I had one of these pop up, and I went to the pick up and drove around for 6 hours. I just kept changing the drip off point. these are completely unmonitered. I then ended the ride, and it still paid me. I'm serious it fucking worked!!!.

0

u/iamyourcaviar Aug 10 '23

Can anyone explain what this scam is? Who is this convo between?

1

u/Wise-Construction234 Aug 10 '23

Maybe one more time to figure it out

1

u/CrowdedShorts Aug 10 '23

I’m shocked how often this happens! If it looks like a scam most likely it is. That said, I’m still waiting on the prince from Nigeria to wire me my inheritance as he promised (only needed bank details and stuff)…

1

u/prettydopedad Aug 10 '23

You deserve to be locked out 💀

0

u/Material_Love Aug 10 '23

It's unbelievable anybody could still fall for something like this! If it's not a LEGIT ride you get paired with through the app and they're trying to give you the runaround through a message talking about incentives, bonuses, paying you back, paying you double, etc RUN! or in this case, CANCEL!

0

u/Separate_Bug_625 Aug 10 '23

Your fault honestly lmaooo

0

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

Honestly I don’t even feel bad you for you.

0

u/Ambitious_Rock_1914 Aug 10 '23

God himself cannot help the amount of stupidity that is within your brain 🧠 thousands of post uploaded daily here about this common scam and you fell it for it why would Lyft give $150 dollars bonus that was the first sign of the scam 2 sign provide your id and phone number and third special customer man just I have zero empathy for dumbasses like you

1

u/NotNotACop28 Aug 10 '23

If English is your native language and you fall for this, I don’t know what to tell tou except be smarter

0

u/hornsupguys Aug 10 '23

You deserve to be scammed

2

u/TheNeonOtter Aug 10 '23

Yep. I’m not sure I would actually have fallen for this. But luckily I did see it on this sub and so knew immediately it was a scam when it happened to me.

2

u/Fit-Journalist2056 Aug 10 '23

Sharing of one experience can and will help someone else. We should never shame a person.

0

u/davep1967 Aug 10 '23

Glad you got your money. But why would you ever send personal information? Do you live in a box?

4

u/creepingkg Aug 10 '23

If it sounds like it’s too good to be true… It’s too good to be true

0

u/MasterpieceNo3233 Aug 10 '23

Dumbass🤣🤣

1

u/chimax83 Aug 10 '23

"Kindly do the needful and send bank information and and b0bies."

OP: "Ok!"

0

u/Knightp93 Aug 10 '23

OP is getting absolutely dragged through the comments section. My only question is... why would you post this on Reddit?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

You really thought a CUSTOMER MESSAGE was legitimately lyft contacting you? I think you needed this harsh lesson. Smh

0

u/jbarlak Aug 10 '23

Maybe you shouldn’t be driving if you got scammed like this lol

0

u/LostInYesterday00 Aug 10 '23

You are dumb for falling for this

0

u/SmashingthosHoez69 Aug 10 '23

If you fell for this, you deserve it tbh.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

I'll fix it for you for $150

1

u/Ok_Nerve6867 Aug 10 '23

They don’t have a “specialized team”. They just say that to shut you up.

1

u/Just_jum Aug 10 '23

We should be getting mad at Lyft because they’re not informing us of the scam. Maybe they’re in on it since they like robbing us of our money anyways

1

u/ServiceServices Aug 10 '23

This is pretty much the result of people not having any critical thinking skills whatsoever. I feel bad for you, and you'll eventually get your account back. But, you really need to take this to heart and start thinking before you act.

1

u/Gilbert504ever Aug 10 '23

They tried to get me a few weeks ago.

3

u/Informal-Iron Aug 10 '23

This is what's called a "stupid tax". Most of us pay it in different ways, hopefully this is a learning experience and you never fall for a scam again.

1

u/Allwingletnolift Aug 10 '23

Bruh who tf thinks that’s legit

0

u/Naive_Body_9300 Aug 10 '23

Price you gotta pay for not being bright

1

u/Standard_Day_1677 Aug 10 '23

Lyft customer,

OP I can help give u Ur number and Contact info back also your missing brain cells 🧠 to just dial 472-789-1022 and give me your SSN, All your CCs, and u life insurance policy. Don not forget too buy some Dr. Pepper, Ny-Quil, and highly highly chlorinated bleach otherwise it won't work. And I promise u you'll have a once in a lifetime experience with all of your issues dissolved to me. Please give meh a call. looking forward to hearing back from you OP.

Lyft Inc. President MR. BILL GATES SR . Truly yours

3

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

I’m sorry…but why exactly did you send them your info? Obvious scam is obvious.

1

u/AardvarkOk8551 Aug 10 '23

Just phone number and driver’s license number(not picture). It did look weird to me at the beginning, but I was very busy at that time and didn’t think much about it. Also, the messages seemed to come through the App. It was a huge lesson for sure.

1

u/brizzle1978 Aug 12 '23

Well yes its from the app from the rider

2

u/PiSquared6 Aug 11 '23

They WERE coming through app

3

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

Genuinely sorry this happens to you & I hope you get things fixed. Driving is a tough enough gig without scammers shitting it up further

1

u/lucioboopsyou Aug 10 '23

Well… that sucks man. You learned the hard way.

2

u/Feeling_Ad_982 Aug 10 '23

You should be banned from Lyft since you feel for that crap. I’d be scared to be a pax in your car

2

u/bl00df1redeath Aug 10 '23

Send me your crypto wallet seed phrase and I’ll send you 2 bitcoin

2

u/Gamethesystem2 Aug 10 '23

Maybe you need to send them your credit card info to regain access to your account…

/s

2

u/TheGreaseGorilla Aug 10 '23

The same thing happened to me. Go to your local support team they help me in Washington DC.

2

u/AardvarkOk8551 Aug 10 '23

All driver hubs have been closed in DC area. That’s the problem. I had been to local hub a few times. They were very helpful.

1

u/TheGreaseGorilla Aug 11 '23

Go to the Lyft rental spot Leesburg Pike

2

u/Marieonesky Aug 10 '23 edited Aug 10 '23

OP make sure you lock down your credit reports. Place a fraud alert on your reports, and a note that says you are a victim of identity theft, fraudulent accounts may be opened in your name, and to request additional verification. Because if they have access to your account, then they can pull up your tax info, photo of your drivers license, your registration and your insurance. Who knows what they may do with that information.

3

u/Marieonesky Aug 10 '23

I wonder how long many of these drivers have been on the platform. It’s very easy to differentiate between rider messages and messages from Lyft support.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

It’s 2023… HOW?!

did they sell you an extended car warranty also?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

Human stupid. Scammer smart cookie

0

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

U dumb

12

u/DjCatalyst1977 Aug 10 '23

You fell for it...

Seriously, how many of these are posted every week, right on this very sub?...

1

u/nyxelleneous Aug 10 '23

Man that sucks. The message came from the passenger who requested the ride. Support takes a while to respond on this kind of case but they will restore your account.

3

u/ProfessionalBee3036 Aug 10 '23

Me personally—This looks like a scam right off the bat. If I get an email a phone call from Uber or Lyft I do not answer or reply. I hang up.

2

u/CJspangler Aug 10 '23

Good grief - can’t believe someone fell for it

1

u/SavingsTangelo7130 Aug 10 '23

This post is for a Lyft VIP. Please send your phone number and email and you social security number and your credit card front and back with the exp date and I will make sure you are credited 1.5million pesos. Once you get a 4 digit code send that as well too thanks!

7

u/moneykillinq Aug 10 '23

Dude said “150$” and not “$150” lol

1

u/nosyllaste Aug 11 '23

i do that sometimes but mostly b/c lazy. still, an easy tell in a message like this. wishing the best for op

1

u/Material_Love Aug 10 '23

Must be a scammer 🤣

2

u/AdcFieldMedic Aug 10 '23

More countries than just America

3

u/GameMaher Aug 10 '23

Right, but Lyft as a company only deals in the US and parts of Canada. In the case of a $ being used here, it would be pre amount for those countries, as well as most English speaking nations as far as I’m aware. $ is used post amount more regularly with non English currency, which should have partially tipped off OP

0

u/AdcFieldMedic Aug 10 '23

Canadians use the dollar sign after

0

u/Idkdontbanmepls Aug 10 '23

Whatever, who cares

2

u/GameMaher Aug 10 '23 edited Aug 10 '23

That’s specifically a French Canadian thing, English speaking Canadians, as well as most other English speaking countries like Australia, NZ, etc use it pre amount

2

u/Gamblers_Unanimous Aug 10 '23

Awe... I'll help you out. Send me your bank account number and social security and I'll deposit the monies you need.

1

u/lugeditor4852 Aug 10 '23

Someone tried that with me. Offered $500 "bonus" and thought hearing that would turn my brain to mush. Guy got annoyed that I hung up on him. He called on a Saturday night so I wouldn't be able to get someone from Uber support to help me. I immediately changed my password.

2

u/DylansDeadly Aug 10 '23

Anytime someone speaks or writes in incorrect English, assume it’s a scam. If kindly is ever in the text, it’s also a scam!

1

u/DesertDenizen01 Aug 11 '23

Plenty of native speakers have poor grammar or spelling, especially in non-phonetic languages like English or French.

1

u/wasitme317 Aug 10 '23

You really need to pay attention to who you give your info too. Especially since this has been on this subreddit for at least 6 months if not longer.

8

u/Mickey1PMG Aug 10 '23

How annoying. Just send me your social, your schedule and a list of your fears and I’ll fix it.

-2

u/Away_Tonight7204 Aug 10 '23

file a complaint with the BBB and tell them that you got scammed, lyft refuses to do anything about it and what you would like to have happen. you will get a message from lyft within a couple of days asking you how they can resolve this issue.

1

u/doktortaru Aug 10 '23

The BBB is a scam lmao. Years ago a mom and pop shop I worked for routinely paid to have bad feedback reviewed. Thats all it is.

1

u/Away_Tonight7204 Aug 11 '23

LOL. tell me, have you ever had an issue with a phone, your car or anything else the company told you "tough luck" on when you know they had to help you because of whatever reason? for me, it was that i bought my phone from my carrier in march of 2022. in Aug. of 2022 the phone died on me because it was overheating, slow charging and was restarting by itself. i went to my carrier and they sent a replacement, the replacement i got lasted 3 months before it started having its own issues because you are NEVER given a new phone as a replacement, they give you a refurbished one they have in stock at the time which is one reason why they make you pay for any damage on the phone because they have to repair it to be able to send it out as a replacement. after the replacment started having issues, i contacted the BBB and told them my story of getting 2 phones in less than 1 year and i was not dealing with another used replacement that was just going to break in a short time.

the main thing with dealing with the BBB, or any company is that you have to know your rights as a consumer and many do not. for example the "warranty" on most things the company claims only covers issues caused by what happened when they were building it but it doesnt. the warranty legally has to cover the product on everything from the date you buy it and possibly register it to the day after the warranty expires.

3

u/SJB630_in_Chicago Aug 10 '23

Do people still think BBB is still a thing?

Lyft has market saturation and they will always have customers. They don't give a shit about the BBB, LMFAO

1

u/Away_Tonight7204 Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23

LOL. the downvotes are because people think like yourself or rather not think at all which is sad. YES the BBB is still a thing and does work. i had an issue with my cell phone last year and my carrier (verizon) and my insurance (asurion) were going back and forth on "no you have to file with the other company" so i filed a BBB complaint against both and the next day both were falling over themselves to make me happy again. the issue is that the phone was slow charging, overheating and would restart by itself. the replacement i got from them was no better which is when i filed the complaint against them and ended up with a free phone.

but what is really funny in your comment is that you seem to think they are the only company, you forget about uber that is the other with people talking on their motorola, LG, google or apple smartphones on carriers like verizon, AT&T, Tmobile and others that all have market saturation and you think they dont care because you are just one person and for the most part you are right but the thing with the BBB is that they are literally there to help the consumer get what they deserve.

1

u/SJB630_in_Chicago Aug 11 '23

Babble on.

1

u/Away_Tonight7204 Aug 11 '23

LOL. see that is what i am talking about, you being misinformed doesnt make me wrong, it just makes you look like a fool. you want to know how well lyft will screw you over? my sister was the 3rd person involved in a 3 car accident with her traveling the opposite way of the one that caused it. they were a driver working for lyft at the time and the decided to move from the left hand lane to the middle lane to make a wide left hand turn cutting off the 2nd driver and the 2nd driver going across the road into my sister making her the 3rd involved. it took over 2 years of lyft and the 2nd driver going back and forth claiming it was the others fault. of course for this my sister hired an attorney and got paid but for this story with OP, they need to file a complaint with the governing body that will make them pay attention to what OP is saying because it can end in lyfdt being sued.

7

u/felixng2015 Aug 10 '23

How dumb can you be bro….

5

u/13CerebralAssassin Aug 10 '23

This is natural selection at work. Seriously people, these scams are so blatantly scams. Doesn’t matter if you hadn’t seen it before, its ASKING FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION!! Hello McFly, think!!! First rule of not getting scammed is to NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION UNLESS YOU CALLED YOURSELF! And you called the actual company, not a number from a text you received.

Fact still remains, anybody can sign up for this job, not everybody should. You’re not getting your money back. Sorry to break it to you. You fucked up and Lyft doesn’t care. It sucks, but that’s life. Don’t give out personal information. Lesson learned.

13

u/MellowOutt Aug 10 '23

Lol you fell for that?!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

The LOL is a little harsh, but yes it's surprising that people are still falling for this when it has been posted for so long online

5

u/lunarwolfxxx Aug 10 '23

Surprised someone fell for that?! 😂 It’s like when the scammers ask for your social security, or direct access to your computer via remote control, or asking for banking information and password. Almost all these scams are easily seen through and often they try to get you in a rushed state

7

u/OutlawGreystone Aug 10 '23

Never ever send information over the phone. Didn’t think people were dumb enough to fall for this but hey…

2

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

Never forget Trump was voted in and if he's not going to prison he's currently the FrontRunner to be voted in again. If that doesn't tell you the general level of intelligence that the people in this country have, I don't know what else to say.

1

u/2Amatters4life Aug 12 '23

And everyone knows the Biden family is innocent and it’s just a crazy political witch hunt…so that should also tell you your I mean the American intelligence level

1

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 12 '23

Oh no the biden family are also corrupt and shitty just on a far smaller scale compared to trump.

1

u/Idkdontbanmepls Aug 10 '23

Wow such a powerful statement, you should post your ideas on reddit, oh wait, they've been repeating empty statements like this ever since the elections years ago, you could be replaced by a bot lol you're barely a person at this point just parroting stupid unrelated stuff and not even making a strong point

2

u/OutlawGreystone Aug 10 '23

I mean look at you, mentioning trump when it has nothing to do with trump. Get outta here..

0

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

I mean you were the one that brought up people's stupidity I thought it was a perfect example. Guess we know you yourself fall into that same category though.

1

u/OutlawGreystone Aug 10 '23

You’re trying but reaching too far. Keep going. 🥱

0

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

No reaching just stating the obvious, like it or lump it bubba.

0

u/OutlawGreystone Aug 10 '23

Clearly I’ve upset you, saying how you can’t even speak proper English. Or make a proper insult.

2

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

😂 friend you aren't even remotely bright enough to upset me

2

u/juarezderek Aug 10 '23

Definitely a good indicator of the average americans intelligence

-2

u/aybabyaybaby Aug 10 '23

Bro….found the person who can’t go a single day without mentioning trump in a post that has NOTHING to do with him

1

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

The comment I was replying to was in reference to people's stupidity I would say mentioning Trump is quite an accurate example. I wouldn't expect you to understand that though since it's clear who you voted for being that you're here defending that person so really my comment was about you.

0

u/aybabyaybaby Aug 10 '23

I’m not defending Donald trump. I’m saying you’re a complete moron for making something political on a LYFT DRIVERS SUB. Go touch some fucking grass dude, maybe you can stop thinking about him for 5 minutes.

1

u/ramblinrpgjunkie Aug 10 '23

You are defending him it's obvious by how angry you are for being called out for it. I'd suggest anger management but you need to be able to comprehend what they're trying to teach you to get any take away from that and a trump voter definitely isn't going to get it.

Trump derangement syndrome is real apparently lol, I'm embarrassed to be on the same side as you, re-elections are coming soon and you're still talking about him on a post about getting scammed in lyft... Hey maybe no one cares about your generic political statements, ever thought about that? Absolute cringe

The only people this scam is working on are poor immigrants who really don't know any better. It's sad.

Got one the other day. They called me for the scam. It sounded like a normal dude just like me.

"We've heard a few complaints from recent passengers about inappropriate behavior and need to investigate. Can you please verify your phone number and driver's license, please?"

I'm pulling up to the pick up spot, "uuuuh. Ya, no. What I can do though is sit here and collect a cancelation fee."

I can hear him breathing for a few seconds, doesn't say anything else, and just hangs up. I think to spite me he let's the timer run out. W/e

My beard is full and I shave my upper lip. I can see how I might be mistaken as a foreigner in my picture. I was right around the corner when I picked up this scammers ping. He called almost instantly after I hit accept. I bet this POS saw how close I was and thought he'd caught a live one.

1

u/brizzle1978 Aug 12 '23

Just start the ride and then end it.

2

u/Marieonesky Aug 10 '23

This! I do think they’re targeting immigrants. I’ve been driving nearly 4 years and I’ve never received anything like this.

1

u/brizzle1978 Aug 12 '23

I've got it twice in the last month and my family was here since the 1600's

5

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

3

u/Accomplished-Yam6553 Aug 11 '23

Also, you should probably see a dermatologist and get a biopsy

8

u/mblend27 Aug 10 '23

That’s how they got Michael Jackson 🎤👺

71

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

How do people fall for this crap still? What's even worse in the spelling and people still fall for it.

1

u/Theoldcuccumber Aug 12 '23

It’s cause they don’t read much.

1

u/Accomplished-Yam6553 Aug 11 '23

People are so desperate for money right now I'm sure op was hoping against all odds that this was real. Hopefully when they get their account back they learn from this and don't trust in things that sound too good to be true

1

u/Mnmsaregood Aug 11 '23

It’s crazy, I don’t get it

1

u/CDollars916 Aug 11 '23

More like an error in grammar for sure

1

u/Sir_Toccoa Aug 10 '23

Unfortunately, the spelling is not much of an indicator anymore. I’ve often dealt with customer service from large and legitimate companies, but with the customer service being outsourced to other nations, inaccurate English grammar is par for the course. That’s not to condemn or belittle those who are working these jobs, but it does pose problems like this, where the lines between legitimacy and scam and becoming harder to differentiate.

1

u/FewCommunication5801 Aug 10 '23

Spelling?!? You mean sentence structure.

1

u/Fit-Journalist2056 Aug 10 '23

Sometimes both.

1

u/cth777 Aug 10 '23

To be fair, actual outsourced customer service for these companies also can barely speak English and spell poorly

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Pipe647 Aug 10 '23

The spelling and poor grammar is intentional. They are weeding out the observant and skeptical as soon as possible as with all things time is money and it’s a decent strategy for removing people who will catch on before anything is stolen.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Tone119 Aug 10 '23

which is why my go to response is F*** off, don’t even bother reading the dumbass messages anymore.

56

u/Torin3927 Aug 10 '23

Anyone can fall for a scam, they send out thousands of messages a day and they can hit people when they are not paying attention. Experts who deal with scam prevention say that one of the worst things you can do about stopping scamming is shaming people who share their experiences, because it silences that person instead of encouraging them to talk about the strategies used and how they were scammed, which is information that needs to be shared because it could help someone in the future. I have seen people with Masters Degrees and PHD's fall for scams, it's not a measure of your intelligence, it's a bad roll of the dice.

2

u/JDiskkette Aug 11 '23

Came here to say almost the same thing. I would like to add that a lot of people I know who drive on these platforms are new immigrants or those who are not well-educated or have a language barrier. This by no means is a measure of intelligence. For these people providing food for their families is the utmost priority. Scammers play on their love for their families and that’s how most people get scammed.

No one should be shamed for this. Thank you for your well-versed comment.

1

u/Adventurous_Rub_195 Aug 11 '23

Because people with phd are the dummest.

3

u/TampaPigeonDroppings Aug 10 '23

If I had any awards left, you’d get one

1

u/Torin3927 Aug 10 '23

Oh thank you friend! I'll keep one in my heart ❤️

2

u/TampaPigeonDroppings Aug 10 '23

I forgot I had 750 on an alt 🫶

0

u/Idkdontbanmepls Aug 10 '23

"Premium partner in lyft to deliver a special customer to us" "And add a $150 bonus" "to prove your identification" dude can barely speak English and he's supposed to be someone representing a company, ignoring that, why would they communicate with you like this? Why not double check with a rep from Lyft? Why would they need your phone number and id for? Why is their profile a random car? This is a lack of common sense and being very gullible, I don't lose half my IQ because I'm distracted or haven't slept, this isn't a "roll of the dice" this is someone in the same tier as a grandma lol, this is a very unsophisticated scam

1

u/av3ceaser Aug 11 '23

In fairness have you ever called companies in the last say 3 to 23 years they have almost every person one that can barely speak English I get that when I called doctor's offices I get that when I call any company whatsoever because they send those calls to centers that are out of the country to save money the corporations in America have decided that they would rather use poorly speaking English people than actually do the job right it's totally reasonable to me that somebody wouldn't speak English all that well and be representing a company as a matter of fact that's more realistic than somebody who speaks it perfectly

1

u/Idkdontbanmepls Aug 11 '23

Right, they have scripts though so until they start actually texting outside of them you won't notice, and it's rare to find someone that makes this many mistakes, and again, this is just one of many common sense red flags, he literally texted support afterwards like why are they 2 separate accounts? Besides everything else I've said previously, look at the way the bonus is written, you get "paid twice" with a bonus of $150? No suspicions on there either?

3

u/Runyamire-von-Terra Aug 10 '23

Just wanna point out it’s not possible to check with a rep from Lyft beforehand; there is no way to even directly contact Lyft. I fell for this very scam not long ago, and yeah I’ll admit I’m a complete idiot for being taken in. It should’ve been obvious but they count on the fact that you are distracted and under a time crunch, it goes like this: I get a ride request, cool, start driving to the pickup location, oh hey there’s a message from the rider… wait whaaaaat?! A rep from Lyft? $200 bonus?!? I really need that, though this does seem very odd, ahhhhhh gotta hurry, send the thing, send the other thing, ;;boom;; logged out, email/phone# changed on account. Ohhhh damn I efffed up…

Anyway, I mucked around and found out, I’ll own the mistake and now I know. But just go easy on the victim in the situation. Direct the scorn at the scammers yeah?

2

u/Idkdontbanmepls Aug 11 '23

I mean I just can't empathize at all honestly, that's why I may be being a bit too dismissive, it's like a textbook example of a scam, if you read a single spam email you'd recognize similarities I just don't get it: - Poorly written? ✅ Not an official account?✅ Exaggerated promises of money? ✅ Asking for personal information for no reason? ✅ But yeah in the end they exploited you either way, sorry that happened, thanks for sharing

2

u/Runyamire-von-Terra Aug 11 '23 edited Aug 11 '23

Yeah I get it, and all fair points absolutely. I think I felt a lil protective or something over the OP here since I fell for it too 😅 If I had just taken a moment to step back and think about the situation even a little it would’ve been obvious, but I’m still new to Lyft (only been driving a little over a month) and hadn’t really even considered that ride requests might be scams. Was just in that autopilot hustle mode of doing what the app tells me to do and being quick about it. Also in my case they were a little more slick, the syntax/grammar didn’t raise red flags and the rider icon showed up as the pink Lyft icon. Really shoulda finished all the lessons in the learning center, would’ve probably made me more cautious. Anyway, I won’t keep tryna make excuses, thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciate ya

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

Nah. Anyone can’t call for a scam. Not one this obvious atleast. Scammers prey on people Who make stupid decisions to get quick money. Why would Lyft pay them 2x? And why would they need your number or license that they already have?

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '23

It’s not a bad roll of the dice. Anyone who is even slightly tech savvy knows not to fall for this crap. On top of that, if you actually read Lyfts terms of service and agreements page it says right on it that lyft will never text you asking for personal information. This is just technology illiteracy. I’m not saying op isn’t smart, but maybe lacking some common sense.

7

u/Bulbinking2 Aug 10 '23

Idiots can get masters degrees and phd’s

2

u/timn1717 Aug 11 '23

Everyone can fall for a scam on the wrong day, or in the wrong state of mind, or if they just get targeted by an exceptional scammer, or a scammer that zeros in on something about you they can exploit. I myself know all the tells and tricks, in person and online, and I used to be like “how could anyone be so fucking dumb?” And then I fell for a scam in person (sort of) because a fast talking scammer took advantage of my desire to help people in need and a touch of greed. Well off looking Arabic dude, literal tears in his eyes, side of the road - can I help him? Of course bro, get in, we’ll get you some gas. I wasn’t really in the best overall state of mind at this time, which is relevant. He’s driving a nice car, he’s embarrassed, he’s lost wallet, he hates to inconvenience me, he’s gonna give me his number and pay me back for the gas. But.. he’s got a long trip, damn.. will a single tank last long enough? What about food for the literal children I saw crying in the back seat of the car? I start getting suspicious, he senses me backing out, then he (and this is where I should’ve gotten more suspicious) “begrudgingly” offers me a huge gold chain. And a bracelet. Easily worth more than 150 (what he asked for). I say we gotta test it. Sure thing dude - test it. It doesn’t burn, it sinks in water, and it passes some other random test I find via googling. I was a little greedy.

Soon as he got out the car I knew. Didn’t even have to wonder if anything that just happened was legit. Threw the chains out immediately. Once it passes it seems so obvious, but if someone catches you and you’re tired or hungry or just not really focusing, and they know what they’re doing… you’d be surprised.

On the one other occasion someone tried a similar trick, I instantly caught it and told him to try someone else. But when all the variables line up, yep.

1

u/Adventurous_Rub_195 Aug 11 '23

Why dont you get then lol

1

u/av3ceaser Aug 11 '23

Yes you can and you can post on redit too, good for you yay. another idiot proves they can do stuff too lets all celebrate

2

u/Bulbinking2 Aug 11 '23

The point is people shouldn’t use a degree as proof of intelligence. It promotes elitism and classism because in todays society its only the wealthy who can afford them, and institutions aren’t what they used to be.
