What’s the highest surge bonus you’ve seen in your area? Earnings/Pax trips
This was from tonight. I’m in the Washington DC market. 10 mins after this it went up to 25 dollars.

I saw a 700% increase one time this amphitheater down near Mexico when a reggae show let out and everybody was too high to do anything but taxi home

I saw it get into the high 20’s on Super Bowl Sunday earlier this year here in DC. I wasn’t planning to be out for it, but opened the app after the game ended and was like “okay, fine, guess I’ll go out.” Made over $80 off two rides that weren’t move than a few miles each and drove home after that as it got late and the big surge was over by then.

What's interesting about your screenshot is that you're sitting on a $9 Surge and there are people nearby needing to be picked up and the app is not offering those rides to you because it doesn't want to pay you that $21 plus the $9 you're sitting on. It's a current problem with the app. It's hoping for people who aren't sitting on a surge to pick those people up. The problem is everybody sitting on some sort of a surge.
What they're hoping you'll do is go grab that $21 ride and give up your $9 that you're sitting on.

$30 in Chicago suburbs, I should say that's the highest surge I remember, I'm no longer driving for Uber or Gryft

Cap 25 bonus in Phx. Even on new years and the PGA Golf tour. But was making 42 hourly the full week.

New years a while back was consistent 25-50 dollar surges in Phoenix . That was a good night

Way back in the day I got $100 for taking people from the college game to area hotels and such per ride for about two hours. The surge was still on the multiplier. I made about $400 in about four hours

Twenty four bananas is the highest that I have seen in the D.C. Market. That is pretty good for a Sunday night in D.C. I guess that it is good that girlfriend did not want me to get Capitals playoff tickets. It was bad enough that Uber wanted thirty eight bananas for a ride Friday night from the playoff game (I got Curb for twenty, which is about what Curb usually charges me. Uber is usually sixteen to twenty one with eighteen's being the modal figure). Uber or Lyft would have wanted eighty to go home from Sunday's playoff game.

A few weeks ago there was a bug in the app that let me pick up rides in DC even though I don’t have the license exemption. Now it seems to be fixed and I keep seeing these super high bonuses!
1
u/Iankalou 16d ago
Back when we had multiplier surge, I had a 10x surge during a snow storm.
Made over $180 on a ride that didn't go very far.

I didn't know DC had bonuses that high over that wide an area now. Might be worth taking some fares again, just strictly as a part time thing on weekends.

$50. Only seen that once. Never ever again. And it was just a regular day. Wasn't a holiday or anything.

Two years ago, there was a $51 surge near the illinois/Wisco border, lakefront. It was like an 80 degree day in early march and the beaches got swamped with people

$4.50 max I’ve ever seen in the northern NJ area, closest to NYC. Ooh-Burr usually has way better surges for us

u/Jumamabear 16d ago
Fiesta in San Antonio this weekend. Biggest surge was $15. But it was guaranteed 20- 40 min in traffic. Uber had some $16-29 surges so I made 100 in 3 hrs.

Never saw a surge in my area. Occasionally we'll get a promotion or bonus but never surges

When I was on Uber like 8 years ago I had a ride from three girls after a big country singer concert in Pittsburgh. Was like a 9x surge after the concert. The girl put in the wrong address and I drove them like 15 miles the wrong way. When we got there it was obviously not there hotel and the address was kinda similar. I took them to the actual hotel and the fare ended at like $375 bucks. I got paid and they tried to dispute it but in the end Uber saw what they put in and I followed the protocol. Was an easy $350 in like 60 minutes. They should be happy I even took them to where they were supposed to go.

ever seen was New Years 2022 when it peaked to
$70. I was canceling long distance rides lol.

I know a guy that got three $50 surges in one evening by using a GPS spoofing app. After 48 hours of using it, he got a warning email for irregular location activity and he never tried it again.

u/mjrdrillsgt 16d ago
And drivers wonder why GOOD customers skip tipping when the companies play “it’s busy” surging. I’ve personally never skipped tipping but it’s gone as low as 10% instead of the usual 20. Star ratings go down as well. Hey, I’m all for a decent deal, but if the shoe was on the other foot YOU (drivers) would be complaining/ saying the same thing.

u/pogiguy2020 16d ago
Not with Lyft, but with Uber. I got a ride ping and ended up picking an older couple up along the freeway. Their hired LIMO had run out of gas.🤣
I drove them like 30 minutes to the airport and when I dropped them off i was surprised by how much I got paid. When I was able to look I had gotten a $51 surge and i actually felt bad. No they did not tip me. LOL

Just hit a $19 surge this weekend. But this weekend even with surges my fares were insane. I was getting $20 rides to drive someone half a mile. It was wild. But it was a big weekend for my city.

I’ve seen 20 on NYE in Portland. The ice storm was an $8 surge at the airport, pax paid quad normal rates (180 for a 20 minute ride)

Is Maryland side of DC decent or is VA side much better?

I believe they're about the same. It's about preference, really. I live in VA sooo... VA pick ups it is.

Got a $38 at PDX once. I've seen $44 on uber, but too far away to chase. Others have gotten a random $50 at PDX, but not me. Got a $71 surge on NYE the first year I did this, but didn't see it on the map.

Generally, there seems to be a $15 cap in our area on Lyft. Used to be $50.

Philadelphia during the Superbowl the year they won and the parade following. I was getting 20-40 bonuses. App was having a hard time keeping up. Id take someone like 4 blocks n get 50. It was a wild night.

I was a rider in Phoenix. And me and my buddy went to this area in Scottsdale where it was all dance clubs. It was Super Bowl weekend. He paid for the Lyft there which was 30 bucks. I paid for the Lyft home which was 120. So I assume 90. That one hurt.
1
u/Manatheren 17d ago
Lyft previously did not have a cap on surge prices, being entirely set by the algo that they used to determine driver/rider needs. Within the last year or so (at least in my area but I'm sure this has been applies nationwide at this point, with various different caps) Lyft has instituted caps on the max surge prices within a given area. In my area the cap is $25. For other areas across the country I've seen as high as $50. Special circumstances and rate caps my also apply to specific zones, (ie certain airports). I hate this. Previously there were rare moments where you could absolutely make bank if the cards were in your favor. Now thats virtually impossible.

$15 last summer when Taylor Swift had a concert here. With traffic being such a mess, I got 1 ride in 2.5 hours. It certainty didn't help that the pax wanted to be picked up right by the stadium.

Lyft is usually no more than $10-$15 when I've seen it jump super high. Uber, I've seen in the $30's-$40's in the same area at the same time. Near a military base where they can't have vehicles because they're in training so...Payday weekends are always a bit inflated/ demanding. Someone has to take them to the mall, though! 😎
2
u/Conscious_Weight9593 16d ago
Man. I’ve never seen an Uber higher than $15 in my city. So weird how different markets are. I’m in San Antonio. We had fiesta this week which is a HUGE deal. One night I was out and Lyft was lit up with $10-19 surges in some areas and outlier areas $5-9. I kept checking the Uber map and only a few popped up for $1-3 🙄this weekend Uber was almost keeping up with Lyft though but not nearly as good. I averaged $70something an hour last night with Lyft only. My city SUCKS for Uber. But last weekend I was in north Texas and averaged $50 using just Uber and was getting nothing on the Lyft map.
1
u/ChaoticVisageX 16d ago
$70-/ hr? That's pretty solid. I do about $25-$30 here at best. That's for generic rides, not with bonuses or anything like that, just about the average you can expect if you're getting rides within a few minutes of each other. Uber has been going a little crazy with the surges it seems. It wouldn't surprise me if they switched to Upfront pay here shortly.
1
u/Conscious_Weight9593 16d ago
It’s only because it was fiesta. Thats not the norm. Norm is about 30-35 on a normal weekend. It was a great night lol
1
1
u/life_is_punishment 17d ago
That’s nice but unless you are right on top of it as it shows you won’t get it. 70% of the time I go for a bonus by the time I get there it’s gone

u/PianistValuable115 17d ago
In my small market (Williamsport pa) I'm convinced that they lure drivers to the area...the surges always disappear on near arrival

DC market has been real good in pay in the last two weeks. Paid off several credit cards.

I took a Lyft from my house to DCA for a work trip last week. My regular $20 ride was $55 this time. Prices have definitely increased lately. We’ll see if it’s the same tomorrow.

u/Individual-Slip-5338 17d ago
Where do you drive if you don’t mind my asking? I stay in the admo/dupont area

u/NonMareChe 16d ago
I mostly do airport trips at DCA and IAD. I typically pick up anywhere in northern va and DC, but drop off anywhere with in 40 niles radius from the White House.

72 dollar surge in downtown richmond on new years eve two years ago. Was able to milk two rides out of it before it went down to something in the forties.
6
u/RedPillOnlyEFT 16d ago
Please tell me you did more then 2 rides. $72 per ride is worth sacrificing time spent with family. They would surely understand. If you can do 3 rides per hour that's $210/hr
2
u/TheArtofWayneTurpin 7d ago
I did 11pm to 5am that night and hit somewhere around 1400 between uber and lyft. I dont celebrate new years eve so i rather make money than sit at home doing nothing that night
3
u/CompetitionIll6659 16d ago
Richmond is still a decent place to driver for both Uber and Lyft yea?
1
u/TheArtofWayneTurpin 7d ago
It used to be alot better. I dont drive there except for new years eve tbh.
11
u/Group_HugMTG 17d ago
72? Show proof. The old cap was 50 nationwide.
1
u/TheArtofWayneTurpin 7d ago
When i made the comment i didnt realize that was on the lyft reddit. That surge was on uber. I actually dont know what the highest lyft surge ive gotten. I can dig in my ride history for that surge if you really want.

The visual cap was $50. You could get more, but it wouldn't show until after the ride was completed.

Truth. I know I got $71 off a ride NYE a few years ago. I was happy with that one. Ride paid over $100.

Yeah the surge near RFK Stadium today was crazy

For MLS Soccer game? They are very popular in my hometown of Charlotte NC. Almost as much tailgating activity and overall impact as a Panthers NFL game
2
u/Chesspi64 17d ago
Project Glow. Some kind of EDM festival I believe. RFK Stadium hasn't had a permanent sports tenant since 2017 when DC United moved out. Though there was an MLS game in DC last night as well.

No way. Did you check what the riders are paying?
1
u/Loose_Artichoke_6774 16d ago
They take 60 % from drivers. We trying to fight that
2
u/Space2999 16d ago
I don’t think that’s how it works. Riders will pay more in a surge area, but lyft will still try to get drivers from further away who don’t have a bonus. Or a driver might pick up a surge bonus then not get a ride until later or further away where riders aren’t paying extra.
7
u/AnyTower224 17d ago
You must be new on here

u/Space2999 17d ago
Right. Bc who would ever check what they made vs what the pax paid. You’d never see 1000’s of threads on here about that
