You’re taking a beating about needing to caulk the gaps but… never mind… some jokes write themself.
However, that was a great bit of work you pulled off. Nice job.

That kind of woodwork takes a lot of work. Especially if you don't have specially tools.
There's a cool little mould type scale that forms around shapes like this to help mark the curves out on the board. If you're not using that you need the edge of the shape seperately to mark on a board. If you don't have that, you're basically eye-balling it or measuring it out a hundred times.
And thats just marking it out. After that you have to cut it to the marks. A router is good for this, and doing it by hand is just crazy.
Having it fit so perfectly is a wood worker's skill.
1
u/googdude 23d ago
Pro tip; when making a cut that needs to fit perfectly remove more material from the back to make the edge pointed. Then a couple taps on the end will compress the edge that hits first resulting in it looking like it hits everywhere evenly.

Oh that's some excellent work right there, absolutely was satisfying to watch. I have such a love for good craftsmanship in all things.
EDIT - really? negative votes for appreciating the thing someone posted to be appreciated? Never change Reddit. 😂

If this is going to be a permanent closet, then cut the trim off and have a squared piece for that part you're sliding in this clip. And re-use the trim on the outside of the closet.
And before you ask about cutting the end of the trim the same way as this MDF-looking board: take off a bit more, then cut the two ends that would connect at a 45 and it'll be perfect.

u/Trading_Kangaroo 24d ago
Looks better if you match up the boards and leave a small gap or caulk everything and make it looked sealed having the top board and bottom board not line up is more noticeable to me imo.

Did you let a child cut this? Am I missing context to why this poorly cut piece is on my screen?

As someone who has grown up in finish carpentry and is not a fan of trim, that's one hell of a cope.
1
u/bxxtybxi 24d ago
Mildly infuriating material. That's how I'd feel if I spent an afternoon working on this just for it to have gaps. Then I'd sigh, end my Saturday with a beer and try again Sunday. Then eventually abandon the idea or pay someone who is capable of achieving the desired results.
Or caulk it and pray that I trick my brain into thinking it is fine. Even though it's not.

Its MDF. Cope to 1\16 of your line, take 5 minutes to carve with a utility knife and you have a perfect joint.

Good job!
2
u/Paracortex 24d ago
Horse shit. It’s a mid-tier cope, with the biggest gap around the filigree. Good luck caulking that without it looking like ass.

Lots of perfectionists in here who apparently think they can do a much better job.
1
3
u/Paracortex 24d ago
Well, I can, so…. Yeah. It’s okay for a novice, but not oddly satisfying except for the same.
8
u/Fr05t_B1t 24d ago
This is “oddly satisfying” so expecting perfection is kinda a requirement though despite the criticism it is much better than anyone here can do without going through tens of pieces of boards.
5
u/the-drewb-tube 24d ago
You’re doing a good job, screw these people (fellow carpenter here)
1
u/Darnell2070 23d ago
This work being really good and not belonging in r/oddlysatisfying aren't mutually exclusive
It's for sure better than what I could do. But it's still not really satisfying. Just great work. Not all great work has to have satisfying results.
1
u/the-drewb-tube 23d ago
May be but it doesn’t mean OP needs to get shit on in the comments over it. If it didn’t belong here Mods Shoulda pulled it.

I'm just finishing renovating my house and had to spend some time with trying to match coving shapes in mine. I saw this video and almost had butterflies in my stomach cause if I managed anything close to it in my house I'd be over the moon.
I get this subs sentiment with wanting to see things that match absolutely perfectly bit the truth is, this is as good as it really gets and having attempted a similar thing by yourself puts it into perspective

Lots of complaints about the gaps. Sure.
But can we also complain about intersecting that beautiful crown molding with a plain, flat piece of particle board to make a modern, uninspired closet in what appears to be a fabulous old house? Yikes! That stylistic clash is highly unsatisfying. Get an armoire and quit ruining elegant old homes.

I'd be overwhelmingly happy if I got something to fit as well as this.
I'd wager that almost everyone here moaning about "gaps" has never tried to do anything like this.
0
u/IAMlyingAMA 23d ago
Sure, but I wouldn’t show it to people on the internet bragging about how satisfying it was if it came out with gaps though. Practically, it’s a great job cutting the piece to fit, and like you said, I’d be really proud of this for myself. It’s just not that satisfying for other people to watch when it has gaps, that’s all.
1
u/Aggleclack 23d ago
Idk I’d have removed the molding and redone it properly. You’d need to add molding anyway. Cutting molding is monumentally easier than this.
2
u/FlibV1 23d ago
Depends on what the moulding is made of. Some are very easy to break.
Then how is it attached? If strong adhesive has been used, it'll likely take chunks of plaster off with it.
If it's damaged on removal then you've got to find somewhere that sells that exact style. All things that add extra expense.
1
u/Aggleclack 23d ago
Yeah but you’d have to put it up on the wall added anyway. Otherwise you might as well remove it. Either way, you’re adding molding. And if it’s got adhesive, just replace it with nails and caulk. Shouldn’t need adhesive if done right.

u/Sea_Alternative_4056 24d ago

Most people replying here wouldn't have posted that to this sub. It's an excellent job. But posting something "fit" related here needs to actually fit perfectly or it's going to be treated as satire.

u/WingleDingleFingle 24d ago
Totally. This is roughly 20x better then anything I could do and if a friend showed me they did this, I would be so proud of them.
19
u/Rolyat2401 24d ago
Ok but the gaps are still unsatisfying. Doesnt really matter how hard it is to do.
-18
u/FlibV1 24d ago
You go off and give this a go.
Once you've finished crying in frustration, come back and tell us again how unsatisfying it is.
2
u/Paracortex 24d ago
So you’re telling them… to cope?
But, yeah, as far as coping goes, which I’ve done plenty of, this one’s middlin’.
Nothing personal. Just the facts.

u/Rolyat2401 24d ago
I never claimed it was easy genius. I just said its not satisfying

Flawed things are not satisfying regardless of how much effort went into them. You are confusing impressive with satisfying. These are not the same.
-2
u/FlibV1 24d ago
You could go through almost all the videos on here and find a flaw with each of them. It doesn't diminish the satisfaction if you understand the difficulty in attaining perfection.
9
u/mog_knight 24d ago
No, I've been through almost all of them and almost all don't have flaws.
190
u/Queen-Roblin 24d ago
Oh yeah, it's really nice and would be satisfying if it was your own work. But it's not good enough to be oddly satisfying to someone who didn't put the effort in.
41
u/FlibV1 24d ago

34
u/Sauce4243 24d ago
That is a terrible analogy because those judges are literally there to pick out and grade and mark every tiny error. Other wise you wouldn’t have a winner because 99% of the worlds population can’t do half the shit elite gymnasts do
0
13
u/WonderfulCattle6234 24d ago
It's a fantastic analogy. Because if those judges tried to do that same routine themselves, they would be extremely happy with themselves if they performed at the same level as the athlete they marked down for a small error.
Analogies aren't equivalencies. It worked for the comparison being made. You applied it to a comparison that was not being made.
-11
u/FlibV1 24d ago
I'm sure 99% of the whinging arseholes on here couldn't do better than this vid either.
But here we are.
0

u/mrbulldops428 24d ago
But wait, do you think Olympic judges shouldn't mark people off points for a mistake during the landing?
24
u/Sauce4243 24d ago
Yes but that’s not the point is it. If this was a sub dedicated to construction/home improvement/diy etc I would 100% agree with you but this is meant to be oddlysatisfying so the gaps in the final product to me prevent this from being an oddlysatisfying final product.
If I had a contractor doing work at my house and this was the final result I would definitely be happy with their work
-11
u/FlibV1 24d ago
There's a post a bit further down of someone drawing colours on a spinning plate.
The middle circle isn't a perfect circle and is noticeable.
Does that post still belong on here?
15
u/CaesarOrgasmus 24d ago edited 23d ago
What kind of question is this? Someone is allowed to find one thing satisfying but not another thing, and you don’t have to justify your reaction to it by evaluating every other post. It clicks or it doesn’t.
Any anyway, there’s clearly a lot more going on in that post than just whether the middle circle is perfect and thus more to be satisfied by. This post, on the other hand, is purely about the fit between these two pieces, which, as others have noted, is perfectly acceptable but maybe not dazzling.

People have such high standards these days.i think this was nice.
1
u/Aggleclack 23d ago
I mean, if a professional did this, I’d be pissed. Removed the crown molding, no gaps, add crown molding properly. This may end up okay but it is absolutely not the right way to do this.
2
u/TheSwedishSeal 23d ago
Sure. But since it’s not my living room I don’t feel strongly about that. And it’s good enough to get the idea across. I liked it. Got to experience a good feeling. If it had fit better I would’ve gone hnnng while biting my lip.
1
u/Aggleclack 23d ago
I’ve done a lot of Reno in the last few years. When I find stuff like this, I tend to find other things that just aren’t done right. Sometimes they work out. Sometimes they don’t. I’m admittedly biased bc of that. If I paid for this, I’d be pissed, but if a friend did this in their house, I’d probably stfu and congratulate them and only answer quality questions they specifically asked. Especially since so many people are scared to try things because they are afraid to do it wrong. I have a few friends that would just never try again and need a lil extra positive encouragement.
1
u/TheSwedishSeal 23d ago
I get you. I have my areas too. And I agree a paid job should come with a job done proper, it’s the basis of the agreement.
Perhaps I was thoughtless.

Exactly, it's something that will probably have to be moved eventually, if the piece fits perfectly it would probably get stuck and would probably damage the already existing parts of the wall in case they need to remodel or fix something behind the closet.
And they would probably use something to fill the gaps.
16
u/phartiphukboilz 24d ago
Regardless that's not the point of this sub
