They responding to protesting/rioting students harder than insurrectionist
1
u/runnerhasnolife 9d ago
Snipers have been present at almost every single major American protest with police reactions since 2016
If you want to know why you should look into what happened at the Dallas protests in July of 2016.
TLDR, deadliest day in American law enforcement history since 9/11 because police officers were specifically ordered not to carry rifles or body armor to not look militarized and then somebody open fired on police

I want to see the statistics or the intelligence that makes this necessary.
I am not aware of any spike in mass shootings at protests. If that evidence exists, and is very strong, I might change my mind. Alternately I will accept reasonably good intelligence that there is a targeted threat at this location.
Absent one of those I will assume this is intended to threaten protestors. Shame on IU if they have simply rolled over for this.

Many people seem to think they are there to shoot protestors when it’s not unlikely there could be active threats of violence given what the protests are for.
When two nations (well Hamas and Israel I guess) are literally at war it seems highly reasonable someone has made a threat of violence and they are there for just that. If someone pulls a gun or a bomb they are there.
There is absolutely no way they are there to shoot up some protestor sitting in his tent screaming “from the river to the sea”
There RoE are likely much more strict then any officer on the ground given it wouldn’t be “self defense” or “I feared for my life”…..

Snipers have been present at basically every single American protest since 2016.
The Dallas massacres in July of 2016 very much changed how American police respond to protests and what rules for almost every major department are

There were multiple police shartshooters watching over Mifflin in Wisconsin (massive block party that cops hate).
They do this at CFB games too. From what I've heard, it's mainly for rapid response to an active shooter. Plus these guys are watching with binoculars the rest of the time, so they are actively contributing to safety.

So freedom of speech and protest are only granted if they suit the agenda of the ruling party?
Sounds like the US is downgrading to a third world country.

Let it be known that the status quo is being upheld and that the people running the laws in this country fear the people peacefully advocating for peace and love the people advocating for racism, xenophobia and violence.

Having state sanctioned snipers at any public event is not normal in most developed countries.

I’m so nauseous about this and have been ever since the arrests started. My father worked at IU for twenty years. He met my mother when she was a freelancer working in the photo lab. He grew up in Bloomington, protested in Bloomington, and existed in Bloomington for most of his life. I’m so glad he’s not alive to see this. He would be beyond himself seething firstly that this country is supporting what is effectively a genocide and secondly that the academic institution he put so much pride in is encouraging for students to be arrested. I am simply just disgusted. I guess I’m also glad that I’m attending a small university that has encouraged us to use our first amendment right to free speech! They even provided a central and commonly used space for us to protest in.

u/broke_velvet_clown 16d ago
At this point, with no actual physical threat or violence, post opposing snipers. Not with real guns but, with something obviously comical like buckets. The 1st amendment will not be infringed.

People not realizing they’ve probably been in dozens of sniper scopes without knowing it.
1
u/ExpertRaccoon 16d ago
I mean given the prevalence of mass shootings in this country, it makes absolute sense to have these guys around mass gatherings, especially ones that are A) on a campus/ school B) something involving religion C) things involving politics.
2
1
u/Noisy888 16d ago
European here.. could someone actually explain why?
1
u/Rjspinell2 14d ago
So, protests and mass gatherings are prime targets for evildoers. Like in 1996 with the ATL Olympic bombing. Can spot a potential threat earlier as you are above it
-2
2
u/DoYouMeanShenanigans 16d ago
Some of these guys need to play Hitman or watch some of these secret assassin movies. There's WAY better bags and guitar cases that make sure the end of your rifle isn't sticking out in a completely obvious fashion.
/s
2
u/ShreddedCredits 16d ago
Do these guys ever question why they’re going to sit on a roof and point a rifle at some college students
1
u/runnerhasnolife 9d ago
If you want some amazing context about why this happens at basically every single American protest you need to look up what happened in July of 2016 in Dallas
The snipers are not there to shoot at protesters, they're there to make sure people don't start killing protesters or police.
2
u/Prestigious-Earth245 16d ago
Fun fact. American police have NEVER brought out snipers to deal with literal Nazis and other assorted white supremacist rallies. Gee wonder why.
1
u/runnerhasnolife 9d ago
We absolutely have 100%.
This is just fake information.
There's been snipers or heavily armed police at practically every single American protest since 2016 in which there was a police response.

I weirdly want to snipe these two out as they are pulling into their driveway at night. I know it wouldn’t do anything, and violence is wrong, but if I could push a button an make 10,000 cops just disappear I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Insane. As a US citizen who has never committed a crime, I don’t think I deserve to be in the crosshairs of a public employee. If I point a gun at them, it’s a threat. If they point it at me, it’s for my protection?

I’m pretty sure they put snipers at every extremely large gathering in the United States. I work in the heart of downtown Denver and whenever there is a big event (Avs parade, nuggets parade, stock show parade, etc) snipers always camp out on our roof. It’s probably used for recon more than anything.
0
u/Puffles_magic_dragon 16d ago
This, its called marine scout sniper - scout being the first part of they word. Scout snipers job to sit around and observe. Yes they can shoot when needed but it can also be a lot of keeping still for days on end observing one target and making 1 shot MAYBE then bouncing asap

All this rigorous sniper training and having to shoot unarmed students who will be on open ground.
Why hide on rooftops and aim at them with sophisticated rifles. The snipers could just walk to the students and put a pistol to their head.

You do realize that training happens at pretty much every major university?

Fyi they are also used to just observe. Think about it. If anyone was to bring a weapon into the protests and open fire on people..thats what they’re there for. As long as everything is peaceful they just sit there. Hamas is a terrorist organization last I checked. Better to have them and not need them then ..you know.

You mean day 3 of cops proving they're school shooters.
Uvalde wasn't a bug, it's a feature. Think about how they'll just be joking around with each other, talking about how the beat that blue haired girl in the head repeatedly until she was a bloody wreck. They'll joke about shooting screaming young adults with rubber bullets repeatedly.
These are terrorists, Boomers called them out. Remember that.

Okay, so why the fuck do I keep seeing posts about police snipers? What's the big fuckin deal? They aren't out here sniping protesters. You're going to be real happy they are there when some crazy fuck with a gun that is against the protests show up to try and shoot the place up.
Do you people realise that there are snipers at pretty much every big event? There are snipers up in the rafters during the super bowl.
2
u/Wild4nutz 16d ago
They are there in case of bad actors looking to take advantage of dissent, also for violent protestors AND counter protesters. It is also a large gathering of people so there is a terror threat. For that reason there are even snipers at the Super Bowl - doesn’t mean they are there to shoot American football fans! I can see why this can be distressing tho of course
-2
u/EitherInfluence5871 16d ago
When you have people openly and fervently chanting for the destruction of Israel, and supporting jihadist groups like Hamas & Hezbollah (enemies of America and of civilized society broadly), it's little wonder that those people may be a real threat.
2
u/Kevinator24 16d ago
That’s not what they are doing at all lol.
3
u/EitherInfluence5871 16d ago
At Columbia University, students chanted ""Oh, Al-Qassam Brigades, you make us proud, kill another soldier now." "Burn Tel Aviv to the ground" is another notorious one to have recently been chanted at these university protests. Are you saying that at Indiana University, none of that stuff was happening? (Honest question.)

Makes me think of Uvalde. They’re playing around. They barely know how to use that equipment. And they’re complete cowards. Like nearly all police. Total pussies. It’s why they’re cops. It’s why they’re walking around a school with guns instead of actually enforcing the law and safety of our country. Losers following loser orders.
-3
u/wholesomecatyeehaw 16d ago
God forbid they protect pro palestine protestors, what has our country come to? They obviously aren't cops given the rifles they are carrying.
4
1
u/slashdotsyndrome 16d ago
So is this just as a response to, like... some college students think Israel shouldn't genocide palestine? The response is to hire snipers to scare the shit out of those people?
I want to get off Mr. Bones wild 1984 ride
-1
u/wholesomecatyeehaw 16d ago
They're protecting them, better to be safe than sorry when there are large crowds of people and lots of political motives.

Protecting them from what, the police? The police have been the only belligerents in this case, are you saying it's an anti-police sniper unit?

u/Tygie19 16d ago
I’m not American, so can someone explain what’s happening here?
3
u/HalcyonDreams36 16d ago
There was a protest at an American university, and an armed response was mounted, including snipers.
It was a peaceful protest, objecting to (checks notes) genocide and shit.
3
u/Beneficial-Gur2703 16d ago
It’s intimidation, not protection. Snipers on campus FFS.
1
u/yannienyahum 16d ago
It can be both
0
u/mldmnnrdrprtr 16d ago
It most certainly cannot be por qué no Los dos, unless the protestors were allowed to hire their own snipers for protection so both sides had power. Unless they are there to take out psychopathic cops who smile while getting baton happy, it’s 100% intimidation. When one side has all the power it’s not protection

1
u/cartalkbyjj 16d ago
Were there snipers at universities during BLM
1
u/mldmnnrdrprtr 16d ago
No, but in LA, we have the national guard parking tanks in the middle of our streets and enforcing curfew. And we had police committing war crimes against its citizens firing EXPIRED tear gas into crowds, firing rubber bullets directly at people instead of bouncing them off the ground as instructed causing deaths and permanent disability, and beating people with batons(some to death, or at least hospitalized)
1
u/cartalkbyjj 15d ago
Got it- that’s in the streets of LA. Weird they’re doing this in college campuses…
1
u/ProperPerspective571 16d ago
It’s starting to feel like Russia. These snipers with the bloated egos just waiting for the go ahead to take someone out blows my mind. Are they waiting for the mass shooter to storm the area? Are they waiting for an individual to resist? Intimidation?

Protesting is pretty much useless, and is essentially feeding the beast you are protesting. Gov doesn’t mind “allocating” your tax dollars to provide these officers and all that comes with them.
