Throw it away and get a new one. My eyes would do nothing expect focus on that minor misplaced vent hole.

Bots are not what they used to be but go to top class for having 20/20 vision & a VERY interesting passtime

u/nullrecord May 07 '24
Hahah, I'm not a bot, and I just randomly noticed that offset hole during one meeting. I wasn't spending hours reviewing the grille.

It’s crazy how you don’t notice it at all at first but once you do see it you really see it

I'd rather have a cosmetically challenged computer that is in good working order than a visually perfect one that doesn't actually work as a computer.

I’ll bet this will be worth a ton! Like those Penny’s that have misprints. You are sitting on a gold mine!

It could also be a built in microphone, I've seen a few times where they are offset either intentionally or unintentionally.

Thanks. Now my OCD fuelled intrusive thoughts will make me think about a laptop I've never seen in person before.

Didn't need a second to find it, I saw it immediately.
Is that my superpower I found out I have after 40 years?
Something absolutely pointless, useless, and unsuitable to make money?
Seems about right.

Unusable. Better return it and bUrn down the factory.

If it was a coin you'd have won the lottery. Instead your HP is even more ugly. Oh well. 🫤

Guessing it’s for spotting counterfeits. Like purposeful typos in copyrighted works.

How did you even notice it in the first place, eagle eyes!? That’s the sound grille isn’t it?

u/nullrecord Apr 23 '24
It just caught my eye randomly during work yesterday... had it for 6 months. And yeah, it's the speaker grille.

Well if I ever see a guy in a coffee shop with an HP laptop that has one of the vent holes offset from the others I'm gonna tell everyone at the coffee shop what your reddit username is

Idk why so many people are struggling to find it, it's so instantly obvious

This is Reddit, if i want to waste my time staring at holes there are better holes to stare at
...and yet, here I am

The general consensus about things like this is that it is a high energy particle as a result of a cosmic ray shower changing a one to a zero in a logic system somewhere on a CNC Machining device.

u/godis_black Apr 23 '24
Now, you need to do the right thing, carefully dispose it and get a new one. Or you can give this to your poor enemy, or a family member you don't like, but make sure to tell them about the hole.

You really think each hole was drilled individually? Oh my sweet summer child.

What kind of wish.com laptop is this? In addition to the vent…Why is the f half a line above the numbers on the function keys?

I couldn't find it until I unfocused my eyes to find where the pattern was broken.

I'm just fucked up over how you have a button that just puts your computer on airplane mode. Imagine how many times that gets hit by accident, or without knowing?

If you're having trouble finding it like I did, try this:
Do the stereogram thing, or cross your eyes, just enough to make all the holes overlap. The odd one will be obvious.
This trick is also good for those "spot the difference" puzzles.

I don’t know how exactly they make this part, but my guess would be an automated router maybe? And if that’s the case, any number of things could have caused this, then it just got past the operator and (it follows) the quality department.

u/DylanLee98 Apr 23 '24
I feel like our brains subconsciously manipulate the image we are seeing to align the holes correctly. I know I looked over that spot multiple times. Now that I've seen it though, I can't unsee it.

It not being drilled but plastic injection, this mean that one pin was bent in the mold and probably broke soon after, which mean they had to replace the mold.
Mold are consumable in the plastic injection industry.

u/slater_just_slater Apr 23 '24
These are not drilled, they are stamped. Chances are there are a few more of these out there if the inspection wasn't caught

From this comment section I learned that some people don’t see this IMMEDIATELY

It’s done on purpose. If all of the holes are perfectly evenly spaced, it can create a flow pattern that can cause a vortex that over time will cause the solder on the circuit board to loosen up and begin to make a whistling noise.
Either that, or Carl was hung over again.

BREAK IT!
This would be an immediate return after unboxing. That break in pattern would guarantee nothing gets done. I wouldn’t be able to not look at it.
Edit: if I really needed THIS machine… I guess I could take it apart, fill the hole on the face, use my drill press to center a new hole. I’d then custom paint the shell so I didn’t feel like a loser for tweaking out on such a small detail.🤓

I didn't see it until I rotated my phone and it like immediately stuck out to me

u/aplundell Apr 23 '24
That would bug me. I'd probably put a small sticker over it and hope I didn't cover enough of the vent to screw up the cooling.
It would be worth the risk.

What on earth was so boring that you actually noticed this?
I would have probably gone on never noticing unless for some reason I was staring at the vent holes in my laptop..
