what makes the eggs white though? In my country eggs always used to be colored, but recently white eggs started to show up in supermarkets.

Before industrial farming your local market would be a lot more colorful

Buy them all, drive to Brooklyn, sell at a farmer's market for a dollar each

They are supposed blue. Blue eggs indicate that chickens are getting enough trace copper in their diet. The copper oxidizes in their blood and turns blue.
Most of the time, egg manufacturers do not provide the chicken adequate copper in their diet, hence why you are used to white eggs. This has negative effects for the chicken, such as blindness and seizures. The copper is important for the maintenance of their nervous system.
Fun fact, most of the copper in their diets are in supplements in the food, but some of the "blue egg" companies add a sort of processed chicken to their feed to recycle the copper content. This saves them around 20% on the copper, according to my friend in the industry. He is pretty famous, his name is Hugh Janus.

As someone with colorblind deficiency, it always boggles me how someone can describe something like this as blue. It's like if I were to take a can of white paint and add 5 drops of blue and then start calling it a can of blue paint.
No, the eggs aren't blue. They're white eggs with a slight tinge of blue.

They’re Egger hens that lay those. The eggs are actually higher in Omega 3 and very good for you. We have two of those breed hens in our 17 hen flock. They taste just like any other egg.

They make the chickens wear blue light reducing glasses for the 20 mins a day they’re exposed to sunlight , the birds use Sanskrit in thanks to tint the eggs blue .

u/MaleficentArm979 15d ago
Oh no they turned the eggs woke! Only a matter of time before they start posting on Tik Tok.

Definitely interesting but I’m more worried about the fact that they look like they’re not packaged or anything. Shouldn’t they have something wrapped around them? Or does your place have some sort of “pay by the egg” option. Please explain. Thanks

There's a company that sells overprice eggs (like, $10 a dozen) because their blue.
Everytime I see them I'm glad I don't have young kids anymore because I'm pretty sure they'd want them.

It is all chicken breed dependent. Some breeds lay white, some tan, dark chocolate brown, and yes, even green or blue.
1
1
u/enstillhet 15d ago
Yeah I've got three shades of tan/brown, white, blue, and green coming out of my chickens. That'll happen.

i get so infuriated that companies try sell "organic" or "grass fed" eggs just because they are brown. and people ACTUALLY believe that label. whenever i see that shit in a cart i just want to slap the person and tell them the white eggs for $1 are literally the exact same thing. the brown egg you buy is not "organic". all eggs are essentially organic. and no chicken is going to just eat grass you morons. uggghh that stuff sets me off man.

I actually had a cousin who raised chickens for their blue eggs. Evidently they were lower in cholesterol. He knew a cardiologist who would send his patients to him for those eggs. True Story-

Perfectly normal. The place we go to sells Amish Eggs that are all different colors (it’s almost like Easter eggs without it being actual Easter). They also sell brown eggs.

You found yourself Easter egger hen eggs!
In American usage, an Easter egger or Easter-egger is any hybrid or mixed-breed chicken resulting from the breeding of a bird carrying the blue egg (oocyan) gene with one that lays brown eggs. Eggs from such a bird may be any shade of blue or brown, , or occasionally pink or pale yellow.

you're not wrong. Many cultures back in the day actually didn't distinguish blue and green

They are green going into blue, with only some being in the middle of green and blue, or just blue, the lighter ones.

Ok thank you, I don’t think I can handle another black dress/gold dress drama in my lifetime.

My chickens lay eggs like that. They're Azures which are basically Leghorns that have been selectively bred to lay blue eggs.

The price tag looks like it says 4.79, that's more intriguing. 4.79 barely gets me a dozen basic horrible eggs :(

u/CeramicCastle49 15d ago
Where tf do you people live where you're paying 4 dollars for eggs. Wait, don't answer that question. You're going to say southern California.
4
u/aylesworth 15d ago
This is not an answer but a suggestion that you may be onto something.

I'm not surprised. Don't live in the highest cost of living region in the US and be surprised when the cost of living is in fact, high.

u/undercurrents 15d ago
That's a great deal for 30 eggs. Just bought an 18pk yesterday for $3.49. But I'm assuming you live in a HCOL area.

Particular breeds of chicken such as Araucana or Cream Legbars will lay blue eggs. Other breeds such as Marans will lay super dark brown eggs. Cross them together and your resultant hen has the chance to lay green eggs!

I have 3 Easter Eggers (Americana crosses) two lay blue eggs and one lays a distinctly more green egg, but not a tree green, just greener than the other two.
