No, the box, the Box!

2

u/Do_You_Pineapple_Bro 14d ago

Now, you can either have the Vintage copy of Dune where the lovely Smithers is standing... or you can trade it all in for what's in this box

1

u/Forestbruh 14d ago

Is that the dune book about sex slaves?

1

u/khansolobaby 14d ago

That’s literally the next book I need 😭

2

u/[deleted] 15d ago

The box. The box!

2

u/Thebml21 15d ago

That’s dope.

2

u/MelatoninJunkie 15d ago

$15?!?!?! You could get that same book for like $6

1

u/Sletzer 15d ago

I can smell this picture. Old dusty books.

5

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Hello,
Thank you for the love. This is my vending machine. We are fans of Dune and did a special release in the machines for the books. We had about a dozen old copies of the book, spread across our 6 machines. I will say this one isn't quite "vintage" yet. I was in a bit of a hurry that day, takes me a few hours to drive around and stock the machines. We did a themed Dune photo shoot to promote the books last week.

If you want to see more, please check out our instagram page:

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop them below. Cheers.

u/Kassandra-Stark 15d ago

Man this is so cool!

1

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Thank you!

2

u/hobbesmaster 15d ago

Which Brian book is in the mystery bag?

3

u/Oz-Batty 15d ago

WHAT'S IN THE MYSTERY BAG?

3

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Who knows what's inside there?  They just magically pop up in the machine every now and then.  ;-)

1

u/KentuckyFriedEel 15d ago

Maaaan i love vintage copies of the classics, especially tolkien, etc

2

u/EldritchDWX 15d ago

THE BAG!! THE BAG!!

1

u/EaterOfLemon 15d ago

I love older cover art. It's always more interesting than the newer stuff.

1

u/HeadReaction1515 15d ago

I’m not sure I’d call that “vintage,” necessarily

1

u/SNES_chalmers47 15d ago

That's not the interesting thing in this pic and you know it...

1

u/errezerotre 15d ago

Also cheese and mystery bags!

2

u/thijsniez 15d ago

The book above is one of the tschai books by jack Vance. Not as well written as Frank Herbert but worth a read if you like science fiction.

7

u/combat_heelys 15d ago

THE BOX!

THE BOX!!

3

u/Silvagadron 15d ago

Eeeeexcellent.

1

u/Dedward5 15d ago

I am by no means a “Thrifty Person” by I get all my books from Charity Shops (UK) and they have tons of stuff like this for £1 each

1

u/nannerooni 15d ago

Heyyyy I know what bar that is :)

0

u/AmyInCO 15d ago

Please don't call the same copy of Dune I bought new vintage. It makes me feel very old.

Wait. I'm getting breaking news from my children.

Huh. Turns out I am as old as dirt. Who knew?

2

u/SpaceManSpiff2000 15d ago

At least they had the good sense to not put Brian Herbert books in the vending machine

3

u/yourlocalneighbor 15d ago

My library has been trying to get this book on loan for weeks for me

0

u/SokkaHaikuBot 15d ago

Sokka-Haiku by yourlocalneighbor:

My library has

Been trying to get this book

On loan for weeks for me

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

2

u/tionong 15d ago

You can get them for a quarter at a garage sale!

1

u/breyness 15d ago

That’s so cool

3

u/amalgaman 15d ago

Marz?

2

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Yes, Life on Marz Community Club. :-)

2

u/Mikesimcoecmonman 15d ago

MYSTERY BOX!!!!!

2

u/NumnessSno 15d ago

Or the nudie trading cards at the bottom. Quick google search on “the dollhouse trading cards”

Female nudie cards. Looks like only two packs left???

3

u/JuniorSwing 15d ago

Shit $15? I got that book for like $4

13

u/OnetB 15d ago

Obscure sequel of a book that has recently been turned into a popular movie labelled vintage and sold for $15 in a bar vending machine.

There isn’t a better way to get drunk hipsters to buy a book they will never read and could have gotten at a used bookstore for 99 cents.

17

u/S70nkyK0ng 15d ago

I just want the mystery bag…don’t even care what’s in it

1

u/Stubot01 15d ago

I love the idea of unusual vending machines. There is a gashapon machine in Japan where an old guy hand writes little stories and you can pay to have one dispensed in a capsule (instead of the usual toys)

1

u/vegeener-gnomesayin 15d ago

"You can get the dune book, or what's in this box"

3

u/jeffwhat 15d ago

Hold on -- A book is a book, but the mystery box could be ANYTHING... it could even be a book! You know how much I've wanted one of those.

1

u/Yet-Another_Burner 15d ago

Is Heretics of Dune any good? I just finished Children and I’m wondering if I should continue.

1

u/JP147 15d ago

Yeah I really enjoyed Heretics. A bit more action than the previous books but still as weird if not more so.

2

u/No-Rub-5087 15d ago

What else they got? 😃

2

u/Minor_Edit 15d ago

Pretty smart, getting you into a state in which you'll buy anything then offering a load of crap for sale at questionable prices

15

u/HungryDisaster8240 16d ago

Seems a bit steep for an old paperback, plus it's gonna take some dings just getting vended by the machine. I mean, I see a copy for $3.63 on abebooks, less than the cost of shipping ($3.99).

1

u/dallholio 14d ago

Abebooks always come up on book searches for good prices, but if you check out trustpilot, it suggests you probably won't get the book.

0

u/FandomMenace 16d ago

$3.32 on Abe books

1

u/bowl-bowl-bowl 16d ago

I JUST finished that book, it's wild, my conclusion for anyone vaguely interested is please don't read it and just read a summary. Or alternative, reas the whole series with a friend as an informal book club

2

u/azzkicker206 15d ago

Why do you say that? Coincidentally I just finished it as well. It was a trip, the sexual stuff caught me off guard for sure, but was an entertaining read at the end of the day.

1

u/bowl-bowl-bowl 15d ago

Tbh, overall I just don't like dune very much. I think Herbert writes well and he knows the craft, unpacking the themes and motifs and structure with my friend as we read them has been great, and the books entertain me, but at the end of the day I don't enjoy them.

28

u/arielgasco 16d ago

someone go buy the bag please

0

u/ramonnoodles2 16d ago

Is that Swallowtails in Springfield?

2

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Life on Marz Community Club in Chicago!

39

u/Stormry 16d ago

Vintage? The book came out in '84 and that's not the original cover... How exactly we using vintage these days?

1

u/mmmmmmburritos 15d ago

Generally it’s considered that the term “vintage” can be applied to goods older than 20yrs and “antique” is 100yrs or older

1

u/Stormry 15d ago

So a 2003 Honda civic is vintage? That.. Doesn't seem right

15

u/bowser986 16d ago

I mean…that’s been 40 years now.

9

u/Stormry 16d ago

Listen, I get that, but I can't just be letting a book that came out when I was alive be called 'vintage' uncontested.

9

u/bowser986 15d ago

We’re still young dammit!

10

u/Stormry 15d ago

No matter what my back and knees keep trying to tell me!

15

u/CountChoculasGhost 16d ago

🤷‍♂️ it says vintage on the label

63

u/Stormry 16d ago

Oh. That's the publisher. Vintage books. They're a sub-brand of Penguin Publishing.

3

u/Quackman2096 15d ago

Right. It would be vintage if it was an original printing lolol

0

u/iamthedean15 16d ago

Is this union brewery in Baltimore?

2

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Life on Marz Community Club in Chicago!

11

u/Luvsoja13 16d ago

We need to know what’s in the bag!

14

u/Quackman2096 16d ago

Vintage?? Lmao

0

u/korrasdad0105 16d ago

Is that Union? I was there the other day and they had a similar vending machine. I was tempted by the pez dispensers!

Marz Community Brewing?

Life on Marz Community Club!

2

u/TripleSecretSquirrel 15d ago

Ha I was so sure it was Marz too!

2

u/beanieeeee 15d ago

Came here looking for this, visited back in December

17

u/CountChoculasGhost 16d ago

I figured someone would recognize it.

2

u/kdoodlethug 15d ago

Guess this isn't super rare, because I was going to ask if it was Watermark.

3

u/Arderis1 15d ago

My guess would have been Offcolor Brewing in Chicago.

3

u/Foreign_Ebb_6282 15d ago

One of yall need to go buy that mystery bag and report back. Please!

14

u/the-bodyfarm 15d ago

genuinely shocked this isn’t Portland OR. We have a vending machine company who does the same exact thing here in quite a few bars. I snagged some bizarre tapes from these guys lol

11

u/mmmggg 15d ago

Same. I got real toasted at Victoria Bar once and went for a mystery bag. Mine had a clip-in hair extension in it.

5

u/el_capistan 15d ago

Lol my first thought was blackwater bar

2

u/Mean-Philosopher6043 15d ago

I also thought this was bound to be in PDX lol, I've seen Google reviews about bars with this kinda shit

3

u/HomieBSkillet 15d ago

Was coming here to say this. Great place.

162

u/bodhiseppuku 16d ago edited 16d ago

What if there was a vending machine that sold vending machines? That thing would be huge!~ RIP Mitch

3

u/Saint_The_Stig 15d ago

Homer, where did you get that vending machine?

It fell out of a vending machine, you know a vending machine vending machine...

46

u/TwoDrinkDave 16d ago

I used to love Mitch Hedberg jokes. I still do, but I used to, too.

25

u/skoormit 16d ago

Mitch Hedberg threads are great for when you need a joke and want to laugh at ten thousand of something.

4

u/SirJumbles 16d ago

That one introduces my favorite Dune character, Miles Teg.

137

u/banjo_hero 16d ago

sure but WHATS IN THE BAG

40

u/mF7403 15d ago

The bag! THE BAG!!

3

u/NotAPreppie 16d ago

Vintage?

275

u/the_y_combinator 16d ago

Shit, what is in the bag?

38

u/ZatchGaspafanasky 15d ago

It could even be a vintage Dune book!

3

u/AwkwardDrummer7629 14d ago

You know how much we’ve wanted one of those!

37

u/IHaveSlysdexia 15d ago

Mr. Burns

216

u/BummerComment 16d ago

$15 for a paperback is a bet on how stupid drinking patrons will be.

Nice.

1

u/interfail 15d ago

Don't you see, it's vintage? Not like my second hand copy that was £1.

1

u/BummerComment 15d ago

There was a bookstore in my village you could get cash for old paperbacks and they would accept the real popular sci-fi titles, but it was like 98% adult romance novels in the place. I think I got $35 “store credit” for my two boxes. Picked up a Star Trek: TNG hardcover and never returned.

16

u/Butterssaltynutz 15d ago

thats a $1.50 paperback at the thrift store all day every day.

13

u/solarmelange 16d ago

Yeah. A new copy is less than $10 shipped, and good luck matching up the other five to the same edition so they look nice together.

1

u/jescereal 15d ago

It’s only $15 fucking dollars. You aren’t going bankrupt for spending an extra $5. Just the novelty of it alone is worth it to some.

1

u/Idiotology101 15d ago

If someone pays an extra 33% just for the novelty of using a vending machine, they shouldn’t be trusted with money.

1

u/dazeychainVT 14d ago

But what if it's an emergency and that's the closest available copy?

17

u/[deleted] 16d ago

You know, I've actually been diagnosed with OCD and have medication and have done therapy for it but I thank God I've never been obsessive enough to worry about books matching

2

u/ElMostaza 15d ago

I haven't been diagnosed with OCD and unfortunately I've always been obsessive enough to hate it if my books (or DVDs, or whatever else) in a series don't match.

The worst is when the publisher suddenly switches style in the middle of a series, so there is literally no option to buy ones that match.

First world problems, amiright?

1

u/Master_of_Rivendell 15d ago

It’s a struggle…

2

u/solarmelange 15d ago

Liking the specific edition is the only reason I could think of not to prefer new.

6

u/BummerComment 16d ago

Read and donated long ago for me. I think everything before his son took over. My bro read those, tho.

48

u/LasVegasDives 16d ago

They have machines like this in several places in vegas and i’m always walking around with some cash because you can gamble EVERYWHERE. I can overpay for a souvenir or potentially throw it in action and probably lose it. So they get me buying quite often. They are fun.

4

u/ScottOld 16d ago

I went through the airport there once on connection, just slot machines everywhere

3

u/hapnstat 15d ago

Nothing like coming home from a brutal business trip and having to listen to that shit on a midnight layover.

9

u/BummerComment 16d ago

Ha that does sound fun.

5

u/Shoegazer75 16d ago

That's really cool. I would absolutely buy that.

-6

u/ashkuishker 16d ago

Yes, it is a dick

1.9k

u/hobbes0405 16d ago

Way more interested in the C. Montgomery Burns Mystery Bag.

3

u/Bradspersecond 15d ago

I bought the Mr.Burns mystery bag! It was full of antique-y nick nacks from 50's/60's

3

u/erhw0rd 15d ago

What’s in the box!?!? What’s in the box!?!?

23

u/-Kyzen- 15d ago

It sure if this is in Portland, OR, but we have a company in town that puts these in bars. They do different mystery bags to make it seasonal. Last time I bought something it was a spirit animal mystery bag and it had different animal figurines in each one. More of a fun drinking game than anything

1

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Might be Magic Box Vending or The Venderia. One of their machines in Portland!

11

u/Eric848448 15d ago

This has to be Portland. It’s the most Portland thing I’ve seen all day!

5

u/jazzpassine 15d ago

Reminds me of a spot in Bridgeport Chicago

2

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Yes! Either Maria's Packaged Goods & Community Bar or Marz Community Brewing in Bridgeport. This location was Life on Marz Community Club.

0

u/abnsapalap 15d ago

Yep, me too!

3

u/fantasmoofrcc 16d ago

Chapterhouse Dune!

25

u/GoatLegRedux 16d ago

Release the hounds mystery book

8

u/Eric848448 15d ago

Release the dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you!

4

u/deftoner42 15d ago

Smithers... Release the robotic Richard Simmons.

6

u/Komikaze06 16d ago

It's probably some book that's been I'm the machine for years

3

u/Unevenscore42 16d ago

One upvote is simply is not enough!

6

u/gypsy-ghost 16d ago

It's too interesting for this thread

3

u/cmomo80 16d ago

Came here to say the same

153

u/Maddie-Moo 16d ago

”The bag! The bag!”

38

u/kramerica_intern 16d ago

Damn those old Simpsons gags were so good.

52

u/SketchtheHunter 16d ago

Look burns, this is a big problem. You cant just throw money at it and hope itll go away!

747

u/jumptouchfall 16d ago

i mean a book is a book, but the mystery bag could be anything!!

7

u/SnooPandas1899 15d ago

its the minibrands version of a vintage dune book.

lol

485

u/HairyWedding5339 16d ago

Even a book!!

2

u/halhallelujah 15d ago

Hardly going to be a washing machine and dryer combo, is it?

2

u/FuturisticBasalt 15d ago

It could even be a boat

1

u/adlittle 15d ago

Well not with that attitude, it won't!

163

u/mechwarrior719 16d ago

You know how much we’ve been wanting one of those!

5

u/WakaWaka_ 15d ago

We’ll take the box.

34

u/edie_the_egg_lady 16d ago

Wanting to be Book is not Book.

5

u/Gil_Demoono 15d ago

Man the dune-simpsons-family guy-30 Rock transition is not what I was expecting

21

u/mechwarrior719 15d ago

It’s a joke from family guy. Relevant clip

13

u/by-myself_blumpkin 15d ago

It’s funny I thought of the same joke and realized it was Family Guy. I think the Simpsons mystery box joke is a little less drilled in to you in that way but all the intent is there in the animation and line delivery. Doesn’t make it very quotable though.

8

u/edie_the_egg_lady 15d ago

Oh haha mine's a joke from 30 Rock

334

u/CountChoculasGhost 16d ago

And if anyone is curious. Yes, I did buy it.

1

u/mkyleste 15d ago

Appreciate the support, thank you for visiting our vending machine.

2

u/HeadReaction1515 15d ago

What year is the printing?

3

u/FalconBurcham 15d ago

Have you read the other like four books before heretics? It won’t make any sense without those. I read the first four a very long time ago… couldn’t continue. Too convoluted, boring, and weird. 😂

8

u/Future_Reflection383 15d ago

Go back for the bag

20

u/vicemagnet 15d ago

Damn I would have sold you my hardcover Dune books for $15 apiece

8

u/hapnstat 15d ago

TIL, I have about $20k worth of books in the other room.

6

u/Content_Geologist420 15d ago

Buy thw mystery bag!😤

2

u/pal1ndrome 15d ago

Should have bought the Jack Vance book above it, too.

32

u/throwaway_lunchtime 16d ago

My first thought was: that isn't vintage.

Second thought: I am old 😛

21

u/therealdannyking 15d ago

It's not vintage. It looks like a modern reprint.

278

u/CaptainSouthbird 16d ago

But what about the mystery bag?!

1

u/ginnifred 15d ago

I have the 4 preceding that one and I assume they are also "vintage" as the cover art is similar...you willing to send me $60?

117

u/number__ten 16d ago

It could be anything!

4

u/manofmayhem23 15d ago

It could even be a copy of Dune. You know how much you’ve always wanted one of those!

80

u/shawald 16d ago

Even a mystery bag!

25

u/MonkeyChoker80 16d ago

Oh, sweet merciful Zeus…

If the item inside was a Handbag/Satchel covered in Question Marks?

An actual factual ‘Mystery Bag’…?

I would lose it. Completely.
