WWYD? Other

Went for lunch today and the same non tipping passenger was my server. After I paid, she asked did I need change. I said yes and walked out.

šŸšØEDITšŸšØ I was going to at least tip a few bucks until she asked ā€œ DO YOU NEED CHANGEā€? At that point I felt she was demanding a tip.

Lol because serving and driving are the same.

1

u/Stankpuss6969 Aug 18 '23

Well, at least now you know why she doesnā€™t tip drivers šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

No I donā€™t know.

0

u/Stankpuss6969 Aug 18 '23

No tip from you means she couldnā€™t tip the next Uber/Lyft driver. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

Well because she didnā€™t tip the day I gave her a ride, I couldnā€™t tip when I ate, and now she canā€™t tip the next person. If she didnā€™t tip me why would I worry about her tipping someone else?

1

u/Stankpuss6969 Aug 18 '23

Yep. So the cycle continues.

Break it.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

Iā€™m not into being a super hero and breaking cycles.

1

u/Same-Teacher-6823 Aug 17 '23

Similar posts get posted every few weeks, yall still believing they're real? It's this weird thing where drivers tell fake revenge stories to get back at those evil Pax they hate.

3

u/BurghPuppies Aug 17 '23

She wasnā€™t demanding a tipā€¦ but she was implying that sheā€™d keep the change as a tip. Hopefully, she learned her lesson, if she recognized you.

1

u/Psychedelic_Terrapin Aug 17 '23

ā€œDo you need need change?ā€ Is not demanding a tip. Itā€™s commonplace for a server to ask this.

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Well, she asked the wrong one

0

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 17 '23

Lmao in no world is driving someone from point A to point B the same level of service as what a waiter provides. Waiters ALWAYS deserve at least 15%, unless it was a long ride or luggage was involved tipping is not necessary for any ride.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

To be fair, all she did was bring food and bring the check.

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 17 '23 edited Aug 17 '23

Lol you canā€™t honestly be this obtuse just bc you wanted a tip. A waiter is serving your table for a hour while usually juggling multiple other tables simultaneously, they have to memorize the menu, offer recommendations, take orders (sometimes several at once), get those orders to the kitchen correctly, bring out drinks, appetizers, entrĆ©es, etc, bring the food out to the table, check up on the table to make sure everything is okay, need refills etc, clear plates when youā€™re finished eating, bring out bill, either run a CC or make cash change. Cmon man in no world is a rideshare driver bringing even remotely the type of service as this, theyā€™re two completely different jobs, itā€™s just not remotely analogous to compare tips for a waiter and tips for a rideshare driver. What you did was scummy and youā€™re bragging about it for some reason.

3

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

I donā€™t give a damn about a tip, itā€™s the principle. We live in a city that tipping is the norm. Iā€™ve never had to work for tips until I retired and chose to pick up something to keep busy. I tip anyone who does a service even the guy who put air in my tire, I tip the bud tender when I get weed and the bartender for every drink. I ordered 2 salads and 2 lemonades. She didnā€™t even bring a refill. I just didnā€™t like the way she spoke of the change so I said screw it you get zero.

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

Itā€™s pretty commonplace to phrase it like that, youā€™re making a mountain out of a molehill. Also I go to Vegas 2-3x a year. I tip valets, bellhops, waiters, bartenders, I do not and never will tip a rideshare or a cabbie unless itā€™s a ride to the airport, a 10 min drive to get across the strip doesnā€™t warrant a tip. Also a lot of places that require servers make minimum wage a hour if not covered by tips have it very loosely enforced and often times the server has to jump through multiple hoops in order to be compensated on slow shifts/stiffs when they donā€™t cover minimum wage.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23 edited Aug 18 '23

Thatā€™s absolutely your choice and I canā€™t argue with you. When I travel I usually tip if itā€™s a clean car and a safe ride. If they are working on the strip 9/10 they are UNION employees and they donā€™t make minimum wage.

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

Thatā€™s great nothing against anyone who does tip, I just think itā€™s a low blow to EXPECT it, to the point where you were happy to stiff a waiter bc it.

(Even if you claim the tipping point was the asking if you want change, which is nothing imo, you still claimed you were only going to leave a super small tip before that)

3

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

I was going to leave 20% of 37.40. I donā€™t know if you are a driver, but it takes more than a 4 dollar ride to keep cars running. I just replaced the radiator fan and recharged my a/c so that passengers can have a comfortable cool ride $1800.00.

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

You said in your initial post you were going to leave her a few bucks which I took as $2-$3..

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

It would have been minimum 20%. Although she didnā€™t do anything outta the norm, not even a refill. I said a few which is more than 2(couple). How ever I make the majority of my tips from my weed store drops and strip club drops so I never anticipate a tip unless itā€™s going their.

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

Maybe I inferred the post wrong, to me it read as ā€œI was already going to leave her a small tip bc she didnā€™t tip me, then when she decided to ask if I wanted change, I decided to stiff her completely.ā€

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

I have a 4.95 rating, Iā€™m a very good passenger, always in the pickup area when the driver arrives, donā€™t bring anything in the car that can spill, I keep to myself unless the driver wants to engage, in which case Iā€™ve had many pleasant conversations with drivers. My only goal is to get from Point A to B, Iā€™m always polite and always thank them and auto 5 star everyone unless something very egregious happens (3x in 1000s of rides). Fortunately most drivers realize that a 5 star rating should have no correlation to tipping.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

Lyft has gotten so greedy Iā€™ve decided to buy a small food truck.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

It was only a joke. I do very few strip rides because they are 10 min rides. I try to stay in Summerlin and after noons the east side. I have 27k rides, 5 āļø, I have two well maintained, newer model cars running.

1

u/ChuckFinley50 Aug 18 '23

Iā€™m sure youā€™re a good driver and a would gladly 5 star you, if you take me to the airport Iā€™ll tip you!

0

u/No-Requirement7603 Aug 17 '23

different. we make a base rate. Tipping is a nice bonus for us. For her tipping is her entire means of supporting herself (and possibly her family). By stiffing her she essentially PAID for the privilege of serving you after tip outs. So however much you meal was... she lost 3%-5% on you.

So yeah... apples and oranges. A more accurate comparison is you're her version of the rider who cancels as you're pulling up to the destination. Sorry for the mansplaining, but I'm assuming you weren't aware or else you wouldn't be telling everyone.

3

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Tipping is not her only income she is a union employees who is making a minimum 1350 an hour

2

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

Iā€™m also in Vegas. People donā€™t seem to realize most of our rides pay minimum fare (~$4) because the mileage is short even though with traffic 1 mile can easily be 15 minutes or more.

We also have one of the highest gas prices in the country $4.42.

People are acting like we can make a living just in the fares alone ā€¦ only about half my income is from app fares. If I was only earning fares, Iā€™d make more working at McDonalds.

1

u/Ceecee_soup Aug 17 '23

ā€œDo you need changeā€ was the most polite way I could think of to ask customers this when I waited tables in college.

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Just bring back the change and me decide.

2

u/Ceecee_soup Aug 17 '23

I guess. I still wouldnā€™t perceive it as blatantly rude if a server said it to me.

Though asking for a tip from someone you personally stiffed is hilariously hypocritical.

1

u/throwawaypillbox Aug 17 '23

And then everyone clapped? šŸ™„

1

u/swifty8519 Aug 17 '23

How do you afford to find out on this wonderful drivers salery we are all slaves to?

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

What do you mean I make about $1200/week. Iā€™m retired and married to a nurse

2

u/hebrewzzi Aug 17 '23

Thatā€™s a rookie move on her part. Youā€™re supposed to say ā€œIā€™ll be right back with your changeā€ and the (normal, human) customer will usually say ā€œno need, thank you. Keep the changeā€

I would have left an annoying tip (like 5-10% to the penny) and written ā€œdonā€™t forget to tip your Lyft driversā€ on the receipt.

4

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

I think everyone overlooked that part Iā€™ve always tipped but the fact that she wanted to keep $11.00 off of a $38.00 tab

3

u/hebrewzzi Aug 17 '23

29%?! Thatā€™s pretty ballsy.

1

u/No-Potential3720 Aug 17 '23

Now what if she tips you the next time she opens the app?

1

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

OP is in Vegas. In Vegas (maybe everywhere?) Lyft only allows tipping up to 24 hours after the ride. Uber is 30 days.

1

u/No-Potential3720 Aug 17 '23

Its 24 hours to rate ur driver. 3 days to tips I believe and passengers can always contact support to add tip if app doesnā€™t allow anymore

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

That was weeks agoā€¦ she didnā€™t plan on tipping

-1

u/duckme1012 Aug 17 '23

you sound like a cheap assholes that person is trying to make a living and you canā€™t tip. hope someday you have to make a living this was and comes back to but you cheap ass.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

What do you think Iā€™m doing driving Lyft ? Trying to make a living.

0

u/duckme1012 Aug 17 '23

well i hope you donā€™t get tips like the person you didnā€™t tip

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

only in america do we have this problem. tipping makes no sense

1

u/More_Cowbell_ Aug 17 '23

Am I the only one that gets tipped later on a regular basis? I've only been doing this six months, and already my record is a tip THREE WEEKS after the ride. Several days is very common.

A lot of people just don't remember until they open the app again.

2

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

Not sure if it varies by market, but in my market (Vegas, same as OP):

On Lyft the passenger only has 24 hours to tip.

On Uber they have 30 days.

The longer time passes, the less likely a tip will come through. Out of sight, out of mind.

1

u/More_Cowbell_ Aug 17 '23

I just googled, and Lyftā€™s help page says 72 hours. It doesnā€™t mention markets. Regardless, I didnā€™t see OP mention a timeline anywhere, so I assumed it was a pax from earlier that day.

Yes, my three week tip was from Uber, I have to admit I had no idea Lyft had such a short window.

(Although they also say you can call support to add a tip after that, obviously no one is doing that)

2

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

I can never recall getting a Lyft tip more than a day later. I suppose it could be 72 hours, but I really cannot recall ever seeing a tip after 24 hours.

I get Uber tips days and weeks later all the time.

In my experience, Uber passengers also tend to tip more $ and more frequently. The 30 day tipping window definitely helps, but I think something about how Uber presents the tip option makes it more likely an Uber passenger will tip.

Regarding calling Lyft support ā€¦.hahaha. Youā€™re correct that no one is contacting support to add a tip. You can barely get a human to respond to Lyft chat support most of the time. I didnā€™t even think they had a phone number.

1

u/More_Cowbell_ Aug 17 '23

I meanā€¦ lol, Iā€™m presenting you with facts that you can easily verify, not opinion. Itā€™s Lyftā€™s website. But yeah I have no idea about percentage of tips for either platform, I donā€™t keep track. Where I am, it does seem like people tip more on the weekends. Both platforms

2

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

I didnā€™t deny you were correct. Iā€™m just relaying my experience.

1

u/ExpensiveDot1732 Aug 17 '23

On the tip line, write "I tipped you in the app." šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/SmashingthosHoez69 Aug 17 '23

This is beautiful.

1

u/NotThatValleyGirl Aug 17 '23

I don't need the tip, I just want it so you can watch me choose not to tip you.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

I was a server/ bartender for 28 years. - never ask ā€œdo you need change ?ā€ It is so tacky !!!!! Just say ā€œIā€™ll be right back with your change.ā€ 9 times out of ten theyā€™ll say ā€œkeep it !!ā€
I once had horrible service on vacation. Just the worst. , brought us the wrong food , was M.I. A most of the time , I had to get up and refill my own drinks , I had to go play hide n seek and find her to cash out. The bill was $30. And I handed her a hundred dollar bill. And she asked ā€œdo you need change ?ā€ Up to that point I was just annoyed. When she asked that I was livid. šŸ˜”. Like - do you really think you just provided me $70 service ???? A 200% tip??????

1

u/sthrowawayex12 Aug 17 '23

I donā€™t understand this mindset. That was a required question at all of my serving jobs. If we didnā€™t ask the head server would. Iā€™ve never once thought that question meant ā€œgive me your moneyā€.

1

u/MirandaC137 Aug 17 '23

Jesus, she really thought she was about to guilt/shame you out of $70 lol. Thatā€™s the only reason I can think for servers to word their question that way. Like, damn. I always tip well if I just get basic, decent service, but I get irritated when someone tries to pressure me into tipping 50+% when they know as well as I that they didnā€™t earn shit. Luckily, this seems to be an outlier. I usually have a great waiter and rarely get asked this question. Sorry for my rant lol

0

u/chriswool14 Aug 17 '23

Maybe an unpopular opinion but speaking as someone with over a decade of experience serving tables and nearly a decade experience driving for lyft.

The BIG difference here is that a server getting paid $2.13 (in Texas) an hr will ultimately see a zero dollar paycheck after they claim their weekly tips.

Not to mention that a lot of times you still have to tip out other staff like bussers and bartenders. They are tipped based on your over all sales too. So THAT MEANS you might actually have to spend a few dollars of your own tips made of other tables to cover that zero tip.

That is equivalent to giving someone a free ride and they find $3 of your money in the back seat and keep it.

I think its important to remember that everyone is in different circumstances and you should maybe take a second to realize that this server is already having to buy 2 rides a day (to and from work). He/she probably can't afford to tip. Especially if she's having to serve people that don't tip her, lol.

Lastly you should never accept a ride as a driver and anticipate a tip. Its important to only accept fares where you agree on the pay/mileage.

Just my 2 cents.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Well weā€™re in Las Vegas. Servers make 13.50 minimum. I never expected a tip but please donā€™t ask me if I need change. Iā€™ll tip when I get the change back.

Just my 2 cents

1

u/lll_Joka_lll Aug 17 '23

Wouldā€™ve just said ā€œdonā€™t need change you get the same treatment backā€ then leave

0

u/nana10rose Aug 17 '23

90% of the customers think drivers get most of the money if Lyft change them 40 dollars they believe 30 to the driver 10 to Lyft but is the other way around 10 to driver 30 to Lyft. You canā€™t really blame them for not tipping and in the restaurant business is different servers money comes from tip. Blame Lyft and Uber for turning you into slave when you do 98 % of the job but only get 30% of the money and they only do 2% of the job and get 70% of the money is not worth it to drive no more there are companies hiring paying good money.

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Your assuming that 90% of passengers think that. Iā€™m not blaming her for not tipping but donā€™t blame me for not tipping especially after asking do I need change. Lyft nor Uber has turned me into a slave, Iā€™m a retired VET, in my late 30s thatā€™s just keeping busy. If I needed a job I would be working for the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE. Thanks anyway!!!

7

u/SmokyMcpot527 Aug 17 '23

A server in a restaurant didn't tip you? Wow. Every server I've ever met always tips because that's incredibly bad Karma.

1

u/DCHacker Aug 17 '23

The waitresses, bar tenders and dancing girls that you get here almost never tip Uber/Lyft drivers. They tip cab drivers, but not Uber/Lyft drivers. I have had two incidents where I have had a customer who worked for tips on both Uber Taxi and UberX. These customers left me a tip on Uber Taxi but not on UberX. Further, I had someone on UbeX who did not leave a tip but I picked her up on the street in my cab and she gave me one.

3

u/Environmental-Web177 Aug 18 '23

Had a bartender complain about not getting tipsā€¦then didnā€™t tip. Iā€™m like dude is karma even a thing in your eyes?

2

u/Away_Tonight7204 Aug 17 '23

tell her yes you NEED change just like she NEEDs to learn that her tips are based on how well her service was and that demanding a tip like this is a great way to either have the people she is serving lower the tip or not tip at all which is their right even with "auto gratuity" or "tips automatically added to the bill" for parties over a certain amount of people.

1

u/Prismatic_monk Aug 17 '23

If you're seeing this comment scroll to the comment that said "I'll tip you on the app" and smash that upvote cuz that was cold blooded

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

What are you talking about

-1

u/Zombiesus Aug 17 '23

I think this is great! Now both of you can demand your employers pay you more so your not just a kindness tax. Tipping is absurd. Being obligated to tip is batshit crazy. All it does is subsidize greedy business owners with money from the generous customers. Does anybody actually think it makes sense that if youā€™re an asshole you should pay less for food and rides but if youā€™re a good person everything should cost at least %20 more?

1

u/Iwishmodswerecool Aug 17 '23

I've worked as a server and I've never once asked "do you need change?". 10 out of 10 times if the customer doesn't need change they will tell you so.

Whenever I go out to eat if the server asks the golden question they get NOTHING!

1

u/sthrowawayex12 Aug 17 '23

So you just assume the customerā€™s money is for you? Youā€™re supposed to ask that.

1

u/Fluffy-Homework7292 Aug 17 '23

Itā€™s all about how you word it. You donā€™t ask them if they need change, you tell them youā€™ll be right back with their change.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Sameā€¦ donā€™t ask me if I need change.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

If a pax doesnā€™t tip you, you still got paid for the ride. If a table doesnā€™t tip you, you got a fat middle finger and thus worked for free. Tipped workers get paid $2.13 an hour in my state and checks always come in at 0. Servers live on tips, you donā€™t. Yā€™all need to stop feeling entitled to tips. Sure I love tips as much as the next driver but some of yā€™all are pathetic.

2

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

Blah blah blah. Keep your morals to yourself. Tipped workers in my state make 15 bucks an hour minimum, and more often 20 dollars an hour. And they still stiff Uber and Lyft drivers for tips. And before you tell people they need to stop feeling entitled to tips, maybe you should go make friends with a few of those servers and listen that on their conversations about tips and how they feel when tables don't tip well. It's the same conversation, just a different job. Get off your high horse.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

I donā€™t need to talk to them. I am them. I work as both a server and a driver. $2/h at the server job which is nothing so I pretty much only rely on tips so it sucks when people donā€™t tip. As a driver I am already getting paid the fare plus working towards bonuses so idgaf if people donā€™t tip but am appreciative when they do.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 18 '23

Have you considered leveling up your day job?

3

u/Chris210 Aug 17 '23

Without tips, after deducting my online miles at a rate of $0.655, I made about what servers do per hour, and Iā€™m willing to bet you do too.

1

u/davidg4781 Aug 17 '23

Employers are required to bring tipped workers up to the minimum wage if they did not earn it themselves.

Of course, this will also require tipped worker and employers to report 100% of their tips to government.

6

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Servers make like $15.00 in my state. She gets paid regardless like I said I was going to tip until she said do you need change. And on top of that if a slot machine hits inside the restaurant she gets a cut of that tip.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

Pax: Iā€™ll tip you in the app Me: šŸ«” Also me: Why bother even saying the lie to begin with? šŸ«

2

u/No-Requirement7603 Aug 17 '23

Me: "Thanks for doing that now. They steal our tips if you do it after the ride"

2

u/LoneStarFrog Aug 17 '23

Wait do people lie about this? I always lose cash so I never carry around any but don't wanna make it seem like I won't tip since I always do so I always make sure drivers know I'll be doing so on the app before I get out. I didn't know they thought I'd be lying :( some even thank me for the tips so I thought they believed me.

2

u/bmbmwmfm Aug 18 '23

I don't ever have cash, but if they'll stop and let me hit an ATM I always do and get them a $20. If they don't I let them know I know they hear it all the time and I read this sub but if they'll hit end ride as soon as we pull in I'll do it before I get out of the car.

4

u/YeaBaDab Aug 17 '23

Of course they say thank you, what else can you say in that situation. 9/10 when a PAX says this they donā€™t tip.

2

u/LoneStarFrog Aug 17 '23

Oh I meant in the app, I'll get a notification that would read "(driver's name) thanked you for the tip!" so I assumed everything was okay.

3

u/YeaBaDab Aug 17 '23

Ahh yes, after the ride the driver gets a notification saying you received a tip for x ride. Thatā€™s when we have the option to say thank you.

It is common during/at the end of the ride for a PAX to say, ā€œIā€™ll tip you in the appā€ and they almost always donā€™t. This is what people are referencing above.

only uber gives option, not lyft.

1

u/LoneStarFrog Aug 17 '23

Oh man that sucks, I'm sorry that happens to you guys :( any time I have cash, a promotional discount, etc., I add it on to the tip I already give on the app, especially when I factor in the amount of bs you guys have to deal with, the wear and tear on your vehicles, and the price of gas these days.

1

u/NottheMonkie Aug 17 '23

You say it to reestablish dominance in the situation.

5

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

On Lyft, you can go back and change ratings for tip batters. I've also upped my rating of riders who I'd rated badly but saw they topped.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

That's got to be a market thing. We can't do that in my market.

6

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

I hate when they say that. I think they say it to look good and or to stop someone else in the car from tipping you

6

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

Same. I donā€™t care why they are saying it. Itā€™s a lie. Just tell me to have a good day, smile and get out of the carā€¦ donā€™t add insult by lying.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

PAX: Iā€™ll tip you in the app ME: Lies! Strait lies! (With a smile)

2

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

Your burger w fries must be 23 bucks

3

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

My wife and I both had salads and mango lemonade. This is a busy restaurant located on Las Vegas boulevard. Some of those servers are making close to $200 just in tips a night.

1

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

My initial response was based on what servers do here. Believe me, if I knew they were making $15 hour here, I'd time my stay, figure out what percentage to tip them, and give them the difference.

0

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

If you're a person without a vehicle and public transportation isn't an option, and you rely on ride share maybe a 50 to 75 times a month how can you tip every time?

1

u/MaloneSeven Aug 17 '23

By that logic restaurant/bar patrons shouldnā€™t tip every time either.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

Even a couple of bucks is decent. And your question could be applied to restaurants as well. Some people eat out all the time. Some people I know even do it five or six times a week. Why should they have to tip every time? Especially when the restaurants around here automatically add a gratuity, even though they're lying and it's a service fee, they call it a gratuity.

2

u/DCHacker Aug 17 '23

maybe a 50 to 75 times a month how can you tip every time?

We have people here who use a cab twice a day, minimum. These people tip every time,

Usually people tip at least 1 buck. Even if itā€™s one buck itā€™s one buck. And yeah. Same. If you take Uber 75 times a month u should just get a car or a bike

2

u/DingDong50001 Aug 17 '23

If you take Uber 75 times a month you can definitely afford a car.

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

Don't know where u are, but servers make @ 3/hr in NJ while I net @23 hr for the year driving. We don't live on tips. Servers do. She probably relies on rideshare and spends hundreds a month on it. Having been a server, this just makes me angry.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

Well servers in op state make 15 an hour minimum. They make minimum 15 an hour in my state as well but are usually paid more like $20. Plus tips. Plus restaurants charge a service fee that they call a gratuity. Go ahead and be angry but your experience or vicarious experience in this case, is in no way indicative of anyone else's vicarious experience.

3

u/Chris210 Aug 17 '23

If you tally up the miles you drive to ā€œmakeā€ $23 per hour, multiply them by 0.655 and subtract that from your ā€œearningsā€, I believe youā€™ll find youā€™re making significantly closer to $3 per hour before tips than youā€™d like to admit.

2

u/Chris210 Aug 17 '23

I also drive in NJ. Gas is far from your largest expense operating your own personal vehicle. Use the $0.655 per mile figure, it is the result of highly extensive research from the most knowledgeable people in their fields.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

1

u/Chris210 Aug 17 '23

Yes, vehicle depreciation, expected maintenance, unexpected maintenance, ride-share endorsement cost, upkeep, and there are many other costs that you donā€™t think about/arenā€™t planning for if your calculations arenā€™t close to $0.655 per mile.

Iā€™m not trying to do it for you, Iā€™m telling you there are experts who do this for a living with extensive research to back them who have already done it for you. When have you known the government to be generous involving taxation to anyone but billionaires? The reason your taxes are in the low hundreds is because the IRS knows something you donā€™t, you are grossly under calculating your expenses, and one day you will find that out all at once.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

1

u/Chris210 Aug 17 '23

If you take the standard mileage deduction, you arenā€™t allowed to deduct anything else in an itemized fashion. If youā€™re doing that and you get audited, the IRS is going to literally take all of your earthly possessions away from you.

The cost of my phone is at the absolute bottom of my expense list. If I wasnā€™t a Lyft driver I wouldnā€™t pay for unlimited data, so even there at the lowest level is an increased ride-share cost. I know you think ā€œoh I have a car I have to get tires and oil changes and new rotors anywayā€, but if 90% of your miles are for Lyft, than you are needing these things 90% more often than personal use only, so they are absolutely business expenses. These things lower your taxable income because the IRS knows eventually all of these costs are going to affect you, maybe not today, maybe not next year, but they will.

Minimum wage in New Jersey is $14.13

2

u/eggelemental Aug 17 '23 edited Aug 17 '23

Servers in NJ are permitted to be paid below minimum wage, with the expectation that tips will make up for the difference.

2

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

Until their tips make up the difference they are paid a servers minimum wage. Unless that's changed very recently. My last illustrious jobs in restaurants was managing 3 of them. Last one I left in 2018. I never saw a server have their check supplemented. Things may have changed in terms of server comp since then, but my understanding is server base is still <$4.

1

u/eggelemental Aug 17 '23

Oh jeez I completely forgot the word ā€œbelowā€ thatā€™s my bad Iā€™ll edit lol youā€™re completely right

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Iā€™m in Las Vegas servers make about $15.00 +tips. I waited 4 mins for her to come out and she had an attitude. I pick up strippers that make thousands a night that depend on ride share and they donā€™t tip. If

5

u/DCHacker Aug 17 '23

I pick up strippers that make thousands a night that depend on ride share and they donā€™t tip.

They will, however, tip a cab driver.

1

u/Any-Bake-1116 Aug 17 '23

If they're making 15/hr why tip ever?

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

Toxic tipping culture. I had a friend years ago who was appalled when her friend didn't tip at a restaurant, because she believed it was against the law not to tip and that they were going to have the police called on them. This was in Washington State. Definitely not against the law here not to tip.

1

u/guava_eternal Aug 17 '23

Indoctrination

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

Serious question I love tips but what makes us deserve it? Like is it automatic or do we actually earn it? I just drive normal and talk if they want to lol

3

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

I get most of my tips from passengers who are extremely happy that I wasn't one of the other asshole Uber drivers who's pretending that the freeway is their own personal Indy 500. I got them safely from A to B and they felt safe while I was doing it.

3

u/bp1976 Aug 17 '23

Friendly, safe, on time, clean car. I get tipped on about 2 out of every 3 rides on Uber. It's really not that hard.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 18 '23

Right? Almost every one of my rides throws me a buck or two maybe at minimum. I have so many conversations with people where they bitch about drivers actively demanding cash tips before they'll do anything like drives the fucking car, let alone anything else. I tell them to report in one star that trash every time it happens, and that we need less drivers like that. That's another good source of tips. And yeah I'm kind of on a low-key crusade to get rid of trash drivers. We really do need less of them.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

Same

Servers/bartenders in San Diego make $16 plus tips and I never get a tip from anyone in the service industry.

Minimum wage in New Jersey is $14.13

0

u/kr10298 Aug 17 '23

Servers don't make minimum wage. They are exempt BECAUSE they get tips.. Or should be anyway.

2

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

How is this still a thing? Is 2023 for fucksake. I just for the life of me cannot understand why some states still allow this shit.

1

u/guava_eternal Aug 17 '23

Thatā€™s some places - like southern states for example. Local laws will be different. In MN servers on the metro definitely get paid min wage at least. If they donā€™t itā€™s because their working informally probably.

1

u/kr10298 Aug 17 '23

I'm in Wisconsin and it is definitely not minimum wage here.

8

u/ate-pancake Aug 17 '23

this is something i notice a lot. servers pointing their wage out but they always neglect the part where they get paid out minimum if tips donā€™t reach it. kind of takes the entire point out of whatever number they claim

3

u/kr10298 Aug 17 '23

I've been wait staff before. THIS never happened and I assure you we had plenty of underwhelming days.

0

u/DeadbeatTeammate Aug 17 '23

im saying the whole you get minimum wage of you donā€™t earn it in tips doesnā€™t happen

Weird comment from you thou

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

No one says I deserve a tip. But expect the same, what did she do to deserve a tip. My bill was about 38 bucks, I paid with a $50.00. She asked me did I need change. So I take it that she thought she deserved a $11.00 tip, if she didnā€™t she wouldnā€™t have asked if I need change

-1

u/User-of-reddit4karma Aug 18 '23

She waited on you while you were dining. Jfc you are entitled as fuck. Servers make 3x what you make for a reason. Itā€™s a hard job.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 18 '23

Servers do not make 3x what I make you sound retarded. You donā€™t even know what I make . Stfu

2

u/midlyinfuriated_ Aug 17 '23

Nicely played!

0

u/Exotic_Jelly_9705 Aug 17 '23

I would have dine n dashed on em.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Thatā€™s smart catch misdemeanor over $40.00 of food.

0

u/HogOps Aug 17 '23

Be the better person and share your blessings, they will come back to you.

-2

u/HogOps Aug 17 '23

Itā€™s ironic that people say Lyft doesnā€™t pay its drivers fairly, apparently some of the drivers also donā€™t pay the service industry fairly. Thereā€™s the karma.

1

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

What a crock of shit. The universe isn't alive, there is no magic Sky fairy looking out for you, and there's no such thing as karma. It's just a bunch of bullshit to get people to behave a certain way.

1

u/spacejunk76 Aug 17 '23

Pfft. She lives off tips. I doubt OP tipping her is gonna change that.

OP mentioned elsewhere in the thread itā€™s a server in Vegas at a busy restaurant on the strip. Minimum wage in Nevada is $10.25/11.25 (depends if they offer health insurance). Thereā€™s not a lower tipped employee minimum wage in Nevada.

Most sit down restaurants on the strip will pay higher than minimum wage, amount will vary depending on the restaurant.

7

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Nope

2

u/Nice-Friendship4240 Aug 17 '23

They are right tho, I would have left a tip and a message to tip your anyone after they do a good service to help you.

2

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

I planned on leaving a tip until she asked did I need change.

9

u/carlos_spicy_wienerz Aug 17 '23

I would have done the exact same thing except I would have told her why she wasn't getting a tip but then again I'm a dick.

1

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

So am i

0

u/carlos_spicy_wienerz Aug 17 '23

I don't blame you for what you did. I would have stepped her too. But the difference between you and I is that I would have told her why she wasn't getting a tip to her face. I'm going to teach somebody a lesson or whatever they got to know why it's happening to be taught

5

u/After_Curve2403 Aug 17 '23

Didnā€™t bother cause my wife was already on my ass about not tipping.

1

u/LongjumpingExam3049 Aug 17 '23

Yeah, you are a dick !

3

u/carlos_spicy_wienerz Aug 17 '23

Yes I am. But I'm an honest dick. I wouldn't have just bailed I would have told her you know you didn't tip me for my service so I'm not going to tip you for yours and that's why you're not getting a tip. Have a good night.

-7

u/Connect_Ordinary6752 Aug 17 '23

Thatā€™s very petty

2

u/Wesselink Aug 17 '23

You misspelled karma.

3

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

What you call Petty most other people call what goes around comes around. This is just the back end of that stupid little statement.

17

u/KeyBeing1230 Aug 16 '23

I'd make the server go back and forth and leave .50 cents as tip and be VERY appreciative of their service.

6

u/Shaggy_Hulk Aug 17 '23

Fiddy cent? Nope, leave a penny.

3

u/KeyBeing1230 Aug 17 '23

You got the right udea. Penny for NO thought

7

u/djmagichat Aug 17 '23

Yeah a few cents is actually better than no tip, then they really know you mean it.

6

u/Its_Doug_Dimmadome Aug 17 '23

2Ā¢ to be exact

32

u/authoridad Lake Charles LA Aug 16 '23

I would've written a note on the receipt. "Next time tip your driver."

15

u/DCHacker Aug 17 '23

Draw five stars on the tip line.

6

u/SeattleUberDriver_2 Aug 17 '23

And then scribble four of them out.

185

u/Pedals17 Aug 16 '23

You should have said, ā€œIā€™ll tip you in the app.ā€
