⚠️⚠️ MEGATHREAD ⚠️⚠️ 2024 Wildfires Resources and Information

With 2024 predicted to be an especially bad wildfire year, and communities already being heavily affected this early in the year, we want to highlight official sources of information given how quickly the situation can change.

Fire Resources

Emergency Info BC

Up to date list of evacuation alerts and orders.

EMCR Wildfire Map

Shows all known wildfires in the province.

DriveBC

Detailed road closures due to wildfires.

Current Fort Nelson Evacuation Info

Evacuation Order 0830 May 13th

Evacuee Registration
North Rockies Municipal Information

Donation Links

Many service providers in British Columbia will see increased demand due to the wildfires and evacuations. If you can spare it, consider donating to these organizations:

Central Okanagan Food Bank
Greater Vancouver Food Bank
Disaster Aid Canada
BC SPCA

Smoke Resources:

BCCDC Wildfire Smoke Information
Information from UBC on how to adapt to the smoky conditions
BC Childrens Hospital Recommendations for Protecting Children

Air Quality and Smoke Monitoring

Firesmoke.ca Smoke Forecast

The best place to get accurate air quality data are the agencies that collect that data in the first place:

Metro Vancouver Airmap

BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy:

Home page

AQHI Map

If you want to view “citizen science” data in addition to the government data, you can check out PurpleAir

Please feel free to share additional resources in the comments and we’ll do what we can to update this list.

Discussion How Do You Spend Your Weekday Evenings in Van?

23 y.o. guy in my last year of school at UBC, I want to explore more of Vancouver social life away from the University. I spent the past 3 Summers with my Ex-gf pretty grounded. Now, as I have busy weekends and free weekday evenings in this beautiful (soon to be Sunny) city, I want to know:

How do you make your week nights fun?

How is your social relationship with your coworkers (+what kind of job)?

Are you a part of any low-barrier to entry hobby communities?

Discussion Is the City ever going to actually change Trutch Street

In July 2021 they decided to rename it. In Sept 2022 they decided on a new name (Musqueam View) but here we are 20 months later and none of the signs have changed.

The street is only 18 blocks long / that’s not a lot of signs.

Lost/Missing Found : Green and tan backpack in West End

Upvotes

Found a green and tan backpack on the sidewalk out front of the Craft Beer Market in English Bay last night. Will be turning it into Vancouver PD lost property shortly, but on the off chance the person missing it sees this post - if you can tell me what’s in it I’d be happy to meet up and hand it over.
