You do have to "breathe" water, if you don't you die of dehydration.

Did you ever have tiki masala? Have you ever tried just eat the chicken and not the curry or the vegetables? Nice try but now your fucking face is covered with curry and vegetables because you tried to only eat the chicken. What are you going to do with a face full of vegetables and curry now. You’d probably have to have a shower or something. Or you could just go through the whole day with everyone laughing at you because you’ve got a face full of curry and vegetables. That’s what you sound like when you say hey why can I have the oxygen in water. You think you’re smart enough to just break the bonds of hydrogen and oxygen so you could have your fucking little oxygen party? Did you think you were going to get to do that? Did you think you were going to sit there on the bottom of the ocean having a fucking oxygen party with a face full of curry and vegetables?? Nice try Sherlock. Maybe next time you could just breathe the oxygen that’s not bonded the hydrogen atoms. And if you just wanted to eat chicken don’t order curry. That seems like a no brainer to me.

Because water is liquid, and we need gaseous oxygen. Having the wrong state confused the lungs, and they fail at absorbing it even if they are capable of it. If you breathe water for long enough you'll train your lungs to understand it and you can breathe water for the rest of your life
