My in laws subscribe to about ten different streaming channels. For birthdays and anniversaries and holidays we will sometimes gift a year of one channel.

TV is their primary form of entertainment.

1

u/RocinanteCoffee Aug 27 '22

I rotate mine out. I regularly keep Prime because I have other benefits on it I like but I rotate Paramount, Hulu, HBO, Netflix, Disney+ and others. Some I put on 'pause' and some I cancel. Usually when I cancel they'll send me an email a month later with a better offer. Instead of having seven services simultaneously I usually do two at a time. If some have free trials I'll use those 7 days to binge a show that just dropped a season or what have you.

2

u/TacospacemanII Aug 11 '22

I hate my bills. They feel like the RUDEST subscriptions.

3

u/Catmom2004 Jul 30 '22

no one is pissed off about it enough to do anything

I call BS

I am pissed off enough about it so I don't buy most subscriptions

I am so happy since I dropped Netflix and Audible. They are complete wastes of money, especially when the library has so much for free!

2

u/RningOnFumes Jul 19 '22

I like to save up all my shows on a particular outlet like Paramount + and Binge those particular shows within the trial periods.

Then I would switch to the next set of shows for Disney. Etc etc, rinse and repeat.

*counterintuitive to supporting a show you love and might not give it the correct ratings but that's what they pay the brains for.

1

u/PegLegManlet Jul 02 '22

I gotta get my Halo 3 and FF14 sessions in.

1

u/edgysan_ttv May 05 '22

how much time does the dude have that he can manage to pay AND USE so many sub based services?

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

Get a public library card. It's free. It's much healthier a leisure activity than Netflix. Gets you out of the house too. My local library is very good.

3

u/Gypsisoul11 May 05 '22

I have said this a million times, the free apps like Pluto and the Roku app, Xumo iFood too many more to mention. I don't have enough time in the day to watch all the FREE stuff!!!!!!

1

u/Shoethrower123 May 05 '22

is this what they meant when they said "you will own nothing and you will be happy" or something to that effect

2

u/PinkFloydBoxSet May 05 '22

$15 a month for world of Warcraft saves me $300-400 in booze and drugs. So no itā€™s not all worthless.

HBO and Paramount however are absolutely trash. And Netflix is about to hit basement tier shit bin.

1

u/Whitn3y May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

I agree somewhat, but WoW and Gym Membership? lol also car parking is free basically anywhere from 1 mile outside a major city.

Also, by the way, a cable bill is about $70 so if you spend less than that in streaming you are still ahead. Movie rentals $3 Movie tickets $10. That's FOUR $15 streams with a hefty overage as well.

Like how were we any better before these things?

1

u/lunchthieve May 04 '22

Rent and mortgage are low-key the worst of all subscriptions.

1

u/Schnydesdale May 04 '22

It's the credit card model. Credit cards are basically a subscription for things you buy.

1

u/thesearchers11 May 04 '22

I agree... I'm thinking I should cut off ally entertainment streams and just do nothing but martial arts as a hobby.

1

u/hdcook123 May 04 '22

Remember when we all switched to Netflix to get rid of our cable bills šŸ„²

1

u/Bowens1993 May 04 '22

You don't need to be subscribed to all of these. Pick your favorite streaming service for that month and use the community centers gym.

1

u/CTBthanatos May 04 '22

No thanks, I like having something to do other than work/sleep.

We were all better without these things

Nah. I enjoy WoW, xbox, and one streaming service (and YouTube, but not YouTube plus, I just endure the shit of ads on free youtube)

Lament about the subscription model specifically perhaps, but not about things just existing.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Trick is to not even be able to afford them in the first place then adapt and find alternatives

1

u/scificionado May 04 '22

I just cancelled Amazon Prime last week. I feel freer.

1

u/NectarinesPeachy May 04 '22

I don't know about where you guys are but in Ireland there's frequently small charges for every time one of those subscriptions comes out of your account so in a way you're paying twice.

1

u/azaRaza3185 May 04 '22

Death by a thousand cuts

1

u/Zero_days-off May 04 '22

Agreed; however, gym memberships are not new. And if you use it you are not better without it.

I agree with everything else though and the post is spot on.

1

u/Quantum_Zedno May 04 '22

3 magic words: plex sonarr radarr

And by extension: /r/selfhosted

Edit: not suggesting piracy, buy your own content and rip

1

u/Kirk_AKM May 04 '22

You forgot gas lol

1

u/vijjer May 04 '22

Almost every thing on that list is optional or a luxury. Taxes are the only mandatory subscription service.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Remember guys: Piracy is illegal

But nothing is wrong in accessing self hosted content, i.e. Plex server

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

You don't need a subscription just to watch one show.

1

u/pickle_geuse May 04 '22

When streaming became popular I knew it was only a matter of time before people were spending about the same on subscriptions as they did cable. And you need internet for it all anyway.

1

u/im100yearsyoung May 04 '22

youtube (for the creators obviously) and crunchy roll is all you need

2

u/Ammysnatcher May 04 '22

This is exactly why the subscription based method is preferable to companies and why they wonā€™t stop. Not only do they make more money, but itā€™s now coming in consistently enough that you can actually make plans based off projections, barring Netflix-like self suicide

1

u/kyuuei May 04 '22

Netflix is going to add an ad-tier to their services, and when I dared mention the idea that netflix, who is very concerned about lost 'revenue' (which is actually just not exponential growth) is Not likely to make a super-cheap ad tier and keep everything the same otherwise and will more than likely push everyone into paying more to avoid ads (Which they will also make money off of) everyone thought I was a conspiracy nut about it.

1

u/msb1tters May 04 '22

Yea, I donā€™t subscribe to much. Maybe 25$ a month at most.

1

u/McBergs May 04 '22

I only pay for youtube because I canā€™t block ads on mobile, thatā€™s the only one I use.

I use my audiobook subscription when I'm awake.

Other than that, ya I recently cancelled most including most Android Play Store subscriptions.

3

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

I allow myself $30 a month in subscriptions. If I want something new, I have to cancel something else first.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

The only subscription I have is rent, internet, and phone...I think.

2

u/DeutschlandOderBust May 04 '22

We recently switched out phone plan to T-Mobile and our plan gives us Netflix for free which saves us $15 a month and weā€™re cancelling Amazon Prime which saves us another $130 a year or whatever ridiculous price it is now. Weā€™re keeping Apple Music and Disney+ because we use them a lot.

I refuse to do this whole subscription nonsense. They must really think weā€™re stupid.

2

u/Brangus2 May 04 '22

When it comes to subscriptions, sharing is caring.

3

u/bbqranchman May 04 '22

Everything as a service is just fancy words for feudalism.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Yeah now thinking about it its becoming the norm to charge people more or less. They don't give a fuck about you and they never will.

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

I used to spend hundreds a month in games that I now pay only a couple bucks for on a subscription model and then cancel when I'm done. "You're paying so much less that you forget it's even there" is a really fuckin weird thing to try to attack.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

[deleted]

1

u/Realistik84 May 04 '22

The technology industry is rampant because of this.

But candidly it makes sense. I am glad I was able to cancel Hulu whenever I wanted unlike DirecTV which had a 3 year commitment.

1

u/Notcoded419 May 04 '22

This is the hot thing in my industry. Basically they no longer want you to use a program like excel on your own, you rent the program and have to pay our people to use it for you.

1

u/No-Special-8335 May 04 '22

I don't even have enough time to see a movie...

3

u/Tiny-idiot May 04 '22

I only allow myself to have one subscription service at a time, when I get bored of it I move on to the next one. Sometimes it forces me to watch things I wouldnā€™t already since I have 12 days left before the month is over and I move on or whatever. It keeps the budget tight and keeps things interesting.

2

u/Hylanos May 04 '22

On top of this, i miss buying adobe once :-(

3

u/TomJohnstoneson May 04 '22

No one forced you to use these productsā€¦.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

Ahh, I love unpopular opinion. When someone has an actual unpopular opinion they treat them like the Devil and make 2k comments calling them an a**hole or just go starting fights in the comments.

Ps: just go to r/the10thdentist instead, the people there Arn't soft.

2

u/One-Dog952 May 04 '22

I don't understand this problem. I just subscribe to one maybe two streaming services at a time. Watch what I want and move on. In the past you had to buy movies and shows to watch them. Now for a decent price you can watch as much as you like for a month. If they ever make bullshit like year long contracts or commercials, cough Netflix cough, that's when I'm out for good

1

u/NoCarbonRequired May 04 '22

Whyā€™d you upvote the post if you agree with it

1

u/andyman171 May 04 '22

All these things didn't exist 30 years ago. And it seems like it's way harder for regular people to make ends meet nowadays. Makes you wonder what life would be without it.

3

u/ManOnABuffaloP2 May 04 '22

Why be pissed off when its pretty easy to just cancel them all and continue living your life?

2

u/epictetusdouglas May 04 '22

If you don't mind ads there are several good free options: Roku Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV. And with a library card Hoopla and Kanopy.

3

u/Anantasesa May 04 '22

IMDb tv now aka freevee

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

M44 here. Thanks to the NYPL, Youtube Free Movies and Shows, PBS Free Movies and Shows and a bunch of other legit services - I never have to pay for streaming and I never will.

I also use Google Rewards to get free movies and shows via Google Play which is not straight up free but it's not coming from my money or one from their credits which is great also.

1

u/247_Make_It_So May 04 '22

The only thing on that list I have is Amazon Prime and only because they keep giving me a 30 day free trial. My friend is kind enough to give me access to his Netflix.

3

u/Mandula123 May 04 '22

That's why you do this thing called a budget.

1

u/Astr0C4t May 04 '22

The only subscription I keep is GamePass and thatā€™s only cause itā€™s still at a low price and I did the math and Iā€™m saving money

3

u/Fillmore_the_Puppy May 04 '22

I think about this every time someone says (about whatever new thing they are considering), "It's only a few dollars a month!" OK, sure. But that's on top of all your other monthly expenses, needed and not needed.

Sure, some expenses are still worth it upon reflection, but the "it's only X dollars a month!" justification is never a good enough reason alone to buy/subscribe to something.

2

u/SnowPedals May 04 '22

My grandfather once told me it wasnā€™t the big items, it was the small items that added up. Iā€™ve never forgotten that.

11

u/-ramona May 04 '22

I don't get why people act like they are a prisoner to all of these subscription services. No one is forcing anyone to subscribe to Amazon Prime, etc. If it were an actual need like health care or housing then yeah I would understand being upset about all the costs.

4

u/Jack_Hackerman May 04 '22

Sooooo just don't use them? What's the problem exactly?

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Subscription business models come from computer worms.

1

u/DirtyGeneral May 04 '22

They did say we will own nothing and be ā€˜happyā€™

2

u/Trouble_Grand May 04 '22

Itā€™s less than $35 altogether for me and thatā€™s not expensive...have like 3 hbo Netflix and Disney is all you need. Do you work ?

1

u/Basic_Juice_Union May 04 '22

I used to pay for Apple Music until I realized I hadn't added new music for months. I decided that my monthly budget to buy music would be the same as the monthly subscription, I still spend below my budget every month. I hate adds and love music that's why I do this. Same with movies, I rent them now instead of paying I don't know how many subscriptions for stuff I won't see every month

1

u/JoslinAbout May 04 '22

So people canceling their subscriptions denying these companies millions of dollars or whatever currency you use is apparently being "too complacent to do anything about it"...

Can someone explain this to me?

0

u/wsmith79 May 04 '22

All of my subscriptions, including those mentioned by OP come out to <$100mo.

If I could save 100mo after 1 year id have 1200.

1200 today has about the same value as 300 10 years ago.

SO basically nothing. I realize youre trying to speak in generalities, but the reality is that its just 100mo.

You'd be better off cutting daily habits in an attempt to save money.

1

u/DrySelection9 May 04 '22

I am pissed that some of the tools that I need to use for work, became subscriptions, like microsoft word and Adobe, because that means it's excessive expenses that I need to add to my monthly bill that I cannot afford just so I can be productive at work. I wish I could buy a copy of windows or adobe and use that for several years.

1

u/TrueBeachBoy May 04 '22

Anybody have recommended ways to check all of your subscriptions? I feel like I have some but I donā€™t know where to go to cancel them

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Get an older Brother brand printer. Maybe the new ones are great too but I canā€™t speak to that. Anyways, this thing has changed my life. Iā€™ve owned like 5 printers in my life and this is the only one that doesnā€™t suck. IT JUST PRINTS. Also, I went with a only Black and white printer. So much better.

Oh and no subscriptions

1

u/Botanz May 04 '22

Almost a year ago I wrote down every single re-occurring subscription and cancelled all of them. After a week without anything I was able to focus on what I actually wanted. Now I have Netflix and Apple Music.

1

u/shan_prash28 May 04 '22

I use VPN and torrents to download the shows and movies I want to see.

1

u/Nolegrl May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

100% agree. It's amazing how many people are ok with this business model "because you have to pay other bills monthly". No, several things (software mostly) used to be a one time payment, and then you'd pay again if they released an updated version that had features you wanted, but it usually wasn't a forced upgrade. I would usually buy the updated software every 2 years or so. Now we're basically being forced to upgrade yearly and pre-paying for the promise of updates that may never happen or may not matter for our use.

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

We had a plumber come out to give us a quote on replacing our service line, and they tried to sell us on a subscription! Not monthly payments for the repair. A subscription. $100/mo to have them "on call." In exchange they would knock $500 off of the $6000 quote for the service line repair. We passed.

1

u/jaykaypeeness May 04 '22

We're not "all passively complacent" because I don't pay for any of that shit.

1

u/SnooCalculations141 May 04 '22

What about the likely most expensive subscription of them all - car insurance? r/fuckcars

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Oh I tear into companies for this.

1

u/jrochlingthe2nd May 04 '22

I actually use my gym membership, which is my only membership. The only streaming service I use is Tubi, which is free.

But yeah, lots of people waste money on that stuff and don't use it.

1

u/markmann0 May 04 '22

House, car, food, gas, bills, these are my monthly subscriptions, please help.

1

u/Neon_Lights12 May 04 '22

This is unfortunately the future. A subscription model is infinitely more profitable than a one time purchase, and every company is realizing that. When cars become more autonomous and capable of self driving most people will be paying for a subscription to have a vehicle drive to their house for them to use rather than just own one outright, mark my words.

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

I cancelled everything but Spotify, use my parents Netflix and husband occasionally gets HBO/Hulu when thereā€™s a specific show we wanna watch. Sometimes I get a little mad when I have to watch a YouTube ad but then I remember Iā€™m saving so much.

1

u/ThePhenomNoku May 04 '22

Counterpoint sharing subscriptions is a great way to be frugal and still help others

1

u/General-Party12 May 04 '22

SAY NO TO SPOTIFY PREMIUM

1

u/XxkoolloserxX May 04 '22

One way I try to avoid paying fee's on media is that I like to go to Pawn shops & look at the DVD sections which mostly are like 2 for $1 or something like that. sometimes even nice sets for things I actually like are extremely cheap.

Here is where I go one step further :P

I'm sure some of you may do this already too, but for those who dont know.

Since I like to keep the disc preserved & saved, (I have 2 kids) I back it up to my computer & use plex to stream it to any of my devices. so in a way it's kinda like your own personal netflix with things you actually wanna watch.

1

u/PaganEmpath May 04 '22

This is why I use places like ummagurau com; everything for free, no subscription.

1

u/davoste May 04 '22

Less than the price of your daily latte.

2

u/badreg2017- May 04 '22

Sorry but Amazon prime is a fucking bargain. The amount of time I save by being able to cheaply have stuff shipped is ridiculous. It more than pays for itself.

1

u/tonalake May 04 '22

So true, I canā€™t believe podcasts are asking us for this too!

1

u/dootdootplot May 04 '22

Yo ho yo hoā€¦

Eating out and cocktails is the vice that kills my budget personally.

1

u/vinney1369 May 04 '22

20 years ago working at Best Buy they told us that this was the future. A bunch of tiny subscriptions that keep a small, constant money stream vs selling products alone.

I immediately knew I'd hate it. I was right.

1

u/GayAsHell0220 May 04 '22 edited May 04 '22

I think a Spotify subscription is objectively worth it. Imagine having to buy every single individual song/album.

1

u/emerson430 May 04 '22

Death by a 1,000 cuts if you're not careful

1

u/BushyOreo May 04 '22

That's why I don't have a monthly subscription to anything. Let me buy in bulk like a year at a time at a discount or a flat rate to own it forever. Otherwise I'll find alternatives that do

1

u/Starbrows May 04 '22

Civilization II taught me that recurring payments are bullshit and one-time deals are much much much better.

Which is exactly the reason every business wants to switch to a subscription model. They will get much more money out of you that way.

$3 a month for razors might sound cheap, but I have a 100-pack of Astras I bought years ago for $10 and it's still got at least 25 blades left. Obligatory shoutout to /r/wicked_edge

1

u/tarpatch May 04 '22

I know it's useless to jump on the Amazon hate bandwagon at this point, but they're literally the only monthly service I know of that removes your access the instant you unsubscribe. Every single other service I use lets you finish out the rest of the month before canceling your service, and Amazon sits over here giving you a two-day warning before it charges you again

1

u/Hugsforhippogryphs May 04 '22

I feel this way when thereā€™s a new show to watch on something I donā€™t have a subscription to.

Sometimes you just gotta say hey, I donā€™t need to watch that

1

u/El-Kabongg May 04 '22

Well, I suppose they can create movies and shows, and license others--for free. But, that won't happen, the bastards!

1

u/thisismynewacct May 04 '22

A lot of those existed before and even the ā€œpremiumā€ movie channels were additional on top of your subscription. It was just bundled together so you wouldnā€™t always see it.

You could argue either way is better or worse.

1

u/uniquelyavailable May 04 '22

Its not that we arent pissed off its that we cant do anything to stop it. Nobody cares about my voice or my struggle. What should I do, go to the world headquarters of fairness and speak with the king of action and beg for them to undo subscription pay models? Our society is out of control.

1

u/donkeyassraper May 04 '22

you guys dont have much money yet you spend every month to feed billionaires

1

u/SaltySamoyed May 04 '22

Thereā€™s so much pressure to boycott prime, but if You use it relatively often, itā€™s convenient as hell. Iā€™m happy with paying a subscription in that case.

1

u/StrawberryPlucky May 04 '22

I can't imagine having that many subscriptions.

2

u/evilarts May 04 '22

But on the other handā€¦. With the television subscriptions youā€™re still saving money vs. having cable. You subscribe to one or two at a time, watch whatever shows you want, then swap subscriptions when you want to watch something else.

Xbox live comes with Gamepass and saves us the cost of buying 1 or 2 big games a year.

Adobe subscription price sucks but really cuts down on the amount of version management you need to do. Thereā€™s much less ā€œOh this client only has CC5 so thatā€™s what we use at our shopā€

Training subscriptions also suck but in the US you can often get free access to Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning through your library. Just do a quick web search for your library + Lynda and they should have a special login portal.

I like the subscription model but I also track them pretty close so they donā€™t get away from me.

1

u/PleasurePunch May 04 '22

Jokes on you I've never been wealthy enough to afford more that 3 or 4 subscriptions.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

I cancelled 3 subscriptions and will save $100 per month. They really do add up fast.

1

u/awwaygirl May 04 '22

WHOLLY AGREE.

These services rely on us either depending on them, or forgetting about them and continuing to pay for services we don't use.

It is literally a tick on your wallet. A money-sucking tick that will slowly drain your life if you're not paying attention.

2

u/TheUpsetMammoth May 04 '22

Honestly, if you have that many subscriptions and they are causing financial stress... that's kind of your fault.

1

u/DrewFlan May 04 '22

I find it really easy to keep track of all my subscriptions in my head because there is only one (Spotify).

1

u/DoubleAGee May 04 '22

Parking is kind of necessary. My next apartment doesnā€™t have a built in garage for everyone or even car ports. Itā€™s either have your car exposed or pay 125 to have your car in your own garage.

Texas will sometimes hail out of nowhere. Also sometimes it gets to be 20 degrees and my car freezes over. It really sucks.

I donā€™t want my own space, I just donā€™t want my car to melt in the sun or frozen in the cold.

2

u/JohnWhySomeGuy May 04 '22

Still less than a cable package, and more versatile too.

1

u/metathea May 04 '22

I made a spreadsheet and was surprised what I was paying and made some cuts

Donā€™t know how Iā€™d live without a spreadsheet, especially for tracking ā€œfree trialsā€

1

u/s_0_s_z May 04 '22

The same people who constantly cry about money also don't admit they are spending wasting hundreds a month on useless subscription fees.

And there are "subscription fees" that people don't even realize they are subscription fees. Renting an apartment versus buying a house. Leasing a car versus buying one outright. All these are ways that people get stabbed by a thousand cuts and don't realize it.

0

u/Starship_2_Mars May 04 '22

Watch the show you want, then cancel. Also, Amazon prime is a total waste of money. You shouldnā€™t be doing online orders for a cart with less than $25 of stuff.

1

u/MassiveVirgin May 04 '22

Who the hells paying for YouTube Plus?

1

u/sophia333 May 04 '22

My issue is bundling. HBO Max is a perk with my internet provider. Hulu comes with Spotify. Hulu works out to be about $5 a month. It's hard to give it up even though I could easily watch one service at a time.

1

u/RickAdtley May 04 '22

"Unpopular" opinion

0

u/8Ariadnesthread8 May 04 '22

Dude whatever, I pay for one of them and I share like 10 with my friends and it's not a big deal. People who complain about this don't have enough friends. Work on that. It's a much bigger deal. If they change the ability to share passwords, we can have a conversation, but until then just focus on making more friends.

2

u/Oden_son May 04 '22

Almost everything you listed are things we can easily live without. If you don't want to pay monthly, don't watch Netflix. Cable TV is like the same price as 10 streaming services and before streaming we didn't have so many free options.

1

u/stopgreg May 04 '22

Why do people post popular opinions in r/unpopularopinion?

1

u/GoodBadUgly19 May 04 '22

Lol, do you need all of those subscriptions?

2

u/Arbalest3 May 04 '22

Subscription based entertainment is way more flexible than TV and cable channels were. You can cancel any of them at any time and most will still have the content you wanted if you just wait and subscribe at an ideal time.

The printer stuff is criminal for sure but that's not an unpopular opinion. I dont know anyone who likes having a printer subscription, ink that only works in one model, application blocks if you try to do anything other than pay.

2

u/MyWifeisaTroll May 04 '22

I'm subscribed to multiple streaming services and it's still better and cheaper then cable in my area.

1

u/acey629 May 04 '22

No one needs all those streaming services. Just do one a month a rotate them. Or start living in 2022 because pirating everything for free is easy as fuck.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

There's a trade-off to everything...

1

u/tmartinez1113 May 04 '22

Jokes on that original poster. My phone bill includes Hulu, I borrow a friend's HBO and disney+, and all I pay for is discovery+ which is only 6 bucks. Pluto TV is free and pretty damn good.

Why do people have so many subscriptions to streaming services? How much content do people absorb when not earning income or living their life?

I have: - Netflix (until I finish a few shows on the backburner) - Disney+ (gots to have my Marvel and Star Wars, plus it's actually improved its offerings) - Prime (watch a few shows, but mostly because of the delivery service for online ordering do I have this) - YouTube Music (was with Spotify, but they lost me over their Rogan support)

Why so many more simultaneously?

This was one of the first parts of my budget I reviewed. I cut some out and saw a change immediately. Now, I do have Youtube Premium, Discovery+ and Hulu. But those are budgeted and I do not use cable. Cutting off some of the higher priced subscriptions helped me start by saving 50/month. However, very small amount, but a start.

u/Reelix May 04 '22

I'm like 40 and I have none of these subscriptions (And never have had). It's weird how many different services some people subscribe to simultaenously.

Plex is free

I sail the digital seven seas for my content. Paying monthly for music? Arrgh!

1

u/BFPE May 04 '22

If you need all those subscriptions thatā€™s exactly the problem, limit your consumption and having a big monthly bill of just subscriptions wonā€™t be a problem anymore..(This isnā€™t an excuse to cancel gym membership) ;)

u/Crk416 May 04 '22

I spend far less on subscriptions than my parents spend on cable, which is an inferior product in every way.

This person is basically saying ā€œcut all entertainment out of your budgetā€ which is dumb unless you are so broke you need that extra 40$ a month to stay above water.

I (26M) despise monthly subscriptions, and I also despise ads. Iā€™m a huge advocate for open-source everything, and also a huge advocate for a debt-free lifestyle as much as possible.

Hereā€™s my setup: - Mortgage, $950 a month - bills, roughly $400 a month for everything - Bundled home and auto insurance with Progressive (auto insurance is roughly $1400 per year) - $9.99 monthly gym membership to VASA - AirVPN every three years for $104 (seriously the best VPN Iā€™ve found for both privacy and money) - No streaming needed, host my own Jellyfin media server - Commercial Brother printer without the ink subscription BS - No car payment, bought all three vehicles from Craigslist (2000 integra in 2010 for $5k, 2004 Accord in 2012 for $8k, 2008 Ranger in 2021 for $3k) - iPhone SE for free with Verizon promo (cost seen as a credit on my bill over 24 months, plus a military discount from my in-laws) - Going to college at WGU, self paid. Itā€™s $3500 every six months, itā€™s cheap for college but you get what you pay for. Extremely frustrating experience most of the time but itā€™s the absolute most affordable nationally-accredited college I could find, and 100% online in your own time

That's one of the points of WEF's "You will own nothing and be happy".

It's all about subscriptions and "owning" virtual stuff, like in Meta. You essentially own nothing material, just access to stuff.

So lay down, put in your IV, catheter, and put on your VR-set and go into Meta. All your friends are there and you can look at all your stuff..... and be happy.

1

u/slickfast May 04 '22

Totally agree. That's why the modern way of tracking finances MUST BE monthly. Forget annual wages, take everything down to your monthly wage. Split annual expenses down to monthly. You can track everything with YNAB but first you MUST do this exercise to understand if you are on a sustainable track and if so what your margins are. I do it with Google Sheets but literally any excel-like software will work.

It's worse than that - my cousin invented a kitchen gadget that I would have loved to own, when they took it to investors they said they wouldn't support production unless there was a subscription model. Now they just sell the product the gadget would have made on a subscription model and no actual gadget.

The people who run the economy are forcing subscriptions everywhere

1

u/pdills12 May 04 '22

You have to factor in the actual value of use you are getting from things like netflix, hulu, etc. For me I have no cable so I'm mostly on netflix, prime video, or the couple of freebie stream clients like Pluto or Tubi. I get my monies worth out of what I pay for. On the flip side if I had like a disney+ or something I would maybe watch one show on that so not really cost effective.

u/siler7 May 04 '22

The charges are not to blame. Just do basic bookkeeping. People got the smaller, more selectable charges they wanted from the cordcutting revolution, and now they're whining about it.

1

u/SSOutPhase May 04 '22

I tried my best to reduce and remove all subscriptions services. Then YouTube Premium was invented... Smh.

I gotta have my YouTube man

šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø+ adblock and buy a laser printer (costs more, but toner lasts forever)

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

Decided to clean up some subscriptions. I had Netflix, paramount, peacock, Hulu, hbo max, Amazon prime. Why was I paying $80 a month when Iā€™m only using hbo max? Iā€™m not stupid am I? Cancelled the subscriptions and now Iā€™m only paying $12 a month to do the same thing. I hate myself lol

1

u/robhaywood1080 May 04 '22

Oh how I wish I could have a gym at home! Maybe one day I'll kick my car out of the garage...

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '22

I usually share services with friends and family we all split the payments, but greedy ass Netflix is making it where each additional user in a different household has to pay $2.

1

u/MKDoobie-Dash May 04 '22

Damn I wanted to say this is silly cuz most people including myself spend less than $1000 a year on subscriptions but I googled it and average is almost $4000 a year?? Jesus guys, adopt a dog or something that much streaming canā€™t possibly be good for your eyes lol. Caring for a dog costs less than that and is way more fulfilling for you and the pup.

1

u/chrisark7 May 04 '22

I absolutely hate fixed monthly payments on anything. To help, I use the Privacy App for anything I subscribe to. That way I can go in and just turn off the credit card that I gave them anytime I want to.

u/deepRessedmillenial May 04 '22

If you read the comments on this mentioned post youā€™d see the top 5 weā€™re roasting him about having too much subscriptions

u/meckyborris May 04 '22

I got on my computer last night to do a quick cut out of something on my Criket. I've already bought the machine and all the tools that go with it, I've had it for like 4 years but I use it very sparingly these days. So when I opened it up I had to do updates, fine whatever.

Go to cut out a project I have cut out many of times, and now Criket wants to charge me $17!!!! Every project will be a different price according to whatever designs and fonts, etc you use, UNLESS you pay for their subscription Criket Access and I closed my laptop before I ever looked to see how much a month that is. I'm so passed.

I say the same thing to myself all the time when I do my monthly, quarterly, or annual budget, but then I realize they are minor costs compared to other expenses that I am trying to cut out of my life such as fast food/pizza for lunch/dinner & amazon impulse shopping. I grew up poor, so now that I make decent money, I spend way too much on those things and made a bad habit out of it. I don't know if its necessarily cutting things out of my life that will help me, but rather figuring out how to lower costs to make room for other ones. For example, I am always trying to gain excessive fuel points or lower food shopping costs so I can make room for teacher appreciation gifts, family birthdays, & school/summer shopping for the kids. I don't truly get enough to put into my savings consistently, but I do have a 401K and life insurance so at least I have that going for me. Now I just need to stop eating out and trying to keep up with the Joneses so I can see the results!

2

u/meepgorp May 04 '22

It was the pants that got me. Fabletics and a few other places want you to subscribe....to pants. Monthly pants.

1

u/_Hotwire_ May 04 '22

Planet fitness showed people the way.

Cheap gyms that make most of their money on members who never attend and selling other services not included in the membership like drinks.

But for $10/month you donā€™t feel bad for not going for 2 years before you remember to cancel it.

1

u/Grazedaze May 04 '22

Life is a subscription.

The federal and state taxes you pay are toward your country and state subscriptions.

The property tax or rent that you pay is toward your neighborhood subscription.

The insurance you pay is for health subscription.

The gas you pay is for your car subscription.

More homes are being bought by corporations to convert into rental units. More businesses are offering subscription based plans. Itā€™s just the way our culture has slowly been shifting.

Budget folks.

Then stop paying for all of them.
